Celebrating our nurses
I wanted to be a nurse since I was five years old. My mother and I would walk to the hospital to visit my grandfather. I would stand by the door and watch all the activities of the nurses and doctors. How long did you work as a nurse and where? I wanted to work only in hospitals Mary Greening and did so for 32 years. I worked in the surgery-recovery room and later part-time at night. The next 11 years was in the OB [obstetrics] department, then two years in the ICU. Then we moved for the last time and I worked 11 years on the cardiac floor and ICU. What was your favorite thing about being a nurse? I loved working in high activity areas and learning new procedures with all the latest equipment. But the patients were always the main attraction. I always enjoyed watching the patients’ improvement as days progressed.
Amy Hankins What inspired you to become a nurse? Becoming a nurse was a second career for me. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and made the decision to stay at home to raise my four kids. Going through childbirth and having more exposure to the

The World Health Organization designated 2020 as “the year of the nurse.” This observation coincides with the 200th birth anniversary of revolutionary nurse Florence Nightingale, whose leadership forever elevated the nursing profession. Throughout the year, PMMA communities will shine a spotlight on nurses as part of this global recognition. We continue our celebration with three nurses on our staff and retired nurses among our residents.
