Celebrating fatherhood: Residents share special memories about fathers

This Father’s Day, we asked a few people to share special memories about their fathers as well as some of their favorite parts of parenthood. This year, take a few minutes to recognize and thank all the wonderful fathers in our community.

If you have met Seanna Butler, there’s a good chance you’ve seen her dancing or playing one of her signature jokes that keep everyone smiling.

“They know me for dancing, decorating, and I play a lot of jokes,” Seanna said. “I try to liven things up where I can.”

What do you remember most about your dad?

He was kind.

What’s one thing your dad always told you when you were growing up that turned out to be true?

Even if that means “throwing” a loss in a contest with Executive Director Tim Allen.

He told me to love others.

“We had a splits contest in one of the outdoor events,” Seanna said.

“They all got a kick out of it — and they couldn’t believe how far he got down. I won it, but you know I gave it to him.”

If you have children, how many do you have and what are their names?

I have a daughter, Jeanette, and a son, James.

What do you enjoy most about being a parent?

I wanted them to love God, themselves and others.

Summer Recipes

Let’s go on a picnic! Whether you choose to sit outside on your own balcony or patio or venture out to a park and spread out a blanket, it’s fun to make some fresh, easy-to-eat, summer-weather food and have a meal outside! Here are some ideas for quick and easy items to make for your picnic.

Garden Fresh Herbed Cucumber Flowers 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 2 tablespoons mint, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons chopped chives 4 ounces softened cream cheese 1/8 teaspoon salt Cheesecake in a Jar 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar zest of one lemon

1 seedless cucumber, medium sliced into 32 rounds 3-4 medium radishes, sliced thinly into 32 rounds kosher salt 1. Combine the first six ingredients together in a large bowl.

2. Use a decorative cookie cutter (e.g. a flower) to cut and mix until the sugar is moistened and fragrant.

4. Add in the cream cheese and cream together until smooth.

Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica communities to be judged at the masterpiece level. Winning entries at the masterpiece level are

selected for publication in PMMA’s annual Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.

Art is Ageless is a copyrighted program of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health.

Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s Art is Ageless program encourages Aberdeen Village residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

I have five: Don, David, Sharon, Tracey and Deborah.

Watching the grandkids grow up.

Always try hard. Give it your best the first time.

Honorable, trustworthy, dependable in raising his family in the Depression years and as a businessman.

Helping our children in every possible way and enjoying the love and respect they give in return.

His laugh—like a bowl full of Jell-O. He had a very sad upbringing but was always happy.

What’s one thing your dad always told you when you were growing up that turned out to be true?

His hobbies.

Be honest, be true, and all is for my benefit.

Just be yourself. He made me promise when I started college that I would finish because he never had a chance.

Honesty.

“What we are going through right now, they need it,” Seanna said.

“When COVID came, it was tough to see them go through all of that.

We had to come up with these ideas to make sure they could get through it.”

know I’m doing a good job,” she said. “It’s a joy for me. I like making people feel good and taking care of people. I don’t even say residents, because they’re more like family.

We think of them as family, and they feel the same way about us, too.”

The look on residents’ faces tell her she’s doing her job the right way.

In the past four years, Seanna has shared her gift of laughter in her work as a CNA for Aberdeen Village.

she said. “I get them down to their activities. If there’s not an activity they want to do, I’ll break out in a dance. If there’s a food they don’t like, I’ll go find something else for them.”

When she’s not at work, Seanna enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.

“We go out to eat, bowling, skating, anything that sounds fun,” she said.

“They say, ‘Grandma I want to do it,’ and I try to make it happen.” ◆
