Chuck Gillentine discusses his wine making and new St. Louis winery at our Small Business Day.
Small Business Day delights September Small Business Day brought us Chuck Gillentine, owner of Defiance Ridge Vineyard in Defiance, Mo. Chuck discussed his winery, the day-to-day operations, and the rewards and challenges of working in the wine-making and hospitality business. Rooted in the rolling hills of historic Missouri wine country, the 42-acre property boasts a vineyard, tranquil lake and lush garden landscape, and views of the sweeping Missouri River Valley. The winery is open seven days a week, and has a terrace and veranda surrounding an historic farmhouse. Chuck brought samples and answered questions.
Barbara Cockrell, coordinator of homebound and outreach services at the Kirkwood Library, brings The Great American Read to residents.
Resident Betty Spence, whose son Alan owns Spence Vineyards in Napa Valley, Calif, found the program particularly interesting since her son has been in the business for years. Chuck was intrigued that Spence Vineyards is located on Howell Mountain, the area where he currently gets some of the grapes used in his wine. Since the presentation, Betty has connected the two St. Louis-born winemakers! Defiance Ridge Winery is about 25 minutes from Kirkwood. Experience it for yourself by visiting defianceridgevineyards.com.
