Aberdeen Village artist shares decades of skill and experience
A recent display of artwork by resident Barbara Mueller exhibits all the knowledge she’s learned over her career as an artist, which spans many decades. “I’ve been painting for a long time,” said Barbara, who is 83. “I was into art in high school and was an art major in college. Then I went to graduate school.”
She worked as an art instructor for 33 years, first at Maryville College in Tennessee, then at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Throughout her career, Barbara has participated in a number of shows, including juried shows and solo exhibitions. Her work is included in the collections of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Manhattan, Kan.; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, Kan.; Oklahoma
Aberdeen Village is on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes 2019 longterm stay list. The senior living community received the highest score of High Performing to make the list, available at www.usnews. com/best-nursing-homes/search. Aberdeen Village has been serving Johnson County since 2001 with independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing/ long-term care. The campus can serve 30 long-term care residents and 15 short-term rehabilitation patients. Aberdeen Village is part of the PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America) network of senior living communities. U.S. News uses information from the Centers for Medicare and

Medicaid Services (CMS), the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes and skilled nursing centers. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care. Over the past two years, U.S. News changed its focus from the CMS star ratings to specific quality measures for short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. The 10 quality measures focus on staffing, outcomes, resident complaints and processes of care. Some of the measures used by U.S. News are not included in the CMS approach to determining 5-star ratings. U.S. News added the Short-Term Rehabilitation rating in 2018 to evaluate the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or similar condition. In 2019, U.S. News added a LongTerm Care rating, evaluating the care delivered to residents who are no longer able to live independently and need help with daily activities such as eating, getting in or out of bed or a wheelchair, using stairs, or getting dressed, as well as
administering needed medical care. In order to be included on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list, a skilled nursing center had to receive the High Performing designation in either the short-term rehabilitation or long-term care categories. In 2020, CMS awarded 5-stars to 3,689 skilled nursing centers. A total of 3,277 skilled nursing centers were recognized as Best Nursing Homes in 2020—2,362 in shortterm rehabilitation and 1,623 in long-term care. Just 708 skilled nursing communities received this designation in both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care.

All Medicare- and Medicaidcertified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received reimbursement from CMS in July 2020 and had sufficient data to evaluate quality in that rating. This is the third consecutive year and the seventh time Aberdeen Village has been on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list since 2011. In addition to Aberdeen Village, five PMMA locations are on the honoree list with high-performing designation for long-term care: Arkansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita in Kansas and

Though Barbara has worked in several media, she has a favorite. “Most the pieces are gouache wash,” Barbara said. “It’s an opaque watercolor. It’s a special kind of paint that’s different from other water-based paints.” Gouache can be applied in thick, solid layers or thinner “washes.” The exhibit also featured a wood sculpture and several lithographs. Lithography is a printmaking process in which the artist draws a design on a flat stone or metal plate. After a multi-step process to treat the stone or plate, the artist applies ink and uses a press to transfer the design onto paper.
Barbara’s favorite technique is gouache wash, an opaque water color that can be applied as thick, solid layers or in lighter “washes” on the canvas.

Barbara included a portrait of her brother and several landscapes. “The Vermont landscapes are some of my favorites,” Barbara said. “They are wash paintings of the mountains in Vermont, somewhat abstracted.” Barbara has been with the Aberdeen Village family for a little over a year. She said she’s been getting adjusted to her new home and has been involved in a number of events and activities to keep herself busy. “I do some painting here, but not as much as I thought I would,” Barbara said. “Art isn’t a hobby for me.
