Best of Show A M A T E U R For Giblin, painting was just the latest in a long line of personal challenges While most people like to stick to what they know and play to their strengths, Joey Giblin has a slightly different outlook on life. “I always like to try things I don’t think I can do—SCUBA diving, sky diving, ballet (big, big problems there),” said Joey. It was that sense of adventure—and the need to always push herself outside of her comfort zone— that initially led Joey to take up painting. “I was a commercial interior designer for 30 years, but that’s very mechanical—space planning, sitting at a drawing board. I always knew I could draw, but I had taken painting in college and didn’t Joey Giblin think it was something I could do,” said Joey. “So, I tried oil painting about three years ago thinking it would be a hoot and ended up loving it.” During the process, Joey found that painting fulfilled something within her that had been missing. “My body changes when I do something creative, I feel peace and energy at the same time,” said Joey. “My career used to do that for me, so this has really replaced what I lost in retirement.” Along with the physical and psychological effects, Joey also began to get a sense of pride in her work and a desire to share them with others—ultimately leading her to enter her painting, “Neighbors,” in the 2020 Art is Ageless® competition. “I just thought they would enjoy it, I wasn’t looking so much at the contest,” said Joey. “I just thought it was something they would enjoy seeing.” And they did. The piece was a winner in the Newton Presbyterian Manor Art is Ageless exhibit, which earned her an automatic entry in PMMA’s system-wide masterpiece competition. The painting won “best of show” at the masterpiece level in the competition’s amateur division. “I’m still shocked, I didn’t see it coming! It’s really hard to evaluate your own paintings, so I’m just thrilled—I’m tickled by it,” said Joey. While it was Joey’s first time entering Art is Ageless, her connection to Newton Presbyterian Manor began years earlier when her mother-in-law moved into the community following a severe illness—an experience that was so positive that Joey ultimately went on to serve on the Newton Presbyterian Manor advisory council. Now, having experienced the thrill of being involved with Art is Ageless herself, Joey thinks others should join in whether they think of themselves as artistic or not. “I would encourage other people to give art a try,” said Joey. “All of us have a creative bug in us and it’s good for our mental and emotional well-being.”

Best of Show P R O F E S S I O N A L ‘Best of Show’ artist picked up paint brushes after mastering the violin On her usual route to symphony practice, Nancy Luttrell often took a photo of the northeast corner of Douglas and Main in downtown Wichita. She was drawn to the antique clock that hangs off of One Main Place and Georgia Gerber’s bronze sculpture of a man reading on the sidewalk nearby. “I just kept taking pictures of it from my car while I was driving, which is bad,” Nancy laughed. “One time, the picture I took especially excited me, because the light on that corner was unique in its brilliance.” The photos served as reference material for her painting “6:30 Wichita,” which was named Best of Nancy Luttrell Show in the professional category in the 2020 Art is Ageless® masterpiece competition. In the painting, the street corner is bathed in golden light, though the gray-blue sky and purple shadows indicate dusk is near. “6:30 Wichita” will be featured in the 2021 Art is Ageless calendar, along with Nancy’s painting “Poinsettias,” also a masterpiece level winner. Both pieces were winners in the Wichita Presbyterian Manor exhibit. A trained classical violinist, Nancy began painting ten years ago in a watercolor class at Mark Arts. Since then, she has also explored acrylics, the medium of both her masterpiece level winners. “I’ve never had any time for it before,” Nancy said. “I never took any art in school or anything. There was just no time — what we did was all consuming.” She began studying music at age 5, with piano lessons. Her teacher played viola with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, so Nancy added violin lessons at age 9. Eventually, she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Wichita State, where she later served as a professor of violin performance and a member of the Fairmount Quartet and the Wiedeman Trio. She traveled extensively to play throughout the United States and in Europe, and her solos, chamber music and orchestra performances have been broadcast on NPR. Nancy joined the Wichita Symphony Orchestra 52 years ago and continues to play as a member of the first violin section. She stepped back from her role as associate concertmaster when she retired from WSU in 2012. Nancy didn’t know much about making art when she started taking lessons, and she says she wasn’t even sure it would be something she would enjoy. “I would encourage anybody to not be afraid to try,” she said. “Some people tell me, ‘I just couldn’t do that.’ Well, how would you know? I didn’t know I could do it either.”

Doris’ passion for cross stitch began in retirement in 1986. She exquisitely stitched hundreds of pieces—often gifting them to family and friends. In 2010, she Leta Sherwood, completed her first “one88 over one” counted cross stitch piece and never looked Arkansas City, Kan. back. “Golden Gate Heaven and Earth Design” was her final work of art—taking three and a half years to complete—and was a gift to her son, Wayne. This was the only piece she ever entered into a competition.
