Area stylists team up to keep residents looking, feeling good

Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor: A great place for pets Moving into a new community can be hard but having to do it without a beloved pet can make it even harder. Luckily, at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor, small dogs, cats and birds are welcome with just a few restrictions.

Sally Goosey and Wanda Musson have been cutting and styling the hair of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor residents for almost two years. In addition to serving the community’s residents, the pair also work together at Sally’s Beauty shop—well, sort of.

“When I’m at the Manor, Wanda’s at the Sally Goosey, hair stylist, beauty shop, and when I’m at the beauty shop, with resident Colleen Taylor Wanda is at the Manor,” said Sally. “We work together, but never see each other because of [COVID-19].”

For Wanda, becoming a stylist was the result of a lifelong passion.

“From the time I was a little kid, I just loved messing with hair. My grandma taught me to braid, and I just loved it. As soon as I got out of high school, I went right to beauty school,” said Wanda.

But it was a different story for Sally. She had to be talked into going to beauty school by her sister-inlaw, who didn’t want to go alone.

“I wasn’t doing anything else. I had graduated from Cowley with an associate degree, and, at that time, I couldn’t find a job, so I went to beauty school,” said Sally.

Both women indicated that one of the best things about working at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor is seeing the positive effects their work has on its residents.

Annual Art is Ageless® call for entries underway at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor is now accepting entries for the annual Art is Ageless® juried exhibit and competition March 26 – April 3, 2022.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2023 Art is Ageless calendar.

judged at the systemwide level.

Due to the uncertainty created by COVID-19, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor plans to hold its event virtually for friends of the program on the community’s Facebook page, and announce winners on Facebook following the event. Works will be on exhibit at the community for residents only.

Artists may choose to enter works for exhibit only. For the competition, works must be completed after the artists is age 65 and must be no more than 5 years old, completed since January 2017. There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. The entry deadline is March 22. Hairstylists – continued from page 1 “I had this one little lady tell me that she only wants to look in the mirror after I’ve done her hair,” said Wanda, “They’re just so sweet.”

And their work has physical effects as well.

“I’m either very boring or very relaxing because usually they fall asleep,” said Sally. “I think that getting your hair done, getting your head massaged … the warm water, it’s relaxing. I can see that some residents come in anxious, or they may not be having a good day, but by the time they’re done they’re much more relaxed.”

Dogs – continued from page 1 In fact, it was the community’s pet policy that initially sold Betty Johnson and her late husband on the move to Presbyterian Manor back in 2019. Today, Betty and her 10-year-old papillon-toy-terrier mix, Digger (AKA Diggy) enjoy taking walks around the community and Betty says that having Diggy by her side keeps her busy and entertained.

Betty Tanner is another Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor resident who enjoys the community’s pet policy. Betty and her 13year-old shih tzu, Baxter, originally lived in the community’s apartments before moving together to a duplex.

“Living at the Manor duplex, I was able to get a fenced in area for Baxter to play outside,” said Betty.

For Betty, moving into a community that wouldn’t take Baxter was simply not an option.

“I have had dogs all my life—I can’t live without one,” said Betty.
