Music on my mind

Lovely piano tunes and beautiful voices are known to fill the air at Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, and to our delight, it’s often one of our very own staff members performing.

I have been playing piano since I was about 5. I took piano, organ and vocal lessons from a wonderful music teacher, Jane Miller, in Greenleaf, Kan., till I was about 14. She had me playing in churches, Julie Cole and Kathy Palmer, staff members at competitions and for county Clay Center Presbyterian Manor enjoy sharing 4-H days on a regular basis. I their musical gifts with the resident at PMMA. taught myself how to play guitar, but really only play that for my own enjoyment.

I have had a love of music as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite memories are of my mom and I playing name that tune. I would play the song on the piano, and she would tell me the song title as she cooked or worked around the house. I still have all of my mom’s sheet music and books that she acquired during her life. I like, listen to, and play a wide variety of music.

I am currently in charge of, and play for, my church’s praise team, 24 Feet. We lead praise songs for worship services. I also sing in the church choir. However, I don’t feel that I have much of a voice. My daughter got the vocal chords in the family.

I have played piano at the Presbyterian Manor several times during my 11 years here. 24 Feet has performed for the Presbyterian Manor banquet. I also play for chapel services when asked. My daughter and I have entertained residents in the past.

Say hello to new Health Service Director

Jessica Lippe has a new title, but she’s certainly not a new face here at the Manor.

“I’ve been here four years, and was the Material Data Set Coordinator (MDS Coordinator), before starting my new position as Health Services Director in August. My job is to know residents inside and out, from their past history to their families. I love getting to know them and the stories of their lives,” said Jessica.

Jessica got her LPN at SE Community College in Nebraska in 2004, then her associate’s degree

from the same school in 2007.

Jessica has been in the long term care field since 2000, having started her career as a CNA.

While she’s not busy at work, Jessica has a 2.5 year old son to keep her busy, is expecting her second child, and helps her husband around their family farm.

Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America announces Art is Ageless ® winners Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has announced the winners of its annual, system-wide Art is Ageless® competition, which features entries by artists age 65 and older throughout Kansas and Missouri.

Two winning artists in Clay Center’s annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will join nearly 50 senior artists from Kansas and Missouri whose work will be featured in the 2016 Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.

Local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winners from 17 other PMMA campuses. The winners of the masterpiece level competition are featured in the annual Art is Ageless Calendar and notecards.

“I’ve always loved embroidering. It’s so relaxing. It was my first year to enter Art is Ageless, and I was very honored and very surprised to have won anything. I couldn’t believe it at first. I had to pinch myself. It’s just wonderful.

My kids are real happy too,” said Dorothy.

Art is Ageless®, open exclusively to people age 65 and older, is a copyrighted program of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. Artists not interested in competition were invited to enter the Art is Ageless exhibit only.

“We are so pleased that two of our local artists here in Clay Center will be featured in the 2016 calendar. The

quality of art that is entered not only at the local competitions but at the masterpiece level within our system is amazing each and every year. The seniors in Kansas and Missouri producing this art are proof that you never stop being creative no matter your age,” said Heather Germann, Marketing Director.

To be eligible for PMMA’s masterpiece level competition, artists entered a juried competition at one of 18 Presbyterian Manor communities in Kansas and Missouri.

The 2016 Art is Ageless calendar and notecard artwork will include amateur and professional entries selected from winning entries in nine categories.

My favorite thing about music is its ability to remind us of our past and perhaps some favorite memories. Â Songs are memories, both good and bad. Â When we listen to songs that are special to us they can invoke the same thoughts and feelings as they did when we were experiencing that time in life.

I play the piano and accordion and can play the organ. I enjoy playing the piano occasionally for programs and birthdays when I have free time here at Presbyterian Manor, especially when residents ask. I play at my church, and have played at the Chapel quite a bit. Music is so soothing and

calming. I like to take care of people, and it’s just one way I can do that. Â

I started taking lessons when I was 9 and started playing at church around that time. I took lessons until I was 20 years old, and somewhere along the way, I bought an accordion. I paid for it with my babysitting money, and it was relatively easy to learn, since my right hand played just like a piano.

I always wanted to play music, be a stay-at-home mom, and then be a nurse. I started nursing school two years before my daughter graduated high school, so I got to do all of those things! I’ve worked here for 12 years, and I enjoy it very much.
