On a new PATH® Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica (PMMA) as a system has been providing senior care and services for more than 70 years across Kansas and Missouri (and coming soon to Colorado).

Aberdeen Village receives 2019 Customer Experience Award from Pinnacle Quality Insight

Aberdeen Village is proud to announce that they are the recipient of Pinnacle Quality Insight’s 2019 Customer Experience Award™.

The Customer Experience Award is given to senior living communities that score in the top 15-percent of the nation in resident satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight for 12 consecutive months. Aberdeen Village received the award for independent living and skilled nursing.

Over the course of 2018, a sampling of Aberdeen Village residents and family members participated in monthly telephone interviews with open-ended questions, and the opportunity to rate Aberdeen Village in specific categories.

As a part of the service to seniors, PMMA has always offered care after hospitalizations through skilled nursing and physical, occupational and speech therapies with the objective of supporting a return to prior levels of independence and overall health.

In 2012, PMMA launched a program called PATH® or “PostAcute-to-Home” to strengthen service to older adults. This program serves patients who have been discharged from a hospital, but still require therapy and special skilled care in order to make the transition from hospital to home.

Resident’s drawing wins top AiA prize, will be featured in calendar An experienced oil painter, Sharon Nelson was turned on to pencil drawing as an Aberdeen Village resident and now two of her drawings are receiving accolades through the annual system-wide Art is Ageless® juried competition.

Sharon’s colored pencil drawing on mixed media board titled “Golden Years, Golden Gears” was named Best of Show-Amateur at the masterpiece level in the annual competition and will be featured in the Art is Ageless 2020 calendar.

Another of her drawings, “Eagle Eye,” named People’s Choice in the local Aberdeen Village competition, also will be featured in the calendar.

Sharon, a first-time participant, was shocked when she learned she had won Best of Show for “Golden Years, Golden Gears.”

“I thought, ‘You have got to have the wrong person,’” she said.

The 76-year-old had dabbled in oil painting in her early years, so she was a somewhat experienced artist when she came to Aberdeen Village in 2016. Seeing that Aberdeen Village offered classes in pencil drawing sparked her curiosity.

“I fell into still life,” she said, “and I just enjoy doing it.”

“Golden Years, Golden Gears” is a drawing of farming machinery lined up against a wooden barn wall. Sharon was inspired by a photo her instructor at Aberdeen Village brought into class. It reminded her of growing up in a rural, agricultural area near Dodge City.

“Most of my life was spent in a small farming community in western Kansas,” Sharon said. “The local farmers spent the winter months cleaning and repairing their machines, so they were ready to start a new season. This drawing is a comfort to me as it feels like home.”

Sharon’s other piece, “Eagle Eye,” depicts the stateliness of a lone eagle with its head slightly turned to the left showing one of its eyes.

The depth and detail of the drawing conveys the level of skill Sharon has acquired in the medium. She said she still has her old oil paints, but now prefers pencil drawing. It’s the simplicity and stress-relief she enjoys.

It’s on the calendar in the unofficial holiday list. Why not take advantage of it and let your spiritual leader know that you value them? I’m guessing he/she would appreciate anything you might say or do to let them know you’ve noticed the good work.

PATH sets the standard with team members who are committed to making the admissions process more efficient. It features prompt admission decisions, extended admission hours, continual communication with physicians and families, proactive planning and post-discharge follow-up, and a comfortable home-like setting.

Recently, PMMA introduced an enhancement to the PATH program called “I Took the PATH to…” supporting our commitment to patient goals. Through a partnership with Aegis Therapies, patients set unique goals upon

There are many spiritual leaders who are making a difference at Aberdeen Village. Some are the church pastors/lay leaders who come in to make those important home visits. Others give up family time on Sunday evenings to serve as guest preacher at our Vespers services. Twenty-eight pastors have served in this capacity this year.

Sundays aren’t the only busy days at Aberdeen Village. Twice a week Eucharistic Ministers Joe Cinalli and Joanie Zemencik lead Catholic services. In addition, retired pastors Rev. Dr. Ralph Mitchell and Rev. Carl Erwin lead our monthly communion service.

Once a quarter, Rev. Michael Cork from College Church of the admission to PATH. These goals are discussed throughout the PATH stay as a way to motivate and honor progress.

Again this year, Aberdeen Village chaplain Diane Gunsolley is organizing a breakfast to celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month.

This year’s event will take place on October 16 in the Village Green Restaurant. Diane says, “It’s our small way of showing appreciation to the pastors who do so much for us.”

Residents have the opportunity to invite their own church pastors and all the pastors who serve Aberdeen Village in one capacity or another are invited. Last year, 26 pastors and 37 residents attended the breakfast. ◆ programming sets PMMA communities apart from other providers by demonstrating our commitment to whole-person wellness. The physical aspects of recovery from an illness or injury are typically the focus, but our talented teams focus on the emotional and spiritual aspects of recovery as well. Aberdeen Kitchen Pumpkin Cake/Muffin Ingredients: • 3 cups sugar • 1 cup oil • 4 lg eggs (beaten) • 3 1/3 cups flour • 1 tsp baking powder

• Add in pumpkin.

Directions:

• Add buttermilk.

1. Preheat oven to 400°. Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

Baking: • Bake at 350° for about 40-45 minutes • Makes 3 9-inch loaves about 55-60 mins

• Makes 4 8-inch loaves about 50-55 mins

• Makes 9 mini loaves / muffins

• 2 tsp baking soda • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp nutmeg • 1 tsp ground cloves • 1 can (15oz) canned pumpkin puree or 1 ¾ cups pumpkin puree

Sweet Corn Bread Ingredients: • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup cornmeal

• 1 cup buttermilk

• 1/4 cup white sugar

Directions:

• 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

• Combine dry ingredients and set aside.

• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

• In large bowl, cream together sugar, oil and eggs.

• 2 eggs, lightly beaten

• Add dry ingredients one cup at a time, folding in until all dry ingredients are moistened.

• 1-1/2 cups milk

• 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 cup sour cream • 1/4 cup butter, melted

2. Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Mix egg, sour cream, milk, and butter in a small bowl.

3. Fold egg mixture into flour mixture until just moistened; pour into prepared baking dish.

4. Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes.

Serve warm. ◆

‘Bringing Down the Mob’ with William Ouseley Retired FBI agent and author William Ouseley will present “Bringing Down the Mob,” the latest installment in Aberdeen Village’s Just Ask lifelong learning series on Thursday, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10.

William, an Aberdeen Village resident, spent more than 20 years working against the Civella crime family with the organized crime squad in the FBI’s Kansas City field office.

He would eventually serve as supervisor on the Operation Strawman case.

This case, popularized by the 1995 film, “Casino,” involved the mob infiltration of the Nevada gaming industry which resulted in the illegal “skimming” of millions of dollars from a number of Las Vegas casinos.

Participants will learn all about the Operation Strawman case and its Kansas City connection.

The event piqued the interest of numerous area seniors — leading to two completely full sessions that will bring more than 100 guests to Aberdeen Village.

Through Pinnacle Quality Insight’s monthly phone surveys Aberdeen Village has gathered real-time survey results to gain a better understanding of residents’ needs and when to make necessary improvements, continuing an 18-year emphasis on ensuring the individual needs of every resident are met. ◆
