Liebe Leser Bei jeder Rückkehr ins Engadin überkommt einen stets dieses Gefühl der Einzigartigkeit.

Es gibt nicht viele Orte auf der Welt, die einen immer wieder aufs Neue berühren, inspirieren und gleichermassen faszinieren. Es ist das Licht, die Luft, schlicht die ganze Atmosphäre von St. Moritz, die einen in ihren Bann zieht und glücklicherweise nie mehr loslässt.

Sie in unseren Bann zu ziehen, ist dann auch das Stichwort für unsere aktuelle Ausgabe 22 der bereits legendären Tower Revue. Erneut möchten wir Ihnen durch eindrückliche Bilder und aussergewöhnliche Geschichten zeigen, was das Badrutt’s Palace Hotel von anderen Hotels unterscheidet. So feiert zum Beispiel unser Resident Manager, Angelo Martinelli, in diesem Jahr sein 50-jähriges Jubiläum bei uns. Er kennt nicht nur unser Haus bis in den kleinsten Winkel in- und auswendig, sondern ist vor allem auch mit unseren Gästen, ihren Interessen und Wünschen bestens vertraut.

Das Traditionshotel von 1896 ist auch eine Traumdestination für jede zukünftige Braut und für jeden werdenden Ehemann. Mit einem Augenzwinkern erzählen wir Ihnen in unserer Story über die «Badrutt’s Palace Lizenz zum Heiraten», was das angehende Ehepaar im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel erwartet und warum dies auch der perfekte Ort für jeden Junggesellenabschied ist.

Nicht nur die Geschichten unserer Tower Revue werden Sie in ihren Bann ziehen. Auch unser neuer Hotelfilm erzählt «A Palace Story» einmal auf eine andere Art. Unsere Mitarbeitenden schlüpfen in die Rolle des Gastes und werden zu den eigentlichen Stars des Kurzfilms. Nicht zuletzt auch, um die Wünsche unsere Gäste noch besser zu erfüllen.

Apropos Wünsche: Das neu renovierte 5. Stockwerk im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel garantiert einen Winterurlaub der Extraklasse. Bei der Renovation wurde grosser Wert gelegt auf die Erhaltung der Raumaussage und die damit verbundene Eleganz durch hohe Decken, Stuckaturen an den Decken und Dekorprofilen an den Wänden. Das grösstenteils von heimischen Firmen produzierte Interieur sorgt gemeinsam mit neuesten Technologien für einen unbeschwerten Aufenthalt.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen schon jetzt Neuigkeiten zur Wintersaison 2014/2015 mitteilen zu können: Am Standort des ersten europäischen Indoor-Tennisplatzes von 1913 entsteht unser neues Restaurant. Besonders auffallend wird hier die Einbindung der alten Strukturen der Tennishalle sein, ebenso wie das Glasdach, das den Blick auf den Palace-Turm schweifen lassen wird.

Somit schliesst sich der Kreis zu unserer «Tower Revue» und wir wünschen Ihnen damit viel Vergnügen.

With every return to the Engadin the traveller is overcome by a feeling of uniqueness. There aren’t many places on earth which move, inspire and fascinate people again and again. It’s the light, the air; it’s simply the entire atmosphere of St. Moritz that casts its spell over us – and happily never releases us.

Casting a spell is also the catchword for our 22nd issue of the legendary Tower Revue. Once again, its impressive pictures and extraordinary stories illustrate what makes Badrutt’s Palace Hotel so different. For one of us, this year is a special one. Our Resident Manager, Angelo Martinelli celebrates fifty years of service with us.

In addition to knowing every nook and cranny of the hotel, he is also a veritable mine of information on the interests and wishes of our guests.

Tra il serio e il faceto la nostra Story parla della «Licenza di matrimonio» rilasciata dal Badrutt’s Palace, giusto per darvi un assaggio di quello che il nostro hotel riserva alla coppia di sposi e spiegare perché è anche il luogo ideale per l’addio al celibato.

The stories in our Tower Revue cast one kind of spell while our new hotel film, »A Palace Story«, is a different kind of tale. In this production, our own employees slip into the role of the guests – and thus become the real stars of this short film. In part, the idea is to learn how to fulfil the wishes of our guests even better.

L’incanto non sarà solo quello delle storie della nostra Tower Revue, ma anche del nuovo film «A Palace Story», che offre uno spaccato alternativo della nostra realtà: i nostri dipendenti si calano nel ruolo degli ospiti e diventano le vere e proprie star del cortometraggio, anche con l’obiettivo di soddisfare al meglio i desideri dei nostri ospiti.

And speaking of wishes, the newly renovated fifth floor of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel now ensures that every winter holiday becomes very special indeed. A priority during the renovation was the preservation of the character of the rooms and the elegance they radiate through their high ceilings, the stucco work on the ceilings and the décor profiles on the walls. The new interiors – produced largely by local companies – and the use of state-of-the-art technologies ensure a comfortable and carefree stay.

Durante il restauro è stata riposta molta attenzione alla conservazione degli spazi e della loro eleganza, attraverso soffitti alti con stucchi e pareti con profili decorativi. L’arredamento interno, prodotto prevalentemente da aziende del luogo, e le tecnologie più innovative garantiscono un soggiorno all’insegna del comfort.

And we’re already looking forward to sharing our latest developments for the winter season 2014 / 15 with you: we plan to open our new restaurant on the site of Europe's first indoor tennis court, which dates from 1913. Particularly striking features of the building will be the way it will integrate the structures of the old tennis hall as well as its glass ceiling, which will offer a view of the Palace Tower. And this brings us back to our Tower Revue – we wish you much reading enjoyment!

Weltstars treten im ‹Embassy Ballroom› des legendären Grand Hotels auf – dort, wo einst Marlene Dietrich das Publikum begeisterte.

Bei der «Soirée d’Opéra» im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel am 5. Januar 2014 kommen Opernliebhaber auf ihre Kosten. Mit der Sopranistin Marina Shaguch, dem Tenor Evgeny Akimov, der Mezzosopranistin Elena Maximova und dem Bariton Alexander Gergolav geben vier renommierte Opernsänger des Mariinsky-Theaters in St. Petersburg ein international bekanntes Repertoire an Arien zum Besten. Die hoch-

rangigen Künstler füllten bereits weltbekannte Konzerthallen wie die Carnegie Hall in New York oder La Scala in Mailand und begeisterten im vergangenen Jahr auch das Publikum im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

Im Rahmen der Event-Reihe «In Concert@Badrutt’s Palace» stehen ausserdem am 27. Dezember 2013 und am 22. Februar 2014 zwei Weltstars in St. Moritz auf der Bühne. Zum Ende der Winter­saison werden die Gäste des Traditionshotels am 7. März 2014 mit einem aussergewöhnlichen Cabaret überrascht, das durch atem­beraubende Lichteffekte, abwechslungsreiche Bühnendekoration und anspruchsvolle Tanzeinlagen überzeugt.

DIE B ADRUTT ’ S PALACE – LIZENZ ZUM H EIRATEN Es gibt wohl kaum einen schöneren Ort auf der Welt als das Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, um eine Traumhochzeit wahr werden zu lassen. Die beeindruckende Historie des Hotels bietet wahrscheinlich die beste Grundlage, um einen guten Start für die eigene Geschichte hinzu­ legen. Hier, im Traditionshotel von 1896, fällt es besonders leicht, den grossen Tag zu planen. Ganz unbeschwert kann sich das Brautpaar auf die Feierlichkeiten freuen, denn mit Hilfe der Palace-Hochzeitsplaner ist ihr Fest in den besten Händen. Hat er alle Abteilungen mit Bravour durchlaufen, so wird der zu­ künftige Bräutigam mit seinen Freunden im Rolls-Royce zur Bergbahnstation Muottas Muragl gefahren, wo die Männer auf einen letzten «wilden» Ausflug mit dem Schlitten aufbrechen, bevor die Einfahrt in den sicheren Hafen der Ehe ruft. Nach seinem Umzug nach London vor sechs Jahren nutzte er seine Liebe zur Fotografie, um die klassische Schönheit und die Anmut der Frauen bildlich festzuhalten. Seine Arbeiten erscheinen regelmässig in diversen inter­ nationalen Publikationen. Gabor Szantai findet seine Inspiration bei grossen Legenden wie Irving Penn, Richard Avedon und Helmut Newton. In seiner Freizeit widmet er sich seinen Hobbys Reisen, Lesen und Trail Running.

03 Heini Hofmann, freier Wissenschaftspublizist Heini Hofmann ist ein Tierfreund. Dies zeigt sich schon an seinem ursprünglichen Beruf: Zoo- und Zirkustierarzt. Aus seiner Berufung wurde Beruf und umgekehrt. Seine grosse Erfahrung erwarb er sich während seiner zahlreichen Einsätze an verschiedenen Stationen, vom Zoologischen Garten Basel bis zum Österreichischen National-Circus, aber auch bei seinen Expeditionen und Auslandsaufenthalten. Heute ist Heini Hofmann ein gefragter freier Wissenschaftspublizist, erfolgreicher Autor und beliebter Vortragsreferent. Seine grosse Affinität zum Land der 150 Täler und ganz speziell zum höchstgelegenen, ganzjährig bewohnten Bergtal Engadin stammt von seinem grossen Hobby, dem Bergsteigen. Für die Tower Revue schreibt er seit vielen Jahren zu ausgesuchten Themen.

Heini Hofmann is an animal lover, and this is clear from his original choice of profession: a zoo and circus vet. His profession became his vocation and vice versa. He acquired vast experience from his many assignments in different places, including the Zoological Garden in Basel and the Austrian National Circus, as well as during his expeditions and stays abroad. Today, Heini Hofmann is a soughtafter, independent scientific publicist, successful author and popular speaker. His affinity for the land of 150 valleys and especially for the highest mountain valley of the Engadine, which is inhabited year round, came from his hobby, mountain climbing. He has written about selected topics for the Tower Revue for many years.

Was Eingeborene, Indianer und Trapper noch im Blut haben, ist uns in der modernen Zivilisation abhanden gekommen: die hohe Kunst des Fährtenlesens.

Nur Wildhüter und Jäger lernen dies noch; schauen wir ihnen doch einmal ein wenig über die Schulter.

So wie unsere Schuhe oder Velo– und Autoreifen, so hinterlassen auch die Füsse der Wildtiere beim Fortbewegen Spuren in Schnee, Schlick, Sand oder feuchter Erde. Am augenfälligsten sind solche Tierspuren im Neuschnee. Wer sie zu lesen versteht, dem öffnet sich ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln.

It’s a skill that natives, Indians and trappers learn from their earliest days, but one lost to people in modern civilisation: the high art of tracking. These days, gamekeepers and hunters are the only people who learn it. But that’s a good reason to take a close look at how they work.

Just as our shoes or our bicycle and car tyres leave prints, so too do wild animals leave tracks of their movements in snow, mud, sand or damp earth. These traces are most visible in newly fallen snow.

Il riconoscimento delle orme è un’arte che aborigeni, indiani e trapper hanno nel sangue, ma che nella civiltà moderna è andata pressoché perduta. Soltanto guardiaboschi e cacciatori la imparano ancora; osserviamoli dunque all’opera.

Come le nostre scarpe, le ruote delle bici e delle auto, anche le zampe degli animali selvatici rimangono impresse nella neve, nel fango, nella sabbia o nella terra umida. Le orme più evidenti sono quelle lasciate nella neve fresca. Chi sa riconoscerle può scoprire un mondo straordinario.

Schnüren, Hoppeln und Nageln

Der einzelne Fussabdruck, Trittsiegel genannt, ist für jede Tierart typisch, je nachdem, ob es sich bei Säugetieren um einen Sohlengänger (Pranke des Dachses), einen Zehengänger (Pfote des Fuchses) oder einen Zehenspitzengänger (Hufe des Schalenwildes) handelt. Auch beim Federwild zeigt ein Laufvogel (Zehen des Fasans) ein ganz anderes Trittbild als ein Schwimmvogel (Schwimmhäute der Stockente).

Einzelne Tierarten weisen zudem ganz speziell typische Spurbilder auf. Ein solches ist beispielsweise das Schnüren (ruhiges Traben) des Raubwildes, besonders ausgeprägt beim Fuchs, wenn er die Tritte der Vorder- und Hinterläufe sowohl genau ineinander als auch – ohne jegliche Schränkung – schnurgerade hintereinander setzt, wodurch das Spurbild einer Perlenschnur gleicht.

Die sich in der Fortbewegung aneinander reihenden Trittsiegel formen die Fährte oder Spur. Stammen die Tritte von Schalenwild, das heisst von Hirsch-, Reh-, Stein- und Gamswild oder auch vom Schwarzwild (Wildschweine), spricht der Fachmann von einer Fährte. Alle andern Trittbilder, wie zum Beispiel von Hasen und Eichhörnchen oder von Raubwild wie Marder, Fuchs und Dachs, heissen Spur. Beim Federwild wiederum spricht man – im Gegensatz zu Fährte und Spur beim Haarwild – von Geläufe.

Ganz anders bei den Hasen: Weil sie sich nur in zwei – zudem sehr ähnlichen – Gangarten bewegen, hoppelnd oder flüchtend, zeigen sie eine ganz andere Spur, nämlich den so genannten Hasensprung. Dabei treten sie mit den hinteren nicht in die Tritte der vorderen Gliedmassen, sondern setzen die viel längeren Hinterläufe paarweise vor die kürzeren Vorderläufe. Analog verhält es sich beim Eichhörnchen.

Und was sich da alles herauslesen lässt! Ein Trittsiegel kann nicht nur die Tierart erkennen lassen, sondern auch etwas über das Geschlecht und das Alter des Individuums aussagen. Neben der Fortbewegungsrichtung lässt sich zudem auf die Gangart schliessen, ob das Tier gemächlich dahinzog, eilig trabte oder sich gar auf der Flucht befand.

Auch die Marder bewegen sich hüpfend fort, setzen jedoch die Tritte der Vorder- in die der Hinterläufe, wodurch in der Spurabfolge nur zwei paarweise nebeneinander stehende Trittsiegel erscheinen, weshalb man dies als Paarsprung bezeichnet. Eine weitere Besonder­heit ist das Nageln, typisch beim Dachs, wenn sich vor allem die kräftigen Grabekrallen an den Vorderpranken vor den Zehenballen abbilden und dadurch eine genagelte Spur hinterlassen.

Ziehen, Trollen und Flüchten

Je nach Bewegungsart schränkt das Wild mehr oder weniger, das heisst die Tritte der rechten und linken Läufe werden – entsprechend der Körperbreite – seitlich einer gedachten Mittellinie gesetzt. Dieser Zwischenraum zwischen linken und rechten Tritten heisst Schrank (Schränken), während der Längsabstand der einzelnen Fussab­d rücke die Schrittlänge aufzeigt.

Tierspuren und Tierfährten im Schnee sind ein faszinierendes Phänomen, sozusagen die stumme Zeichensprache einer belebten Natur.

Sie sind indirekte Zeugnisse von Wildtieren auf Nahrungssuche oder beim Knüpfen sozialer Kontakte. Wenn aber, was leider vermehrt der Fall ist, Fluchtspuren dominieren, dann gibt dies zu Besorgnis Anlass.

Beim gemächlichen Ziehen und beim rascheren Traben oder Trollen fusst das Schalenwild mit den Hinterläufen mehr oder weniger genau in die Tritte der Vorderläufe, sodass ein solches Trittsiegel effektiv aus zwei übereinanderliegenden Tritten besteht, nämlich dem Hinter- über dem Vorderlaufabdruck.

Beim Flüchten dagegen, das einem Galopp gleichkommt, erfolgt die Fortbewegung sprungartig von den abstossenden Hinterauf die Vorderläufe, wobei die hinteren die vorderen überfliegen, sodass die Ersteren vor die Letzteren gestellt werden, und zwar umso weiter, je rascher die Flucht.

Denn trotz zum Teil genialer Überlebensstrategien der Wildtiere bedeutet der Winter, zumal in den Bergen, für sie eine Gratwan­ de­r ung zwischen Leben und Tod. Jede zusätzliche Störung – zum Beispiel durch Wintersportler abseits von Pisten und Loipen – veranlasst die am energetischen Existenzminimum lebenden Tiere zu unnötigen Verausgabungen, die deren Leben aufs Spiel setzen können.

Nehmen wir daher beim Wintersport Rücksicht auf die Wildtiere und lassen wir sie – vor allem im Bergwinter – in ihren Einständen ruhen und stören wir ihre Sozialgefüge nicht; freuen wir uns vielmehr an Fährten und Spuren in gemächlichen Gangarten, frei von Angst, Flucht und vielleicht tödlichem Stress.

T racks , traces , and trails Every type of animal has a unique footprint, depending, for example, on whether a mammal walks on the sole of its foot (e.g. a badger), the toes or paw (e.g. a fox), or the hoof (i.e., cloven-hoofed game such as deer). Game birds too, have different tracks: a ratite or flightless bird (e.g. pheasant) has feet that leave very different traces than the webbing of water fowl, such as a Mallard.

A line of footprints made when the animal moves forms its track. Large animal tracks are often from cloven-hoofed game, such as deer, ibex or chamois (goats) or wild boar.

Smaller animal tracks are from ground game such as hares or squirrels or predators such as martens, foxes or badgers, or, of course, from birds.

And there’s a lot you can discover from reading tracks: a footprint can reveal not just the type of animal but also something about its sex and age. You can determine the direction of travel as well as the animal’s pace – that is, whether it was moving at a comfortable speed, trotting briskly, or even fleeing from danger.

W alking , loping , fleeing Depending on their gait, game animals leave tracks with the right and left feet to the sides of an imaginary centre line in proportion to the animal’s body width. The distance between the individual footprints reveals the length of the animal’s stride.

When walking leisurely and when trotting or loping, cloven-hoofed game move so that their back hooves land in the prints just made by their front hooves. Thus their footprint actually consists of two prints – the back hooves on top of the front hooves.

In contrast, when in flight their movements resemble a gallop. The back legs push off and the animal leaps, landing on its front hooves.

Then the back legs swing forward and the hooves strike the ground in front of the front legs. The faster the animal runs, the greater the distance at this point between the back legs and front legs.

Some animals have very distinctive gaits.

One example of this is the track left by predators at a calm trot. This is especially noticeable with foxes, which set their front and back paws not just on top of each other, but also in a single line, without any distance between the right and left sides. This leaves a track which looks like a string of pearls.

Ogni specie animale lascia un’impronta tipica, detta anche orma: nei mammiferi ad esempio si distingue tra plantigradi (zampa del tasso), digitigradi (zampa della volpe) e ungulati (zoccolo di cervidi e cinghiali).

Anche negli uccelli le impronte dei galliformi (zampe del fagiano) si distinguono nettamente da quelle dei palmipedi (zampe palmate del germano reale).

Hares are very different. Because they have only two gaits – bounding or galloping – and those two are very similar, they leave quite a different track when they leap. Their back paws don’t land in the prints left by the front paws. Instead, the much longer back paws land as a pair in front of the shorter front paws. The squirrel is much the same.

Martens also move by bounding, but they place their back paws in the prints left by their front paws, leaving a footprint that suggests a single pair of paws. Another special track is typically left by badgers: they have strong claws on their front paws to use when digging and these leave an imprint directly in front of the ball of the toe.

L’insieme di orme lasciate dal passaggio di un animale formano la traccia. Gli esperti distinguono tre categorie di tracce: le piste degli ungulati, ossia cervi, stambecchi, camosci alpini o suini selvatici (cinghiali), le orme impresse dalla selvaggina pennuta e le tracce lasciate dai predatori quali martore, volpi e tassi e dagli altri animali, come lepri e scoiattoli.

Ben diversa è invece la traccia lasciata dalle lepri, che procedono con due andature molto simili sia nel balzo sia nella fuga: esse non posano le zampe posteriori nelle impronte di quelle anteriori, bensì appoggiando i lunghi arti posteriori in posizione parallela davanti a quelli anteriori più corti. Anche lo scoiattolo presenta un’andatura analoga.

Le martore invece, pur muovendosi a balzi, appoggiano le zampe posteriori nelle impronte di quelle anteriori, formando una traccia composta da coppie di orme parallele.

Un’altra impronta molto particolare è quella del tasso, riconoscibile per le robuste unghie scavatrici, soprattutto delle zampe anteriori, impresse nel terreno davanti ai cuscinetti carpali.

Animal tracks in the snow are a fascinating phenomenon – vibrant nature’s silent sign language. They are indirect evidence of wild animals foraging or hunting for food or making social contact with each other. However, there is good reason for concern when tracks of animals in flight predominate – which is unfortunately more and more often the case.

A seconda del tipo di andatura, la distanza fra le orme delle zampe di destra e quelle di sinistra, può essere più o meno ridotta rispetto alla linea mediana immaginaria del corpo. Questo spazio tra impronte sinistre e destre viene detto scarto, mentre la distanza longitudinale delle singole orme indica il passo.

Le tracce degli animali sulla neve sono un fenomeno affascinante, una specie di linguaggio dei segni della natura. Sono testimonianze indirette di animali selvatici in cerca di cibo o in fase di socializzazione. In spite of their often clever survival strategies, winter means a fine line between life and death for wild animals, especially in the mountains. Every additional disturbance – e.g. through winter sports enthusiasts travelling off-slope or outside the crosscountry trails – causes unnecessary expenditure of energy for animals who are already functioning on a minimum of energy and thus puts their lives at risk.

The project was realised by the film agency element p based in Biel/ Bienne, which has already won awards for its work, including the Golden Dolphin at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards in 2010 and 2012. »A Palace Story« can be viewed on the hotel’s website, on all guest room televisions and on the official YouTube channel of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

Für Angelo Martinelli sind Gästewünsche dieser Art nichts Ausser­ gewöhnliches. Im Dezember 2013 feiert der Resident Manager sein 50-Jahr-Jubiläum im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. Häufig wird er gefragt, wieso er sich mit 69 Jahren noch nicht den Ruhestand gönnt. Seine Antwort fällt gelassen aus: «Warum soll ich denn aufhören? Das Hotel ist meine Familie!» Wer Martinelli kennt, weiss, dass er seiner Arbeit mit Leib und Seele nachgeht. Wer Stammgast ist, wird den zurückhaltenden Italiener immer wieder in einem der hoteleigenen Restaurants antreffen – insbesondere der ‹Chesa Veglia›, wo er von 1992 bis 2001 das Regiment führte. Hier begrüsst er noch heute mit Freude die mittlerweile erwachsenen Gäste, die er teilweise schon seit ihrer Kindheit kennt. Angelo Martinelli gilt im Hotel als das wandelnde Lexikon der Gästevorlieben und hat diese auf seinem ganz individuellen «Memory-Stick» gespeichert: in seinem Gedächtnis. Im Winter 1963/1964 begann Martinellis Laufbahn im ‹Corviglia Club Chesa Veglia› als Commis de Rang, bevor er während des Sommers 1964 als Commis de Bar im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel verschiedenste Eindrücke gewann. In den darauffolgenden Sommersaisons sammelte er internationale Erfahrung in renommierten Häusern wie dem Bayerischen Hof in München, dem Dorchester Hotel in London und dem Maxim’s in Paris, während er die Wintermonate stets in St. Moritz verbrachte.

Mitarbeiter kamen und gingen – Angelo Martinelli blieb bis heute und gilt mit 50 Jahren Betriebszugehörigkeit als «Legende» des Hotels.

These days he often hears the question of why, at 69, he hasn’t retired. His unruffled answer: »Why should I? Regular guests often see the reticent Martinelli, who is Italian by birth, at one of the hotel’s own restaurants – especially ›Chesa Veglia‹, where he held the reins from 1992 to 2001. Some of the guests he still greets so warmly here are adults he has known since their childhoods. At Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, Angelo Martinelli is considered a walking encyclopaedia of guests’ preferences and wishes. He has them all stored in his own personal »memory stick« – his brain. Martinelli’s career at the hotel began in the winter of 1963/64 at the »Corviglia Club Chesa Veglia«, as Commis de Rang. From there he moved in summer 1964 to tend the bar at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, the source of many interesting moments and impressions. The following summer seasons saw him gaining international experience in a number of well-known establishments, including the Bayerischer Hof in Munich, the Dorchester Hotel in London and Maxim’s in Paris. However, Martinelli always spent the winter months in St. Moritz. Other employees came and went, but Angelo Martinelli stayed, and today, with fifty years of service to the hotel, he is regarded as a kind of legend.

It is precisely this spirit, this passion for Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, which »A Palace Story« is intended to illustrate. It is a hotel film which shows not just the »hardware«; instead, it spotlights the employees, the hotel’s »software«. After all, it is people who actually write the hotel’s history, which dates back to 1896. It is the team which makes unique experiences possible – such as the elephant which was admitted to the hotel through the main entrance to fulfil the wish of a guest. Guests who are new to the hotel see events like these as fantasy, but the hotel’s regular guests recognise them as the kind of service Badrutt’s Palace Hotel offers. risponde: «Perché dovrei? L’hotel è la mia famiglia!». Martinelli – lo sa bene chi lo conosce – si dedica al proprio lavoro con anima e corpo. I clienti abituali quindi continueranno a incontrare il discreto italiano in uno dei ristoranti di proprietà dell’hotel, precisamente il Chesa Veglia, da lui diretto tra il 1992 e il 2001. Qui, ancora oggi, Martinelli è felice di ricevere, dopo anni, ospiti che conosce fin da quando erano bambini. Lui si ricorda di tutti, ha tutto impresso nella sua infallibile memoria ed è quasi un’enciclopedia vivente dell’albergo.

La sua carriera comincia nell’inverno del 1963 al Corviglia Club del Chesa Veglia, dove è Commis de Rang. Nell’estate del 1964 è Commis de Bar al Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, dove perfeziona le proprie competenze. Nell’estate successiva matura un’esperienza internazionale lavorando presso rinomate strutture ricettive quali il Bayerischer Hof a Monaco, l’hotel Dorchester a Londra e il ristorante Maxim’s a Parigi, per poi tornare a trascorrere i mesi invernali a St. Moritz.

Nel corso degli anni, l’hotel ha visto avvicendarsi tanti dipendenti.

Angelo Martinelli invece è rimasto fino a oggi e, in virtù dei suoi cinquant’anni di servizio, è considerato una vera e propria leggenda.

La «Palace Story» Molto Speciale Di Angelo Martinelli Il 29 giugno 2013, nell’ambito di una prima cinematografica, il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel ha inaugurato la stagione estiva presentando «A Palace Story», un innovativo film di propria produzione. Il personale dello storico albergo si è calato nei panni dei propri ospiti più esigenti, trasformandosi così nel vero protagonista del cortometraggio. Il progetto è stato realizzato dall’agenzia cinematografica element p di Bienne che, tra l’altro, è stata premiata con il «Delfino d’Oro» al Cannes Corporate Media & TV Award nel 2010 e poi di nuovo nel 2012. «A Palace Story» è disponibile sul sito web dell’hotel, su tutti gli apparecchi televisivi delle stanze dell’albergo e anche sul canale ufficiale YouTube del Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

Daniel Reichenbach, con la sua regia, regala a chi soggiorna presso l’albergo un cortometraggio di prim’ordine. La trama: Tiziana Tessaro, la governante, affida ad alcuni dipendenti un incarico molto particolare, cioè essere clienti per un giorno, lasciando ai colleghi il compito di rendere possibile l’impossibile. Un esclusivo picnic sulle sponde del lago Stazersee rischia di mettere a dura prova le cucine del Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, nel momento in cui viene ordinato il soufflé.

Ma non a caso i dipendenti dell’hotel vivono orgogliosamente secondo il motto «nothing is too big for us» («per noi niente è impossibile») e lo spettatore del cortometraggio, con una tensione crescente, assiste all’inevitabile superamento della prova, dall’attenta preparazione del dolce fino al suo trasporto al lago in elicottero.

Ed è proprio questo entusiasmo, questa passione che anima tutti quanti lavorano al Badrutt’s Palace Hotel e che «A Palace Story» vuole mettere in luce. Il film mostra sì l’«hardware», ma mette in primo piano il «software», i dipendenti. Dopotutto sono loro, le persone, a scrivere la vera storia di questo albergo storico, risalente al 1896. È il personale che rende possibili esperienze uniche. Una volta, per esempio, un cliente ha chiesto – e ottenuto – che un elefante fosse introdotto dall’entrata principale! Se i nuovi ospiti vedono episodi di questo genere come qualcosa di stravagante, i clienti abituali vi riconoscono l’attenta cultura del servizio che da sempre contraddistingue il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. Cultura che il motto «per noi niente è impossibile» riassume perfettamente.

Per Angelo Martinelli richieste di questo tipo da parte degli ospiti dell’albergo non sono affatto insolite visto che, a dicembre 2013, il Resident Manager festeggerà i suoi cinquant’anni di servizio presso il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. A tutti quelli che gli domandano la ragione per cui, all’età di 69 anni, non si sia ancora concesso la pensione, 36

This former seventeenth-century farmhouse is considered to be the oldest in St. Moritz. Today it is home to a restaurant operation run by Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. ›Chesa Veglia‹ comprises three restaurants and two bars.

Vor 60 Jahren begann die Karriere des Diamantenhändlers Laurence Graff. Zur Feier dieses Jubiläums und des weltweiten Erfolgs der Marke Graff präsentiert Graff Diamonds eine Neu­ auflage seines berühmten «Hair & Jewel»-Konzepts.

The re-creation of Hair & Jewel features 22 extremely rare and unique jewels with a value of half a billion dollars.

In 1970, world renowned diamantaire Laurence Graff OBE created Hair & Jewel, an ornate coiffure comprising one million dollars of diamonds and precious gems. It captivated audiences from around the globe, creating an interest and excitement for the jewellery crafted by Graff Diamonds, which continues to this day. To celebrate Laurence Graff’s 60th anniversary working in the jewellery industry and to mark the success of Graff Diamonds globally, Hair & Jewel has been recreated. Featuring 22 extremely rare and unique jewellery pieces it showcases Graff’s renowned expertise for creating the most fabulous jewels in the world. Incorporated into the recreation are a number of record breaking diamonds that have been cut and polished by Graff, namely the Graff Sweethearts a magnificent pair of earrings featuring 51.53 ct and 50.76 ct D colour Flawless type IIA heart shape diamonds and a selection of jewellery crafted from the 550 ct Letšeng Star, the 14th largest white rough diamond ever discovered. Other pieces showcased include an exceptionally rare 10.47 ct Fancy Vivid Blue Internally Flawless briolette diamond pendant, a stunning 52.73 ct Fancy Vivid Yellow emerald cut diamond ring, a 6.51 ct Fancy Intense Pink Internally Flawless oval cut diamond ring and other one of a kind jewels designed and created at Graff’s Headquarters in London. Commenting on the original creation of Hair & Jewel in 1970, Laurence Graff said: »At that time, this was a highly original concept which captured the attention of the world’s media and was seen in newspapers and magazines around the globe. Until this time, images showing fine jewellery were typically modelled in a more conservative style. This image broke the mould by using a younger model and created the idea of diamonds being aspirational to younger women.« It is more than 40 years since the original image of Hair & Jewel was captured. The recreation marks an important milestone in Graff Diamonds’ history and coincides with the opening of its 40th store globally. Mr Graff continued: »Hair & Jewel is a celebration of our expertise and success, as we continue to operate at the very pinnacle of the industry. The experience starts off with white peppery notes, joined by typical Nicaraguan stimulation at the back of the palate. In the second third, the cigar starts changing, growing milder, alongside the appearance of an enjoyable sweetness. The aroma becomes milder, and flavours of roasted coffee beans and dark, bitter chocolate make themselves known. The cigar develops a creaminess at the end of the second third. During the last third, the cigar keeps building on the second third, delivering growing excitement and balance, thus becoming the kind of experience that only Davidoff can create. And the new writing function makes it child’s play to write or sketch on the display exactly as you would on an ordinary paper notepad.

Quasi zum Beweis hat Visual Artist Archan Nair eines seiner MixedMedia-Kunstwerke nur auf dem Xperia Z Ultra angefertigt. Der Künstler aus Neu Delhi, Indien, hat sich mit Freude auf diese Aufgabe gestürzt und binnen weniger Tage ein Bild gemalt, das so farbenfroh ist wie seine Heimatstadt. «Das Bild spiegelt unsere Vernetzung mit­ einander, mit der Natur und allem um uns herum wider. Jeder Vorgang beeinflusst jeden anderen wie eine endlose Kettenreaktion, daher der Name ‹Velvet Ripple› (sanfte Wellen)», beschreibt Archan Nair sein Kunstwerk. «Ich liebe es, zu zeichnen, mich selbst auszudrücken und dabei mit Farben, Bildern und Techniken zu experimentieren. In diesem Fall habe ich mit der auf dem Xperia Z Ultra vor­i nstallierten Skizzen-App von Sony begonnen und dann für die etwas anspruchsvolleren Details die Android App SketchBook Pro heruntergeladen. Dazu noch mein Lieblingsbleistift, und ich hatte alles, was ich zum Zeichnen brauche.» Um auch winzige Details festzu­halten und die Farbenpracht der Bilder richtig geniessen zu können, verfügt das Xperia Z Ultra über ein extragrosses Full-HDDisplay (1920 × 1080p, 342 ppi) mit einer Diagonale von 16,3 cm (6,4″). Der Triluminos-Bildschirm mit der neuen X-Reality Engine für Smartphones sorgt für brillante Farben, und das OptiContrast-Panel ermöglicht auch bei direktem Sonnenlicht noch einen klaren Blick auf den Bildschirm. As proof of this, visual artist Archan Nair created one of his mixedmedia artworks exclusively on the Xperia Z Ultra. This artist from New Delhi, India, eagerly accepted the task. Within a few days’ time, he had created a picture that’s every bit as colourful as his home city. »This picture reflects the network that connects us with one another, with nature, and with everything that surrounds us. Each event influences every other like an endless chain reaction. That’s why I named this picture ›Velvet Ripple,‹« says Archan Nair about his artwork. »I love to sketch, to express myself and to experiment with colours, images and techniques. In this case, I began with sketches on the Sony app that’s preinstalled on the Xperia Z Ultra. Then I downloaded the Android app SketchBook Pro for the more demanding details. With that and my favourite pencil, I had everything I needed to create the sketch.« To also capture tiny details and to assure that users can fully enjoy the gorgeous colours of their pictures, the Xperia Z Ultra is equipped with an extra-large 16.3 cm (6.4″) full-HD display (1,920 × 1,080 p, 342 ppi). The Triluminos screen with the new X-Reality Engine for smartphones boasts brilliant colours, and the OptiContrast panel guarantees a clear view of the screen even in direct sunlight. This smartphone is also irresistible thanks to its slim, 6.5 mm OmniBalance design. Weighing a mere 212 grammes, it’s also the lightest telephone in its class. Er überträgt seine Kraft über ein ZF-Achtgang-Automatikgetriebe, das nun zur Serienausstattung in allen Varianten der Continental GT und Continental GT Convertible-Modellfamilien gehört. Mit einer maximalen Leistung von 625 PS und einem Drehmoment von 800 Nm ist der neue Flying Spur kraftvoller als alle viertürigen Bentley-Modelle in der Geschichte der Marke. Zudem verfügt der neue Flying Spur im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell über ein um 14 Prozent verbessertes Verhältnis von Leistung zu Gewicht. Er beschleunigt innerhalb von 4,6 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h und erreicht eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 322 km/h. Zu den modernen Bentley-Werten gehört die Kraftübertragung via Allradantrieb. Dies gilt auch für den neuen Flying Spur, dessen Allradantrieb im Verhältnis 40:60 zugunsten der Hinterachse arbeitet und damit für ein sicheres und dynamisches Fahrverhalten bei allen Strassen- und Witterungsbedingungen sorgt.

Die Fondpassagiere können unabhängig voneinander auf die Inhalte in dem jeweiligen Player zugreifen oder Informationen aus der BCU laden. Über einen USB-Anschluss können Geräte aufgeladen werden.

Rear seat passengers have access to an extensive array of infotainment technology. A new Touch Screen Remote (TSR), deployed from a housing in the rear console at the touch of a button, allows passengers to control a variety of different systems. Powering the new Flying Spur is Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin turbo W12 engine, coupled to a ZF eight-speed transmission. Developing 625 PS (616 bhp) and 800 Nm of torque, the new Flying Spur features more power than any other Bentley four-door in history. A 14 per cent improvement in the power-to-weight ratio over the outgoing model delivers a breath-taking 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top-speed of 200 mph (322 km/h). Editor-in-Chief: Wo sind Ihre Wurzeln, Frau Piotaz?

Die Gründerin und Inhaberin von «VANITY the Art of Beauty» und «VANITY Cosmetics», Jacqueline Piotaz, ist stets auf der Suche nach neuen Möglichkeiten für die Jung- und Gesunderhaltung der Haut. Durch Zufall stiess sie in der amerikanischen «Vogue» auf eine Geschichte unter dem Titel «Michelle Obama discovers the Swiss Apple». Die amerikanische Präsidentengattin hatte also tatsächlich die Wirkung von Schweizer Äpfeln entdeckt? Was damit wohl gemeint war?

Jacqueline Piotaz: Ich wurde im Wallis geboren, in einer herrlichen Region der Schweiz, die – wie das Engadin – inmitten von hohen Berggipfeln liegt. Diese einmalige Landschaft hat mich stark geprägt und mir ein ausgeprägtes Traditionsbewusstsein vermittelt, verbunden mit einer starken Verwurzelung mit der Natur. Als junge Frau erlebte ich fast drei Jahre das Swinging London und wurde später in Zürich vom international tätigen Unternehmen McKinsey geprägt. Als Purserin, Flight Attendant und Beauty-Instruktorin bei der Swissair lernte ich viele Menschen, Länder und Kulturen kennen und lieben.

Gemeint war nicht der Apfel generell, sondern eine spezielle Sorte: der Uttwiler Spätlauber aus der Ostschweiz, von dem es nur noch etwa 20 Bäume gibt. Was diesen Apfel besonders auszeichnet, ist, dass seine Haut im Frühling noch genauso frisch und glatt ist wie im Herbst bei der Ernte – dank Pflanzenstammzellen, die auch für die menschliche Haut genutzt werden können.

Editor-in-Chief: Und wie kam der Wechsel in die Kosmetikbranche?

Jacqueline Piotaz: Der Gedanke, den Reichtum der Schweizer Natur und die neusten Erkenntnisse der Biotechnologie für eine zeitlos schöne Haut nutzbar zu machen, reifte im Zuge meiner 25-jährigen Berufslaufbahn in der Welt der Kosmetik, in den eigenen «VANITY the Art of Beauty»-Geschäften und nicht zuletzt auch als CEO und Inhaberin von «VANITY Cosmetics», einem Vertriebsunternehmen für hochwertige internationale Kosmetiklinien im professionellen Bereich.

Jacqueline Piotaz verfolgte die technologischen Fortschritte in diesem Bereich intensiv und überlegte sich, ob die Substanz nicht auch noch in anderen Schweizer Naturprodukten vorkam. Schliesslich wurden dieselben Eigenschaften auch in der Gamay-Traube und der legendären (Walliser) Alpenrose gefunden. Editor-in-Chief: Also kamen Sie über Ihre eigene 25-jährige Erfahrung mit «VANITY» zum eigenen Kosmetikprodukt?

Genauso hatte sich Jacqueline Piotaz immer schon ihre eigene Produkte­linie vorgestellt: Eine Kollektion von Produkten, die man täglich in einer bestimmten Reihenfolge anwendet, und somit die Haut genau das bekommt, was sie braucht. Ebenso wichtig wie die Wirkung ihrer Kosmetiklinie ist der Entwicklerin die klar nachvollziehbare Schweizer Herkunft der Rohstoffe in den Produkten und der Schweizer Entwicklungs- und Produktionsstandort. «Ich lege ganz bewusst grössten Wert darauf, dass alles, was mit meiner Kosmetiklinie zusammenhängt, wenn möglich aus der Schweiz kommt», sagt Piotaz.

Editor-in-Chief: Where are your roots, Ms Piotaz?

Jacqueline Piotaz: I was born in the Valais, a magnificent part of Switzerland which, like the Engadin, is surrounded by high mountain peaks. This unique landscape shaped me and instilled a keen sense of tradition in me and also resulted in my close affinity with nature. As a young woman I spent almost three years in the then swinging London and worked at the international company McKinsey in Zurich. As a purser, flight attendant and beauty instructor at Swissair I got to know many people and learned to love a number of different countries and cultures.

Editor-in-Chief: And what prompted you to move into the cosmetics industry?

Jacqueline Piotaz: The idea of using the riches of Switzerland’s nature and bio high technology for the benefit of a timeless beautiful skin matured during my 25-year career in the world of cosmetics, in my own »VANITY the Art of Beauty« stores and also in my capacity as CEO and owner of »VANITY Cosmetics« – a distribution company for high-quality international cosmetics ranges in the professional segment.

Editor-in-Chief: So with your own 25 years of experience at »VANITY« you arrived at your own cosmetics product?

By coincidence she came across a story in the American issue of »Vogue« entitled »Michelle Obama discovers the Swiss apple«. Did the wife of the US President really discover the effects of Swiss apples? What does that mean?

Jacqueline Piotaz: Exactly. The daily work at »VANITY Cosmetics« showed me that there was a market niche: products for customers who want to pamper their skin with an exclusive range »simple and smart« using the very best Swiss quality. Each of my luxurious formulas contains a precious combination of three plant stem cell extracts, based on apple, grape and Alpine rose which in order to increase the efficacy is supplemented with active complexes and further high concentrations of ingredients.

What were meant were not apples in general but one particular variety: the Uttwil Spätlauber, which is very rare today. It is known for its exceptional capacity to keep for long periods. As the apple could be stored for a long time without becoming shrivelled or losing its flavour and texture, it clearly had special ingredients and especially long-lived stem cells.

Jacqueline Piotaz: The absolute efficacy of my products had top priority – as well as the fact that the whole production process is based in Switzerland. Als Thomas Cook im Juli 1863 mit einer Gruppe von Engländern in die Schweiz kam, um das Abenteuer einer Reise durch die Schweiz selbst zu erleben, ahnte er mit Sicherheit nicht, dass 150 Jahre später das während der Reise geschriebene Tagebuch der Jemima Morrell, einer jungen Reisebegleiterin, zu einer App* werden würde. Immer mehr Engländer folgten den Spuren von Cook in die Schweiz. Die Hotel­unterkünfte zahlten sie mit einem von Cook erfundenen Voucher, den sie als Wertpapier in England erworben hatten. Auf diesen Reisen drangen die englischen Gäste immer weiter in die Schweizer Alpen vor, unter anderem über die Bündner Pässe bis ins Engadin, wo sie in der Nähe eines idyllischen Sees in einem kleinen Dorf namens St. Moritz Halt einlegten.

Thomas Cook came to Switzerland in July 1863 with a group of British travellers, wanting to experience the adventure of a journey through Switzerland himself. At the time he surely never dreamed that 150 years later, the diary written during that journey by Jemima Morrell, a young travelling companion, would become an app*. More and more British travellers followed Cook’s footsteps in Switzerland, paying for their hotel stays with a voucher Cook invented which they had purchased in Britain. During these journeys, British guests pushed further and further into the Swiss Alps, including travelling over the Graubünden passes all the way to Engadine, where they stayed in a small village called St. Moritz near an idyllic lake.

Quando a luglio del 1863 Thomas Cook arrivò in Svizzera con un gruppo di inglesi per avventurarsi all’interno del paese, non poteva immaginare che 150 anni dopo il diario di viaggio di Jemima Morrell, una giovane del gruppo, sarebbe diventato un’app*. 05 02 Die Engadiner, von denen sich einige bereits «Gastwirt» oder gar «Hotelier» nannten, begriffen schnell, dass das trockene Klima auf fast 2000 Metern über Meer ein attraktiver Anziehungspunkt für geplagte Städter sein würde: Besonders die Engländer litten zu dieser Zeit häufig an Lungenkrankheiten, lebten sie doch in Städten mit hoher Luftverschmutzung. The people of Engadin, some of whom already referred to themselves as innkeepers or even hoteliers, understood quickly that the dry climate at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level made Engadin an attractive destination for afflicted city dwellers. At the time, the British in particular suffered frequently from lung diseases from living in cities with high levels of air pollution. Those who could afford to travel came to places such as St. Moritz, Davos, Arosa, Grindelwald or Leysin. As a consequence these locations enjoyed a boom in the construction of sanatoriums, in part to treat tuberculosis, which was widespread at the time.

Gli abitanti dell’Engadina, alcuni già «locandieri» o addirittura «albergatori», capirono velocemente che, grazie al clima secco a quasi 2000 metri sopra il livello del mare, la loro valle sarebbe diventata un polo di attrazione per i «cittadini» di salute cagionevole. A quel tempo soprattutto gli inglesi soffrivano spesso di malattie polmonari, poiché vivevano in agglomerati urbani con elevato inquinamento atmosferico.

Chi aveva i mezzi intraprendeva viaggi verso mete come St. Moritz, Davos, Arosa, Grindelwald o Leysin, dove in quest’ordine emersero numerosi sanatori per il trattamento di malattie diffuse, come la tubercolosi.

So sassen im September 1864 englische Gäste zusammen mit Johannes Badrutt im Salon des alten Kulm Hotels in St. Moritz – das Palace Hotel wurde erst 1896 von dessen Sohn Caspar erbaut – und dachten widerstrebend an die Rückfahrt in das düstere, feuchte und verschmutzte London. Da kam Johannes auf einen verrückten Gedanken: Er versprach seinen Gästen die schönsten, sonnigsten Tage, würden sie im kommenden Winter zu ihm kommen. Und falls er sein Versprechen nicht einlösen könnte, würde er ihren Aufenthalt und die jeweiligen Rückfahrkosten höchstpersönlich übernehmen.

Einzig die Kleidung musste man dem harten Engadiner Klima anpassen, waren sich doch die englischen Gäste die tiefen Temperaturen nicht gewohnt. Man empfahl ihnen wollige Mäntel, Mützen und Handschuhe, Flanellunterwäsche für Herren und Damen und dicke Schuhe mit Gamaschen und Nägeln auf der Sohle, damit die Gäste bei Eis und Schnee nicht hinfielen. Und um die zarte Gesichtshaut vor den hochalpinen Strahlen zu schützen, während man sich wohlig der Sonne aussetzte und die Wärme genoss, wurde dick Melkfett aufgetragen.

The only thing requiring adaptation to the harsh climate of an Engadin winter was the guests’ clothing, as the British were not used to such low temperatures. Wool coats, caps and gloves along with long flannel underwear were recommended for both ladies and gentlemen.

Gaiters were to be worn over thick shoes with nails in their soles to provide traction on ice and snow and keep the guests from falling.

And in order to protect their delicate facial skin from the high Alpine rays as they enjoyed the sun and the warmth, the guests applied a thick layer of bag balm.

Gesagt, getan.

Engländer sind manchmal exzentrische Leute, etwas leichtsinnig und übermütig, und pflegen einen trockenen Humor. Die heitere Gesellschaft schlug ein und tauchte tatsächlich im folgenden Dezember in St. Moritz auf. Der kluge Hotelier hielt sein Versprechen und der Engadiner Winter entwickelte sich zu einem sonnigen Traum.

So wurde, wie man sich heute noch erzählt, vor 150 Jahren die Winter­saison geboren.

Si munirono quindi di cappotti, berretti, guanti, biancheria intima di flanella, tanto gli uomini quanto le donne, e scarponi chiodati con ghette per non scivolare sul ghiaccio e sulla neve. E per proteggere la loro pelle sensibile mentre si godevano il tepore del sole in alta montagna, spalmavano un grosso strato di vaselina.

So it was that in September 1864, a number of British guests sat with Johannes Badrutt in the salon of the old Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz – the Palace Hotel was not built until 1896 by his son Caspar – thinking reluctantly of their return to the dreariness, damp and dirt of London.

Then Johannes had a crazy idea: he promised his guests the most beautiful, sunniest days they could imagine if they came to stay with him during the coming winter. And he told them that if he couldn’t keep his promise, he would pay personally for the costs of their stays and their return travel expenses to London.

05 Infolge der tiefen Temperaturen mussten auch die Hotels aufgerüstet werden: An die Fenster wurden Vorfenster angebracht und die grossen Eingangstüren mit Vorhängen als Windfang versetzt. Die Böden wurden im Hinblick auf eine mögliche Beschädigung durch Schnee und Schuhnägel mit speziellen, reich verzierten Kacheln ausgelegt und die Hallen und Zimmergänge mit Teppichen belegt. Nicht nur eine Heizung war unabdingbar, sondern auch warmes Wasser, das die Zimmermädchen den Gästen brachten. Auch die Hoteliers litten damals: In einem Brief an seine Frau schreibt Caspar Badrutt, dass er bei minus 15 Grad auf dem Boden des Hotelbüros schlafe, weil die Gäste früher als angekündigt angekommen und leider noch nicht alle Zimmer fertig seien.

No sooner said than done.

The British can be eccentric, they’re always a little careless and cocky, and they have a dry sense of humour. And so the amused group of guests agreed – and actually turned up the following December in St. Moritz. Johannes Badrutt kept his promise: that winter in Engadin turned into a sunny dream.

And that, people still say, is how the winter season was born, 150 years ago.

Fu così che a Johannes venne un’idea bizzarra: promise ai suoi ospiti giorni splendidi e soleggiati se fossero tornati da lui l’inverno seguente. Qualora non fosse riuscito a mantenere la promessa, avrebbe assunto i costi del loro soggiorno e del viaggio di ritorno.

The hotels, too, had to be fitted out to deal with the cold weather.

Inner windows were installed on the windows and large entrance doors were hung with curtains to create vestibules against the wind and cold. The floors were laid with special richly decorated tiles with a view to possible damage from snow and nails in shoes, and carpets were laid down in the large rooms and hallways. A heating system was essential, as was hot water, which the chamber maids brought to the guests’ rooms. The hoteliers suffered too: in a letter to his wife, Caspar Badrutt writes that he slept on the floor of the hotel office, where the temperature was 15 degrees Celsius below zero, as the guests had arrived earlier than planned and unfortunately not all the rooms were ready yet.

Detto, fatto.

A volte gli inglesi sono persone eccentriche, un po’ sventate e spavalde, oltre a coltivare un asciutto senso dell’umorismo. L’allegra combriccola accettò e a dicembre tornò a St. Moritz. Grazie al tempo stupendo l’astuto albergatore poté mantenere la sua promessa: l’inverno engadinese si trasformò in un sogno baciato dal sole.

A causa delle basse temperature, anche gli hotel dovevano essere opportunamente attrezzati, con doppie finestre e tende antivento davanti alle grandi porte d’ingresso. Inoltre sui pavimenti furono posate piastrelle speciali con ricchi decori per prevenire possibili danni causati dalla neve e dalle scarpe chiodate e le sale e i corridoi vennero provvisti di tappeti. Non solo il riscaldamento era indispensabile, ma anche l’acqua calda, che veniva portata nelle stanze dalle cameriere.

Il freddo non risparmiava nemmeno gli albergatori: in una lettera a sua moglie, Caspar scrisse che a meno 15 gradi aveva dovuto dormire sul pavimento dell’ufficio, perché gli ospiti erano arrivati prima del previsto e alcune camere non erano ancora pronte.

Fu così, come ancora oggi si racconta, che 150 anni fa nacque la stagione invernale.

06 Während im Sommer die Gäste im Freien weilen konnten, bis sie die Dämmerung oder der Hunger zurück ins Hotel trieb, musste man für die Wintergäste neue Betätigungen finden, schon der Kälte wegen. Dazu gehörten Zeitvertreib, aber auch Ertüchtigung, waren doch die Engländerinnen und Engländer der Belle Epoque sportliche Leute, die gerne miteinander wetteiferten. Die meisten waren bereits in den englischen «Skating Rinks» Rollschuh gelaufen und fanden es toll, nun in Schlittschuhen über den gefrorenen See zu gleiten. So wurden 1870 in Davos und St. Moritz Skating Clubs gegründet und zehn Jahre später die ersten Curling Clubs der Schweiz. Aber auch die Engländer in St. Moritz blieben nicht untätig: 1872 liessen sie hinter dem Kulm Hotel die erste künstliche Schlittenbahn bauen und im Winter 1884/1885 entstand der «Cresta Run». Vor 125 Jahren, im Winter 1888/1889, baute ein Hufschmied aus zwei Skeletonschlitten aus britischem Stahl den ersten Bobrennschlitten.

Dazu kamen Eishockey als Mannschaftssport und Skifahren für Individualisten, und um 1900 konnten die Gäste bei schönem Wetter vor dem neu erbauten Badrutt’s Palace sogar Tennis spielen!

During the summer, guests could remain out of doors until either dusk or hunger drove them inside, but the cold meant that winter guests required other amusements. They included both entertainment and exercise, since the British of the Belle Époque were sporting people who enjoyed competing with one another. Most were familiar with British roller skating rinks and delighted in gliding across the frozen lake on ice skates. As a result, a skating club was founded in Davos and St. Moritz in 1870, and was joined ten years later by the first curling clubs in Switzerland. The British in St. Moritz also kept busy: in 1872 they had the first artificial toboggan run built behind Kulm Hotel, and the Cresta Run was constructed in the winter of 1884/1885. 125 years ago, during the winter of 1888/1889, a blacksmith took two skeleton sleds of British steel and built the first bobsled. This pastime was joined by ice hockey as a team sport and skiing for individualists. And by around 1900, if the weather was good, the guests could even play tennis in front of the newly built Badrutt’s Palace!

Last but not least: The Olympic Committee has chosen St. Moritz twice as the location for its winter games, in 1928 and 1948.

Mentre in estate gli ospiti potevano rimanere all’aria aperta finché l’imbrunire e la fame non li richiamavano nell’hotel, in inverno, a causa del freddo, era necessario trovare nuovi passatempi. Tra questi le attività fisiche erano molto apprezzate dagli inglesi della Belle Epoque, sportivi e amanti delle competizioni. La maggior parte di essi praticava già il pattinaggio a rotelle negli «Skating Rinks» inglesi e la possibilità di sperimentare il lago ghiacciato come pista fu accolta con grande entusiasmo. Nel 1870 a Davos e a St. Moritz fu quindi fondato uno Skating Club seguito, dieci anni dopo, dai primi Curling Club della Svizzera. Ma anche gli inglesi si diedero da fare a St. Moritz: nel 1872 fecero costruire la prima pista artificiale per slitte dietro il Kulm Hotel e nell’inverno del 1884/1885 nacque il Cresta Run. 125 anni fa, nell’inverno 1888/1889, un maniscalco costruì il primo bob con due slitte skeleton di acciaio inglese. Inoltre arrivarono l’hockey su ghiaccio come sport di squadra e lo sci per gli individualisti. Intorno al 1900, con il bel tempo, agli ospiti fu addirittura offerta la possibilità di giocare a tennis davanti al nuovo Badrutt’s Palace.

The brushed screw-in caseback is engraved with »Si14« (a reference to its silicon balance spring), »Ceragold«, »White Planet« and »St. Moritz«. The caseback also has a sapphire crystal that allows a clear view of one of the world’s finest mechanical watch movements.

O M E G A L adymatic The OMEGA Ladymatic is a mesmerising blend of extraordinary design and truly innovative watchmaking. It was crafted for the woman who cares as much about the technology in her timepiece as she does its appearance. This model features a brown dial marked with diamond-set indexes and decorated in a supernova pattern with a date window at the 3 o’clock position. The exquisite dial is visible through a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The bezel is mounted on a 34 mm 18K red gold case on an 18K red gold bracelet. Diamonds decorating the bezel and bracelet links are arranged in a snow-set pattern.

A wave-patterned gold ring with diamonds and a brown ceramic inner casebody decorates the side of the case. The transparent caseback makes it possible to view the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8521 movement within.

The Planet Ocean White Planet St. Moritz is fitted with the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8501 with an 18 Ct red gold rotor and balance bridge. With its Si14 silicon balance spring, the dazzling timepiece comes with a four-year warranty.
