We respectfully acknowledge Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as traditional owners and custodians of this land on which we stand. We pay our respect to Elders past, present, and emerging. Presbyterian Ladies’ College values our place in their ancestral lands nestled upon the ancient pathways or trails of Wardun Beelier Bidi, linking Derbal Yiragan (Swan River) with Wardun (Indian Ocean). We acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and non-Indigenous Australians to the education of all children and people in this country.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to PLC Open Garden Day, a much-loved tradition that brings our community together in celebration of spring. This year is particularly special, with four never-before-seen gardens each offering a unique glimpse into the beauty, creativity, and care that make the gardens of Peppermint Grove so remarkable.

From the Principal

From the Principal

My sincere thanks go to the garden owners who have so graciously welcomed us into their gardens, and to the dedicated Open Garden Day Committee, PLC Parents, and many volunteers whose enthusiasm and hard work make this event possible. Whether you are joining us for the first time or returning as part of an annual tradition, I hope you enjoy exploring the beautiful gardens and discovering the talents of our PLC students. From their service learning and entrepreneurial initiatives in the marketplace to their creativity in the art exhibition and musical performances throughout the day, there is much to enjoy and celebrate. 7 View Street Mid-Century Sophistication The garden sits on the site of an old tennis court, which made way for this wonderful corner of Peppermint Grove in 1965. The single-level architecture and private entry transport you to a world of utter relaxation and peaceful living, and the gardens, nestled under the old, giant trees on the verge allow you to bask in the dappled sunshine as you wander through the different spaces where living and nature cohabit in a most enchanting way.

7 View Street

The house is entirely surrounded by large-scale plantings, which interact with the verge in an especially social way.. Here you will find the beautiful bark of a white-flowering crepe myrtle 'Natchez', the variegated leaves of a New Zealand Christmas tree, a well-established white-flowering abutilon mallow, and a night-blooming cestrum (jasmine). These have been underplanted with pride of Madeira (Echium candicans), rock rose (Cistus), blue chalk sticks, and Euphorbia, which emerges from the rocky crevices of the low wall, and, on the other side, a large hibiscus.

6

The internal gardens are presented as a series of walled courtyards, which offer sanctuary and private places to wander at will. On entering the front pathway, one finds oneself admiring a large 'Gollum' jade on one side with bird baths on the other – a favourite stop for the neighbourhood dogs to have a drink. A one-of-a-kind central courtyard opens off the two wings of the house, with a stunning pergola covered in a large and ancient wisteria, whose gnarled trunk adds seminal character to this

sophisticated entertaining area, as well as the espaliered lime trees on either side of the rear gate. The light falls from all four sides as the day passes, dynamic but dappled and peaceful. It is wonderful not only in summer but in winter, too. Beyond, another large garden encloses the living spaces on three sides. Some of the garden features are original to the property. A huge Magnolia, suited in size to the enormous urn which dominates the north facing garden, is planted in a raised garden bed providing shade for giant spider lilies and pale yellow clivias underneath. Nearby, one can find a line of cypress trees, an old world rose in soft pink, dragon trees, Coprosma, Murraya, and cycads, as well as the pops of colour and texture offered by the ground plantings of lavenders, oregano, Limonium, Buxus, agave, ornamental grasses, cowboy cacti, Pittosporum, native violets, and 'Cousin It'. Of special note in this outdoor space is the beautiful strawberry guava, whose bright red-brown bark is rare and simply enchanting in such a mature specimen. Wandering along the back garden, one finds an old mulberry tree and pot culture – lime and succulents – as well as Magnolia 'Teddy Bear'. In the old Artist's Studio garden, now a pristine pool area, African lilies adorn the pool-side, while two wonderful evergreen Singapore frangipanis lend a distinctly sub-tropical feel to this sunny and private courtyard. The avid garden wanderer will uncover stunning beauty and peace in this thoughtful and unique garden!

The Birches

8

This garden has been reimagined into a breathtaking sanctuary, the result of a bold new build and a thoughtful design brief. Like Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms Estate in Palm Springs, California, the quintessential blending of a mid-20th century modern landscape with outdoor luxury, the gardens at The Birches are visible from all aspects of the various wings of the home and integral to its lifestyle. House and garden come alive especially in the summer months when the whole home can be opened out into the gardens.

into the sensuous, serpentine form of a Japanese serpent. At the western boundary, bamboo-lined fences are underplanted with Zoysia (no-mow grass), forming dreamlike cushions of undulating, emerald-green foliage. Against the sculptural trunks of the deciduous trees in winter, this grass continues to glow, thoughtfully positioned to capture the northern winter sun. Throughout the property, more than 30 tonnes of Donnybrook stone have been artfully placed, their forms adding a distinctly Japanese aesthetic to these corners of the garden.

Step through the wrought-iron gates of The Birches, named for the elegant European Silver Birch Grove gracing the entrance, and you’ll find a landscape designed to delight at every turn. These birches – with their papery bark and bright green leaves emerging on slender stems – playfully interact with the Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy', whose small, bright pink-purple flowers and clean red-toned leaves in spring bring interest and depth to the front, formal garden beds.

Closer to the pool, plantings of palms, frangipanis, and cotton hibiscus, some carefully cloud-pruned, create a sense of rhythm, calm, and simplicity, sympathetic to the compound's modernity.

One of the most striking features on entering the garden is the magnificent Chinese talllow tree, carefully relocated from the original garden to its new commanding position, underplanted with cycads, New Zealand rock lilies, Alternanthera 'Little Ruby', and Philodendron 'Xanadu'. Nearby, jacarandas bloom providing constant seasonal colour. Along the colonnaded entrance, lush, textural greenery creates an exotic and enchanting atmosphere. Sago palms are interspersed with repeating Pittosporum tobira 'Miss Muffet', carefully clipped

The star in the rear garden must be the flowering Hong Kong orchid tree, whose countless pink flowers will weep over the rooflines by the dining areas and artist-studio aspects once mature. Kentia palms, lady palms (Rhapis), reed palms, golden cane palms, elephant ears, tractor seat plants, Monstera deliciosa, Ajuga, Brazilian tree ferns, crinum river lilies, and heliconias create a lush, subtropical atmosphere while remaining well suited to the local climate. The Birches is a garden of resilience and renewal, a place that comes into its own in summer, a place for entertaining and for solitude, where sculptural beauty, botanical diversity, and thoughtful design to aspect and sunlight combine to create a restorative landscape.

34 Irvine Street There will be music in this garden from 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

22 Irvine Street The garden at 22 Irvine Street is a wonderful reflection of the generous proportions and heritage-listed character of this muchloved property. Set within an expansive estate, the elevated grounds of this young garden will provide its visitors with an amazing sense of its north-facing space, colour and texture. There is a lovely sense of openness throughout, with the planting carefully arranged to soften the scale of the grounds while drawing the eye towards the house and its beautiful verandah. As the garden matures, these generous spaces will become increasingly layered and romantic. Inspired by traditional cottage gardens with a touch of the French countryside, the planting palette features predominantly pinks and purples. Softly coloured roses, vibrant salvias, creeping jasmine, Buxus, lavender, purple and pink Limonium, Cistus, and Murraya hedging bring colour, texture, and structure to the garden beds.

22 Irvine Street

Beautiful mature trees frame the landscape, complemented by a young liquidambar, evergreen tuckeroo trees planted in an elegant avenue, an ancient frangipani, and evergreen bay trees which lushly frame the tableau on three sides.

10

The generous lawn gives the front verandah unobstructed views out over the garden from its sunny aspect, all the better to watch the birds, which adore visiting a garden of such peace and verdance. Remarkably peaceful, this is a rare garden that will, over time, offer both the elegance of a mature Peppermint Grove setting and the space to genuinely enjoy the outdoors.

Homemade Lemonade available in the garden.

38A Johnston Street 38A Johnston Street is a wonderful garden of beauty and interest, designed, planted, and cared for by a knowledgeable and avid gardener for decades. Originally from Melbourne, the garden's owner developed an appreciation for the camellias and magnificent mature trees that flourish in Victoria's more acidic soils. She also came to love the timeless combination of green and white, complemented by generous underplantings that keep the garden lush and verdant. These recurring colours, layered with an extraordinary variety of plants, have become the defining features of this enchanting garden.

38A Johnston Street

The entire front of the house is covered in ancient and very healthy Boston ivy, which lends gravitas to the profile of the garden as one enters the space. Along the fenceline, snowdrops flourish in winter, with their drooping heads of white, and as they fade, flowering jasmine, verdantly takes on the role of covering the ground in bright green growth with tender white flowers..

12

In pots, a kumquat tree prolifically fruits in winter, as well as a purple blooming, small leafed mallow bush. At the windows are white blooming azaleas and hellebores. The approach is layered, experimental, not sharply hedged, and added to thoughtfully over time. Matching the purple tone of the mallow bush is the giant jacaranda tree, which provides emerald green cover and important shade to the garden below. A whiteflowering bougainvillea climbs a metal arch, with a thoughtfully espalliered camellia behind, adding glamour and depth to the experiential feeling of this wonderfully mature garden.

Decorative urns and pots abound along the sides of the house, where space is more limited. Geums, Euphorbia, succulents, and lavender all are on display. One of the most enchanting pieces of pot culture are the two bonsai set at the eastern fence: A tiny Moreton Bay fig accompanied by an equally tiny Ficus, which looks like a small person seated, observing the many visitors to the garden. Along this entire fenceline, a healthy and large jasmine vine happily climbs along, cut back to form every year. The rear garden has large and mature specimens - an old liquidambar, a giant flowering hibiscus, mulberry, and Magnolia 'Little Gem' happily co-mingle with plantings of butterkins, succulents, sea daisies, Ballota, Buxus, gardenias, Peruvian lilies, creeping bacopa, and fragrant Stephanotis vines. Another whiteflowering bougainvillea adds to the garden's signature palette of green and white. At every turn, the eye will fall on a new and interesting planting, inviting a considered pause. One can well imagine spending countless hours at the beautiful tables, so well protected under the high and structural shade trees. What a beautiful and peaceful aspect!

38A Johnston Street

72 Leake Street Weerianna Weerianna's recent restoration is shaped by the relationship between the home's heritage character and its contemporary adaptation, with the garden binding old and new. The landscape draws inspiration from the signature circular and arched forms of the original Sir J.J. Talbot Hobbs architecture, creating a sense of continuity that allows the property to evolve while remaining true to its heritage identity.

72 Leake Street

The arrival sequence is conceived as a gradual unfolding of the home. Visitors enter through the grand arched gateway framing the view of the restored main facades, before moving along the generous shaded verandahs through a sequence of garden views towards the entry, where a striking circular pool forms the centrepiece of the approach and outlook from the home.

14

The lush and private garden spaces remain ever-present whether arriving, moving through the residence, or looking outward towards the river. They re-enforce the relationship between architecture and landscape and a seamless connection from inside to out. Generous wraparound verandahs, an elevated alfresco and terrace, poolside gardens and a private stable studio court provide many moments to enjoy the seasons and the day, all bound together with the grand flowing lawn perfect for those large milestone celebrations and gatherings. The landscape species build upon the site's established framework, retaining significant existing elements including the poinciana, mature palms, and historic mango tree, while introducing a carefully curated mix of native and exotic species.

Pleached bay trees establish structure and enclosure along key garden edges, while weeping lilly pillies soften views and introduce movement throughout the landscape. Feature planting around the pool and arrival sequence creates moments of focus and orientation, helping guide visitors through the site and reinforcing important sight lines from within the home. A layered planting palette creates depth, texture and seasonal variation. Tractor seat plants, leopard plants, philodendrons and bluebird succulents bring richness to shaded garden rooms, while creeping thyme and native violet soften the ground plane and blur the edges between pathways and planting beds. Feature specimens, including the Queensland bottle tree and new citrus plantings, are carefully positioned to terminate views, anchor outdoor spaces and frame key outlooks between the house, garden and river landscape beyond. Together, the planting composition creates a garden that feels established, immersive, and enduring. Well beyond its 1-2 year establishment. Materiality reinforces the dialogue between heritage and contemporary intervention. Locally sourced Donnybrook stone is used in dry-laid walls and paving elements, its warm sandy tones providing a deliberate counterpoint to the cool heritage limestone of the original residence. Combined with carefully detailed masonry, recycled timber, and brick salvaged through restoration, the palette establishes a cohesive relationship between architecture and landscape, grounding the garden firmly within both its historical context and its contemporary life.

One of Peppermint Grove’s earliest homes, Weerianna has occupied its elevated position overlooking Freshwater Bay for more than 150 years. The site’s first known residence was a seven-room timber house built in the 1870s and occupied by surveyor Charles Crossland while he worked on the Perth–Fremantle railway.

72 Leake Street

Weerianna History

In 1896, Horace and Jessie Sholl purchased the property and commissioned architects Wilkinson and Smith to extend the original cottage with a single-storey limestone residence. Just three years later, prominent architect Sir Talbot Hobbs was engaged to transform Weerianna further, designing a substantial two-storey limestone addition with a grand staircase, riverside lounge, four upstairs bedrooms, and sweeping verandahs overlooking the bay. The Sholls were among the first families to settle in the emerging suburb, and Weerianna quickly became a prominent local landmark and social gathering place. Over subsequent generations, the home evolved through a series of alterations while retaining much of its original character. In 2020, architect Meaghan White purchased Weerianna, beginning a carefully researched restoration that celebrates its heritage while adapting it for contemporary family life. This extends to the property’s original stables, which have been sensitively restored and retain their original horse troughs — a charming reminder of Weerianna’s earliest days. Together, these surviving details preserve the many layers of history that have shaped this remarkable Peppermint Grove property.

Painting a Safer Crossing

Throughout the day, you are invited to attend ‘Fuse’ – PLC’s Creative Arts and Technology Exhibition showcasing works by students from Years 7 to 12. This exhibition celebrates the impressive talents of our passionate emerging artists here at PLC, featuring a diverse range of Visual Arts, Textiles, Media Studies, Materials, and Technology pieces.

At the View Street crossing, PLC students are bringing a vibrant new street mural to life, creating a meaningful connection between the Senior School, Junior School and Boarding House. Designed by the 2025 Reconciliation Captains, Gizzelle Matasia and Isobel Egan, and developed with First Nations students across the College, the artwork draws on traditional Indigenous art to express connection to Country and community. Created to encourage driver awareness and slower speeds, the mural is also a celebration of the PLC community, painted live today as part of Open Garden Day. The project is proudly supported by Streets Alive and the Road Safety Commission, with artistic expertise from Sioux Tempestt.

The exhibition can be accessed by the School entry on View Street and is open from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
