2013 Christmas Wish Book

k o o B h is W s a tm s ri h C 3 1 20 We hope this catalog finds you well and getting ready for or having had an incredible Christmas. 2014 brings our family’s 99th year of producing purebred swine breeding stock. I started to write a summary of the major happenings on the pig side of things and it quickly became clear that I could fill 2 pages and still have to leave out many incredible experiences. So I will just summarize by saying THANK YOU to all who purchased or exhibited showpigs, breeding stock, or semen from PBG. When we started the stud, we debated whether or not to put a “Winners” page up as we thought it would look very bad to have an empty page sitting there for a year or 2.

We are thrilled that did not turn out to be the case and we know that is all because of great customers, settling great females, and getting the prospects in the hands of great showman who are willing to work their tails off to succeed. If any one of those elements is not present – the results will usually fall short of the goal. We understand the financial commitment in every purchase but more than that the commitment of time and the opportunity to make memories with your friends and family that goes with each purchase.

On the family side of things it has been a blessed year of many changes and many life-lasting memories. The opportunity to work with my family on a daily is an opportunity I do not take for granted and motivates us every day. Being asked to be featured in the Seedstock Edge and being on the cover was certainly a gratifying and humbling experience..

The year also brought the passing of my Dad who passed away in October after complications from a fall. A huge thank you to all for your support after his passing. We know now more than ever before that the showpig community is a FAMILY with deep roots and big hearts. If you knew my dad you know he loved and was very proud of Premium Blend and was around often and called often to get updates on semen sales, wins, boar buys and inside scoop on what might be coming up. There is a definite emptiness that will be slow to leave and is especially felt after a big win or major purchase waiting for his call to get the news. I spoke at my Dad’s funeral and would like to share my summary of how I saw my Dad live his life.

Bill Laird was a good man, who had many friends, helped others often, loved and was very proud of his family, adored his wife, and loved and served the Lord.

We will continue to work hard every day to offer the most elite showpig genetics possible and to try to treat every customer a little better than we would expect to be treated.

We wish you all a safe and memory-filled 2014 that brings fulfillment of your showpig dreams.

When we introduced Superman last year we stated - "We believed we were now being handed the best Berkshire we had ever seen – period – no debate – no question – not a close second" Superman has obviously done his part to back that claim up and we LOVE Superman as he got the ball rolling for us. But when we were handed Big Gulp, we think we just moved to a whole new level. Massive boned and massive chest and reaches out and just grabs the ground like his big brother but does it with a freakier front end that explodes out of his blade.

Superman & Dark Knight’s Littermates went 1st & 5th in gilts & 6th in barrows & San Antonio. We are grateful to the Jones and Bennett Families for letting Big Gulp and his littermate Dark Knight join their brother at Premium Blend.

Big Gulp’s babies so far are some of the best we have started. - If you liked Superman, We are getting more and more confident his brothers & sons are going to carry on his legacy.

Heat Stroke was a February boar we did not do justice to in the hustle to get the stud started.

We did him a disservice by not showing him at the open house but those that saw him later loved him and used him on some really good females. The most massive Berkshire we offer with a tail set and set to his rear two that is ideal AND it is all wrapped up in a perfectly marked jet-black package.

As we have discussed elsewhere, most of the boars in stud have some great females behind them and he has our best 2 Berkshire sows directly behind him on the bottom side – Hattie – Grand Gilt 2010 InSF & Miss Hathaway the 2008 Team Purebred Foundation Female who is the basis for everything in our Berkshire program.

Kentucky Lovin’ x Dead or Alive x What Else's littermate sister from our Mauck bred gilt purchase. Just a mid-February, the bone this one has already is incredible and as you can see from the video he absolutely floats around the yard. May have the best set to his pasterns we have on any boar of any breed. That draws you in and THEN HE TURNS AND WALKS AWAY - and that is when the Oh My #$^**^&%^ comments start. JUST MASSIVE BONED & MONSTER WIDE with his tail head jacked way up in the air and he just walks and walks and walks.

Extension, bone & style wrapped together in an ultra-sound package. Seems like many are looking for that Berkshire boar to add height at the point of the shoulder and a cool / extended front end and we think we have found one that can do that very well. We added TNT recently from Harlan Reid for those same attributes and are thrilled to have him here to join Shotgun Wedding. Both will get a great shot on our best.

If we were asked to draw up what we would want a Berkshire boar to look like - we can absolutely honestly say this is it. Like we have heard over and over on our $35,000 Poland—Perfect Storm — our non-Berkshire breeding visitors tell us they might go buy one just to breed to him. This guy is just flat out a blast to walk in the yard and admire. We believe the Mauck’s have once again created a Berkshire masterpiece and we are thrilled to have him our gallery of Berkshire sires.

First reports on Shotguns are coming in VERY positive and we agree based on what we have seen so far on our sows. Shotgun Wedding & Perfect Storm babies have us very excited as they bring bone and pastern set that we have been working toward in both breeds. Way early on the babies but certainly looks very promising.

SuperFly is the result of legendary genetics thru the mating of Superman (Bar None x Walk The Dog -2011 Houston Champ gilt) on a Gary x Miss Hathaway gilt we sold to Jones & Bennett. So when you have Bar None, Walk the Dog, Gary & Miss H as the grandparents this is what you would expect.

The mother of Superfly was a littermate we sold to Adam Beck and produced their record $7800 weanling gilt , $5100 gilt & $21K litter and that gilt & litter would be full-sibs to Superfly as they were sired by Superman as well. Superfly's littermate gilts went 1-2 & Reserve @ San Angelo and Jones & Bennett have a littermate gilt that we think is very special as well.

SuperFly was very popular in the trailer in Belton and we hope this picture will show you why we are very excited to see what he can do.

We are also hearing reports of awesome Berkshire markings on his babies. The mix of Gary Coleman, Miss Hathaway, Bar None, Walk The Dog & Superman reads like a very powerful combination and it looks like it is heading that way.

Bred by Schmaling Bros Berkshires Purchased from & Owned with Harlan Reid Stress Negative EN 3-4 Reg# 11089004 We were searching for the Berkshire boar to get the front ends up and add extension to go back on the powerful Berkshire females that have been rolling out the last few years. The 1st class of gilts @ WPX was won by Boland’s gilt we thought was way good in those areas. She went on to win 4th Overall Berkshire @ WPX Then we saw her littermate barrow that ended up being 3rd Overall @ WPX and we got real interested in their sire TNT. The gilt then came back a few weeks later to win Champion Berkshire & 3rd Overall @ Team Purebred and sold privately for $8500.

So we approached Mr. Harlan Reid at Springfield about the possibility of working something out on TNT and were able to come to an agreement to bring him to Premium Blend.

TNT continued his great summer with Sheets’ Reserve Barrow @ InSF 4-H. Champion Berkshire Gilt Missouri State Fair Open, Champion Berkshire Barrow Missouri State Fair Open, Reserve Champion Berkshire Gilt Missouri State Fair 4H, Champion Berkshire Gilt Missouri State Fair 4H, & Champion AOB Gilt Kansas State Fair.

Sired 9 State Fair Champion or Reserve Champion Berkshire Barrows in his 2011 crop including the Champion Berk barrow at Wisconsin that Warren Beeler said was the best he had seen! Torge’s track record of winning shows is unrivaled and we are thrilled to have him here at PBG. We loved him and his littermate sister at NBS and were not surprised that he accomplished what he did in his first full season.

When we picked him up from Bryce this summer, it was even more obvious to us why he has been so successful.

He is massive boned, extremely sound, and very tall at the point of his shoulder. We think this guy can continue his dominance in siring better Berkshires for many years to come! The buyers list of Torge semen is a who’s who of the Berkshire breed as they recognize the very unique things Torge offers.

We think Torge offers another very good option on Superman daughters. Shelbi Gordon exhibited an OYE Class-winning gilt bred by the Gordon’s with Superman on a Torge daughter and confirmed what we thought that mating could produce.

One of our prime objectives this summer was to bring a GREAT Duroc to PBG. We had heard reports and saw videos of lots of really good red ones heading to WPX and the show did not disappoint in our opinion and wise guy was one of the key reasons we thought the show was stout. It took $30,000 to get it done but we were thrilled to be able to load WISE GUY onto the trailer and bring him home. We think he has all the tools to have a major impact in the Duroc breed.

WISE GUY draws you in with his powerful but extended head and neck and how he explodes into a massive rib and ripped top and stifle in a very sound and functional package. Then he turns to come at you and he absolutely blows you away with an incredible chest floor that runs perfectly true all the way to the ground with toes dead square at every corner.

Simply put, we think he combines power, style and correctness that few have done and makes him an extremely unique breeding piece to produce winning showstock that will have the longevity to improve the Duroc breed for several generations.

We have always admired the WD Swine program and have been looking for the right “WATJE

BLUE” boar to come to PBG. We think we have found that boar in B.B. KING! Not only does he bring the trademark look, design, and balance that the W-D firm is known for—but he has added mass, bone, and power that we think sets him apart!!!!

The ultra-attractive blue color scheme is out in full force in this guy making him a unique sire that we highly recommend! Seems like everybody wants at least one “Blue” boar in stud. We didn’t just want any “blue” we wanted a GREAT “blue” boar and we think we found him- B.B .KING – the king of the “BLUES”!

BONE THUG is Bone Collector x Warfare with his grandma being the tremendous Larry Moore Square-Deal pure Yorkshire who is an impressive beast and has been a tremendous generator for the Goss's. As a show gilt she was Supreme Purebred Oklahoma State Fair, Champion York Tulsa, & Class-winner NJSA Southwestern BONE THUG has his daddy's look but is in a more moderate package (note - many comment that Bone Collector himself is more moderate than he appears in pictures and videos). and is built like a cross between a pit-bull and a rhino. One of the frequent questions we get—Where does GunSlinger work? Here is what we see and reported to us as trends so far. Feet and legs are impeccable across the board. Off-spring will be sound as a cat. Color will follow the dam. Pure Yorks tend to be very largely snow white, belts go belted, sows that have red will get calico or red-belts. Babies are immature and very loose in their design. Babies will tend be not shredded early but when you want it you can get it FAST. He will put as monster a channel down a top as any.

Most common trend on where he works - Take him to as much bone and width as you can. He lets great sows do their stuff. We think he is a “breeders” boar. You can see the twinkle in the eye of the guys that saw what he did on their stuff this year as they have a year under their belt to know where to go to really make it fun. We think that if you know how to use him - the aisles will clear when the GunSlingers roll into the show.

Mayhem stunned us when we walked him out after the winter. He looked better than he ever has and many have said he is one of the most impressive mature Hampshire boars they have seen in a long time. Along with the Grand boar at Indiana & Duncan, Cooks showed a littermate barrow that was 2nd in class @ InSF 4-H & the Rule Family showed a Mayhem barrow that was a class-winner @ InSF 4-H and went on to be Reserve Hamp @ NBS. Matt Morehouse also raised another InSF 4-H class-winning barrow. The Lackey family had a great run this summer with their Mayhem gilt who was shown to Champion or Reserve 6 times on the IJSC as well as picking up a Grand Overall title and a 4th Overall title. She ended up being the 3rd Overall Hamp Points gilt.

We think many used Mayhem like we did and shied away from power. We have changed the way we are going with him and are going to take him to power as he will certainly keep the power in them and it looks like he will put incredible wheels under them. Hampshires may be the most challenging breed out there but the reason the stands at Indiana are still packed for the Hampshire show is because when you can put Hampshire boars together like the Cooks did at Indiana and Duncan and like the NAILE Champion shown by Lexi Delaney produced by Keppy’s - there is nothing more fun to watch drive across the ring. We think Mayhem looks to have a real shot to help the Hampshire breed .

We knew from his video he was impeccable in his structure. The way he reaches and grabs the ground on his back two is pretty rare in the Poland breed in our opinion.

What we didn't know from the video was that he would be bringing the massive top and rib that he has.

With the private treaty purchase of Titleist - our negative Dang Good Hog son from the Sandall to add to our Done Deal x Wanda carrier and positive sons Case Closed & Positive Attraction, we had decided we would only be interested in a Poland boar if we found one that was the most monster boned one we had seen.

Well we found the most monster boned and footed one we have ever seen. We have never seen front toes this wide and square on a Poland and not on very many of any breed. Then we see the set to his front and rear pasterns and they are PERFECT. Then we see he is Stress Negative. Then we see him roll down the aisle in an incredibly athletic package. You will rarely see a Poland that reaches and grabs the ground with his rear pasterns like Perfect Storm. Then we see his rib, body & mass. Then we see his awesome top and rump shape.

Then we see he is 3/4 outcross to PSSS Nom Nom Nom and an outcross to the Pretty Good Hog / Dang Good Hog / Done Deal lines and it hit us all as the PERFECT STORM. We have never seen a Poland China that reaches out and grabs the ground with a monster set of rear feet like this guy. You never know but if he hits like we think he will - this could get real fun -real fast. Perfect Storm is converting non-Polandites at a pretty good clip.

First babies have hit here and at customers and reports are consistent - Perfect Storm has a shot to take Polands to a whole new level - and reports on color so far have been very little white - some of the best marked Polands we have had. We have never seen bone and pasterns set like this on our Poland babies.

Long way to 280lbs but we are very excited to see this set grow up.

Our #1 priority heading into the summer was adding a great Yorkshire boar. We weren’t sure where he would pop up but we knew it would very likely take a big number to get him as the demand for Yorkshire semen is pretty stout. The number ended up being $60,000 and we think it will be money very well spent.

Garrett ended up being prime on watching the Yorkshire show for us @ WPX and there was NO doubt what boar he thought we needed. There were several really good Yorkshire options at the show and a couple that we sure would take in a heart-beat as well but when we looked thru them after the show, we all agreed that the Ricker boar was one of the more unique Yorkshires we had seen in quite some time.

Very intriguing in his combination of a powerful yet extended head and neck. Massive in his top and chest and all wrapped up in a very correct structure with a hip design that is nearly perfect in our judgment.
