WELCOME Welcome to the 3rd issue of the Myelec Electrical Opportunities magazine, October - January.

This issue leads us out of a cold long winter and into four of the best months of the year. We have again been helping our customers focus on “Powering more Opportunities”. As the cost of power continues to rise.

Myelec’s offering of energy efficient solutions will help our customers to provide a better offer to their clients.

In this issue we have new technology offerings from our partners along with some products to help keep cool. Also featured is a brief excerpt from the latest

wiring rules, our Canningvale Branch revamp with Tom and his team and Myelec and masters football. Over the last three months we held promotions with NHP “Drone Promo” where 6 DJI Spark Drones were won and Gerard Lighting “Chase the Ace” where customers won a share of 60 cartons of beer. We had our Annual Contractors Golf/ AFL trip to Bali, Schneider Training in Adelaide and “Industry Chat” luncheons. We hope you enjoy this edition and look forward to seeing

ARE YOU WIRED IN PREPARATION FOR THE UPDATED STANDARDS? With the much anticipated release of the new wiring rules AS/NZS 3000 on June 26 2018, it is critical that installations are protected and comply with the updated standards.

In residential installations, all circuits will now be required to be protected by 30mA Residual Current Devices (RCD), this now includes hard wired devices such as hot water systems, ovens and air conditioning systems.

NHP have you covered with a complete range of Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCBO) and RCD devices to suit these needs with the NHP MOD6 range offering: • 6kA fault level • 6A to 40A current ratings RCBOs • 40A to 63A current ratings RCCBs • 10mA & 30mA sensitives • 1P, 2P and 3P&N • Switched neutral and un-switched neutral options.

Not only have requirements for residential installations changed but there are also changes for non-residential installations.

Formerly, socket outlets and lighting circuits up to 20A required RCD protection, however this has now increased up to and including 32A. All fixed wiring equipment up to and including 32A should now have a 30mA RCD fitted.

To ensure these requirements are met, NHP have complete range of RCBO and RCD devices with the NHP DIN-T offering: • 6kA and 10kA fault levels • 6A to 40A current ratings RCBOs • 40A to 125A current ratings RCCBs • 10mA, 30mA, 100mA & 300mA sensitives • 1P, 2P, 3P and 3P&N • Switched neutral and un-switched neutral options.

For medical installations or medical equipment in the home, NHP have RCDs meeting the required Australian Standard AS/NZS 3003. These solutions are with 10mA devices with

switched neutral in 1P width devices, saving half the space of a typical 10mA RCD. Higher risk applications such as outdoor equipment, kindergartens, or bathrooms, NHP have a 10mA range of devices to offer that extra level of protection.

When choosing to have upstream RCD protection it is important that special selective RCDs are used. Selective RCDs prevent the upstream RCD accidentally operating which would normally cut power to many circuits instead of the intended individual circuit. NHP also offer these selective type RCDs, Type S. These changes are improving safety at home and at work so why wait for them to be enforced and make the first step to a safer environment now with NHP.

MYINFORMATION The new wiring rules came out on the 27th of June this year and will be mandatory from the 27th of December 2018. We briefly describe below some rules that might affect you, but please consult your AS/NZs Wiring Rules 3000:2018 for further information.

1. Requirements for alteration and repair of electrical installations (Clause 1.9.3) Further clarifications of what constitutes alterations and repairs have been provided in Clause 1.9.3 to aid electricians in understanding the distinction between the two and their associated requirements: Alterations: Alterations to electrical installations shall not cause any portion of the original electrical installation, or connected electrical equipment, to: (a) carry excessive currents or sustain excessive voltages; or (b) be used in any manner that is not in accordance with AS/ NZS 3000:2018.

Repairs: Repairs to existing electrical installations or their parts may be performed using methods, fixtures and fittings that were acceptable when that part of the electrical installation was originally installed or with methods, fixtures and fittings currently available as direct replacement, provided that the methods satisfy the fundamental safety principles of this Standard.

2. Clarification of mandatory RCD requirements for protected circuits, alterations and repairs (Clause 2.6.3) • Requirement for installation of RCDs in all final sub circuits in domestic and residential installations: RCDs with a maximum rated residual current of 30 mA are now required for all final sub circuits in domestic and residential installations, with the exception of carrying out exempt repair work.

• Requirement for installation of RCDs in commercial and industrial installations: RCDs with a minimum residual current of 30 mA are now required for final sub circuits, rated 32 A or less, that are supplying socket-outlets, lighting, direct-connected hand-held equipment, and direct-connected equipment that presents increased risk of electric shock. These restrictions do not apply to repairs undertaken in accordance with this Clause (see below).

Additional exemptions from this requirement includes cases where disconnection by an RCD could cause a danger greater than earth leakage current, or when an equipment has low risk of electric shock and installation of RCD can adversely affect the performance of the installation.

• Requirement for installation of RCDs with alterations to installations or replacement of switchboards: RCD requirements are applicable where switchboards are altered or replaced.

In an alteration, RCDs are required for final sub circuits. RCDs are also required to protect socket-outlets added to an existing circuit, in accordance with the requirements for new sub circuits, in the part of the installation in which they are located. Where socket-outlets are added to an existing circuit and RCD protection is required, the RCD protection only needs to be fitted at the origin of the additional wiring. Where all circuit protection on a switchboard is replaced, additional protection by RCDs are required for the final sub circuits supplied by that board.

• Repairs exemption: Where a single item of electrical equipment (e.g. a socket-outlet or light) which is not RCD-protected is replaced with an equivalent item in the same location, an RCD can be installed on the affected sub circuit, but is not mandatory.
