Get outside! Take a friend with you and go on a walk JUNE 2022
Being helpful is a state of mind After serving on the Aberdeen Village Resident Council for three years, outgoing president Sam Malsbary has no intention of ending his efforts to help his community. “Sometimes, I’ll learn about a problem, and I’ll just go fix it,” Sam said. “I hope I will continue to learn about problems and be able to help. I’ve always enjoyed being a fix-it person. That usually works out quick and easy if I can put Martha and Sam Malsbary something on a shelf for somebody or help them figure out how the heating system is supposed to work. As long as they know I’m willing to do those things, they won’t have to go the president, and I can make his or her life easier.” In his role on the Resident Council, Sam worked to both advocate for residents and to help them understand the community guidelines and the reasons for them. With the presence of COVID-19 the role of educator has become more important than ever before. “There’s been a lot of that in the past three years,” Sam said. “COVID, combined with HIPPA sometimes leaves you in the dark about where we’re going and what we’re doing. Very much changed with COVID, so we try to understand the policies and help other people understand it, and work it out so it was the best of all possible situations. We do some teaching and training with residents to make sure they don’t all want lollipops - especially not those strawberry flavored ones.” The Resident Council also tries to identify concerns raised by residents, and get them addressed in a timely manner by working closely with administration.
The weather is getting nicer, so it’s time to get outside and enjoy the clean air. You can grab a friend and go to a park or even just take a walk around Aberdeen Village. Here is an idea for a fun little picnic in a jar to bring with you. It’s always fun to have a change of scenery. Walk for a while, enjoy your picnic, then walk back! Picnic in a Jar To make a picnic in a jar, cut the rim off of a small plastic container. You can use a Glad Mini Round container that holds 1/2 cup (4 oz) or any small plastic container that will fit inside your mason jar. Put a cookie or two in the bottom of the jar and cover them with a circle of parchment paper. Add chips to the top of the parchment paper. Assemble a sandwich making sure that it will fit into the mouth of the jar. You can use French bread or just regular bread cut to fit your jar, turkey, cheese, lettuce and tomato slices to make a sandwich or anything you like. Cover the sandwich with plastic wrap and set it on top of the chips. Fill the small plastic container with salad or fruit. Set the container of salad on top of the sandwich and put the lid on the jar. Bring along a small plastic fork and you are all set! u
