Artificially distracted

When was the last time you sat in a waiting room, or on a bus or train, and didn’t take out your phone to pass the time? When did you last experience true silence (apart from sleeping) – a space of time completely devoid of activity and noise? If you’re like me, I’m guessing it might have been a while ago and you can’t quite pinpoint a particular moment in your mind.

Prof Stephen Williams has written an excellent article this month on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI).

He comments on the kind of society we have become by saying, “…the lives of many westerners are lived in a state of permanent, breathless distraction.” He cites this kind of atmosphere as the reason for our acceptance and lack of discernment when it comes to artificial intelligence: “…we use technologies uncritically most of the time.” It is perhaps our tendency not to biblically consider these technologies that is most worrying. “Do they tend to edge God out of the picture so that we settle for and are dependent on that which is not God?” C.S. Lewis’ book, The Screwtape Letters, suggests that it is exactly this unthinking, distracted society that delights the devil. Screwtape, the senior demon, writes to his nephew Wormwood: “We will make the whole universe a noise in the end…The melodies and silences of heaven will be shouted down…”

Embracing silence was an important issue for Fred Rogers, an American Presbyterian minister who began a television career in the late 60s. Rogers, through his popular children’s programme, advocated for space to think and the importance of listening to and respecting others. Little known to Irish audiences, Rogers remains a national treasure in the US and is the subject of a new film starring Tom Hanks, featured in this edition. It is a slightly odd, yet utterly compelling movie that depicts how Rogers generously and graciously interacted with other people.

He died in 2003 and would probably be dismayed at how our use of AI is slowly diminishing human to human contact. He once said, “If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet…There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

We serve a relational God. Jesus outlined that the two most important things for us to focus on is our love for God, followed by our love for others. Whilst loving our neighbour can be a struggle or a sacrifice, it cannot be artificial. New technologies may serve many beneficial purposes but our use of them needs to be biblically thought through and measured; never replacing our opportunity to share the love of Jesus.

Mental health and mission Dear Editor Thank you from afar for a very relevant February edition of the Herald. The postal system excelled itself and my magazine arrived in Kathmandu on 3 February! I am writing to say thanks and draw attention to the fact that these issues are a struggle right around the world.

Firstly thank you – as someone who has benefited from the support and care of Helen Johnston as Mission Support Officer. The resources as outlined on pages 16-17 are much appreciated and the potential problems flagged up by Helen and Joy Gowdy are very real. We do not take our physical, emotional and spiritual health for granted and are very glad of all the help offered.

Secondly, to acknowledge the reality of these struggles everywhere. We all need to be proactive in maintaining mental health. Just a few weeks ago the Nepali Times

I’m frightened

reported that according to the World Health Organisation, Nepal has the 7th highest suicide rate in the world (24.9 per 100,000). Stress, hopelessness, depression, substance abuse and mental illness lie behind these tragedies. Nepal has only 0.13 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, and most of them are concentrated in urban areas.

As an organisation dedicated to working for ‘fullness of life for all’ in Nepal, UMN has been active in addressing the problems. There have been various initiatives, the most recent being a ‘Mental Health Day’ in October. (Find out more by going online to umn.org.np then clicking on ‘News & Stories’. You will see a report and a link to a short video).

No matter where we are in the world and no matter how deep the problem may seem there are always actions that people of faith can take to support and care – because Christ offered life to the full.

IN THE ROUND | NEWS Rev David Bruce to be next Moderator The Presbyterian Church in Ireland’s next Moderator will be Rev David Bruce, who is Secretary to the Council for Mission in Ireland.

The Banbridge-born 62-year-old received the most votes from the Church’s 19 presbyteries when they met in various locations across Ireland at the beginning of February. Mr Bruce, who lives near Lisburn and worships at Elmwood Presbyterian Church, will be the denomination’s 175th Moderator since 1840 and the first in over 20 years to come from a position outside of parish ministry.

Speaking shortly after his election, Mr Bruce said, “I am hugely honoured to be invited by the Church to fulfil this role, and humbled that anyone should imagine I am able to do it. I will approach the role with prayerful excitement as we face the great task of commending Christ to Ireland, north and south, in a year of major change on this island and beyond.

“With the UK having left the European Union last week and we enter this transition phase, a new set of political relationships will be formed, both on this island and beyond. As members of an allIreland Church we will remain fully committed to our people and their witness on both sides of the Irish border... The formation of the Northern Ireland Executive in Stormont, and Ireland’s general election this week indicate the importance of careful conversations with politicians, something I will be keen to continue during my year.”

Alongside Mr Bruce, this year’s nominees were Rev Dr Trevor McCormick (minister of First Kilrea), Rev Richard Murray (minister of Drumreagh and Dromore churches) and Rev Mairisíne Stanfield (minister of First Bangor).

Mr Bruce received 14 votes (Ards, Armagh, North Belfast, East Belfast, Carrickfergus, Derry and Donegal, Down, Dromore, Dublin and Munster, Iveagh, Monaghan, Newry, Templepatrick, Tyrone); Mr Murray received three (Ballymena, Omagh, and Route); and Dr McCormick (Coleraine and Limavady) and Mrs Stanfield (South Belfast) both received one.

Mr Bruce will be formally elected as Moderator by the General Assembly in June.

Mental health – a huge pastoral concern PCI has welcomed the pledge by new Northern Ireland Minister of Health, Robin Swann, that suicide prevention is among his key priorities.

Lindsay Conway (Secretary to PCI’s Council for Social Witness) said mental health and related problems were a constant presence in the pastoral care being provided by churches, both by ministers and pastoral care workers.

He welcomed the Health Minister’s determination to “put concrete actions in place that make a lasting impact” and his intention to convene a meeting of the Ministerial Coordination Group on Suicide Prevention.

“The increase in our pastoral work is as a direct result of the current difficulties within the mental health services being provided by the health and social care trusts. Patients are waiting for months for their first appointment with a mental health professional, which places individuals under unbelievable pressure, leaving families in crisis,” Mr Conway said.

He also pointed out that churches of all denominations were working quietly in communities across Ireland, providing a range of services on the ground from crèches to youth groups, lunch clubs for senior citizens to foodbanks and debt counselling. “As Christians we are called to demonstrate Jesus’ love for people, which means putting our faith into practical action and simple Christian caring, which is a powerful social witness of the gospel.”

Mr Conway explained that ‘Flourish’ is a resource that the main Churches and the Health Promotion Agency have established to support and train ministers and pastoral care workers in the area of suicide and the long-term aftercare of those affected by suicide. He also drew attention to PCI’s own counselling ministry to adults called ‘Fresh Light’, which is available to people of all faiths and none.

Praise for new prison approach PCI Moderator, Dr William Henry, praised the Prison Service’s focus on rehabilitation and vulnerable prisoners when he visited Davis House, the new £54million prison block at HMP Maghaberry in County Antrim.

“In so many different aspects, the new building has been specifically designed to put rehabilitation at the centre of the work of the prison, along with support for those who are vulnerable. When talking about PCI Moderator, Dr William Henry, with prison the prisoners, I was impressed by governor David Kennedy in Maghaberry’s the repeated use of the phrase new Davis House. ‘men in our care’, which is a demonstration of this different approach,” Dr Henry said.

“I was also pleased to see, and hear, the value that the Prison Service places on chaplaincy and the role of the chaplains from across the denominations.”

PCI ministers to prisoners and staff across all of Northern Ireland’s various institutions, including HMPs Magilligan and Hydebank Wood College, and Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre. On request, PCI ministers visit prisons in the Republic of Ireland.

Speaking after the visit, Rev David Bruce (Secretary to the Council for Mission in Ireland) said, “As a Church we continue to be committed to prison chaplaincy across Northern Ireland….but it also needs to be adequately funded.

“All the Churches receive funding towards the provision of chaplains, but like many public services, the cuts that have been imposed in recent years have severely restricted what can be done.

With the restoration of devolution and the appointment of a Minister for Justice, we hope that a more realistic enhanced funding provision will be put in place to secure the service in the future.”

Brexit – a redefining day PCI Moderator, Dr William Henry, has described the UK’s formal withdrawal from the European Union as an end of an era, which will redefine relationships.

Referring to a presbytery visit which gave him the opportunity to meet congregations on both sides of the Irish border, Dr Henry said, “What was apparent to me then, across all of my engagements with farmers and business people among others, is that while much of the national discussion has concentrated on economic factors, the impact on people and relationships in particular is perhaps more important. At the centre of all of this are people who are simply trying to do the best for their families, employees and communities.”

He added that important work is still to be done in negotiating new arrangements and said, “As that work takes place, we continue to pray for those in leadership, and especially the newly-formed Northern Ireland Executive, as it seeks to find solutions to the many presenting issues that remain.”

2020 Recognition Awards

PCI’s Council for Social Witness will be hosting a new play, Invictus, on Wednesday 11 March in Assembly Buildings, Belfast at 7pm.

This innovative and powerful play by Alter EGO Creative Solutions is aimed at building resilience in young people; raising awareness, and kickstarting conversations around childhood adversity. Invictus addresses the behaviours and core skills that can be nurtured to help young people overcome and mitigate the damage of toxic stress and successfully navigate a whole host of critical life moments.

Considering Grace: Unpacking the impact Launched in November, Considering Grace: Presbyterians and the Troubles tells the stories of 120 Presbyterians and their experience of the conflict.

To explore the themes emerging from the book, a special conference will take place on Friday 20 March 2020, from 10am-1.30pm, in Assembly Buildings, Belfast.

Entitled ‘Considering Grace: Unpacking the impact’, the conference is primarily for ministers of congregations in Northern Ireland and border areas, and will have wider relevance for other denominations and those working on initiatives that help to address the legacy of the past.

Moderator backs Christian Aid’s year of climate action The Presbyterian Moderator has given his backing to a Christian Aid initiative which calls on churches to take action on climate change.

Speaking after a service at Maze Presbyterian Church, Dr William Henry urged Presbyterians to heed the aid agency’s calls to lobby government for large-scale action to avert a climate catastrophe and to cut the emissions that churches and individuals are responsible for.

Young people at Maze Presbyterian Church have already taken action on plastic pollution by switching from disposable cups to ‘keep cups’ for the hot drinks served on Sundays, and Dr Henry is calling on churches to take action on climate change too.

Helen Newell, Senior Church and Community Officer at Christian Aid, welcomed the Moderator’s support and the first steps taken by the young people at Maze Presbyterian to protect the planet.

“Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face and at Christian Aid we know that many of the poor communities we work with are on the frontline of a crisis they did nothing to cause.”

CSW care staff at the latest induction training launching the 2020 Recognition Awards at Assembly Buildings in Belfast.

To honour the contributions made by staff and volunteers in our churches, PCI’s homes and support units, the Council for Social Witness (CSW) has launched its fourth Recognition Awards and is asking for nominations for outstanding individuals, or teams, as they reach out to others in a practical way.

Encouraging people to nominate, Lindsay Conway, CSW Secretary, said, “Our Church has hundreds of ‘unsung heroes’ – people who give tirelessly of themselves to make life a bit more tolerable and a little happier for hundreds, if not thousands of people.”

IN THE ROUND | NEWS Jubilee launches partnership PCI at Ireland’s National Holocaust programme Jubilee, the multi-award-winning Christian creation care Memorial Day Rev Trevor Gribben (Clerk of the General Assembly and General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland) represented PCI at Ireland’s National Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration in the Mansion House, Dublin.

Organised by the Holocaust Education Trust Ireland, in association with the Department of Justice and Equality and Dublin City Council, the event commemorated the six million Jewish people, and millions of other victims of the Holocaust, murdered by the Nazi regime and their collaborators.

Mr Gribben said, “It was a privilege to represent Presbyterians north and south at this incredibly poignant event.

Collectively, as a society, we must always remember and tell each new generation what happened, to ensure that it does not happen again.”

Abortion disappointment The recommendation that Northern Ireland’s new abortion framework should have no restrictions up to 24 weeks gestation has been greeted with concern and disappointment.

“Regrettable” was how CARE NI chief executive Nola Leach described the position being taken by the GB-based public health bodies who made the recommendation.

“It is striking that GB medical bodies feel the need to interfere, ignoring the views of Northern Ireland health professionals, many of whom are opposed to the new abortion framework,” she added.

Dawn McAvoy, co-founder of Both Lives Matter said, “Women deserve better than medical bodies aligning more closely to pro-abortion ideologies than science-based evidence.

We urge our newly-formed Northern Ireland Assembly and the Secretary of State to seek to maximise protections and enable both lives as far as humanly possible, because both lives matter.”

IN BRIEF New fundraising initiative Biblica and Hodder have announced a new partnership which will help fund Biblica’s Bible translation efforts around the world.

The ‘Give to Translate’ campaign will encourage readers of the NIV to consider making a financial contribution to help fund new Bible translations and revisions around the world. This is in addition to the existing percentage from every NIV sale which already contributes to Biblica’s translation efforts.

Congregations urged to register with EA for youth work funding The Education Authority (EA) has launched a new scheme, which includes a number of funding streams for regional and local youth work in Northern Ireland.

It is encouraging to see an acknowledgement in the latest EA documentation of the place of faith-based youth work and the significant work carried out with young people by many leaders in churches. PCI is encouraging all its congregations within Northern Ireland who work with young people to register with EA so that they will be able to benefit from funding which will be available later this year.

Applications for various funding streams opens on 3 March 2020, so if your congregation has not already registered, this needs to happen first in order to apply for funding. The registration process will ask for the total number of young people (aged 4-25 years) which the church engages with on an annual basis.

Registration can be on paper, but the easiest and quickest way is to register online at eanifunding.org.uk where there is also further information about the funding scheme. There are also details of funding workshops to provide support on the completion and delivery of EA Youth Service funded programmes.

Care for the Family event Rob Parsons will give an insight into effective public speaking at a Care for the Family event being held in Belfast on Tuesday 12 May. Aimed at anyone who communicates in church, ‘The Heart of Communication’ is touring the UK, with the Stormont Hotel hosting the local event.

Mr Parsons is the founder and chairman of Care for the Family. A bestselling author of over 20 books, he has over 50 years of experience of public speaking.

Moderator pays tribute to former Deputy First Minister

PCI Moderator, Dr William Henry, has paid tribute to Northern Ireland’s first Deputy First Minister, Seamus Mallon.

“On behalf of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, I extend our deepest sympathy to Mr Mallon’s family, his friends and colleagues, as they mourn and remember our very first Deputy First Minister, and a man whose passion for peace, went hand in hand with his commitment to public service.”

St Patrick is claimed by both Protestants and Roman Catholics as one of their spiritual fathers.

This month we will celebrate St Patrick’s Day on 17 March and it is a public holiday throughout the island. Presbyterians, 1 in 10 in the island, being a major part of the almost one quarter of the people of the Protestant faith, will rejoice in the missionary endeavours of St Patrick who brought the Christian message to this Emerald Isle, this land which was famed, in the past, as the ‘land of saints and scholars’.

In our celebrations we will be sharing with our fellow countrymen this land and its rich heritage and we are proud that the spirit of St Patrick has been embodied in so many, Protestant and Roman Catholic alike.

Many of our forefathers left these shores and crossed the sea to found America and there on St Patrick’s Day America becomes green and Irish for a day…

America, in celebrating St Patrick’s Day, is acknowledging the ongoing story of the missionary spirit of the Christian church which led St Patrick to Ireland, St Columba from Ireland to Scotland and the Rev Francis Makemie, a Presbyterian minister, to leave the shores of Donegal in north-west Ireland to become a ‘founding father of American Presbyterianism’…

The inter-relations between America and Ireland are acknowledged. This American-Irish connection owes much to her two traditions, Protestant and Roman Catholic, which influenced America and inspired her to achieve what is best and most worthy in its spirit of tolerance and religious freedom…

Muslims head for 1,000 million

According to a New Dehli newspaper quoting the Islamic Conference, the Muslim population of the world will reach one billion by the end of this century.

More than 40 nations of the world have significant Muslim populations. Four countries have Muslim populations of more than 100 million – Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. There are about 60 million Muslims in the Soviet Union and more than 50 million in China.

Jews meet German church reps

A recent first national-level meeting between FRG (West German) Jewish and Evangelical (United, Lutheran, Reformed) representatives was described as “an encounter that was long overdue” by the bulletin of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Among other things, the EKD report observed that “Jewish people cannot understand why ministers and parish councils…fail to speak out in condemnation of anti-Semitic graffiti or desecration of Jewish cemeteries.

Silence is bound to be interpreted as approval”.

Jewish participants also suggested that the “unique (actions against Jews during the Hitler Reich) must not be made to appear ordinary” by using words like ‘holocaust’ or ‘final solution’ in connection with “debates on current issues”.

Presbyterian Women’s annual conference Well-known author Sophie de Witt is guest speaker at this year’s Presbyterian Women’s annual conference, which takes place at Assembly Buildings, Belfast on Thursday 7 May.

She is passionate about one-to-one discipleship across the generations and says, “I am praying that the women will be built up and encouraged in their faith and indeed become an army of disciplers…and, that this ministry will have ripple effects for the kingdom in the many communities and even beyond.”

This sentiment is particularly apt considering the Side by Side theme which has been adopted by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland for women’s ministry over the past year.

The PW annual conference is not a ticketed event and is open to all women. It is an opportunity to join with others from across Ireland to come together to worship and celebrate all that God is doing in our lives and through his church.

As in previous annual conferences, there will be praise, which this year will be led by Erin McBride and Emma Smyth.

The annual meeting takes place between 2pm to 3.45pm, while the evening celebration runs from 7.30pm to 9pm.

DIARY DATES Faith and freedom in the Middle East

One Anothers A variety of events aimed at exploring the different aspects of building the church community are planned for the end of April and beginning of May. One Anothers will have Dr Ed Welch, author of Side by Side and Caring for One Another, as guest speaker, and will take place at two venues.

The event on Tuesday 28 April called ‘One Anothers: Building genuine community in the church’ is based at Assembly Buildings, Belfast between 10am and 3.30pm and is a day conference for ministers, elders and other key congregational leaders.

‘One Anothers: Building genuine community in the church’ is also the name of the event on Wednesday 29 April, but this evening gathering is for church members, midweek and small groups. It takes place at Assembly Buildings between 7.45 and 9.30pm.

It is repeated on Thursday 30 April at Union Road Presbyterian Church in Magherafelt between 7.45pm and 9.30pm, and again is geared for church members, midweek and small groups.

Thursday 30 April also sees the hosting of ‘Leading in the one another-ness of church life: Confident in God as we lead in community’ at Assembly Buildings.

Taking place between 10am and 1pm, this will be a morning of equipping for ministers, elders and other key congregational leaders.

One Anothers ends on Friday 1 May with ‘When shame gets in the way of being one anothers: Ministering in an honour shame culture’. PCI is holding a special conference focusing on ‘Faith and Freedom in the Middle East’ on Thursday 23 April in Assembly Buildings, Belfast from 9.30am to 2pm.

The Middle East, the birthplace of Christianity, has undergone much turmoil in recent years. Despite many pressures including the refugee crisis in the region, many Christians continue to worship God and live out their faith and people are coming to faith in Christ.

Rita El-Mounayer, chief executive officer of SAT-7, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. SAT-7 is a Christian satellite television station run by and for the people of the Middle East and North Africa whose vision is to see a growing church in the Middle East and North Africa. Rita has worked with SAT-7 since 1995 and became CEO last April. Born in Lebanon, Rita lived through the violence of the Lebanese civil war as a young girl.

Rita will address topics including people on the move, the role of women and stories of hope in the Middle East.

The conference is open to anyone with a desire to hear more about these issues, and will include table group discussions. Places are limited and advance booking is essential.

Kids’ Big Day Out PCI’s annual event for primary-aged children and their leaders/parents, Kids’ Big Day Out, will this year look at God’s faithfulness over time.

The event will think about how God can see the big picture of his plan for his people and how he is faithful to the promises that he made to Abraham that were partly fulfilled through Jesus and will come fully true in heaven.

The event takes place at Wellington Presbyterian, Ballymena on Saturday 4 April between 1.45pm and 4pm. The cost is £4 each and all children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Tickets are on sale now.

Beyond the pregnancy crisis Richard Houston outlines the work of PCI’s Supporting Families Through Challenging Times task group.

J

oe and Mary were discussing what colour to paint the nursery for their much longed-for first child when the midwife spoke words that would change their lives forever. Sitting in a room in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital the term ‘life-limiting condition’ seemed so clinical, so impersonal and pressed in on them with a crushing force.

Joy had prayed to God for a healthy baby after so many years of trying. But that afternoon, alone in her home, she knew that her baby had died. For 10 weeks she had named him, sung to him, knitted for him, and dreamed of a lifetime of memories with him. He was her son.

Yet her son’s name would never be spoken and his death scarcely acknowledged.

Lucy was just 17 years old. Her boyfriend at the time didn’t want to know and she feared the reaction of her parents.

So, she went alone to the pregnancy crisis centre to discuss her options and took some leaflets from the waiting room.

She read the leaflets before destroying them. Her mind was set. Next week she would arrange an appointment, have the procedure, and hopefully get on with her life.

These stories of silent suffering are not new, but recent changes in Ireland over the past two years have transformed the already difficult conversations around pregnancy crisis, pregnancy loss and preparing to care for children with disabilities. New questions challenge the practical and pastoral care needed to support and journey with those who find themselves having to navigate a course through these circumstances.

Irish society, both north and south of the border, has witnessed a seismic shift on ethical issues, including the value and dignity that we place on human life. The legal landscape along with the social and cultural norms have changed more rapidly and significantly than perhaps we could ever have imagined.

In light of this, how can we care well for those who find themselves considering new options offered by our changing laws – both women and their families?

Following the 2018 General Assembly a task group consisting of medical professionals, ministers and disability experts was established to review how we in PCI can best support families in challenging times, with a particular focus on pregnancy crisis, pregnancy loss and caring for a loved one with a disability from birth. The task group has identified a number of key areas to help deliver an informed, compassionate and holistic process of pastoral engagement.

First, we see an acute need for greater openness within congregations to talk about

the pain and suffering that lives quietly in our pews. Often the lived experience is one of a lack of awareness, knowledge and understanding which can lead to insensitivity or even a judgmental attitude, causing those who are most vulnerable to retreat from church and continue to live in silent pain and shame. We need to develop a better understanding of these particular struggles and difficulties and create a greater sensitivity of language as we engage and journey with those experiencing loss, crisis and trauma in pregnancy. In each of our congregations, our church families, there is the potential to provide support and care unparalleled in any other part of society.

Secondly, we understand the need for consistent, intentional pastoral training offered to all pastoral care givers.

Ministers, deaconesses, youth workers and others should be equipped to help provide care that is informed, aware and sensitively delivered in the context of a theological understanding of pain, suffering and human dignity.

Thirdly, we want to ensure that gaps in our pastoral care resources are adequately filled and organised in an easily accessible way, and where appropriate, signpost to some fantastic and worthy organisations who already support women and their families in these areas with experience and integrity.

Our overall desire is to enable the Church, in all her facets, to journey alongside families through their crisis and pain, pointing towards a place of joy and hope. Please continue to pray for us as we move into the next phase of our work and seek to provide a pathway for our Church on these issues.

Life lessons Rachel Jones Editor and author

I live in Chessington, in south-west London, but did most of my growing up in Lancashire (and some of my growing up in County Fermanagh). I’m an editor at The Good Book Company and a member of Chessington Evangelical Church.

I work as an editor, which mostly involves working alongside authors through every stage of the publishing process – from initial idea to print date – to help them make their book the best it can be for the audience it’s serving. I also have the privilege of doing some writing of my own.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I finished university.

When I was looking for jobs after graduating, I saw The Good Book Company were advertising for an editorial intern and though, “Huh, maybe I could do that”. When I got here, it turned out that the job was a great fit for all the things I had always enjoyed. I put it down to God’s providence!

I think it’s incredible the way that the Bible speaks to all of life’s experiences with vibrancy and depth and nuance. So, I want to help other people see that too. There isn’t one area of our lives that God’s not interested in.

When I was 22, I spent a couple of months on a mission trip to south Asia, and found it way harder than I expected. I felt very far from home. But I was very conscious of God walking with me through it. I memorised Psalm 139 on that trip and it has remained precious ever since.

I’m sure I’ve been shaped by my background in more ways than I can appreciate. Our Jones family traits are our sense of humour and a fairly laid-back approach to life in general.

I’m grateful that growing up, my parents emphasised the importance of loving the Lord Jesus and serving his people.

I get angry when I find that my housemate has put something that could be recycled in the rubbish bin. That’s not because I’m a particularly passionate eco-warrior – I just like things to be in the right place!

The older I get, the more I admire my parents.

They’ve spent years plugging away in ministry in a small town in England. There’s nothing glamorous or exciting about it in the world’s eyes. But their faithfulness is beautiful in God’s sight.

My favourite hymn is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, because the words and the tune are beautiful. I learned it while I was at university during a time of significant spiritual growth, so when I sing the line “Here by thy great help I come” I’m reminded of all the work that God has done in my life since then. I also love What a Friend We Have in Jesus. We had to memorise the words when I was a member of the Girls’ Friendly Society in County Fermanagh and still love it!

The last book I read was a novel called Room by Emma Donoghue. It was so gripping it kept me up at night!

Once on the way to school I was worried about getting in trouble about a piece of homework I’d forgotten to do. My sister advised me: “Don’t worry about anything until right before it’s about to happen.” It’s great advice in the right context! (And terrible advice in others…)

The best holiday I’ve had was in 2016. I spent a week in the Dordogne with my siblings and my aunt. We read books in the sun, drank coffee in picturesque towns, and watched a lot of the Olympics. It was bliss.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn has been accepting that sometimes I won’t get the things I want, but God will always be the one I need.

Each day I pray for lots of things and yet not enough! This morning I was reading in Isaiah 46 about how it is the Lord who bears us up (rather than the other way round), so I was rejoicing in that and asking for his help to remember it.

Wisdom and reverence Andrew Conway

With respect to all my fellow readers, I suspect I am not the only one of whom this is true. In this column throughout 2020 I hope to explore the theme of wisdom. God’s Word is clear that wisdom begins with a proper reverence for him ( Job 28:28; Proverbs 1:7).

On the night of Thursday 21 July 2016, the church was broken into and a fire started in the kitchen. Fortunately, the Fire Service was quickly on the scene, the fire was contained, and relatively little damage was done. After an intensive two days of deep cleaning, the church buildings were made ready for the start of a Scripture Union children’s mission, Newtownbreda CSSM, starting on the Monday. However, early on the following Sunday morning the church was attacked again, this time two fires were started, one in the church hall and the second in the sanctuary. The fire damage was significant and the smoke damage extensive.

There was a real sense of sadness as a group of church members gathered on the steps outside the church on the Sunday afternoon to pray. We wanted to pray for our church members but also for those who had perpetrated the attack.

As followers of Jesus Christ we have been forgiven and we wanted to have a forgiving attitude, even to those who had harmed our premises.

We were greatly strengthened and encouraged by the support and help of the surrounding community. The local Church of Ireland parish church changed the time of their Sunday morning service to allow us to use their church for worship for a few weeks. Then the local

The immediate reaction of members of the congregation was one of shock and anger. It was difficult to understand why someone would want to attack our church building which was used by all sections of our local community during

primary school allowed us the use of their buildings for the best part of a year.

We received help and encouragement from all sides of the community and local politicians. We were also determined that our work with children and young people would remain throughout this time, and so we continued to offer a broad range of youth and children’s programmes to our community. Throughout the next two years, the prayers of our members and our neighbours and supporters were important as we sought to carry on and as we looked for guidance from God about the next step.

Churches becoming targets Saintfield Road is not the only church to have suffered attacks like this – they are, unfortunately, becoming more common. In August 2019 Christian Action Research and Education (CARE) reported that almost 450 places of worship in Northern Ireland had been attacked in the previous three years. In November 2019 a further report from Countryside Alliance quoted police figures that indicated that since 2019 there have been 1,446 crimes involving

churches and places of worship. These include theft of lead, general theft, criminal damage and violence against church personnel.

The only police forces in the UK reporting higher numbers were Greater Manchester Police and the Metropolitan Police Service. Churches and places of worship should be safe places where young and old, families and singles, locals and others are welcomed, cared for and introduced to God. It seems in recent years they have become soft targets for vandalism, theft and even violence. Every church and place of worship faces the tension of wanting to make their building open and accessible, while at the same time being conscious of security and safety.

Reimagining and rebuilding And so the rebuilding process began.

Having got over the initial shock, we started thinking about the future and about what sort of church God wanted us to be. In conversation with architects and others we started to understand the importance of the actual space we occupied. Its openness and accessibility; its appearance and atmosphere, all have an impact on how comfortable people feel coming into the building and how at home they are when there. We therefore took the opportunity to completely redesign the interior of the sanctuary to make it more community orientated, to make an open, welcoming, flexible and contemporary space.

We turned the interior of the church around 180 degrees. One of the side effects of this was that everyone now came into the building through the same door, where previously two doors had been used. This helped us all in

feeling one congregation, one family. A stage, the full width of the church, was constructed on which the worship band, musical instruments, communion table and lectern could be placed, but again were easily movable depending on need. The heavy wooden chairs, many of which had been fire damaged anyway, were replaced with light, easily movable stackable chairs in three different colours. LED lighting was installed, which can be used in different ways, again depending on the need.

Initially, was everyone convinced that this was all a good idea? Probably not.

Did everyone get behind the project from the start? I think I can say that, yes, the vast majority of the congregation did get behind the plans and have supported it, not least financially.

God used the fires to act as a catalyst to help us to think about how best we could serve a world in need.

Rev Willis Cordner was commissioned to make new church furniture. He designed and constructed a new communion table, a lectern and baptismal font from the most beautiful Irish elm wood. He was thrilled a few months ago to conduct a service in Saintfield Road from the lectern he had made.

We had full insurance cover through the PCI Church Insurance Scheme and our insurance brokers, along with the claims management company, which we retained, were very supportive in helping us with the claim. The building work was completed, and the building reopened in May 2018, though with an additional cost of £300K over the insurance costs.

In the past year, as well as having Sunday worship, we

have had café church, Messy Church, a community fun day, musical events and in the spring of 2019 the local primary school used Saintfield Road Presbyterian Church buildings to put on several performances of The Lion King.

A catalyst When Joseph confronted his brothers who had sold him into slavery he said, “As far as I am concerned, God turned into good what was meant for evil” (Genesis 50:20). There is a real sense amongst the members of Saintfield Road Presbyterian Church that God has turned into good what others obviously intended for evil. We do not want to be defined by the arson attacks, but God used the fires to act as a catalyst to help us to think about how best we could serve a world in need. Following the fires, we launched our Vision 2020 which has three aspects, worship; sending; serving.

We strive to be a welcoming church where we can help people of all ages and backgrounds meet Jesus Christ through our worship, Bible teaching, friendship and that together we can grow both as individuals and as a church family. We hope that those living in and around the church building will feel welcome to come. We are committed to mission overseas as we partner with and support people working in Japan, India and Kenya. We want to serve our local community in whatever way we can.

As well as having a new church building, we also have a new minister, although that had nothing to do with the fires! At the start of September 2019 Rev Ben Walker was installed as minister of SRPC and we look forward to all that God is going to do in the years ahead.

A time to plant Pip Florit looks at the exciting ministry of church planting and highlights PCI’s upcoming conference, ‘A Time to Plant’.

A

cross Ireland, society is changing at a rapid rate. From demographics, to attitudes, to family structures, to morals, there has been, and continues to be, a shift.

Attitudes to faith have not escaped this shift. We live in an increasingly secular society where more people have less experience of church. Perceptions of church have altered, creating a difficulty in reaching out to those who have no first-hand experience of church. And so the divide between church and society, the sacred and the secular, Christianity and spirituality is getting wider. How can we bridge this divide?

The town of Balbriggan is about 20 miles north of Dublin, a popular home for commuters and migrants, but a place with little gospel witness. A couple of years ago, members of Donabate

Presbyterian Church, a church planted around 10 years ago, saw the need for outreach in Balbriggan and began to engage with the community. Over the past two years, they have started a home group, played football with locals and held an Alpha course in a local pub. Since January, they have been piloting a Sunday afternoon service and are excited to see where God will lead the community.

Perhaps this gives you a lot of questions: How do we plant churches?

What does the Bible say about church planting? How can the church reach out to people who have little knowledge of God? What is my part in church planting?

If you are asking any of these questions, PCI’s church planting conference is for you.

‘A Time to Plant’ will take place on Saturday 9 May at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk. From 10am to 4.30pm, there will be opportunities to hear from people who have been involved in church planting, both internationally and in Ireland. The conference will seek

to spread the vision of ‘new life, new people, new places’, stirring up passion for what God is doing in church plants throughout Ireland. It will be a chance to meet with others who have that passion, to hear about what is happening and to look to the future, prayerfully considering what could happen.

The conference will welcome Scotty Smith, author and founding pastor of Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as its keynote speaker.

Scotty has written and spoken extensively about church planting and is no stranger to Ireland. His current congregation, West End Community Church, has partnered with Liberty Church to do inner city ministry in Dublin. Scotty has previously spoken at the Keswick Convention in Portstewart and the Generation Church Planting conference in Edinburgh.

He will be speaking on the first three chapters of Ephesians, looking at the biblical rationale for planting churches and the vision for new life, new people and new places.

New life People are constantly searching for ways to make their lives better, for changes that will give them a life worth living. Diets, experiences, new clothes, new toys – it’s human nature to crave the new, the satisfying, the fulfilling.

But human nature also means that it’s never enough, so our society has become one that is habitually discontented and searching. In the searching, so often the places where people look for a fulfilled life are places that drive them deeper into its absence.

The evidence of this search is all around us. How different would Ireland look if people heard and understood that God offers mercy, love, grace and life? This is the message that God has entrusted his church with – the message of new life full of God and fulfilled in him. It is a message with the potential to breathe new life into spiritually dead places.

New people In our changing Ireland, increasing in multi-culturalism and secularism, more people than ever are disconnected from the church and have never heard this gospel of salvation. More people than ever do not know the truth that God loved them so much that he sent his Son to die for them. When we reach out, we’re no longer reaching out to ‘first-generation unchurched’, we’re reaching out to people who have minimal knowledge of God, and often minimal interest in him.

It is a message with the potential to breathe new life into spiritually dead places.

We’re not primarily called to do this reaching out in an isolated situation, but as the church. Carnmoney Presbyterian Church has recently started a pop-up church along with other community activities in Ballyduff, a loyalist housing estate, as a means to connect with people with no previous church association.

Members are going to where the people are at, rather than expecting the people to come to them.

New places It goes without saying that new life and new people can happen in places where established churches have been for many years, but it also has to happen in new places, places where there is no other witness.

One of the advantages of a church plant is that it’s often not tied to a building – it can start where the people are and where it is needed. And often that isn’t in a stone building with a steeple. It could be a coffee shop, a school, a shopping centre, or a cinema.

What if ‘places’ doesn’t just mean geographical places, but spiritual, emotional, traditional, cultural places?

In Lurgan, members of a large church recognised that they were not reaching their immediate neighbours. As a result, a

team from the church has been regularly picking up litter in the area for the past year. This act of service has helped to build relationships with a number of local households and the church plans to run a course exploring faith in a neutral local school.

A time to plant We need new expressions of church to introduce new people in new places to new life in Christ. Maybe you’ve long since realised that, but maybe you don’t know what to do with that realisation or what your part in it is. Attending the conference may be the perfect starting point to give you an opportunity to explore that.

As well as hearing from Scotty in the main sessions, there will be three breakout sessions, which will allow you to hear more stories of what God is doing around Ireland. These sessions will be opportunities to dig deeper into your own context, determining where you’re at, where you’re going and how you might get there.

This is a conference for anyone with an inkling of interest in church planting, no matter where you are on that journey.

Artificial Intelligence

T

here is a lot of talk around these days about artificial intelligence (AI). Much of the time, we are so used to the technology that we barely think of it in terms of AI, such as when we use a cash machine.

At the other end of the scale, serious commentators voice their fears that we are on course to create machines more powerful than ourselves, autonomously capable of producing programmes. In between these extremes, there are a number of areas where every informed observer must be vigilant. I shall give five examples.

The first is in the area of employment. Will Robots Take Your Job? is the title of a recent book by Nigel M. de S. Cameron which soberly expresses a widespread fear that this will be the case.

It is not simply what used to be called ‘blue-collar’ jobs but also ‘white-collar’ jobs that are at risk. If we compare the number of employees in the biggest companies on the market, say, three decades ago, with those in the big high-tech companies of today, there are dramatically fewer now. Where firms no longer establish factories in or outsource jobs to countries where labour is cheaper, it is sometimes because the labour force is being cut and machine intelligence is doing the job more efficiently.

The second is in healthcare. Where one doctor used to consult another, she or he may now use machine intelligence to process, rapidly and statistically, data which will give guidance on diagnosis or treatment. Some have expressed preference for the machine over the doctor actually telling you that you have cancer. Provision of care for the elderly is a critical problem all over the world.

Why not use robots? They can attend with strength and efficiency to patient needs, follow instructions and provide a level of companionship. Japan apparently leads the way in this respect and the progress of this social experiment should be monitored by us all.

‘Companionship’ takes us to the third area. Children in school, bullied, isolated or feeling inadequate, met at the school gate by a parent or carer immersed in his or her phone and making no eye contact with the child, can find consolation in

Sherry Turkle, of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), has written about this in a book called Alone Together, which soberingly documents what is going on in this respect. Adults are also using humanoid robots as sexual companions, willing and compliant.

Fourthly, there is the question of surveillance.

I make no apology for mentioning another book here which had a huge impact when it was published last year, Shoshana Zuboff ’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.

On reading it, we may consider never using Google or Facebook again. It is now and has been for some time very common to hear of people discussing holidays over their mobiles or recipes in their kitchens to find an advertisement turning up on their phones that meets the need. That is peanuts compared to some of the data-collecting that is going on, enabled by artificial intelligence.

Zuboff ’s thorough research not only into surveillance but its connection in modern technological form in the West with capitalism gives us a most important window onto contemporary society.

The fifth might be regarded as the most important area of all: the military.

Investment and development in AI has long been heavy on the part of and driven by the armed forces. This is not only a matter of the technology of missile development. The question of sentient AI has long been raised in science fiction and human enhancement is widely discussed in terms of how (to put it in popular terms) humans and machines can in some way be merged. In a world

where powerful states are perpetually geared for war, it is obvious that this will be of interest. It is not hard to understand why the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, reflecting on the times and tides of worldly reality, said that war was ‘the father and king of all’.

The above are just examples. There are other areas – for example, AI and the arts – which could be explored.

Can we say anything about underlying trends or assumptions? It seems that at least two things come together in the AI revolution. One is technological development. The other is changing ideas of what it is to be human. What is important is to try to grasp the way in which the former is at the service of and furthers the latter.

In the latter part of the 20th century, a number of technologies began to converge so that advances in the fields of information technology, genetic engineering and nanotechnology could proceed, taking cognisance of each other. Charles Darwin’s thought has had a transformative effect on the way people think about human nature. Can there be a fixed ‘human nature’? If humans are the product of evolutionary processes, why should human development stop there?

Why not use technology not only to devise impersonal machines but also to enhance human beings? Advances in neuroscience increasingly teach us how the brain works and technology can modify our behaviour in the light of new knowledge. Speaking very generally, AI draws the human brain and machine behaviour into as close a connection as is possible. Radical possibilities are discussed, including the question of robotic consciousness.

Of course, many people think that it is nonsense to consider such a possibility.

Furthermore, a great number of computer scientists involved in AI are not interested in questions of robotic personhood. However, these questions are not simply for people who indulge in weird or entertaining sci-fi imaginations.

We must judge all technologies by their tendencies in this respect. Do they tend to edge God out of the picture so that we settle for and are dependent on that which is not God? Technological development proceeds at a giddying pace and the lives of many westerners are lived in a state of permanent, breathless distraction. We badly need time in order to ponder and reflect, to read and to pray. The body needs stillness as well as safety; the eyes need to roam slowly and not to be glued to that which flickers and moves in front of them. One commentator observed that it is not so much the increase in AI that troubles him; it is the accompanying decrease in the intelligence of biological humans. We can only respond to the challenges of AI in the churches if individuals lever themselves out of their isolation so that collectively, as the body of Christ, we help each other think through these things. It is yet one more thing to think about, I know, but better to take it on than to be overtaken by it.

A beautiful life Sarah Harding takes a look at the new movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, starring Tom Hanks, which tells the story of Fred Rogers.

T

om Hanks’ latest film brings to life a story about the American children’s television personality, Fred Rogers. From 1968 to 2001, Rogers entertained millions of American children on his show Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood. He encouraged children to talk about their feelings and proved that this could be achieved without gimmicks or sophistication. Rogers used puppets whose mouths didn’t move and sang self-written songs, to let children know they were special. Often, he would simply talk down the barrel of the lens in a slow and purposeful way to engage with his audience – children over three decades were captivated.

Whilst Irish audiences might not be familiar with Rogers, and therefore not fully appreciate the film, it is the character of the real Fred Rogers that certainly has something to teach us all.

He was an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, and although he never talked explicitly about God on his show, his life of faith resonated so strongly in who he was and what he said

The story The film is based on a true story and is set in 1998 when Esquire journalist, Lloyd Vogel, is tasked with interviewing Fred Rogers for a short piece on American heroes. Lloyd is an investigative journalist who is scathing of the assignment and, not believing that Rogers could be that good and kind in real life, sets about trying to write an exposé piece that will uncover the truth.

Lloyd does discover the real Mr Rogers, but he finds out that he is exactly the same person as the one on screen, and a lasting friendship ensues. Fred’s agent tells Lloyd, “He loves people like you…”, clarifying, “broken ones”. Lloyd is a damaged character, having had a difficult

background and ongoing issues with his father. Rogers completely catches Lloyd unawares by sincerely caring, turning most questions directed at him back to the journalist. The plot explores many themes, like forgiveness, kindness and mental health; it’s the sort of film that you will be thinking about long after it is over.

Space for silence and listening Although Tom Hanks puts in a stellar performance as Mr Rogers, it is the real footage of Fred, available on YouTube, that I found particularly compelling.

In many ways Rogers was ahead of his time. Long before the invention of the internet, social media and smartphones, which have undoubtedly contributed to our distracted, hurried and informationoverloaded society; Rogers recognised the importance of space for silence and listening. To watch this unfold on screen is actually quite jarring, simply because it appears so alien, not only to how other films are shot, but also to real life.

Love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.

He does not hurry his introduction, but takes time to let Lloyd know that he is welcome, his visit has been keenly anticipated and he is looking forward to spending time talking to him.

Lloyd is taken aback by such sincerity and kindness, as well as the level of space and focus that Fred has bestowed on him, a stranger. In real life, the character of Lloyd Vogel is based on the journalist Tom Junod (his article is still available to view on Esquire’s website and is well worth a read). Tom’s friendship with Fred lasted until Rogers’ death five years later, but Tom testifies to his persistent effort to remain interested in Tom’s life, sending him over 70 (lengthy!) emails in that time.

Rogers’ comments on the need for silence resonate even more powerfully today, “I’m very concerned that our society is much more interested in information than wonder; in noise rather than silence… how do we encourage reflection?”

He was passionate about creating space for other people and knew the value this had on others, “If we can be present to the moment, to the person that we happen to be with…that’s what’s important.”

Above all he identified the need for children to talk about their feelings, and so on the show he didn’t shy away from raising big issues like divorce, death, bullying, anger and sadness. All of this was done in a slow, deliberate manner, almost as though Rogers had an audience of one and was engaging through the camera solely with that one child. He would often end his shows by saying, “There’s no one in the whole world like you, and I like you, just the way you are.”

One of the most poignant moments of the film is when Lloyd Vogel’s family are at his father’s bedside, knowing that he doesn’t have long to live. Fred, who has come to visit, senses the awkwardness and says, “You know, death is something many of us are uncomfortable speaking about. But to die is to be human.

And anything human is mentionable.

The actress playing her is able to get this across, insisting that Fred worked hard at developing a love for others, namely by reading Scripture, praying for people by name and writing letters.

It is humbling to be reminded that Fred Rogers didn’t have a superhero power to show kindness and love to others – he was intentional in his behaviour because he was disciplined to spend time and effort developing his character. He had an attitude of gratitude for his life, despite enduring some difficult obstacles of isolation and bullying growing up. In another moving scene, when Fred takes Lloyd out to a restaurant, he suggests they take a minute to stop, think and give thanks for all the people who have shaped their lives, people who have “loved you into being”.

The restaurant goes quiet and everyone pauses for a whole minute – the power of this silence on screen is profound.

The life of Fred Rogers should be inspirational to us all, particularly as people of faith. His Christian character was so marked, so utterly different, that it stood out, even peculiarly, to everyone.

Perhaps our challenge is to ponder the following words by Rogers and consider what other people see when they look at us: “It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing what we do is more important than what we are when of course the opposite is true. What we are ultimately determines what we do.”

here has been a lot of attention in the media recently on young children because of the focus the Duchess of Cambridge is putting on early childhood.

Her Royal Highness states that the first few years of childhood are more pivotal for development, future health and happiness, than any other single moment of our lifetime. She believes that we can better provide solid social and emotional platforms for children to make them healthier and more resilient later in life. Many of society’s greatest social and health challenges, and the intergenerational cycle of disadvantage, could be mitigated or entirely avoided by providing the right support for children in the earliest years of life.

stimulation and providing places for them to learn and grow, and to support families through these early stages is vital.

But I also think that there is more that children need than simply solid social and emotional platforms, important as these are. Young children and their families also need to know about Jesus and what he has to offer them in terms of a relationship with the Saviour.

This is something that many of our congregations already do week on week.

I am carrying out a piece of research

Of the congregations I have so far looked at (covering 16 out of 19 presbyteries) well over 50% have a weekly group in the church and some of those who do not, support community groups in their locality instead. Singing songs of praise

in Belfast Sarah Harding chats to Aled Jones and Claire McCollum during their visit to Assembly Buildings to record two Songs of Praise episodes.

A

ssembly Buildings recently played host to the popular BBC One show Songs of Praise. Over the Christmas period, two episodes recorded in PCI’s headquarters were on our screens, The Big Sing Christmas, presented by Aled Jones and The Big Sing Belfast, presented by Belfast’s own Claire McCollum.

Both episodes boasted an impressive list of guests, including The Priests, Dana, G4 and Katherine Jenkins. The roof was lifted off Assembly Buildings during the collective singing with composer and conductor Ken Burton leading the congregation in hymns such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Be Thou My Vision and In Christ Alone.

I caught up with Claire and Aled ahead of their night of recording. Aled has been presenting the show since 2000 and Claire has been on board since 2014.

Both love working on the programme – Aled describes the team as “family” and Claire agrees: “They’re so invested in the programme because you have to be…it has to be absolutely right for the audience.”

Songs of Praise has really stood the test the time; in fact, it is one of the longest running series of its genre on television anywhere in the world, having first been broadcast in an early evening slot in

…a lot of people who watch Songs of Praise don’t go to church or can’t go to church and this is their one connection with that community.

October 1961. The series holds nostalgic memories for many people who have grown up with it over the years. “Baths!” quips Aled. “Everyone talks to me about baths – it was 6pm – bath time!”

Both Claire and Aled are passionate about the importance of religious broadcasting. Aled says, “I think it’s vital because a lot of people who watch Songs of Praise don’t go to church or can’t go to church and this is their one connection with that community. Every Sunday they sit down to watch something that brings them closer to like-minded people.

And the fact is, we’re still a Christian country… so it’s important that that aspect of life is portrayed on TV.” The show has been helpful for Claire’s own family in that regard, “My dad doesn’t get out much – he has Parkinson’s… and mum doesn’t get out to church because she has to be with dad, so it’s lovely they can both watch it.”

Strengthening faith Claire grew up in the Church of Ireland tradition and Aled in the Anglican Church. Both agree that working on

Songs of Praise has brought them closer to God. “It’s definitely strengthened my faith, without a doubt,” says Aled. “To meet people from different walks of life who have had something extraordinary happen to them and also their connection with their faith and with God – it can only rub off on you really.”

When Claire was first offered a presenting role, she didn’t jump at it immediately. “I thought long and hard about it because it is a responsibility. But I would definitely say it’s strengthened my faith – just listening to people’s stories can only inspire you in your own faith journey.”

One standout moment for Claire was not long after she started with the programme. “I very quickly went as far as Kenya for Father’s Day, which was fabulous. We took a Presbyterian missionary from Donegal, who was a potato farmer. We took him back to Kenya to revisit the people whose lives he had transformed by giving them simple potato planting techniques. That really spoke to me about what it is to do God’s work in the world.”

Aled recalls a particularly moving interview for Holocaust Memorial Day, “It was with a Welsh lady whose husband was a chaplain in Belsen and had buried 5,000 people in one day. The lady was only meant to answer one or two questions, but we ended up recording about a quarter of an hour… it’s an incredible warmth you get from meeting incredible people.”

Hymns are obviously an important part of the show and both presenters are big fans of traditional hymns. “There’s nothing like a traditional hymn,” says Claire. “I think it just centres you and takes the focus away from what’s going on in the world… to hear a hymn, no matter where you’re at with your faith, is beautiful.”

“Even now a certain hymn might remind me of sitting cross-legged on a really uncomfortable hard floor in Llandegfan Primary School in north Wales, with the smell of my lunch coming through the shutters as the cooks were preparing it…

I think the traditional hymns have stood the test of time, so they should be loved.”

Careers Claire’s career has seen her work on a number of different programmes on TV and radio and her time as a sports presenter gave her the chance to meet some big stars. When George Best opened a non-alcoholic bar with wife Alex in Kilkeel, Claire went to interview him. “He was very ill at the time, but he was just so humble and lovely – a gentle soul.” Then when Northern Ireland played England at Windsor Park and beat them 1-0, Claire also met David Beckham. “He was very pleasant and took the time to go up and down the press. He was the only one who came out after the defeat.”

Aled’s career began very young, when aged 15, he topped the charts with a cover version of Walking in the Air from the animated film The Snowman. Yet he insists he didn’t feel too much pressure from the fame at that stage, “No one had done it before, so none of us knew what we were doing. It was brilliant…I remember being a young kid and signing a contract with Richard Branson on his boat in Regent’s Park and him saying, ‘I haven’t got a clue how to sell your music

because we’ve never done classical, so we’re just going to sell it like we do Phil Collins.’”

In 2004 Aled took part in Strictly Come Dancing. He laughs, “Luckily I did the second series when the men were rubbish.

The minute I saw Quentin Wilson with an L plate on his back struggling with actually walking, I thought, ‘I’ve got one week anyway!’ It was an amazing experience, but I still get sweaty palms thinking about it.

“The first week I was dressed head to toe in black lycra, dancing to Ricky Martin’s She Bangs. I honestly thought that my Songs of Praise days were over!

I watch it now and I’m in awe of them – even from the first week, the men are brilliant.”

Aled has recently released a very successful second album with friend, Russell Watson, called Back in Harmony and he is also set to embark on a cathedral tour, covering 26 cathedrals in the UK. He enjoys singing in the church setting for the acoustics and ambience.

“Last time we did a cathedral tour was about four years ago… we started in daylight and as it gradually went darker, you’d see the back window lit up and just think, ‘Wow!’” Both Claire and Aled don’t always get to be part of the congregational singing on Songs of Praise, as they are often filming on location, and aren’t at the church venue, so they really enjoy it when they can be part of that experience.

“Tonight will be amazing!” says Aled.

“Yes, it’ll be lovely,” agrees Claire.

“Since it’s over here, I’ll probably see so many people I know. We’re all related over here!”

Aled laughs, “It’s a bit like that in north Wales too.”

American Christian pop artist, Jeremy Camp is a prolific songwriter and this, his 12th studio album, is full of new tracks in his evolving pop style. This crossover style to a more secular sound is becoming more common amongst Christian artists and Camp seems to have planted himself firmly in this genre. This is an enjoyable album, easy to have on in the background, with some good lyrics to (ear)worm their way in to your head.

Jeremy Camp’s own personal story of loss lends an authenticity to his writing and has highly influenced it over the last 20 years. This album continues that trajectory, with tracks like Still Alive, Dead Man Walking and Keep Me in the Moment which point to how God’s hand has been on Camp throughout his life to this point.

If you have enjoyed Jeremy Camp’s music in the past, then this album will appeal to you and if you’ve never heard of him then you’ll probably enjoy it too! My favourite track is Keep Me in the Moment which encourages us to ask for God’s help to keep our eyes on him and be aware of what God is giving us to do; “Lord, keep me in the moment/help me live with my eyes wide open ‘cause I don’t want to miss what you have for me... show me what matters/throw away what I’m chasing after...” This feels like a pertinent perspective for this generation and Camp speaks into the ‘Insta’ era with gospel truth.

Avoiding the sins of ‘comfortable’ Christianity is the premise behind David Martin’s book Different. He cites materialism, careerism and nationalism as among the ‘respectable’ sins Christians should be tackling, adding that followers of Christ should be seen as people with an extra dimension to their lives, rather than just conforming to what the world wants.

At just 75 pages long, this is admittedly a short book. It starts well, dealing with the topic of materialism, which he describes as “one of the most dangerous, even fatal sicknesses that is currently plaguing the church in my own part of the world: Northern Ireland.” Living in a part of the world where there is so much choice, Martin’s points on this particular sin are relevant and insightful.

The author’s story of his first summer in an affluent parish will also resonate with many, when numbers at church shrunk as people “hitched their newly acquired, super-deluxe, solar-powered, extendable, convertible caravan to their superbly shining, newly valeted SUV” and took July and August off from churchgoing.

Each chapter deals with a different sin and while Martin makes many valid points, I found some parts of the book less helpful, and sometimes rushed. Ironically Different is not different in terms of the points it makes, but Martin acknowledges this, and in his conclusion says, “My intention in writing this short book was not to say anything new but to practice Moses’ ministry of simply repeating what the Bible says.”

When I first read the title of this book, my instant thought was, “Oh no, not another book on faith for youth workers!” Because let’s face it, there are already loads of them, and at times some of them are not really helpful.

However, I was pleasantly surprised as I started to read the first chapter. As it turns out, this book is actually helpful, and it’s not only for youth workers. As I continued to read this book, I noticed that there was a pattern – it began by looking at some basic principles; principles that can be used and applied by anyone, not just youth workers. Much of the content is focused on the importance of actually reading the Bible, and uses basic and simple examples to help illustrate the points that are made.

The author, Bob Wallington, has clearly done his homework in putting this book together, with two very helpful strands: firstly, noting where youth workers can improve their own Bible study time with God; and secondly, noting where this is also true for every other believer.

In my opinion, regardless of whether you have been a Christian for little over a year or for decades, this book will serve as a fantastic reminder of how good our God is. The book is easy to read and tailored to all people. The lessons are easy to understand, and you will find yourself encouraged to apply everything you learn.

I loved this book; it was inviting, insightful and inspiring. The author relates to the reader in a personable and funny way – she shares stories of her own experiences and gives advice on things that young girls need and may not feel comfortable asking about.

She explains things that we wrestle with as we walk the road to spiritual maturity, using personal experience

This album may not be particularly groundbreaking, but it is very pleasant, easy to listen to and musically dense, with Selah’s signature harmonising and orchestral accompaniment.

At the end of each chapter, the author has included deconstruction and reconstruction exercises to challenge you to question what the world is teaching you about who you should be and to ask who God says you are.

Rachel writes in a conversational style and is light-hearted and respectful in the way she speaks about sensitive topics; she also shares about her life and her own trials alongside the advice she offers. It is a pleasant and informative read and I think every woman and girl should read this book. I have already recommended it to several of my female friends and family.

LIFE IN PCI Awards for Presbyterian church buildings Three Presbyterian congregations have received awards for their work in making their buildings more accessible for people with disabilities.

Main Street Presbyterian Church, Garvagh in Co Londonderry, Fisherwick Presbyterian in Belfast and Lecumpher Presbyterian in Desertmartin all received recognition at the latest Prestige Access Awards ceremony held by the William Keown Trust.

Costing around £900,000, Lecumpher’s new church hall complex features disabled parking, a lift which allows disabled access to upstairs rooms and a loop hearing system throughout the building.

Fisherwick’s most recent renovation works to halls and offices features wide corridors, ramped wheelchair access to a new welcome area entrance and a hearing enhancement system.

Having demolished the damp church building, Main Street, Garvagh built a new sloping sanctuary which has four designated wheelchair spaces and a ramp leading to the platform, lectern, choir area, and praise band location. A loop hearing system is also in place.

The William Keown Trust is committed to working for the removal of physical barriers which may limit people with disabilities from participating fully in the life of their community.

A special service to mark the 60th anniversary of Rev Ken McConnell’s ordination to the Christian ministry took place in Greenbank Presbyterian Church recently. The praise was led by First Derry church choir accompanied by organist and musical director David McGuicken.

Immediately following evening worship, the large congregation gathered in the hall for speeches and supper, chaired by vacancy convener Dr David Latimer. Presbytery clerk Rev Mark Russell, Rev Jimmy Gray and Rev Andrew Watson were all in attendance. Gifts, on behalf of Greenbank and Moville congregations, were presented to Mr McConnell and Yvonne McConnell.

O

ne of my earliest memories, fuzzy and faint, is of not flat. They are not ‘one size fits all’. They are certainly not going to the cinema with my dad and brother to predictable. This is why our stories are so important and why we see Pinocchio. It persists in my memory because it is need to keep sharing them: how we came to faith (or how faith the only time I remember being in the cinema with came to us); what seasons we have lived through in our faith; my dad. By contrast, when I was a parent, I went to the cinema what insights we have gained or what struggles we have had regularly with my children.
