Residents share holiday traditions

Aberdeen Village on U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home annual list Aberdeen Village is on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes 2018-2019 list. The senior living community received the highest score of High Performing to make the list, available at www. usnews.com/best-nursinghomes/search.

The U.S. News and Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care.

Everyone has their favorite memories of holiday traditions that span over generations.

That holds true for Rose Klusman and Iona Thrailkill, independent living residents at Aberdeen Village.

As we sat and visited about those traditions it was fun to see smiles light up their faces.

Both ladies enjoyed more of a traditional holiday get Rose Klusman together. There was gift giving and a big dinner.

Midnight mass services were attended and then they cooked and set up late into the night to insure they had everything ready for their holiday.

Iona remembers how her mother would make a poppyseed Kolache.

It was always a favorite at their holiday get togethers. A Kolache is a classic Czechoslovakian pastry. It can have fruit or cheese in it.

Today, she doesn’t make it anymore but she still enjoys that holiday tradition of having Povitica, she lets someone else do the hard work and has been picking up Povitica at Strawberry Hill, a Slavic bakeshop with an open kitchen.

More than 4,300 nursing homes received CMS’ top rating of five stars, while just 1,844 nursing homes earned the top Overall rating issued by U.S. News, according to the U.S. News website.

This is the fifth time the community has been on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list since 2011.

Community holiday traditions Our chaplain, Diane Gunsolley, works hard to carry out holiday traditions at Aberdeen Village.

Beginning December 2 at our first Vespers service of the Christmas season, we will begin the lighting of the advent wreath.

On December 12, we will start a new Christmas tradition and hold a two-hour long grief workshop open to residents, families and guests to honor and remember those loved ones that are no longer with us. The holiday season in particular can be extremely difficult to go through when you have lost a loved one.

This workshop will be a way to work through any grief and also to share, remember and honor those

Orange Goo

1 small tub of Cool Whip

By Terri Schoonover, administrative assistant

In a medium sauce pan, combine water, orange Jello, vanilla pudding and Tapioca pudding. Stir to thoroughly blend. Cook over medium heat, stirring often until thick and somewhat translucent (about 10-15 minutes). DO NOT boil.

Terri first made this recipe in 1978 and is still cooking it up for her family today. While it doesn’t sound much like a Christmas dessert, it is so popular among her boys that they make it for their own families.

Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature, stirring 1 3 oz box of orange Jello frequently to prevent film from 1 3 oz box of vanilla pudding- Cook- forming on top of the mixture. n-Serve kind (NOT instant) When cool, stir in oranges with juice and combine thoroughly. Then 1 3 oz box of tapioca puddingfold in 1 or 2 cups of Cool Whip Cook-n-Serve kind (NOT instant) until blended.

3 cups water Place in a serving bowl and 1 6-8oz can of mandarin oranges refrigerate overnight to set.

Pecan Snowball Cookies

Who doesn’t have a great holiday recipe that they have passed on from one generation to the next?

Stephanie Oehlert has a great recipe for Pecan Snowball cookies.

This recipe was given to her by her grandmother.

½ lb. butter 4 Tbsp sugar 2 cups chopped pecans 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla Cream sugar and butter, then add other ingredients. Make into small balls and bake at 375°F 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned. Shake on powdered sugar before serving.
