San Clemente Girls Cross Country TRY OUT INFORMATION If you are interesting in running X-Country, please email me in the summer so that you can get information about summer practices. It is very important that during the summer, you are working out and getting into shape for the season. Our season is short; practices begin a few days before school starts and is over by the 1st week of November. This allows athletes to compete in winter sports such as basketball, water polo, and soccer.
http://sctritonscience.com/Proodian2/?page_id=14 There will be only be two tryout dates throughout the summer: June 28th & July 26th at SCHS Track 8:30am
You may tryout at one or both of these times. The 3 mile course map can be found on the website. All runners who can finish the course in under 25 minutes and 30 seconds will make the team. Slower girls may make the team based on their time and how many other girls tryout. You will receive a grade for you tryout time. Those under 25:30 will have at least a B. Faster runners will receive better grades for their tryout. Throughout the summer, organized practices will consist of meeting in and around San Clemente for group runs. If you are unable to make these runs, you need to be running on your own to be in shape enough to make the tryout time. Generally, most girls who run throughout the summer make the tryout time. Check the website for these practice dates and time or email the coach. Most of these runs take place in the mornings at North Beach where we run the beach trail.

Cross Country races are three miles long. This season we will be participating in league meets against San Juan Hills, El Toro, Aliso Niguel, and Laguna Hills as well as in a few multi-school Invitationals. Cross Country scoring depends on the order of finishing in each race. The top five finishers of a race are its scorers. These top five places are added up and the lowest combined score wins. Our season begins in early September and ends towards the beginning of November. During this time we will be practicing every weekday except for during our meets. Though everybody runs individually in meets, we collectively run as a team. Every athlete is important to the overall atmosphere of the team. All team members should provide support and instill confidence in others on the team. Practicing good sportsmanship and encouraging everyone to succeed is essential for every athlete to perform at their highest level. By maintaining high expectations, each athlete can perform to her highest capabilities. It is most important to have fun while experiencing competition and camaraderie in a high school sport. Memories and lessons learned often may exceed those learned in the classroom. Prepare mentally and physically, compete seriously, and have fun. However, if you are thinking of joining the team to just hang out and have fun, realize and be prepared to run at least 5 miles everyday during practices. If you are not prepared to do this, then think about joining another sport. Cross Country runners are determined athletes who try their hardest and give 100% in practices and meets.
Participation A. All athletes participate who are cleared and not in violation of any team or school rules. All athletes must be cleared BEFORE trying out in the summer. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. You have all summer to get your physical and insurance forms completed. B. Towards the end of the summer, the girls will meet at school to run our home course for time. You will have several tries to run our 3-mile course in under 25 minutes 30 seconds. This can be challenging, as it is not the same as just running 3 miles around a track. Our course encompasses several hills up above the football visitor’s bleachers. It is expected that you will be training throughout the summer so that you can accomplish this time. See the course map on our website. C. Practice times during the season will be during 6th period and run after school until about 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, from 3pm to 5pm. On Thursdays, we will practice from 1pm to 3:30 pm during our block period. Practices usually last no longer than two hours. DO NOT schedule appointments during practices.
Grading Cross Country meets 6th Period. It counts as one semester of PE credit towards graduation. You will be graded during the season, and after the season is over until the next grading period begins in January. During the season, grading is based on attendance, participation and effort. If you are present at all practices and meets, you will receive an A. If you miss more than one scheduled meet, your grade will drop. You are expected to attend all scheduled meets whether or not you are injured so that you can cheer on our team. A schedule of all meets will be available early in August so that you can schedule other things around Cross Country. We do meet on several Saturdays during the season. If you have a conflict, are ill, or injured for a meet, your coaches need to know BEFORE the meet or else you grade will be affected. All injuries need to be supported by a doctor’s note that states exactly what is wrong with the runner and how long she should stay away from practicing. If you are injured and unable to run for the rest of the season, you may want to drop the class and go into another PE class.
