Best of Show A M A T E U R Bookshelf quilt is threaded with personal details

Jan Warren’s bookshelf quilt doubles as a portrait of her family. The blanket in the shape of a five-shelf bookcase is chockablock with clues about the Warrens. The piece was the Best of Show Amateur winner in the 2021 Art is Ageless® masterpiece competition. “I tried to incorporate books in it that have meaning to us, that refer to our hobbies or places we’ve been,” Jan said. A Bible and other religious texts attest to the importance of faith in the Warren household. Spines made from patterns featuring saxophones and notes demonstrate their love of music. Three Kansas universities each have their own volume. So do many holidays, which reflect Jan’s enjoyment
of seasonal decorating. On the top shelf, some books reference Jan’s Scotch-Irish and Swiss heritage. A stitched title on one spine reads “Lindsay,” her grandmother’s maiden name, and “Scotland,” her homeland. The Warrens’ nationality is represented by fabric in red, white and blue. The pleasure of Jan’s bookshelf quilt is in all the details she layered into it. In these choices, you can see her mind at work: a scrap of a red-and-white gingham print became a volume labeled “Cookbook.” Most home cooks will instantly recognize the reference to the “Betty Crocker Cookbook” and its iconic gingham cover. To add other titles to the spines of some books, Jan used pieces of selvage—the edge on the side of woven fabric that prevents it from unraveling. It’s often printed with the name of the fabric pattern, and Jan turned many of these into book titles. For example, she matched the title “Fiddle Dee—It Was Meant to Be” to a book in the children’s section. In addition to books, Jan styled her shelf with a globe, fishbowl, blue and white china plates, and prints from four national parks: three the Warrens have visited and the Grand Canyon, where they’re headed next. “It was fun to put it together and see what fabrics looked good next to one another,” Jan said. “And I wanted to be sure I put in leaning books and stacked books and some other objects to make it look like a real bookshelf.” Though Jan is new to quilting, she learned to sew in junior high. First, she made several holiday-themed quilts to add to her holiday decorations. Then a bookshelf quilt caught her eye on Pinterest, an online image-sharing service. “I thought that would be a good way to use up scraps,” Jan said. It turned out so well that an artist friend urged her to enter the Art is Ageless competition at Salina (Kan.) Presbyterian Manor where she qualified for the masterpiece competition.

Best of Show P R O F E S S I O N A L Developing a line toward perfection It took Carol Rondinelli about 30 hours to sketch out her Professional Best of Show-winning piece “Just me and Teddy in a Strange new world.” But the story behind the work and the reasons why she drew it developed over a lifetime. “My husband died three years ago,” Carol said. “He knew he was dying, and we talked about it. We had this big Teddy Bear in the closet. I told him if you go first, you know who will replace you? That Teddy Bear in the closet.” When she saw a photograph of a deeply wooded, and unfamiliar place, and remembered the conversations she’d had with her husband Carl, Carol Rondinelli the story she would put to paper became clear. “I’m in a group where photographers provide photos for artists to use as reference,” Carol said. “I saw that one, and it hit home emotionally. When you’re left by yourself, when you’ve been together for 57 years, it’s kind of scary.” In Carol’s masterful drawing, the foreboding denseness of the unknown woods ahead, seem less frightening by the warmth of the Teddy Bear held in a girl’s hand. “I wanted the bear to stand out,” Carol said. It did—as did the piece—which won the Professional Best of Show in the annual Art is Ageless® masterpiece competition. The piece was a local winner in the competition at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan. Carol has been studying and crafting artwork for more than 40 years. Until recently, she taught a weekly art class at Aberdeen Village. In the 1980s, she took classes from nationally recognized artists such as Robert Gunn and Lee Hammond, a Leawood, Kan. resident, who has written more than 30 art instructional books. In addition to the Best of Show piece, the Art is Ageless judges also recognized Carol’s talent for her entry “Kansas Girl,” which is a drawing of an up-close view of a sunflower. “I’m kind of narrow-minded and go down the path of detail and realism,” Carol said of her work. “I’ve always been an organized person. I’m the kind of person who goes around and straightens pictures and pushes chairs up to the table. I sort of just like things neat.”

As a kid, Herbert always wanted an electric train set, but it wasn’t until he was an adult that he actually got one. Today, he has an entire bedroom in his apartment dedicated to his train—”Hale’s Trestle” is just one part of the train station.
