From an unexpected landing to five decades of welcoming visitors, the Broome Visitor Centre (BVC) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026. The story begins on a wet, stormy night in January 1974 when Broome’s first tourist bureau literally “fell from the sky”. After a 30-minute departure from Broome, the captain of a Garuda DC-3 en route to Koepang, Indonesia, had to turn back due to starboard engine failure. He managed to land parallel to the Broome International Airport and all 11 passengers and three crew escaped without serious injury. The DC-3 was later acquired by the Shire of Broome, restored and repainted before being installed on the edge of town as the Broome Tourist Bureau.

bureau manager, Mr. M Strachan displaying photographs of aviation history in WA, which included the Japanese air raid on Broome in 1942 during World War 2. In November 1986 the aviation display was closed, and by November 1987 the aircraft was dismantled and transported to Jandakot Airport, where it awaited a restoration that never eventuated. It was sold to a private owner in 2003, sold again in 2012 and moved to Borden, Western Australia, where it now serves as accommodation.

50 years ago, on the 7th of August 1976 Alan Ridge, Minister for Tourism, officially opened the DC-3 as Broome’s First Tourist Bureau. Between its opening in August 1976 and March 1978, the bureau welcomed more than 25,000 tourists.

Due to demand, the decision was made to build a larger centre. In December 2006, the BVC moved into its current multi-million-dollar welcome centre. In recognition of the BVC’s heritage, the building was designed to represent an aircraft with sweeping wings either side and propeller-like fans. The old BVC building was taken over and renovated by local publishers Magabala Books.

By 1981 the number of visitors to Broome had grown substantially, so a new $170,000 purpose-built Visitor Centre was constructed across the road from the DC-3. The aircraft was again restored and re-opened as an aviation museum, organised by the tourist

Today, the BVC is a not-for-profit organisation that, with the support of the Shire of Broome and its valued members, welcomes more than 55,000 visitors through its doors each year. Peak days can see over 700 visitors to the centre.

THE BROOME VISITOR CENTRE HAS A NEW HOME

On a monsoonal, stormy night in January 1974, a Garuda Airlines C47A Dakota DC-3 aircraft en-route to Indonesia, turned back due to starboard engine failure. Landing parallel to the Broome International Airport, all 11 passengers and three crew escaped without serious injury. The DC-3 was later acquired by the Shire of Broome.

The Garuda DC-3 aircraft was restored, repainted and then erected at the edge of town, with a new tail number VN-BME, and a brand new name RMA Broome. On the 7th August 1976, the Minister for Tourism, Alan Ridge, officially opened the DC-3 as Broome’s first tourist bureau. The Dakota serviced the town's visitors for five years.

The official opening of a new $170,000 Broome Tourist Bureau building was held on 19 November 1981 by Tourism Minister Ian Laurence, located just across the road from the DC-3. The aircraft was re-opened as an aviation museum, organised by Tourist Bureau Manager Mr M. Strachan. It closed in 1986.

The Broome Visitor Centre moved into its current location near Male Oval in 2006. The centre was designed to resemble an aircraft, featuring sweeping wings on either side and propeller-like fans. The original building found a new purpose as the home of Magabala Books. Twenty years on, our doors remain open to welcome visitors.

Camels on Cable Beach, Broome

T

Photographer Hugh Brown (far right), Karakorum Range, Northern Pakistan

here is a particular kind of restlessness that affects many at different times in their lives. And when Hugh Brown arrived in the Kimberley in 1998, he wasn't sure which way it would go. He had left a career in strategy consulting behind him and half-expected it to pull him back. So fearing his time here was limited, every weekend he would drive, somewhere different and often over large distances, camera in the car not as the point of the trip but as part of it. The adventure and the image were inseparable. Without both, something was missing. But the Kimberley held him. Over the years that followed Hugh worked his way into the Kimberley by every means available – four-wheel drive, fixed-wing, helicopter, floatplane, quad bike, inflatable raft. He walked numerous of the region's rivers, often solo, often in the wet season, with extensive training in both desert and tropical survival behind him. The Kimberley not being a place he has merely visited. But one he knows with every fibre of his being – though still always learning.

Wet Season Storm, Entrance Point, Broome

In 2006 a commissioned photo shoot took Hugh to West Africa – a trip he nearly declined, and it changed the trajectory of his work entirely. Over the next two decades he photographed large-scale and artisanal mining operations across more than 35 countries, in some of the world's most unforgiving environments. He has worked in the bowels of an active volcano. On the faces of 500-metre cliffs in Pakistan's Karakoram. In the Russian subArctic at minus 58 degrees Celsius. Through Africa’s sub-Saharan Sahel and deep into the Congo Basin. In the Bolivian Andes, again at very high altitude, Hugh worked in one of the most dangerous mountains on earth. A mountain that is said to have claimed between four and eight million lives since mining began there in 1545. This was one of the darkest blackest environments imaginable deep inside the bowls of a 4782 metre mountain where ground collapses were an almost daily occurrence and lives were continuing to be lost weekly. 15

Percussion Driller, Cerro Rico, Andes Altiplano, Bolivia Artisanal Gold Miners, Guinea, West Africa

Much of Hugh's mining work was shot at night. Not by necessity but by choice. At night he had total control of the light, could position a haul truck against a boab tree in Mali, backlit by lighting plant; could draw the geometry of an opencut mine from the jungle darkness in Ghana's Ashanti region or photograph drill rigs under an umbrella at night in torrential tropical rain. He spent years developing techniques for working in darkness, under pressure, in places where coming back without quality images was not an option. A few years ago much of Hugh's work internationally became very difficult and dangerous and he returned to Broome for a breather. In the short space of about 10 years, the world had changed dramatically.

Roebuck Bay, Broome

Over the years Hugh has published nine large-format books, including two on the Kimberley and three on the Pilbara, most of them now sold out. He has supplied much of the material for books by others including Australian Geographic and some of this country’s most prominent people. Hugh’s work has also featured in some of the world’s most prestigious newspapers and magazines. Hugh says, “Much of the last 30 years I have devoted also to photographing the essence of the Kimberley and the Pilbara. Wanting ultimately to go beyond making just beautiful images - which anyone can do to making images that would represent my own contribution to the historical record of this planet and human history.” As meaningless as I know that ultimately is, it was something that felt deeply important to me. Hugh continues to make books because this is what he loves. In the process documenting aspects of the world’s history - landscapes, people and industrial - being subject to rapid change. The books being something tangible and physical that can't one day be wiped out with the press of a button. Because the recording of history is ultimately a teacher, it is important to instruct future generations about what we did and did not do well. 16

Since making his first astrophotography images of a Kimberley boab in the Oscar Range in 2003 Hugh has continued to sharpen what has been a life-long learning process shooting astrophotography landscapes and nightscapes. The Kimberley is one of the most sparsely populated regions on earth, its skies among the darkest. The equipment and software available now makes possible what was beyond film and early digital. And he has almost 25 years of hard-won knowledge about working in the dark.

BOOKS Available for purchase

The tours Hugh runs from Broome now are the natural extension of all of it. His aim on any given evening is straightforward: to show his guests the Kimberley at its most beautiful (on any given day) – at dusk, and then under the night sky, and to leave them with the technical knowledge and the confidence to move forward when out in the field on their own. Tours are tailored according to the individual standards of each participant and the techniques shared are the ones developed the hard way, over decades, often in places most photographers will never go in some of the world’s most extreme environments. Hugh’s tours are not about a simple Google or AI search which will overwhelm with all myriad of conflicting (and often inaccurate) insights. They are about sharing Hugh’s own learning journey with the intent that participants can scale up far more rapidly than the years he invested in learning what he knows. Experience the Journey from Shell to Showroom A Broome icon, Willie Creek Pearl Farm is a national award-winning experience inviting visitors to discover the fascinating journey of the Australian South Sea pearl.

J

ust a short drive from Broome and world famous Cable Beach, Willie Creek Pearl Farm invites you into the heart of the Kimberley, where breathtaking scenery meets one of Australia's most unique and sustainable industries. Here, you'll gain an exclusive behind-the-scenes insight into modern pearl farming and experience the remarkable journey of the pearl, from shell to showroom. For more than 35 years, the Banfield family has proudly shared their passion for Australian South Sea Pearls with people from around the world. Today, three generations work together in the Western Australian family business, which celebrated 10 years of commercial pearl farming in 2025 following the acquisition of wild stock quota in 2015. Over the

decades, Willie Creek Pearls has grown into one of Western Australia's most awarded tourism operators, inviting you to discover one of Australia's most iconic natural treasures. Your experience extends well beyond the pearl farm. In Broome, you can continue your pearling journey at Pearl Luggers, the award-winning heritage attraction located in the heart of Chinatown, which celebrates 20 years under Willie Creek Pearls' ownership. Here, you'll step back in time to discover Broome's fascinating pearling history, from the dangerous days of hard-hat diving to the evolution of the modern cultured pearl industry. You can also explore two beautiful Willie Creek Pearls jewellery showrooms in Broome, conveniently located in Chinatown

and Cable Beach, while the experience continues in Perth with four showrooms and live pearl harvest demonstrations, bringing the story of the Australian South Sea Pearl to even more visitors. Your journey begins along the iconic pindan track, travelling by 4WD or air-conditioned coach with guided commentary before arriving at the spectacular farm. Set amongst the turquoise waters of Willie Creek, the farm is home to the Pinctada maxima oyster, the world's largest pearl-producing oyster, where nutrient-rich tides create the perfect conditions to sustainably produce the world's finest Australian South Sea Pearls. Discover the delicate art and science of pearl farming as you explore the Pearl Oyster Nursery and learn about the meticulous process of seeding and caring for oysters over several years. One of the tour's most memorable experiences is a cruise aboard Mimi Pearl, Australia's first purpose-built, solarpowered electric tour vessel. Quietly gliding across the pristine waters of Willie Creek, where you travel alongside oyster long lines while learning about sustainable pearl farming and, if you’re lucky, spotting one of the creek's resident crocodiles. The vessel's name honours both the Yawuru word Mimi, meaning grandmother, and the name given to Willie Creek Pearls matriarch Valda Banfield by her grandchildren, reflecting the family's deep connection to both culture and generations of pearling. After your cruise, relax with homemade damper and refreshments at Harvest Café while taking in the spectacular Kimberley surrounds before enjoying one of the visitbroome.com.au

tour's signature highlights, a live pearl harvest. After years of meticulous care, an oyster is carefully opened to reveal the pearl hidden inside. Until that very moment, nobody knows exactly what will emerge, making every harvest a genuine moment of anticipation, discovery and wonder. Your experience concludes inside the showroom with the Care of Pearls presentation, where you’ll learn how to properly wear and care for pearls, gain an understanding of the five virtues that determine a pearl's value, and receive personalised guidance while exploring the jewellery collection to find a piece that truly resonates with you. Willie Creek Pearls' commitment to exceptional visitor experiences has earned widespread industry recognition. At the 2025 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards, the business received Gold in Ecotourism, Gold in Tourism Retail & Hire Services and Silver in Tourist Attractions, further strengthening its position as one of Western Australia's most awarded tourism operators. In 2025, Chairman Rob Banfield was also honoured with the prestigious

Sir David Brand Medal for his outstanding contribution to tourism in Western Australia, the state's highest individual tourism honour. Innovation continues beyond the farm, with Willie Creek Pearls partnering with Marine Biomedical to supply Mother of Pearl shell for the development of PearlBone™, a pioneering marinederived calcium carbonate biomaterial developed from pearl oyster shell that is biocompatible with human bone and has the potential to transform orthopaedic trauma treatment. It's another example of how every part of the pearl oyster can contribute to a more sustainable future. Whether you're fascinated by the story of the Australian South Sea Pearl, captivated by the beauty of the Kimberley or simply looking for an unforgettable Broome experience, Willie Creek Pearl Farm offers an authentic journey like no other. Sensational Stingrays 18ct with pink and white Argyle diamonds

Finding the

Beauty

Artist-jeweller John Miller returns once again to the town that shaped his creative vision, presenting an iconic collection of Broome-inspired jewellery. By John Miller

B

eauty is an elusive, intangible thing. People debate its true nature, subtleties and nuance. For some it’s a rose, for others perhaps a car. Broome hosts an abundance of natural beauty and wonder. From the soft coo of the peaceful doves to the crystalline call of the pied butcherbird, the drama of a Gantheaume sunset or tropical thunderstorms, it’s all quite magical. Others may find beauty in the fishing—or even perhaps at the Roebuck hotel. As a young jeweller in search of inspiration, this place was a gift. Having spent a lot of my childhood here, the bay and beyond held magical, dreamlike memories ... and infinite potential.

Broome Visitors Guide | 2026/2027

The creatures of the sea and tidal flats. The boundless beauty of the landscape, its cliffs and tides, shore birds, pearls… Now, some 45 years later, I’ve been drawn back to rediscover and elaborate on the work I started here. Much to my mother’s dismay, my teenage bedroom was a chaotic ‘laboratory’ of makeshift tools, bits of wire, chemicals, old coins, mineral specimens and sketch pads full of crazy patterns and ideas. Nothing has changed much since. Jewellery has been good to me. It’s something I seem to have a natural flair for. From day one at 18, in a little silver shop in Cottesloe, a welcome improvement on my bedroom, I knew this was something with endless possibilities.

Artist-jeweller, John Miller

53 years later, I’m still not there. My favourite piece? The one I haven’t made yet! The work has taken me across Australia and around the world. I’ve had the joy of teaching and training lots of creative people. I now somehow employ fifteen people—not bad for an arts-based manufacturing business. My work is my village, and my staff are my friends and colleagues. It’s a joy and privilege to be able to employ and mentor these lovely people. Above all, I try to make it fun, and it’s wonderful to know people love wearing my work. There are always those coming in saying how much joy wearing my things brings. That’s the ultimate reward. Oceans of joy. People ask if I’m worried about being copied, but it seems perhaps nobody wants to work that hard. Around 1980, in Broome I somehow thought of making some little steel punches. If I made a pearlshell, a boab, a diver’s helmet and a lugger, I could say ‘Broome’ on a ring or pendant. The idea worked, so I made a few more. A fish a dolphin, a kangaroo … Somehow, I’d found a way to depict Australia in a new and unique way. The punch collection grew. By using hand engraving around the patterns, I could put them in a landscape, or underwater. The technique evolved and the collection grew. Some might say it went from sideline to obsession. Now there’s over 1,500 punches and assorted unique tooling to achieve an ever-changing product range. It’s a constant quest to find the next little improvement. Shore birds are the next project. In studying books on jewellery of tribal cultures, there are often things so simple, visitbroome.com.au

so almost clumsy, yet astonishingly perfect in form. Made by people squatting in mud huts in the jungle, with a few primitive tools and a charcoal fire.

Australia’s enthralling natural appeal is a good place to begin. Though putting this into wearable metal was the ultimate challenge.

So the question remains. What makes it so beautiful?

So that’s the mission… The best and most appealing way to say ‘Broome’ or ‘Australia’ in something tiny, compelling, and yes, beautiful. Just like the tribal folk, It also needs to be elegant, comfortable and durable—and easily repaired if necessary. At the risk of being pretentious, I could perhaps even call it ‘art’. Let the wearer decide.

“…so easy to look at, so hard to define…” My earliest childhood memory is being plumped in a rock pool on Cable Beach. The water was full of tiny, colourful fish and I recall trying to grasp them with my tiny hands. I’m still grasping clumsily at trying to capture that beauty. 18ct. rose gold with diamonds

Now, after living in coastal forests of Yallingup for some 35 years, I’ve come back to Broome. After a very successful exhibition here in 2024, it seemed like a reasonable Idea. A little shop in Chinatown came up for lease, and I decided to jump. For more information visitbroome.com.au/ members/john-miller-design-broome

Allure's Broome Showroom 25 Dampier Terrace, Chinatown

Born of the Tide B

efore Allure. Before jewellery. Before even the first cultured pearl, there was Broome.

By the early 1900s, this remote coastal town had become one of the most important pearling centres in the world. Hundreds of luggers and their crews were drawn to its shores in search of something rare and luminous. But Broome’s story has never been simple. It is shaped by resilience, innovation and an enduring relationship with the ocean.

Where Broome’s pearling past meets a new generation of craftsmanship.

A lucky break saw the late Bill Reed AM reshape the pearling industry in Broome.

As the industry evolved from dangerous free diving to sophisticated pearl cultivation in the mid 20th century, the focus shifted from shell to something far more precious, the pearl itself. In the pristine waters off the Kimberley coast, Australian South Sea pearls emerged as some of the largest and most valuable in the world, prized for their exceptional size and luminous lustre. Decades later, it was this same coastline, and the allure of the pearl, that drew marine biologist and pearling pioneer Bill Reed to the Kimberley. After years spent exploring international waters, Reed arrived in Broome in the early 1970s, captivated by the untapped potential of its pearl beds and emerging industry. What followed was not just a career, but a lifelong contribution 28

to refining pearl farming practices and introducing Broome pearls to the Australian market. In an unexpected turn, a broken leg led him to open Broome’s first pearl store in a modest shed on Dampier Terrace in Chinatown. What began as an unfortunate circumstance became something far more enduring, eventually leading to the foundation of Allure South Sea Pearls. What makes Allure distinctly Broome is not only where it was founded, but how it evolved. A partnership formed in 1989 between Reed and second-generation jeweller Lindsay Youd brought together two complementary worlds: the science and sourcing of pearls, and the craft of fine jewellery design and manufacture. Together, they transformed raw ocean treasures into pieces to be worn, treasured and passed down through generations. Today, the next generation continues this legacy, with the Youd family carrying forward more than four decades of specialised pearl knowledge, craftsmanship and innovation. Every Allure piece remains deeply connected to place. From Broome’s turquoise waters to the organic forms shaped by the ocean, the environment continues to inform both design and philosophy. The result is jewellery inherently tied to the Kimberley, not simply inspired by it. In a town built on pearls, stories are everywhere. Some are formed slowly beneath the surface. Others are shaped by the people who dedicate their lives to understanding them. Discover Allure’s exquisite range of South Sea pearl and diamond jewellery in their Broome showrooms at 25 Dampier Terrace, Chinatown, and Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, as well as in their Perth showroom at 316 Rokeby Road, Subiaco. Visit visitbroome.com.au/members/ alluresouth-sea-pearls ALLURE TODAY Today Allure South Sea Pearls is led by Co-founder and Managing Director, Lindsay Youd along with the support and assistance of his son and third generation jeweller, Louis Youd.

Beyond the Horizon Experience a natural phenomenon that will take your breath away before indulging in a luxury houseboat stay.

T

here’s something magical about flying over the Kimberley coast. The colours are simply dazzling as they morph from sandy white beaches being kissed by an aquamarine ocean, to the deep, leafy greens of forested land, slashed by ochre roads. Soaring over the Buccaneer Archipelago, tiny islands punctuate the multi-hued ocean and mangroves seem to drift on the waves, they stand so distant from the shore. Blink and the scene changes in a slideshow of natural splendour. This is what you will experience when embarking on a journey with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures. A frisson of excitement surges through the eight passengers as the seaplane approaches Talbot Bay, flying over rippled land that looks as if it’s been lifted from The Lord of the Rings. It feels like we are among a lucky few, as we glide across these remote lands. The Traditional Owners, the Dambeemangaddee people, believe much of Dambimangari Country was created by the writhing actions of a female Woongudd Snake. The undulations in the landscape bear witness to this creation story. And then we’re there, circling over the Horizontal Falls, whirlpools of white, swirling water clear evidence of the power of the tide as it squeezes through the two

gaps in the ridges of the McLarty Range like air whooshing to freedom from the neck of a balloon. Sir David Attenborough wasn’t wrong when he described this as one of the world's great natural wonders. This isn’t the end of the journey, though. On an overnight tour with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, the aerial view of the falls is just the start. The seaplane glides across the surface of the water, pulling up at the main pontoon, which sits in the middle of Talbot Bay.

Framed by a rocky escarpment with a mantel of greenery that tumbles to the water’s edge, it’s a rather spectacular place to land. Greeted with smiles we disembark, our excitement at an alltime high. The rest of the day is packed with adventure, whether it’s taking a powerboat tour of the Falls; cruising down Cyclone Creek, watching for crocodiles lurking in the mangrove fringe; fishing for dinner; or taking a dip in the pool at the marine visitbroome.com.au

viewing platform, sociable tawny nurse sharks gliding passively close on the other side. As the day sinks towards the horizon, dinner is served. Staying on the main pontoon, there’s an alfresco barbecue on the outdoor deck with local barramundi as the star. On Jetwave Pearl, the luxury overnight houseboat, it’s a more refined affair, with a private chef dishing up a three-course menu to delight even the most refined palate. Lulled to sleep in the private air-conditioned cabin, morning creeps in like a watercolour painting, gentle pinks and soft blues heralding dawn. By the time breakfast is done, the cliffs have turned ochre, glowing in the burgeoning sunlight, providing a final spectacle as a Kimberley-style farewell. Then it’s one last flight, taking you over and above; one final opportunity to witness the untouched beauty of this part of the country; one last moment to sear this moment into your memory. roome is absolutely brimming with natural wonders and unique phenomena to take in.

With so much to see and do, if a few hours are all you have up your sleeve book Fly Broome’s half day tour, which manages to cover a wealth of impressive attractions. It even makes time for a hot meal, a peek at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm’s luminous jewels and a quick dip in the resort’s infinity pool. If you have the option, take your time soaking in the sights of this seemingly far away land by opting for the full day tour. Whichever tour option you choose, you’ll be mesmerised by what you see… Horizontal Falls is an attraction that can’t be missed, and there’s no better way to witness it in action than from the sky. An entirely unique phenomena hailed by David Attenborough as one of the world’s greatest natural wonders (and he’s seen a few).

In the turquoise water of Talbot Bay, the rapid and immensely high tidal current squeezes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, spurting out impressive horizontal waterfalls that reverse and flow in the opposite direction as the tide turns each day. Fly over the falls and witness the worldrenowned spectacle in all its glory. A visit to Broome wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a pearl farm, and Cygnet Bay is one of the most reputable. There you’ll have the chance to indulge in a hot breakfast or lunch, depending on the time of your tour. With fresh, locally sourced barramundi available for lunch, it doesn’t get much more Broome than that. Following your meal, embark upon a Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm Discovery Tour if you’ve opted for a half day. Learn about the history of Cygnet Bay and

how they culture some of the finest pearls in the world. Once the tour is complete make sure to take some time and enjoy the showroom. If you’ve got the luxury of a full day, you’re in for a treat as you experience some of the largest tropical tides in the world on an exhilarating sea safari experience. The attractions don’t stop there. As you explore the best of Broome from the sky, you’ll have the optimal vantage point for viewing Cape Leveque, Beagle Bay, the Lacepede Islands, James Price Point and more. Your knowledgeable pilot will ensure you won’t miss a thing and land with an abundance of new insights and rich experiences to take home. Book at visitbroome.com.au/members/ fly-broome

Watch whales, spot snubbies Spot a snubbie or get up close with a breathtaking humpback whale with Broome Whale Watching.

F

or many years, the acrobatic displays of humpback whales and their incredible migration to the Kimberley had been kept a secret… until Broome Whale Watching was established in 2007. For researchers and conservationists, Camden Sound Marine Park, located 400km north of Broome, has primarily been the leading regional focus—known as the ‘maternity ward’ or ‘humpback nursery’. From late June to early September, close to 30,000 whales embark on a long journey from Antarctica. Searching for warmer waters and an ideal place to mate, give birth and socialise, humpback whales spend their winter holidays in Broome each year. In the early days, little information had been shared about the astonishing playful whales right on our state’s doorstep. Cameron Birch, owner and skipper of Broome Whale Watching, spent the last 20 years exploring WA’s coast. He was committed to sharing and developing this amazingly accessible marine experience with the community, building a new tourism industry in Broome. Having worked in Coral Bay along the

42

Broome Visitors Guide | 2026/2027

Ningaloo Reef in the early 2000s, Cameron encountered numerous whales. “I was keen to investigate where these friendly giants were going next on their great journey,” says Cameron. His curiosity coincided with the purchase of Sentosa Fishing Charters in 2007. With a fresh start in Broome, Cameron hit the ground running and discovered an incredible surprise—WA is home to the world’s largest group of humpback whales. It was time to introduce the Kimberley’s first whale watching vessel, Observer. In 2008, Observer, a purpose-built whale watching vessel, was put to work offering whale watching and sunset experiences three times per week. Broome Whale Watching has evolved from this fastpaced adrenaline hit aboard, Observer, to a modern first-class personalised service on the newly acquired Orcaella, a 50foot catamaran. With breathtaking views from the top deck, guests are wowed in more ways than one. Whale watching and sunset cruises are now offered daily between the months of late June until early September. It’s no surprise that Broome Whale Watching has been voted Top 10 Things To Do in Broome on TripAdvisor, for the past five years, a real highlight of any visit to the region. Not only is Broome the destination for whale watching, it is also the home to our rare Australian snubfin dolphin. With his love for marine life, Cameron recognised some time ago, another unique opportunity to showcase the uniqueness of this amazing destination, Broome. The rare Australian snubfin dolphin is another hidden gem, found in Roebuck Bay. “Only seen in the northern coasts of Australia, these strange looking dolphins with a melon shaped head form tight-knit social groups,” says Cameron. “They’re playful but at times shy and are a real favourite among our guests.” visitbroome.com.au

“With its incredibly diverse ecosystem, Roebuck Bay is also a sanctuary for numerous marine life from bottlenose dolphins, turtles and dugongs to manta rays, sea snakes and juvenile leopard sharks,” explains Cameron. “It is a nature lover’s playground giving spectators opportunities to spot Broome’s spectacular wildlife.” Providing wildlife interactions and unforgettable sunset cruises is just one

aspect of a Broome Whale Watching experience. “As an ecotourism company, we do our absolute best to educate guests about our environment, contribute to local conservation efforts and helping local communities,” says Cameron. “Working closely with Animal Native Rescue: Broome has given our guests and staff an opportunity to aid in the rehabilitation of turtles and be involved in their subsequent release into the wild.”

Broome Whale Watching has developed a holistic approach to ecotourism in the region. “We believe this approach will leave a positive lasting impression for future generations to safeguard the whales and dolphins and protect our backyard,” says Cameron. Galwey Pearls

Timeless elegance in Broome. or almost three decades, Galwey Pearls has been part of Broome’s story, creating distinctive jewellery inspired by the beauty of Australian South Sea pearls and the extraordinary landscape they come from.

F

With decades of knowledge and a genuine love of pearls, the team welcomes visitors to take their time, learn about Australian South Sea pearls and discover the subtle differences in shape, colour and lustre that make each one remarkable.

Located on Broome’s iconic Pearlers Boardwalk, Galwey Pearls is a locally owned family business with a passion for beautiful pearls, individual design and genuine, personal service.

Adding another layer to the experience, Galwey Pearls now adjoins Sable & Sea, a new boutique to Broome bringing together fashion, lifestyle pieces and a relaxed coastal aesthetic.

Every pearl has its own character. Its shape, lustre, colour and surface tell a story, and it is this natural individuality that makes Australian South Sea pearls so special. Rather than searching for perfection in uniformity, Galwey celebrates the differences that make each pearl — and each piece of jewellery — completely unique.

Together, the two boutiques reflect a shared sense of place — where the outback meets the ocean. It is a phrase that captures Broome perfectly: rich earthy tones meeting turquoise water, rugged landscapes softened by the sea, and a style that feels both grounded and effortlessly coastal.

The collection ranges from timeless pearl strands and elegant earrings to contemporary designs, statement pieces and one-ofa-kind creations. Many pieces are designed in-house, bringing together beautiful pearls, precious metals and gemstones in a style that is relaxed, sophisticated and unmistakably Broome. For the Galwey family, helping someone choose a pearl is about far more than making a purchase. It is about finding something that feels right for the person wearing it — whether it marks a milestone, becomes a treasured gift or simply captures a memory of time spent in Broome.

Whether you choose a half-day or full-day charter, there’s plenty of opportunity to cast a line and land something special. All quality gear, bait and tackle are provided, and the crew are on hand with patient guidance when you want it and space when you don’t. “We target quality table fish such as red emperor, coral trout, blue line emperor, golden snapper, saddletail perch, rankin cod and many more. For anglers looking for a challenge, there are also hard-fighting species such as giant trevally, golden trevally, cobia and Chinaman fish. Tuna and queenfish are also regular catches, though the species that continues to excite Michael and many guests the most is the Spanish mackerel. “Spanish mackerel are an incredible fish to catch. Eat Local, Eat Fresh W

hen we think of seafood caught fresh from the ocean on our doorstep, we think of The Wharf. It’s been serving the best local seafood to the tourists and locals of Broome for over 31 years, and it continues to do so in its location along Sanctuary Drive. The Wharf is just a 10-minute stroll from the beach, so you can smell the ocean air as you dine on the best it can provide. Local wild caught barramundi and threadfin salmon are available simply grilled to perfection or in a classic, deliciously crispy fish and chips, or perhaps you'd prefer a fantastic feast of a number of crustacean delicacies including Slipper Lobster, Northwest Scampi and WA Marron. At The Wharf you can enjoy the cool, air-conditioned interior seating, surrounded by lush indoor plants or take in the fresh air on the outside deck, spacious and shaded with a cool breeze blowing through. Sit back and peruse the well-thought-out wine list, carefully chosen to pair well with seafood. The modern bar with specialist spirits and house crafted cocktails add to the ambience and complement their Japanese inspired daily specials – including their delicious sashimi that is fresh and delicate. We recommend you try the delicious, famous Barramundi Wings with Thai Salsa and the WA Seafood Coconut Curry, showcasing a mix of the best local seafood. And you can’t go wrong with the fresh oysters, which are prepared five different ways – natural served with lemon wedges; wakame seaweed with a zesty soy; Kilpatrick with finely chopped crispy bacon; Japanese panko oysters with a delicious wasabi mayo; and unique to The Wharf is their ginger soy shallot sauce. Try them all to find your favourite. The ethos of the restaurant is ‘The Way Seafood Should be, Fresh, Local, Simple’. For something unique to The Wharf, we recommend you also try their new Sanbashi Izakaya menu – ‘SANBASHI’ meaning Wharf in Japanese – Tapas style plates to complement their carefully curated selection of sake, fine spirits & cocktails. Try their modern take on their Sashimi Tartare selection served with Yuzu Soy Dressing, Yarra Valley Salmon Caviar, Pink Pepper and Shredded Shiso or the mouthwatering Sake & Miso Butter Scallops grilled with Sake, Miso Butter and chives. Make sure you’re there in the afternoon to make the most of the daily happy hour from 2pm to 5pm, where oysters are half price. 4 Sanctuary Road, Broome. Call (08) 9192 5700. ome places stay with you long after you leave. Berkeley River Lodge is one of them. Tucked into a remote corner of The Kimberley, where the Berkeley River winds its slow way out to the Timor Sea, she has spent years quietly enchanting the travellers lucky enough to find her. And as of 1 May, her doors are open once more for what is shaping to be her most beautiful season yet. The off-season brought with it a longimagined refurbishment—a considered reimagining of the lodge her custodians had been planning for some time, brought to life in collaboration with Empire Home.

Broome Visitors Guide | 2026/2027

Every villa has been thoughtfully restored, with interiors that draw their palette directly from the landscape outside: ochre cliffs, paperbark bone, river silt, and the deep, slow blue of the Timor at dusk. Beds have been refitted, bathrooms refreshed, and the outdoor decks reimagined to make the most of the views that have always been her most generous gift. The main lodge has been reworked with new finishes and softer corners that invite slower meals and longer conversations. The kitchen has welcomed a menu that leans even further into the region's wild bounty—fresh line caught fish, native

botanicals foraged from the country at her doorstep, long, lingering lunches that drift easily into golden afternoons. Every detail has been reconsidered, every choice made with the long view in mind. The result is a lodge that feels at once unmistakably herself, and beautifully renewed. Beyond the villas, the experience remains unmistakably hers. Mornings begin with the soft wash of river light on the cliffs, the air still and full of birdsong. Days unfold at the pace you choose—fishing the tidal flats for barramundi, scenic flights over the King George Falls, helicopter picnics on hidden sandbars, sundowners as the river turns to gold. Nothing here is hurried. Nothing here needs to be. What makes Berkeley River Lodge so quietly compelling is that she has never tried to be anywhere else. She is unapologetically of The Kimberley— remote, wild, deeply beautiful, and absolutely worth the journey. Guests

fly in from Darwin on a scenic charter that doubles as the first chapter of the experience, the red country unfurling beneath the wings before the river appears like a ribbon of silver below. For Broome visitors dreaming of extending their northern adventure, she is the natural next chapter. To pair the pearling coast with the river-meets-ocean magic of the East Kimberley is to experience one of the most rewarding journeys this country offers—two halves of the same wild north, each utterly distinct, each entirely unforgettable. The Berkeley River Lodge season runs from 1 May to 30 August—a short, golden window when The Kimberley is at her most beguiling. Word travels quickly here, and the travellers who love her tend to plan well in advance, quietly securing their place in the seasons ahead. Kimberley Serenity Settle in at the Fitzroy River Lodge and experience pure serenity within this expansive property set amongst the bushland.

T

he Fitzroy River Lodge is located in the heart of the Kimberley, situated beautifully on the banks of the Martuwarra River (Fitzroy River). Earlier this year the lodge, surrounding communities, and a large area around the township of Fitzroy Crossing, suffered severe flood damage from the effects of Cyclone Ellie. Due to the help from DFES, Australian Defence Force, locals, and multiple other agencies, the iconic destination is back open for business and looking forward to rebuilding sections of the property as needed — better than ever. The area is bustling at the moment, with tourism steadily getting busier and the rebuilding of the new dual laneway bridge boosting vibrancy within the area.

The Fitzroy River Lodge offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all travellers. The campground is open (at reduced capacity) for the self-driver travellers. You can wander around the property, have sunset on the river banks, and simply ‘chilllax’ on fifty acres of natural bushland. Expect to see amazing wildlife on the property — local birdlife for the ‘twitchers’, Wallabies enjoying the early mornings, and the odd large cow that has escaped mustering. The Fitzroy River is also a must-see attraction — whether at the end of the dry season to appreciate the expanse of the river, or during the wet season when it turns into a magnificent spectacle. The spacious motel rooms enclose a beautifully refreshing pool, complete with sunlounges and sunbathing ‘decks’. Amenities and features include free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs, workspaces for remote travellers, and room service too. New safari tents are now available (with or without ensuites) as well. Tucked out of the way, facing bushland — welcome the most relaxing end to your day in this special space. A full bar service, a la carte restaurant, bar menu, 24-hour check-in, and conference rooms are all available to enhance your stay. The team have worked hard to get the property back to what it was and continue to improve it still. Come say hi to the friendly and welcoming staff, even if you don’t have time to stop for the night. uring the 1880s, at the onset of the pearling industry, Chinatown was a bustle of activity, with its opium and gambling dens and corrugated iron sheds tacked together to house pearling crews and noodle kitchens. Chinatown became a multicultural melting pot and this spirit still continues today, with its unique architecture providing a glimpse of days gone by. Today, Paspaley Plaza is your one-stop shopping destination, and is home to Coles, Australia Post, plus more than 25 specialty stores on site. For those interested in Broome’s unique pearling history, the outdoor Colonnade displays a pearling timeline, showing the journey of the Paspaley Pearling Co. from 1935 through to today. Paspaley Pearling Co. are pioneers of the South Sea Pearling Industry, and the pearls they produce here in Broome are known as the world’s very best.

Chinatown Pharmacy, Vinh’s Nails and Spa, Broome Laser Clinic, The Barber of Broome, Colours Studio and Broome Thyme all offer fantastic health, wellness and beauty services. If you are looking for fashion, you’ll find unique home grown labels, such as Pops Plus Co — a beautiful boutique retail outlet offering unique designer labels, along with Rip Curl, Clifton Collective and Australian Red Cross also offering a range of ladies', men’s and children’s fashion. These are great stores to visit if you are looking for gifts, as is Chinatown Newsagency. Technology gurus can be found at Entertainment Konnections, located in the air-conditioned Atrium, where you can have a coffee at the indoor food court.

Play a game of giant sized chess with the kids, or visit Sportspower Broome to find all of your sporting equipment, clothing and footwear. Anastasia’s of Broome Meet Broome’s most trusted pearl and diamond jeweller.

B

ehind Jill Hansen and her Anastasia’s of Broome, there is a rich background leading to the thriving company based in Broome today

brilliance of the pearl (or pearls) to the maximum extent possible.

It all started over 30 years ago, when Jill was captivated not only by pearls but the entire culture and mystique that surrounds them. She was determined to build her professional life around these incredibly beautiful gems and was lucky enough to be able to do so firstly through Nash Pearls, and now Anastasia’s of Broome. Jill’s journey commenced with her training in the Cook Islands where she mastered the art and practice of seeding pearls, harvesting, and grading them. She makes no apologies for trying to infect others with a love of pearls. Jill says “these are beautiful jewels which can express so much about nature and indeed our own inner being”. Of course, Anastasia’s of Broome doesn’t just sell pearls. They are above all an artistic and creative company which seeks to present pearls in a fashion context. That’s why all Anastasia’s pearls are completed by immaculate finishings in gold, platinum or silver, which are designed to exploit the

Another range which the business is immensely proud of is its diamond range, which varies in sizes and a multitude of colours from pink, blue, green, and brown. There’s also a distinctive focus on stocking unique and bespoke jewellery hand-crafted here in Broome or WA, as well as an extensive range of quality European designs.

Ultimately though, Anastasia’s jewellery isn’t just about its immaculate designs or the purity of the gold it uses, it’s about helping you find the piece that’s right for you and then fashioning it into beautiful jewellery for you to choose to allow its natural wonder to express your true self. As the first business in Broome to adopt the Customer Service Code of Excellence, Jill and Peter are passionate about going that extra mile for the customer to ensure you have an amazing experience when visiting the store. “We want you to select your perfect piece and we will be here to help and guide you in your choice,” says Jill Visit visitbroome.com.au/members/ anastasias-of-broome

Apart from the beauty of gemstones, Anastasia’s is also continuing to expand its watch range, supplying the iconic Australian brand Adina, as well as many other well-known brand names such as Citizen, Casio, and Baby G. As a family-owned and operated business, Jill and Peter have bought their own unique flair to the Anastasia’s brand and have introduced into Broome their own internationally trademarked “Lust” pearl jewellery. It is their unique fusion of brilliant cut diamonds into the pearls — thus combining two of nature’s wonders into a single cohesive whole. This range is known as Lust Pearls™.

Inspired by Broome Admire artworks with a deep connection to the land at Black Stump Gallery.

B

lack Stump is a contemporary gallery dedicated to showcasing unique and beautiful artworks inspired by Broome and the Kimberley. Owners Simon and Emma share a genuine love for the region and its sense of adventure. Their journey began back in 2001, when they travelled north on a camping trip in their old ute—and they couldn’t stay away. They were completely captivated by the experience of driving the Gibb River Road to Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu. The remoteness, scale, and striking landscapes left a lasting impression, as did the suspension of the old HJ47 Land Cruiser. The Kimberley continues to be the inspiration behind everything the gallery presents. More recently, exploring the Buccaneer Archipelago by boat has added an entirely new perspective—truly reinforcing why this extraordinary region attracts so many creative people.

Located in Old Broome, Black Stump presents a wide range of works across various media, featuring locally inspired Australian-made art and gifts. Visitors will also find standout pieces such as unique Broome-inspired jewellery and sculpture. Above all, the artworks are original and characterised by a deep connection to the land and its natural beauty. The gallery brings together select artists offering their own interpretations of this captivating part of Australia. Highlights include an exceptional selection of WA artists such as Judy Prosser, Douglas Kirsop and Leon Pericles and many more notable artists. Black Stump is also proud to regularly feature Warmun Art Centre. In addition, Black Stump hosts fabulous exhibition nights throughout the year— so make sure you join our mailing list to receive details and previews.

We invite you to visit Black Stump Gallery and discover a piece of the Kimberley that speaks to you. We look forward to welcoming you. Visit visitbroome.com.au/members/blackstump-gallery-1

Hidden Valley Broome We make unique handcrafted natural soaps, candles, skin care products and gifts inspired by beautiful Broome and the wild Kimberley region beyond.

T

hirty years ago, our story began with a profound transformation. To find a path back to health and purpose, our founder, Ali, spent her days walking the quiet tracks through Hidden Valley toward the shores of Cable Beach. It was in this raw, natural beauty that her senses "woke up." She discovered the healing power of pure plant essential oils and felt a deep calling to capture the essence of the Kimberley to share with the world. In 1995, with a simple goal to master the craft of traditional, start-from-scratch vegetable soaps, Hidden Valley was born with the support from Ali’s partner Smokey and a small start-up gift from her father. The goal was simple but dedicated: to master one thing really well. Ali wanted to create a product that was honest, ethical, and rooted in the environment that had healed her.

What started as an individual quest for healing has since blossomed into a dedicated team of powerful woman who carry that same vision forward today. OUR PRODUCTS While our soaps remain the heart of our story, our collective expertise has allowed us to expand into a full range of skin and body care tailored to our unique tropical climate. Every product we create, from our nourishing creams to our renowned Midgie Magic, is a collaborative effort born from a love for plant-based ingredients and a need for repellent. Quality remains a personal promise. Ali’s own hypersensitive skin continues to be our benchmark: if it isn’t gentle enough for her, our team won't let it leave the “Luscious Ladies Lab”. Our soapmakers work in harmony,

Whether you visit us at our shop at 2 Harriet Road, Bilingurr in the Blue Haze sanctuary or at The Saturday Courthouse Markets, we invite you to meet the faces behind the craft and take a piece of Broome’s quiet, healing energy home with you. Timeless DESIGNS Lush Designs has blossomed from a small market stall back in 2006, to an iconic jewellery designer producing precious, timeless pieces.

O

riginally a veterinarian, Julie Nicholas arrived in Broome in 2000, in search of something spectacular. Julie fell in love with the stunning Kimberley landscape and spent her first year on the ocean exploring the Kimberley and its northern coastline. It was spending time appreciating the ocean that brought on her fascination and admiration for its precious, natural gemstone, the saltwater pearl. Delving into the world of jewellery design, Julie quickly progressed from showcasing her pieces at a small table at the Broome. Courthouse in 2006 to annually attracting a flock of tourists to view the new designs for the year at her established business, Lush Designs.

Julie focuses on designing timeless jewellery pieces with modern bohemian inspiration, sourcing pearls and gemstones from around the world. Larimar and pearls have been used extensively in this year’s designs reflecting the stunning blue ocean colours and white sand of Broome. Lush Designs’ first flagship boutique is open seven days a week right in the heart of Chinatown, next door to the original Sun Pictures. There is also a second larger boutique now open in the heart of Cottesloe on Napoleon Street. Both stores are definitely worth a visit and will not disappoint. A Crocodile Legacy In memory of the legend Malcolm Douglas, his awe-inspiring crocodile park lives on sharing captivating experiences.

I

n 1964, 23-year-old Malcolm Douglas and his friend David Oldmeadow left their jobs as stock and station agents in New South Wales and set off on a sixmonth journey around Australia. Before they knew it, six months had escalated to four years and left quite the impression on Malcolm, shaping his future to come.

something accessible for travellers to Cable Beach — the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Opening with six large crocodiles, over the decades to follow the park grew and became an internationally renowned tourist attraction and home to some of the biggest beasts from the Kimberley’s waterways.

Along their journey, the duo filmed their outback adventures, which was later used to produce their inspiring documentary, Across the Top, reaching recordbreaking ratings for Australian television. Bursting with talent and a taste for adventure, Malcolm went on to become a conservationist and rescuer, as well as produce more than 50 documentaries and films for Channel Seven and Channel Nine.

Fast forward to 2007, the Douglases moved from their Cable Beach location, out onto the Broome Highway 15 minutes out of town where it resides today.

Trike Touring Take a tour on the back of Roger Hockey’s trike and you’ll see the town from a whole new perspective.

V

The trikes are a novel and exhilarating way of experiencing Broome. There are no glass windows or steel separating the view from the outer surrounds, and the life and breath of Broome whistle in the wind.

Roger is guiding me around the Broome Peninsula on a Broome Trike Tour. He’s driving a Harley Davidson hybrid, customised to carry three passengers. The third wheel adds a degree of stability and safety to an electrifying mode of transport.

Slowing up to enter a bustling Chinatown, Roger launches into a recital of old Broome’s colourful history. Roger is well-versed in the town’s historical and cultural knowledge, and sprinkles quirky anecdotes and jokes – some inappropriate for publication – amongst well researched fact.

vvvvrumph. 2000ccs of SCAT motor roars out of the Broome Visitor’s Centre car park and out onto Hamersley Street. A cool breeze whips beneath my helmet. Roger Hockey is in the driver’s seat of this custom-built trike, and he glides around the corner and down to Chinatown.

We exit the roundabout and turn onto Carnarvon Street. Roger shifts down a gear and accelerates out of the corner. To his amusement, I reach for one of three hand rails running along the edges of the trike’s cushioned rear end.

“See that Thai restaurant there, that was once the biggest brothel in Broome,” he says.

“See those,” Roger says.

An eccentric businessman, Roger relocated from Perth to Broome in 1999 following a failed ostrich farming venture. He drove a selfbuilt trike nearly 2,500km and after acquainting himself with the history of Broome, launched the first Trike Tour 27 years ago.

“They’re nicknamed the ‘oh shit’ bars. Just quietly, these trikes do awesome wheel stands too.”

“Still today, the ladies do a wonderful job of servicing their clientele . . . with delicious Thai food!”

Since then, Broome Trike Tours have traversed over half a million kilometres. Maintaining the trikes is no easy feat, and Roger’s been through five engines, three gearboxes, and relicensed unapproved modification on a limo trike – an eight seat motor coach kitted with a jarrah bar, champagne cooler, and surround sound stereo system – which is now back on the road. We breeze past the old boat building sheds – a relic of past prosperity – and head around the corner, past the homesteads of the old white pearling masters; Broome’s only Aboriginal community; and the ancient shell middens on Kennedy Hill. Roger effortlessly navigates around all the roundabouts. Riding motorcycles is second nature for Roger; he grew up on a property in Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island, and for as long as he can remember he’s been surrounded by motorcycles. “I reckon I was conceived on a bike,” he says. “I grew up on 10 acres; my dad had a bike and we used to rip around the 10 acres. I bought my first bike when I got my licence at 16, and I’ve had a bike ever since. I’ve had 20 bikes over the years and I’m now into my fourth trike.” Two hours after we set out, Roger concludes the tour beneath a shady boab back from Gantheaume Beach. He wanders around to the back end of the trike, lifts up a lid, and pulls a mysterious box from the rear cavity. Inside the box are four bush tucker liqueurs. Each is made from a native tree – boab, white currant, gubinge, rosella – and distilled by Roger in his own backyard. Aside from the Broome Peninsula Tour, Broome Trike Tours operate numerous other sightseeing tours. You can wine and dine at the croc park; learn about bush tucker from native trees; or take a sunset tour of Coconut Wells, and he guarantees me each tour is as eccentric and unpredictable as the next.
