Unmissable highlights Cable Beach

Claimed to be one of the most stunning beaches in the world with 22 kilometres of pristine white sand, pindan cliffs and clear turquoise water, Cable Beach is a safe swimming beach with a variety of water sport activities including parasailing and surfcats. For a unique experience, join the sunset camel rides that operate daily along the beach. Due to the possible presence of box jellyfish and stingers in tropical waters during November to April, precautions should be taken when taking a dip. It's a great location to enjoy a beautiful Broome sunset. North of the vehicle access ramp is a declared nude beach.

Chinatown

A delightful reminder of the early multi-cultural mix of people in Broome. Take a wander through the original commercial centre of Broome, which was once a bustling hub of pearl sheds, billiard saloons, entertainment houses and Chinese eateries. Chinatown is now home to some of the world's finest pearl showrooms, along with a variety of retail outlets. Sidewalk cafes add a splash of colour to the pavements.

Dutch Flying Boat Wrecks

Located 1km offshore from Town Beach the Dutch Flying Boat wrecks are visible, remaining as evidence of the Japanese air raid on Broome during WWII. On March 3, 1942, at 9.30am a force of 10 Japanese aircraft destroyed a flotilla of 16 large flying boats on the water and seven aircraft on the airstrip. The tragedy was that many of the flying boats were carrying women and children. The death toll is still uncertain, but probably exceeded 100, for many of the bodies were never recovered. The mud of Roebuck Bay has done a very good job of preserving the aircraft. At extremely low tides, the plane wrecks are visible to those who wish to walk the kilometre 6

across the Roebuck Bay mud flats from Town Beach. The Catalina Boat Wrecks are only visible at tides of less than 0.86m; it is recommended you allow an hour to walk to out to the wrecks, and an hour to return to shore. Enclosed shoes are also recommended.

Dinosaur Footprints

Dinosaur footprints over 120 million years old can be seen at Gantheaume Point at very low tide. As the reef area is very fragile, care must be taken when exploring this area. For the benefit of visitors, a plaster cast of the tracks has been embedded at the top of the cliff. Footprints around Broome have identified the following species; stegosaur , sauropod, wintonopus, theropod and megolosauropus broomensis. Footprints can be viewed at Gantheaume Point at tides below 2.16m. As the rocks can be slippery and steep, a high level of mobility and sturdy shoes are required. It is not recommended to attempt to find the footprints once it is dark.

The Broome Bird Observatory is perfectly placed to keep track of visiting birds from all over the world, and you can view them too at the famous Shadehouse. By NIGEL JACKETT.

oebuck Bay and its vast numbers of migratory shorebirds were discovered by researchers in 1981. Annual expeditions by the Australasian Wader Study Group were then launched in order to learn more about these wonderful birds. Through most of the 1980s, these expeditions involved camping along the foredunes in testing conditions, as no facilities were available along Roebuck Bay’s northern shores.

In 1988, the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (now BirdLife Australia) after extensive consultation with the Department of Conservation and Land Management, established the Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) close to Crab

Creek, providing a much needed facility for researchers in Roebuck Bay. It is perfectly situated, near the boundary of Roebuck Plains, Roebuck Bay and the Crab Creek mangroves. The BBO has a quiet, tropical bush camp feel, with a well-equipped camp kitchen – the famous Shadehouse, where you can view bush birds and agile wallabies coming to drink while enjoying a cup of tea.

The BBO is now renowned around the world as a key location to study migratory shorebirds and the benthic (mud-dwelling) invertebrates that they feed on. Roebuck Bay is now one of the best studied tropical intertidal mudflats on Earth, and continued research in the bay has proven it to be the most invertebrate-rich of the world’s

mudflats – a buffet for shorebirds!

Although Roebuck Bay hosts up to 20,000 migratory shorebirds during the dry season, it is the wet season (October – April) when they are most remarkable.

At least 120,000 shorebirds can be found throughout the wet season months, including almost every shorebird species found in Australia.

The lead-up to the shorebird migration period is one of the most exciting times of the year to visit the BBO. From December, right through until early April, the bay is packed with tens of thousands of birds, and they become more and more patterned with their vibrant breeding plumage as early as January. From the beginning of March, the birds’ migration to the northern hemisphere begins – one of most incredible spectacles in the natural world. The BBO becomes a

hotspot for tourists at this time, with many eyes eagerly anticipating what’s to come.

Above the beach in front of the BBO, you can sit comfortably in a chair and watch as flock after flock rise from the mudflats, calling beautifully to one another, rising higher and higher until they come together to form a ‘flying V’, setting their compasses north, and travelling directly over the heads of the happy human onlookers.

The BBO is a not-for-profit organisation, and entirely self-funded, generating revenue through birdwatching tours, educational courses, accommodation fees and merchandise sales.

Sobrane has been hard at work creating a new, collectable range of products, all with that unique Sobrane ‘look’.

S

obrane’s work continues to make waves all around the world. Her work adorns the walls of diverse far flung locations from Port Hedland to Soriano in Italy, as well as a silo in Tungamah, and a 24m artwork on the Cradle Mountain Hotel in Tasmania. Drawing inspiration from her beautiful north west Australian tropical paradise home of Broome, Sobrane's signature birdlife-inspired paintings are larger than life.

In recent months, she’s been extra busy.

“I’ve been fully in design mode for the past six months,” says Sobrane, “creating a new designer range of products. They’ve been produced by a family business in India.”

Following a meeting with the team in India in September, a whole new range of ideas and products are set to come on board.

“The products had to be high quality and distinctively, uniquely ‘Sobrane’, “ she says. “We have also expanded our gallery to host the Sobrane range of T-shirts which will be arriving before Christmas – there will be a selection of 20 designs in soft cotton including three new designs especially for children.”

Other new products will include block-printed sarongs with Sobrane Australian birds in a pattern design and, for the first time, quality linen tea towels which sold out in the gallery within two weeks.

“We now have bulk stock of these tea towels and are setting up a distribution room in the gallery to wholesale - it’s very exciting!” she says.

It seems like the sky’s the limit for this hard-working, popular artist, as her expansion plans continue from Broome to Sydney, Perth and New York in the form of pop-up shops in cities around the world.

As ever, Sobrane’s philosophy is the secret of her success.

“The keyword for me is ‘fun’,” she says. “If it’s not fun then why do it? That’s my motto!”

Anastasia’s of Broome offers next level service to its clientele, with bespoke jewellery a speciality. By LEAH MCLENNAN.

T

he Kimberley’s swathes of land and sea have given jewellery lovers so much - rare pink diamonds and lustrous pearls to name a few. Anastasia’s of Broome, in the heart of Chinatown, is the perfect place to see a range of these organic gems and jewels.

“We have a very extensive range,” says co-owner Peter 'Hans' Hansen. “This includes the fabulous Broome pearls, both in loose form and made-up pieces.

“You can also design your own bespoke piece and have it made here.”

Anastasia’s of Broome on Carnarvon Street also carries the famous Argyle pink diamonds, the Ellendale yellows, as well as blues, blacks and the traditional white diamonds.

The store also offers the whole range of jewellery services, including repairs, replacing watch batteries and making

engagement and wedding rings.

“We are passionate about helping people through engagement, wedding and special occasions, with the finest quality gold, diamonds, other precious and semi precious stones,” Peter says.

“If we don’t have it in stock we can get it for you.”

Although the store has been the trusted family jewellers for nearly 50 years, Peter and Jill Hansen only took over the store last year.

Jill has had a love of jewellery from a young age and has extensive experience with South Sea Pearls, having worked in all aspects of the industry for 25 years.

Over the past 15 years, she has developed her own internationally popular range of jewellery called Lust Pearls, which features pearls with inlaid diamonds.

Only a limited number of each design is

released. The pieces are sold in New York, online and at Anastasia’s of Broome.

“Generally it’s limited to only 10 pieces to ensure that the wearer stands out when ever and wherever it is worn,” she says.

Jill says she was “thrilled” to see a Lust Pearls item worn at last year’s Oscars.

Back in Broome, both Peter and Jill pride themselves on giving their customers a complete jewellery experience, which includes everything from answering any questions customers might have about the items to follow-up repairs.

“When you are buying a precious, unique gem that is one of a kind you need to know what you are buying is real and valuable,” Jill says.

“We can help you pick the perfect piece and if it is for that someone special we can also help you to make it a memorable occasion.”

We kicked off our feast with a selection of oysters - au naturel with lemon on the side. We took advice from the friendly waitress who suggested we opt for the Kimberley chilli mud crab - a speciality of the kitchen and caught locally. It’s expensive, but such a memorable treat and one not to be missed if you love your seafood feisty and fresh. Chilli sauce on the side peps things up considerably. Another dish unique to this part of the world is a plate of barramundi wings. It sounds extraordinary - and it is. Barramundi ‘wings’ - or its fins – are deep fried and present with beautiful white flaky flesh and a crispy fin. They are dressed with a zingy Thai salsa. Other menu options included grilled WA marron, whole crispy reef fish and BBQ prawns to name a few. There are Asian specialities available too (with

seafood of course). The dishes are bold and generous and the staff are more than happy for you to share a selection of dishes among friends. That’s a good idea because it means you can sample more seafood treats.

And if you’re after something a bit different to kick off the day then why not give The Wharf’s Korean brunch a spin?

The Wharf has put a Korean Chef in charge for this unique addition to the menu so you can be sure it’s an authentic taste of this fascinating cuisine. While you decide on what to try, sip on some complimentary green tea. There are half a dozen or so dishes, from a wholesome chicken congee with traditional condiments on the side to the brilliantly named Bimbimbap, Korea’s answer to the ultimate rice dish. There’s free parking out the front of each, handy if you’ve hired a car. The beach is a short drive away and, if you fancy a change for breakfast, head over to Zookeeper’s Cafe, while Chinatown is just 4km away and Broome town centre 7km away.

We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor, giving easy access to the pool. The accommodation itself is spacious, tastefully decorated in neutrals and eminently comfortable. The bathroom was big and modern with a rain

shower, and it’s so handy to have a washing machine and dryer.

There’s a dining table and plenty of room to sprawl in front of the TV in the lounge; and the beds themselves were super comfy, hard to leave in fact.

We stocked the fridge up with the essentials (wine, milk, butter) and during our stay we were able to decide whether to self-cater or eat out – a big plus if you’ve got kids along for a break or just want to relax after a hard day discovering dino footprints on the beach.

There was a BBQ right next to our room too, in the garden, perfect for an alfresco feast.

We also loved cocktail night on Fridays in the pool-side bar, the friendly staff, an international collection of people from as far afield as Finland, and the nesting birds in the eaves of the hotel’s lobby just made us love this place even more.

From shell to showroom A tour of Willie Creek Pearl Farm is an unforgettable part of any visit to Broome, says Gabi Mills.

I

’m on my way to one of the most fascinating spots on earth, and my fellow passengers, drawn from all four corners of the world, are looking out of the window as we bounce along the red track to Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Along the track, we finally glimpse the ocean, and then it’s down towards the pearl farm itself, a peaceful oasis where jewels are born - literally.

The farm has been in the hands of the Banfield family since 1994 (they also operate a number of other businesses in Broome including Pearl Luggers and The Zookeepers Store), and there’s a wonderful sense of family in fact at the farm itself.

The friendly staff, including those who run the tours, are passionate advocates of the pearling industry and eager to share their knowledge about this fascinating and historical business.

Developing the tour has been an extremely savvy - and popular - move, and it’s resulted in the company regularly scooping top honours at tourism award ceremonies. In addition to running the tours, Willie Creek Pearl Farm also has one of the rare pearling licences in WA,

and has a substantial pearl shell quota, as well as severalshowrooms in Broome and Perth where customers can buy all kinds of stunning pearl jewellery.

The history of pearls puts Broome firmly in the picture and, for the past 100 years, pearlers have sought the rare South Sea pearl, a highly desirable variety of pearl which commands top prices around the world thanks to their extraordinary size and lustre.

Once at the farm we start our journey of pearl discovery at the newly built state-ofthe-art oyster hatchery where they inform us about the two distinct eco systems required to spawn and feed oysters. We then sit in a little outdoor classroom, as the tour continues with a lesson in how Pinctada maxima transforms an inserted seed into these little orbs of bright white perfection. We’re handed around oyster shells (much larger than you’d think) as well as pearls, and asked to guess what value each one has. Tiny imperfections or differences in lustre or size can be the difference between it being an average pearl to something truly unique. And you’ll add zeroes to the price tag accordingly.

Seeding pearls is a highly skilled profession and can take many years to perfect; an experienced pearl technician can literally be worth their weight in gold, we hear.

There’s a delicious Kimberley morning tea to be enjoyed after our lesson in pearl production, and then it’s down to the little jetty for a boat trip around the area of water that gives the pearl farm its name: Willie Creek.

It’s crazy beautiful and, thanks to the rollicking commentary provided by our boat’s captain, we’re all enjoying the ride immensely. We hear about the big resident croc who keeps a low profile but is most definitely out there, somewhere, in the creek, and we see the oyster shells in situ, growing and hopefully creating the next most valuable pearl in the showroom, beneath the water. It’s a hard industry requiring lots of brawn as well as brains - turning the shells to ensure the best chances for a decent pearl harvest means this kind of farming requires the same tenacity as farming on land - with the same risks from Mother Nature. effects but, thanks to Willie Creek’s team of experts, and an increased understanding of how the most efficient way to grow and harvest pearls, production in hatcheries off the Broome coast has increased greatly.

Oysters thrive in the nutrient-rich waters around the Broome coastline, filtering over 80 litres of water per hour for microscopic phytoplankton. Suspended in panels from longlines metres below the water’s surface, oysters are x-rayed to make sure the careful work by the pearl technicians is working; from those tiny seeds, pearls grow slowly and steadily over, on average, two years.

It’s delightful to chug around the creek, the breeze created by our transit a lovely respite from the heat you’ll inevitably encounter in this part of the world. If you’re an adventurous sort, why not take a scenic helicopter ride and see that incredible landscape from above? The photos you’ll take will make the investment worth it alone.

From way up high, the milky appearance of the water and sand looks like a giant has used the landscape as his own canvas; it’s a living work of art.

Before that though it’s time to visit the onsite showroomand wish, for the millionth time, that those Lotto numbers I choose each week would finally pay up. Tour guests are invited to try on ropes of pearls worth many thousands of dollars and each time, their eyes light up as the lustre of those pearls work their magic.

for sale, including Keshi (Japanese for poppyseed),Tahitian black pearls as well as freshwater pearls from the rivers of China.

We’re told that you don’t choose the pearl, the pearl chooses you. I’m pretty sure a pearl worth $20,000 has taken a shine to me, but on this occasion, I have to leave without it.

The perfect excuse, then, for a return visit.

he Tucker family know a thing or two about the Kimberley and cruising. For the past 35 years, they’ve been at the forefront of innovative tourism concepts, pioneering luxury cruising with their Great Escape Charter Company along the extraordinary Kimberley coast. Their new concept, Go Beyond Broome which has been operating since September, takes all that experience to another level, says Bree Cardilini, marketing and business

development manager.

“We wanted to make the Kimberley coast more accessible to all and that led to the idea of ‘a day in the Kimberley’,” she says.

“The two tours - Go Horizontal Falls Tours and Go Silica Beach Tours were the result.”

Until recently, a four night cruise was really the shortest option for a Kimberley cruise. Now guests are able to enjoy that bucket list Kimberley fly/cruise experience but in a day trip format from Broome.

“It’s a real point of difference for us,” says Bree. “We’re also the first tourism operator to be approved to operate from Cockatoo Island so our guests are really getting a unique chance to explore this beautiful area. Our tours are all about introducing guests to the Kimberley as a whole, not just one destination, and hopefully leaving a lasting impression.”

The two Go Tours allows guests to completely immerse themselves in their surrounds, to disconnect from everyday life and allow a little ‘me’ time in some of the most stunning landscapes on earth.

Feedback from guests so far has been very positive, says Bree.

“They absolutely love it and talk more about the entire day and the Kimberley cruise experience rather than just the excitement of seeing Horizontal Falls.”

“Our naval architect has created two custom-built fast boats, powered by triple 250-horse power Yamaha outboards,” says Bree. “Purpose-built to navigate the Kimberley waters in total comfort and style, the vessels have been designed to ride any sea conditions with cutting edge stability.”

Accommodating up to 20 guests per vessel, the tours begin with a light aircraft flight over the Buccaneer Archipelago, landing on Cockatoo Island.

MEET THE PILOT Hilary Wilkins

GM How long you’ve been a pilot, and how long have you been flying with KAS? Hilary I moved to Broome nearly 10 years ago on a two-year contract. I’d never been in a helicopter until I went to Mitchell Falls on a camping trip, and as soon as we took off, I knew I wanted to learn to fly. So my second flight was my first lesson!

GM What do you particularly enjoy about your role – what are the highlights of a day in the air from your point of view, and what time of year do you enjoy flying the most?

Hilary I love being able to share my passion

for the Kimberley with people visiting the area, and love seeing their reactions when they see the amazing colours of the land and sea from a unique aerial perspective.

All year round, there’s something different to see on every flight, depending on the time of day, height of the tide and time of year. I never get bored of the view from the office window.

GM Can you describe a typical day In the life of a KAS pilot?

Hilary There’s no such thing as a typical day in aviation, however mine usually starts with me trying to find my second shoe or belt which has been relocated by my eight-month old Kelpie pup.

At the same time, I could be answering calls and enquiries about the day’s flights, which can change at a moment’s notice, or taking future bookings. I then brew myself a coffee and head to the airport to get the chopper and paperwork ready for the day ahead.

Then after a few more phone calls and answering some emails, we’re ready to fly.

That can be anything from scenic flights around town to going further afield to places

like Eco Beach or the Dampier Peninsula.

At the end of the day it’s time to put the machine to bed, complete the paperwork and head home to see what destruction the puppy has caused while I’ve been away.

GM Where are your favourite places to take visitors and why?

Hilary I love taking people to Cape Leveque and Cygnet Bay - you get a taste of both the coast and the bush on the flight, and both locations offer a great range of tours to do once we land.

GM What makes flying above the Broome region so special in your opinion?

Hilary The colours! It’s just the most amazing palette of turquoise, white, red and green that you just don’t get anywhere else in the world.

GM What would you recommend visitors do if they have limited time but want to see as much as possible?

Hilary Take a helicopter flight of course! Even on our 30-minute or 45-minute flights you get a really unique perspective of Broome, and of course if you have time or budget to go further afield then your options are endless.

Ten years and counting

Broome Whale Watching is celebrating a decade of introducing visitors to the amazing ocean wildlife, just off the coast of Broome.

F

or thousands of years along the Kimberley Coast, the humpback whale migration has occurred annually but residents and visitors alike have been kept sheltered from their amazing acrobatic displays until now, thanks to the team at Broome Whale Watching.

For researchers and conservationists, Camden Sound Marine Park has primarily been the leading regional focus – known as the ‘maternity ward’ or ‘humpback nursery’ – where cows and calves congregate in the warmer waters from June to September each year before beginning the long journey back to Antarctic waters to feed. Yet for Broome’s visitors and local community little information has been shared about the astonishing playful whales right on our horizon.

Cameron Birch, owner and skipper of Broome Whale Watching, has spent the last 20 years exploring WA’s waters and is committed to sharing and developing this amazingly accessible marine tourism experience with the community.

“Having previous experience working in Coral Bay along the Ningaloo reef with regular whale encounters, I was keen to investigate where these friendly giants

were going next on their great trip,” explains Cameron. Thankfully, his curiosity coincided with the purchase of Sentosa Fishing Charters and the arrival of a new small family operated business in Broome launched in 2007.

With a fresh start in Broome, Cameron hit the ground running and discovered an incredible surprise – WA is home to the world’s largest group of humpback whales.

Collectively known as ‘Group 4’ these humpbacks travel north from Antarctic waters in search of an ideal place to breed, give birth and socialise. It also happened to offer Cameron the opportunity to develop the Broome Whale Watching experience in the calm waters of Cable Beach and Gantheaume Point, allowing guests to enjoy an up-close-and-personal sailing cruise.

Cameron made it his mission to establish Broome as the premier whale watching destination in WA, pioneering the very first whale watching charter in the north west region and Broome’s only marine eco-tourism specialists, with incredible results.

“Ten years ago, Broome Whale Watching was the solo operator in the North

Kimberley region offering up to three cruises a week to see some of the 22,000 humpbacks in our waters, while exploring the beauty of our coastline,” says Cameron.

“As we celebrate our 10th year in Broome in 2018, our company now runs trips seven days a week and we are delighted to announce that whale numbers have exploded – reaching over 35,000 whales in WA alone.”

“These snubfin dolphins form very tightknit social groups. They’re playful, social and shy and a real favourite among our guests.”

With programmes and competitions such as Spotty the Whale and Snubby the Snubfin Dolphin radio giveaways in partnership with Spirit FM, educational trips in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Wildlife and sustainability initiatives with local conservation and community groups, Broome Whale Watching believes it is developing a holistic approach to ecotourism in the region.

“We believe it’s an approach that will leave a positive lasting impression for future generations to safeguard the whales and dolphins and protect our unique marine environments,” says Cameron.

In 2016, KMG began as a solo GP practice and now has four full-time GPs and two part-time GPs. KMG has four reception staff, three part-time practice nurses and a practice manager. It provides a wide range of general practice services with a goal to being accessible to people of all demographics.

You find that perfect pendant that your eyes keep drawing you back to and the decision is made. You pay for your purchase, you are handed your beautifully packaged pendant and leave happy with your decision.

Did you ever stop to wonder how your pearl pendant was created? How long did it take to grow? Who decides on the value?

Well, fortunately Cygnet Bay Pearls prides itself on educating its customers.

Here is a snippet of how your pendant came to be.

CULTURING THE PEARL Australian South Sea Pearls are grown in Pinctada Maxima – the largest species of pearl producing oyster in the world – naturally abundant in the waters surrounding Broome. A pearl technician carefully makes an incision and inserts 40

a small perfectly round nuclei, made of mother of pearl, along with a piece of mantle tissue into a small sack in the base of the oyster, the tissue then attaches to the host shell to create the pearl sac – in which the pearl will grow. The mantle tissue is the only organ of an oyster that produces the liquid nacre (mother of pearl), which forms the pearl. After a healing period the oysters

are x-rayed to determine the nuclei hasn’t been rejected and then they are placed in panels and put into our ocean paddocks.

GROW AND NURTURE Over the next two years we care for our oysters. Which grow in the pristine waters of the Kimberley, one of the last marine wilderness frontiers in the world! Being a visitbroome.com.au

bi-value filter feeder, oysters need to be kept clean and healthy to produce a gem quality pearl. This process involves removing them from the ocean every four weeks to clean and maintain the shell.

HARVEST After two years of caring for our oysters it is harvest time. Once again, we have a pearl technician return to make a small incision to remove the pearl from the sack.

FARM GRADE Not all pearls produced are gem quality and it is the farm's job to give the pearls a pregrade to remove non-gem quality pearls.

Once this has been performed they are sent to our Cygnet Bay Boutique in Chinatown.

CLEAN & TUMBLE When the pearls arrive at the Cygnet Bay Boutique they are given a clean and tumble.

As we do not treat or enhance our pearls they are cleaned and tumbled using natural products only. Firstly they are tumbled with walnut kernels to remove dirt and grime, and then corn kernels which bring out the natural shine. The whole harvest can take up to a month to complete this step.

DESIGN Whether your pearl pendant was created by one of our design team, or by you through our “Just for Me” process, it has been done with love. Each pearl is matched with a setting to best compliment the pearl's shape, the gold type to enhance the pearl's colour and set by pearl jewellery experts.

Simply Ing An inspiring story of one woman’s determination to survive, Simply Ing is simply wonderful.

S

imply Ing is a Wirlomin Noongar Elder’s heartfelt and emotionally engaging story of resilience and reconnection to her culture, language and identity.

Born Ellie Nellie on an Aboriginal reserve in Australia’s south west, Ing received her nickname from her family.

Removed from her loving parents under government policy at the age of five and placed in a nearby mission, she was not only denied her history and culture but her name was changed to Helen. When her parents died, she had the responsibility of caring for her younger brother and sister.

Ing needed to be strong to survive.

Returning to her community when the mission closed, Ing reconciled with being Noongar. Her family taught her culture and language. Ing has lived through many family tragedies. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Helen (Ing) Nellie is a Wirlomin Noongar Elder. She was born on the outskirts of Borden, a hamlet in WA’s south west.

She believes she was born on 18 July, 1947, although she doesn’t possess a birth certificate.

A member of the Stolen Generations, Ing’s life is a mosaic of tragedy. Forcibly removed from her parents at five years, and again at nine, under then government policy, she was raised in a Baptist Mission.

HER HONEST EXPERIENCES GIVE INSIGHT INTO HER LIFE AND NOONGAR CULTURE AS WELL AS THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT THAT KEEPS HER GOING. Accordingly, Ing grew up caught between cultures and struggled with her identity.

Her involvement in the Wirlomin Language and Stories Project, as well as the telling of her life story, has helped her to cultivate true belonging within the Noongar community. Ing lives in Perth with her husband, Ron. The book's author, Margaret O’Brien, was born in Norseman in the WA Goldfields in 1948 and grew up in Bunbury. She started writing after retiring from a 45-year nursing career. Her writing took a dramatic turn when she met Helen (Ing) Nellie at the Perth Writer’s Festival in 2014 and became her ghostwriter. Margaret is married, a keen bird photographer and is passionate about animal welfare.
