Newcomer Jane Parish named People’s Choice winner in annual Art is Ageless® competition Congratulations to Jane Parish! She is the People’s Choice winner for her pencil drawing titled “Love Waits” in the annual Art is Ageless® competition at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. Jane, a first-time competitor, also won first place in the watercolor and drawing divisions and third place in the Christmas-inspired art division. The 65-year-old is a relative newcomer to the local art scene, taking her first acrylic painting class two years ago. She quickly became obsessed with reproducing Christmas scenes found on Pinterest, an online inspirational pin board. Eventually Jane moved on to colored pencils and then took a watercolor class offered through the college.
“Love Waits” is Peoples Choice.
“It’s good therapy,” she said. For her drawing named People’s Choice winner, Jane was inspired by an advertisement for a dress. The 50’s-inspired ad featured a woman wearing a vintage dress sitting in a retro diner. “I love anything from that era,” she said. “It just kind of appeals to me. I think the dress was $140. I thought, ‘I don’t want that dress, but I do want to draw that picture.’” When Jane heard she had won People’s Choice, she said it was a “total shock. It’s the first contest I’ve ever entered,” she said. “Naturally, you don’t think you’re going to win anything.” “Louie” - first place amateur painting.
Jane grew up watching her mother create “gorgeous” oil paintings that she gifted to family members. “Maybe it’s in the genes,” Jane said. u
Each year the Art is Ageless event is held for those 65 years and older at Presbyterian Manor. Not only is it an awesome opportunity for our seniors, but it is also a great opportunity for our community and the surrounding area. Yearly, a vast amount of people stop in to view the exhibit throughout the week. Many community and family members marvel on and on about the work that our locals have created. I am so glad the event turned out to be such a success. It made all the hard work worth it for many reasons. Mostly, I loved seeing the artists’ faces and hearing their voices when they realized they had placed competitively. In addition, our artists, family members and community members were beyond thankful to Presbyterian Manor for holding this event for our community ... another reason to make next year’s Art Is Ageless event that much better. We can’t have this wonderful event without all of our talented, amazing artists. I want to thank everyone for entering the competition, as well as everyone who attended the reception. It was a beautiful, rewarding evening for all involved. I am so happy to have built some solid relationships with the artists and community members and can’t wait to see them grow. I am ready for next year and all the magnificent art pieces that will be entered. u

Parsons Presbyterian Manor announces Art is Ageless® winners Parsons Presbyterian Manor recently hosted a reception for the winning artists in the annual Art is Ageless® juried competition. “We are so fortunate to have so many talented artists in our Parsons Community,” said Sloan Dwyer, marketing director. “Art is Ageless features artwork form artists age 65 and older. I remember where I was when . . . When major events take place, especially those that are tragic or dangerous, we often recall exactly where we were when it happened. Nearly 20 years ago, on April 19, 2000, a tornado struck Parsons, Kan. Residents and staff share their memories of this day. Betty Heady, resident – “I’m not 100% sure, but I think I was at home then. I’m pretty sure I thought the year 2000 was the year the world was going to end anyway.” Shannon Brown, medical records director – “I was at my mom’s temporarily, and we then went to the old karate building because it had a basement. However, my mom refused to leave her house, so she got under her house! The truck the rest of the family drove to the place got demolished, so after it was over, we did have to walk back to mom’s, hoping she was ok. She was!”

Also, moving all kids to safety in the cottages was a big task at hand but it was necessary moving them all to the basement prior.” Jasmine Edie, activities director“I was at my grandma’s house and we all went two houses down to my uncle’s basement. On the way down, my sister kept saying ‘a tomato is coming a tomato is coming!’ We still give her a hard time to this day about it.” u
Honor your father
Nicohle Bushnell, administrative assistant- “I was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church doing my confirmation practice with my mom, so I felt pretty safe. Once we heard the sirens, we all went to the basement.”
Father’s Day is a time to recognize and honor all those dads in our lives who work hard to instill important values in their children for the betterment of families and society. We would like to show appreciation for one of our staff members who remains a dedicated role model to his four grown children.
Ralph Heady, resident - “I was at the house with Betty. It went right over us and missed my workshop, thankfully.”
Kevin Cruse and his wife, Ann, have four children: Brandon, 42, Tarasa, 36, Alyssa, 30, and Jarod, 28.
Pat Wilkerson, resident - “I was at my brother’s, and we went across the street to the neighbor’s basement. It was a crumbly basement, too. We ended up being safe though.” Neal Wilkerson, resident – “I was working at the Parsons State Hospital training clinic, and another fella and I were on watch duty from
Kevin, director of environmental services at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, says that he views his role as a father to show his children the importance of being considerate and kind to all people. “I want to teach my children the love and respect of family and all those you come in contact with,” he says. The payoff of being a good dad is then being able to experience the joys of grandchildren. What’s the best thing about being a father? Kevin says: “Watching your children grow … then spoiling your grandchildren and sending them home.” u

Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health. Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s Art is Ageless program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year. u
