Aberdeen Village health care center among top in nation The health care center at Aberdeen Village, a PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®) senior living community, is among the top senior living health care centers in the country, according to Pinnacle Quality Insight, a customer satisfaction measurement firm.

With more than 25 years of experience in post-acute healthcare, Pinnacle conducts more than 150,000 phone surveys each year and works with more than 2,500 care providers in all 50 U.S. states, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Aberdeen Village’s health center is a recipient of Pinnacle Quality Insight’s 2022 Customer Experience Award™. Qualifying for the award displays a continued dedication to providing Best in Class senior health care services.

Aberdeen Village received this recognition from residents in the health care center and their families for cleanliness and the quality of nursing care the team provides.

“What makes the Pinnacle Customer Excellence Award unique is that it really comes from our residents and their families, who rate us highly for the quality of care and services they receive,” said Tim Allin, executive director.

“The award is evidence of the faith our residents and their families place in the way we carry out our mission to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.”

Area artists invited to submit work for Art is Ageless competition Senior artists in the Olathe area are invited to participate in Aberdeen Village’s annual Art is Ageless® exhibit and juried art competition March 25– April 29.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the Art is Ageless calendar in 2023.

Due to the uncertainty created by COVID-19, Aberdeen Village plans to hold its event virtually for friends of the program on the community’s Facebook page. Winners will be announced on Facebook following the event. Works will be on exhibit at the community for residents only.

Artists compete in nine categories, including painting, drawing, photography, quilting and sculpture and may be designated as amateur or professional. The complete rules and category listing are online at www.ArtIsAgeless.org. Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other PMMA® communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Give a warm welcome to resident Shari Rolph Since making the move to Aberdeen Village in July, independent living resident Shari Rolph has found an environment filled with warm, friendly, helpful people.

“It’s great,” Shari said. “Everyone is so friendly. Everyone is so nice, and the staff is terrific. They’ve been so helpful.”

Before joining our family at Aberdeen Village, Shari lived in another senior community in St. Charles, Mo. Originally, she planned to make the move in September, but as COVID-19 temporarily retreated during the summer, she decided it would be a good idea to move up the date.

“It has seasons similar to South Carolina, so you don’t want to go there in the winter time,” Shari said. “But it’s a beautiful island and so clean. It was really something. I wouldn’t want to live there, but it’s a great place to visit.”

Ed developed Alzheimer’s disease and moved to a memory care unit before passing on in 2015. That’s when Shari made the move to a retirement community in St. Charles. Now, at the age of “85 going on 110,” Shari is glad to be closer to her children. She’s also looking

“I’ll sure be glad when COVID is over,” she said. “But it’s something we all have to live with.”

Her family, including husband Ed and their four children, moved to St. Louis in 1972. Their children all went to the University of Missouri.

“Ed and I were from Ohio, so we were Buckeyes,” Shari said. “It was hard for us to not send the kids there.”

With two children living in Kansas, Shari said it made sense to make the move to Aberdeen Village. Her 15 grandchildren — ranging in age from 25 to 37 — are scattered throughout seven different states.

Her husband built a career as a systems engineer for IBM, which provided the opportunity to travel. It’s something they continued well into retirement.

“We took 10 trips to Europe and went to Florida for 19 winters so we didn’t have snow,” Shari said. “I said years ago that I didn’t care if the last snow I ever saw was on a Christmas card, but we’ve had several since then.”

Restorative therapy helps with daily life For Trisha Bahr, director of rehabilitation with Aegis Therapies®, the role of physical therapy in overall health can’t be stressed enough.

“Performing daily activities and participating in continued exercise is so important to overall health,” Trisha said. “If we stop using a skill or activity, we’re at a higher risk of losing that ability. The more we can do for ourselves now will allow us to maintain our current environment or living situation without needing help later in life.”

Restorative therapy is any sort of continued exercise or program designed to keep someone active —

be that physically or mentally.

Through the use of restorative therapy, a resident can experience physical and mental improvements that can help extend an individual’s ability to keep performing basic daily tasks.

Because the therapy needs to focus on the individual, Trisha said each plan is tailored to the person.

“Every person’s treatment plan is individualized,” she said. “Every program looks different, whether it’s in assisted living or independent living. Restorative therapy is really seen mostly in the health care setting, in group exercise classes,

walking with staff to and from the dining room, and doing as much for yourself as possible.”

In addition to restorative therapy, Aegis offers a wide spectrum of services that can help residents maintain independence and enjoy a high quality of life.

“We provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy as outpatient services,” Trisha said. “We can help people regain function after an illness, improve comprehension, problem solving, balance issues, pain management, urinary incontinence, low vision adaptation, and much more.” u
