Art is Ageless® local call for entries underway Aberdeen Village has issued a call for entries for the Art is Ageless® juried exhibit to be held April 29 – May 26, 2016. Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2017 Art is Ageless calendar.

The Art is Ageless® Program encourages Aberdeen Village residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Having a creative outlet benefits the mind, body and spirit.

“The exhibit and competition always draw a wide array of impressive artwork from talented seniors,” said Suzanne Willey, community relations director.

Sharing the journey

We are now in the season of Lent. Lent is that 40-day journey beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending at Easter, in which we remember our Lord’s journey through the wilderness. Lent offers us an opportunity to remember and reflect upon our own faith journey.

One of life’s realities is that from time to time we have to make a journey through a wilderness, which might be health issues, or grief following the death of a loved one.

Those can be very challenging times.

Of course many of life’s journeys are very pleasant ones. The enjoyable time spent with good friends or family, or a vacation.

Recently, I embarked upon a journey that I am enjoying very much. It is my journey with you in the role of Interim Chaplain here at Aberdeen Village. Like some of life’s other journeys, we don’t know the exact length of this journey. The term “interim” means temporary. What I do know is like any journey, it comes one day at a time, and each of those days is to be experienced on its own.

I look forward to these coming days, sharing this journey with you, as we share Christ’s love within the Aberdeen Village community. I am immensely grateful for the gracious welcome you’ve extended to me and the conversations with you.

A retired minister friend of mine has often said “all ministries are interim.” What she means is, of course, that no minister stays forever in any place. So as we move forward in our journey we’ll see one another in the hallways, in the vespers, and in the other settings trusting that God will bless this time of shared journey. Thank you for the opportunity.

Local competition winners will join winners 17 other Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Entry forms and information can be picked up at Aberdeen Village, 17500 West 119th Street, or by contacting Willey at 913-599-6100 or swilley@ pmma.org. Or go online to ArtIsAgeless.org to view rules, download an entry form or enter online.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2011). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Works entered for judging need to be at Aberdeen Village by April 20, 2016.

Savoring special memories from volunteerism So many times, we hear how rewarding it is to volunteer.

Aberdeen Village resident Ginny Graham shared a story about when she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, while living in St. Louis.

“I remember going to the home of this sweet lady with a fellow volunteer one day. As we approached the front door, we noticed this little dog frantically jumping in the window. We thought something might be wrong inside, so we entered the house right away to see if all was okay. The dog quickly ran down the hall and into a room. We followed the little pup,

As we continue to grow and strengthen our community partnerships, opportunities knock to host special events for area business and continuing education.

On March 3, leadership from both Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce and Johnson County Community College will be here leading a program on strengths development. In recent times, the entire PMMA organization has gone through this particular training. Understanding and further developing our strengths (vs. spending time addressing weaknesses), gives greater meaning to how we can be better as individuals and as a team, both personally and professionally. How exciting to be a part of a progressive initiative!

Oftentimes, volunteering does involve more than we initially agree to take on, but oh how rewarding it can end up being on days when we have opportunity to do even more.
