lles fing in der Wüste an. Seit jeher gab es im Südosten der Arabischen Halbinsel Sonne und Sand im Überfluss – seit 1958 auch Erdöl. 1971 erlangten die United Arab ­Emirates ihre Unabhängigkeit und ihre Herrscher beschlossen, gemeinsam einen neuen Staat zu gründen. Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, ­Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Shajra und Umm al Qaiwain wurden im Föderationsbund der ­Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate vereint. Heute sind UAE oder auf Deutsch VAE auf der Überholspur. Der Ölboom führte zum rasanten Wachstum und unter dem Motto «höher, schneller und grösser» s­ chossen spektakuläre Bauprojekte aus dem Boden. Nirgendwo sonst treffen darum Zukunft und Vergangenheit so eindrücklich aufeinander.

Dubai, einst unbedeutende Beduinensiedlung am Meer, entwickelte sich zur grössten Stadt der Emirate. Der arabische Handelsplatz ist heute eine aufstrebende Millionenstadt mitten in der Wüste. In der ­faszinierenden Metropole mit ihren utopischen Bauten, den luxuriösen Mega-Shoppingmalls und den extravaganten Hotels scheint nichts unmöglich.

Das Emirat Abu Dhabi wurde 1791 als Siedlung nahe einer Süss­wasser­ quelle vom Beduinenstamm der Bani Yas unter Schachbut bin ­Dhiyab gegründet, nachdem sie von seinem Vater Dhiyab bin Isa e ­ ntdeckt ­worden war. Unter Scheich Zayed bin Chalifa (­1855–1908) begann der Aufstieg des Emirats. Ihm gelang die Wahrung der S ­ ouveränität gegenüber dem britischen Machtanspruch. Abu Dhabi ist heute das wohl­ habendste Emirat der VAE. Man könnte Abu Dhabi als das «Dubai der Individualtouristen» und Geheimtipp bezeichnen.

Heute sind sich die Verantwortlichen bewusst, dass der Ölsegen beschränkt ist, und setzen darum schon jetzt auf zukunftsträchtige Wirtschaftszweige – allen voran den Tourismus. Die beiden w ­ ichtigsten ­Emirate, Dubai und Abu Dhabi, befinden sich bereits heute auf dem Weg zu einem internationalen Tourismus-, Handels- und Finanz­zentrum, um für die Zukunft gewappnet zu sein. Opernhäuser, Konzertsäle, ein neues Guggenheim-Museum und ein neues Louvre sind in der Planung und unser wunderschönes Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi wurde in Saadiyat Island 2012 gebaut.

Die grossen Standortvorteile wie niedrige Energiekosten, ­reichlich vorhandenes Kapital und minimale Steuern haben in den Staaten auf der Arabischen Halbinsel auch die Gründung erfolgreich arbeitender Luftfahrtgesellschaften begünstigt. t all started out in the desert. There has always been an ­abundance of sunshine and sand in the southeast of this Arabian peninsula – and since 1958 there has been oil too. The United Arab Emirates demanded independence in 1971 and so its rulers decided to set up a new state together. Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Shajra and Umm al Qaiwain were brought together in the federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Today the UAE are on the road to recovery. The oil boom is fuelling rapid growth and some ­spectacular construction projects are springing up based on the motto of »higher, faster and larger«. Nowhere else are the past and future so ­impressively combined.

Dubai, once an insignificant Bedouin settlement by the sea, quickly developed into the largest city in the Emirates. This Arab centre of trade is now an up-and-coming city home to millions at the heart of the desert.

Nothing seems impossible in this fascinating metropolis with its utopian buildings, luxury mega shopping malls and extravagant hotels.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi was founded in 1791 under Shakhbut bin Dhiyaba as a settlement close to the freshwater source of the Bani Yas tribe which was discovered by his father Dhiyab bin Isa. The development of the emirate began under Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa. He succeeded in ­protecting the sovereignty of the emirate from the British claims to power.

Today Abu Dhabi is one of the most affluent emirates in the UAE. It could be described as the »Dubai of individual tourists« – a real insider’s tip.

Today those in charge are well aware that oil deposits are limited and so there has been a shift towards more forward-thinking branches of the economy – in particular tourism. The two most important emirates, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are currently on their way to becoming a centre for ­international tourism, trade and finance in order to be well equipped for the future. Opera houses, concert halls, a new Guggenheim Museum and a new Louvre are currently in the planning stages and the magnificent Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi was built in Saadiyat Island in 2012.

The big advantages of the location such as low energy costs, substantial available capital and minimal taxes have also favoured the e­ stablishment of successfully collaborating aviation companies in the states of the ­Arabian Peninsula. They impress travellers with their e­ xceptional service and unique luxury on board. These new airline fleets are among the newest in the world. Passengers benefit from the latest ­on-board entertainment and ultra-modern designs inside. The Arab Gulf Airlines is characterised by its exceptional service, regardless of what class passengers choose. Arab hospitality is a top priority here.

Christof Küng, Editor-in-Chief Schon immer war Christof Küng fasziniert von echten Geschichten.

Er las Bücher, sammelte Magazine und interessierte sich für Design, Fotografie und den techno­logischen Fortschritt. Aus seinen Interessen wurde schliesslich seine Berufung. In den 20 Jahren seiner Selbstständigkeit gründete er eine Branding-Agentur, einen Verlag mit diversen Magazinen, ein Internet-Portal sowie eine Private-Equity-­Boutique. Jacqueline Penza, Creative Director of the Fashion Section Jacqueline Penza ist eine kreative und talentierte Creative-­Direktorin sowie eine erfahrene Hair- und Make-up-Artistin in Zürich, die ständig auf der Suche nach neuen Herausforderungen ist. Sie hat während vielen Jahren die Welt bereist und dabei wertvolle Er­f ahrungen im Dienstleistungsbereich und im Umgang mit anspruchsvollen Kunden gesammelt. She travelled the world for many years and gained valuable experience in the service sector, dealing with demanding customers. She learned a lot from different cultures and influences. After numerous photo shoots in the fashion industry she was given the opportunity to realise her dream and work as a creative director.

Claudia Link, Photographer Claudia Link arbeitet als freie Fotografin in Basel und Zürich. Sie konzentriert sich in ihrer Arbeit vor allem auf Bilder von Menschen, einschliesslich Porträts sowie Lifestyle- und Beauty­fotografie. Sie pflegt in ihren Bildern einen grafischen und sehr sauberen Stil, der durch einen subtilen ­künstlerischen Einfluss angereichert wird. Sie arbeitet auf Location vor Ort und fotografiert sowohl unterwegs auf Reise als auch in ihrem geräumigen, technisch voll ausgestatteten Studio, wo sie zusammen mit international renomierten Stylisten sowie Hair- und Make-up Artisten einzigartige Bildwelten kreiert.

Claudia Link works as a freelance photographer in Basel and Zurich. She mainly focuses on people, portrait, lifestyle and beauty photography and has a graphic, clean look to her pictures that is simultaneously enriched and transformed by applying a subtle artistic influence. She works on location and shoots while traveling, as well as in her spacious, fully equipped studio where she creates unique visual worlds alongside internationally renowned stylists, hair and make-up artists.

Ursula Krebs, PR Account Manager Ursula Krebs stammt aus Bern und ist als PR Account Managerin bei Gretz Communications tätig. Die Hotelfachfrau mit lang­ jähriger Erfahrung in der Kommunikation spricht fünf S ­ prachen.

Sie hat ein ausgeprägtes Flair im Umgang mit Menschen jeglicher Art. Ihre Faszination für fremde Länder und andere Kulturen war seit jeher gross – Reisen ist ihre Passion. Das Emirat Abu Dhabi wurde 1791 als Siedlung nahe einer Süsswasserquelle vom Beduinenstamm der Bani Yas unter Schachbut bin Dhiyab gegründet, nachdem sie von seinem Vater Dhiyab bin Isa entdeckt worden war.

Sie verlegten ihren Hauptsitz nach Abu Dhabi. Grund war die zunehmende Expansion der Wahhabiten aus dem Nadschd, die sich auch gegen die Beduinen an der Golfküste richtete. 1833 löste sich Dubai unter dem Clan der Al Maktum vom Emirat Abu Dhabi.

Unter Scheich Zayed bin Chalifa (1855 – 1908) begann der Aufstieg des Emirats. Ihm gelang die Wahrung der Souveränität gegenüber dem britischen Machtanspruch.

Abu Dhabi entwickelte sich zu einem bedeutenden Z ­ entrum des Perlenhandels. Die nach seinem Tod ausbrechenden Machtkämpfe wurden erst unter Scheich Schachbut (1928 – 1966) beendet. Allerdings brach 1930 mit der Einführung der japanischen Zuchtperlen die Perlen­fischerei als wichtiges wirtschaftliches Standbein für das Land zusammen. Erst mit Beginn der Erdölförderung und der Ablösung Schachbuts durch seinen Bruder Scheich Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1966 – 2004) konnte sich die Wirtschaft des Emirates wieder entwickeln.

ABU DHABI

The emirate of Abu Dhabi was founded in 1791 under Shakhbut bin Dhiyaba as a settlement close to the freshwater source of the Bani Yas tribe which was discovered by his father Dhiyab bin Isa. And so the seat of the emirate was moved to Abu Dhabi. One reason for this was the increasing expansion of the Wahhabis from Najd who rebelled against the Bedouins on the Gulf coast. In 1883, Dubai broke away from the Emirate of Abu Dhabi under the Al Maktum clan.

The development of the emirate began under Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (1855 – 1908). He succeeded in protecting the sovereignty of the emirate from the British claims to power. Abu Dhabi quickly developed into an important centre of the pearl trade. The power struggles which broke out after his death came to an end finally under Sheikh Shakhbut (1928 – 1966). In 1930, the introduction of ­Japanese cultured pearls led to the collapse of pearl fishing as an important source of finance for the ­country. The economy of the Emirates only began to pick up again with the exploitation of oil and the replacement of ­Shakhbut by his brother Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1966 – 2004).

Noch bis in die 1960er-Jahre war auch Abu Dhabi ein Fischerdorf dessen Einwohner in Hütten rund um das Fort des Emirs lebten. Heute ist es das reichste und mächtigste der Emirate und besitzt 95 % der Erdöl- und 90 % der Erdgasreserven. Der Reichtum der Scheichs scheint unermesslich. Die Vorräte des Schwarzen Goldes hingegen sind begrenzt. In den letzten Jahren konzentriert sich das Emirat auf ein wirtschaftliches Diversifizierungsprogramm, um die Abhängig­ keit von Öl und Erdgas zu reduzieren. Das Diversifizierungsprogramm konzentriert sich auf ­Industrie, Immobilien und Einzelhandel, vor allem aber auf den Tourismus. Ähnlich, wie schon aus der Strategie von Dubai bekannt, investiert Abu Dhabi massiv in Wassersportaktivitäten, Einkaufszentren, Kulturevents, Shows oder in spektakuläre Architektur. Einige besonders sehenswerte Höhepunkte sollen konkret genannt werden.

Until the 1960s, Abu Dhabi was just a fishing village whose inhabitants lived in huts around the fort of the emir. Today it is the richest and most powerful of the emirates and possesses 95 % of the oil and 90 % of the gas reserves. The wealth of the sheikh seems almost immeasurable. Deposits of this »black gold« are limited, however. Over the last few years, the emirate has been focusing on a diversification programme to reduce dependence on oil and gas. This diversification programme concentrates on industry, property and retail and especially tourism. Like the Dubai strategy, Abu Dhabi is making substantial investments in water sports activities, shopping centres, cultural events, shows and spectacular architecture. Some specific highlights worthy of a visit deserve a special mention.

Am 2. Dezember 1971 entliess Grossbritannien die ehemaligen Trucial States, zu denen auch Abu Dhabi gehörte, in die Unabhängigkeit. Unter Führung des E ­ mirates Abu Dhabi wurden die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate aus den ehemaligen Trucial States Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Schardscha, Adschman, Umm al-Qaiwain und Fudschaira gegründet.

Am 10. Februar 1972 trat Ra’s al-Chaima als siebter und letzter ehemaliger Trucial State der Föderation bei.

Am 1. Januar 1974 führte Abu Dhabi eine Teil-Verstaatlichung der Ölwirtschaft durch. Der Staat Abu Dhabi beliess den produzierenden Gesellschaften 40 %.

Abu Dhabi ist das wohlhabendste Emirat der VAE, sowohl gemessen am Bruttonationaleinkommen als auch am Pro-Kopf-Einkommen. Das Emirat verfügt über 10 % der weltweiten Erdölreserven und hält globale Investitionen von mehr als 1 Billion US-Dollar. On 2 December 1971, Great Britain granted independence to the former Trucial States to which Abu Dhabi belonged. Under the direction of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates was founded from the former ­Trucial States of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain and Fujairah. On 10 February 1972, Ra’s al-Khaimah became the seventh and last former Trucial State to join the federation.

On 1 January 1974, Abu Dhabi implemented a partial nationalisation of the oil industry. The state of Abu Dhabi left 40 % to the production companies.

Abu Dhabi is the most affluent of the emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates, both in terms of gross domestic product and income per capita. The emirate has access to 10 % of global oil reserves and is responsible for global investments in excess of 1 billion US dollars. Abu Dhabi is currently planning 29 % of all future projects in the region of the Gulf Cooperation Council and is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy.

SUPERLATIVE DESERT METROPOLISES The decline of the pearl industry led to the loss of an important line of business. But the discovery of oil changed everything and so the unparalleled ascent of the Emirates began. Dubai, once an insignificant Bedouin settlement by the sea, developed into the largest city in the Emirates. This Arab trading centre is now an up-and-coming city home to millions of people in the middle of the desert. The oil boom led to rapid growth and some spectacular construction projects began to spring up, fuelled by the motto of »higher, faster and larger«. Nothing seems impossible in this fascinating metropolis with its utopian buildings, luxury mega shopping malls and extravagant hotels.

Auf der Jagd nach einer Gazelle entdeckte einst der Beduinenstamm der Bani Yas eine Süsswasserquelle auf einer flachen Sandinsel vor der Golfküste. Die ­Beduinen ­gründeten dort die Siedlung Abu Dhabi (zu Deutsch Vater der Gazelle). 1793 wurde Abu Dhabi Sitz des Scheichs und Hauptstadt des grössten der sieben Emirate. Nach und nach entstand ein Hafen und die Einwohner der Stadt stiegen in den damals florierenden Perlen­ handel ein.

Erst 1971 erlangten sie ihre Un­­ab­ hängig­keit und ihre Herrscher beschlossen, gemeinsam einen neuen Staat zu gründen. So w ­ urden Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, ­Shajra und Umm al Qaiwain im Föderationsbund der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate VAE vereint. Die e ­ inzelnen Emirate sind ansonsten jedoch weitgehend autonom.

It all began in the desert. While hunting for a gazelle, the Bedouin tribe of Bani Yas found a source of freshwater on a flay sandy island off the Gulf Coast.

The Bedouins founded the settlement of Abu Dhabi here (»father of the gazelle« in English). In 1793, Abu Dhabi became the seat of the sheikh and capital of one of the largest of the seven emirates. A harbour gradually developed here and the inhabitants of the town entered the flourishing pearl trade business.

bu Dhabi became an important centre of the pearl fishing industry. However the merchant ships often suffered acts of piracy, which caused the English to take action. Following heavy fighting, a sea peace agreement was signed in 1892. This contract between the »Trucial States« appointed the Gulf emirates as protectorates of Great Britain. However in 1971, they began to demand independence and their rulers decided to found a new state together. And so Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Shajra and Umm al Qaiwain were brought together in the federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However the individual emirates are otherwise largely autonomous.

The third largest emirate has a particularly special position thanks to its location. Its beaches are located between two seas: on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the Indian Ocean. The city and sea and the deserts and mountains form interesting contrasts in the region. Sharjah is situated close to the glamorous metropolis of Dubai and things are much quieter here.

The focus is on culture – the emirate of Sharjah wants to protect its historical heritage and share it with its visitors. In 2014, it was chosen as the UNESCO Cultural Capital of the Islamic World.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS In Sharjah City findet jährlich das «Sharjah Festival of Light» statt. Dieses Lichtfestival ist die erste derartige Ver­anstaltung im Mittleren Osten. Mittels modernster Lichttechnik und musikalischer Untermalung erhalten die historischen Gebäude und Plätze der Stadt ein völlig neues Erscheinungsbild. Die Illuminationen tauchen den Cultural Square in farbig wechselndes Licht. Internationale Künstler setzen die Kulturstätten Sharjahs mit Licht und Musik in Szene. Gebannt folgen die Zuschauer den Computer­animationen, welche die Sehenswürdigkeiten in phantasievoller und unterhaltsamer Weise «verändern». Das Lichtfestival bedient sich modernster LED-Technologie, um den Energieverbrauch möglichst gering zu halten. Darüber hinaus wird während des Lichtspektakels die Strassen­ beleuchtung abgeschaltet. So wirken die Lichtanimationen eindrücklicher und gleichzeitig ist es ein Commitment zum bewussten Umgang mit Energie. Ziel des «Sharjah Festival of Lights» ist es, die Islamische A ­ rchitektur und Kultur im besten Licht erscheinen zu lassen und das Kultur­emirat als Tourismusdestination zu festigen.

The »Sharjah Festival of Light« takes place each year in Sharjah City. The festival of light is the first event of its kind in the Middle East. Modern lighting technology and musical ­accompaniment are used to create a completely new look for the historic buildings and squares in the city. The illuminations submerge the Cultural Square in changing coloured lights. International artists use light and music to place Sharjah’s cultural sights in the limelight. Spectators are spellbound as they watch the computer animations which »transform« the sights in an imaginative and entertaining way.

The Festival of Light makes use of the latest LED technology to keep energy consumption as low as possible. The street lights are also switched off during the lighting show. This makes the lighting animations appear even more impressive and shows a commitment to the prudent use of energy. The aim of the »Sharjah Festival of Light« is to place Islamic architecture and art in the best possible light and to e­ stablish this emirate of culture as a tourism destination.

CLASSIC CAR MUSEUM Etwas ganz Besonderes ist das persönliche Auto­museum des Königs. Direkt neben dem Flughafen gelegen, zeigt das 2008 eröffnete «Sharjah Classic Cars Museum» mehr als hundert Autos verschiedener Marken aus den Jahren 1904 bis 1964. Erstklassige, auf Hochglanz polierte Oldtimer – einer schöner als der andere. Das Museum soll den historischen Wert klassischer Autos erhalten und ihre Geschichte aufzeigen. Ursprünglich gründete Scheich Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed al-Qassimi das Museum «Al Mahatta». Dieses befindet sich im allerersten Flughafen­ gebäude des gleichnamigen Flughafens und zeigte ursprünglich nebst ein paar Autos und Zwei­rädern Exponate von den ersten Flugversuchen bis zur Mond­landung. Der erste Flughafen der Golfregion wurde nämlich 1932 in Sharjah eröffnet. Er wurde damals als Zwischenstopp für kommerzielle Flüge von England nach Indien genutzt.

2003 begann der Ankauf von Oldtimern für ein reines Automuseum direkt neben dem Al Mahatta Airport. Dieses konnte 2008 in einem eigens dafür errichteten Gebäude feierlich eröffnet werden. Der Scheich und die Regierung unterstützten den extra gegründeten Oldtimer Club, um die Geschichte des Automobils, welches erst um 1930 nach Sharjah gelangte, zu würdigen.

The king’s personal car museum is certainly something special. Located right by the airport, the »Sharjah Classic Cars Museum« opened in 2008 and features over a hundred cars from different brands dating from 1904 to 1964. Top quality sparkling vintage vehicles – all as beautiful as each other. The museum aims to preserve the historic value of classic cars and present their history. The »Museum Al Mahatta« was originally founded by Sheikh PhD Sultan bin Mohammed al Qasimi. It is located in the very first airport building at the airport of the same name and originally featured a few cars and bikes as well as exhibits from the first attempted flights and the moon landing. The first airport in the Gulf region was opened in Sharjah in 1932. At that time, it was used as a stopover for commercial flights from England to India. The acquisition of vintage vehicles for a specific car museum close to Al Mahatta Airport began in 2003. The official opening of the museum was celebrated in 2008 in a building set up especially for the purpose. The sheikh and government sponsored the Vintage Vehicle Club which was also founded to pay tribute to the history of cars which only began to feature in Sharjah in 1930.

FASCINATING MUSEUMS IN THE KINGDOM OF SHARJAH The emirate of Sharjah offers a range of other fascinating museums too. The »Sharjah Art Museum« exhibits works by contemporary Arab artists, photos and paintings from the collection of Sheikh al-Qasimi and a collection of Arab scripts.

The »Heritage Museum«, a traditional building made from coral, features some old exhibits and offers insight into the ­traditional way of life. The »Islamic Museum« meanwhile contains a ­comprehensive range of Islamic coins and a valuable collection of hand-written Koran manuscripts.

Life here is therefore significantly less glamorous and lavish than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. People here traditionally base their livelihoods on agriculture and fishing, from boat building to cultivating dates at the oases.

TOURISM AS AN ALTERNATIVE Tourism today represents a new and important branch of the economy. The landscape is characterised by its sandy deserts dotted with lively oases. The settlements here have retained their Arabian flair. FERRARI-WORLD: DER WELTGRÖSSTE INDOOR-THEMENPARK MIT DER SCHNELLSTEN ACHTERBAHN

2005 gaben Aldar Properties PJSC und Ferrari bekannt, einen Themenpark bauen zu wollen. Im N ­ ovember 2008 wurde mit den Bau­arbeiten begonnen und am 4. ­November 2010 wurde der Park eröffnet. ­Ferrari World ist damit der erste grosse ­T hemenpark neben dem ­kleineren am Stammsitz in Maranello, der für die Marke Ferrari gebaut wurde. Die Ferrari World b ­ einhaltet eine voll funktionsfähige Freizeit­rennstrecke, eine Go­kart­ bahn sowie einen ­Rally-Parcours und eine Drag-­RacingPiste, dazu eine grosse ­historische und aktuelle FerrariProduktübersicht mit dem e ­ rsten Ferrari­händler der Region. Dazu kommen ein Show- und Theater­komplex und einige spezielle Fahr­schulen mit Renn-Schnupper­ kursen. Im Zentrum des Ge­bäudes steht G-Force eine 62 Meter hohe Vertikal­fahrt von Huss ­Rides, die Passagiere ­s ollen darauf die G-Kräfte, wie sie in einem F1‑Renn­wagen auftreten, ­simuliert erfahren können.

Die übrigen ver­schiedenen Aktivitäten rund ums Auto­ fahren und die schnelle Bewegung bieten unter ­anderem die mit 240 km / h Spitzen­geschwindigkeit schnellste Achter­bahn der Welt – Formula Rossa (Beschleunigung von 0 auf 100 km / h in 2.9 Sekunden und von 0 auf 240 in 4.9 Sekunden). In nachempfundenen Ferrari-Fahr­zeugen soll dem ­Besucher auch mit dieser Achterbahn das in der ­Formel 1 auftretende Fahrgefühl, insbesondere das der hohen Beschleunigungs­kräfte, nahe­gebracht werden.

Eine weitere Achterbahn ist Fiorano GT C ­ hallenge. Viele der Fahrmöglichkeiten wenden sich bewusst an Kinder und Jugendliche, weil Ferrari davon ausgeht, vor allem hier ihre zukünftigen Käufer zu fi ­ nden. Selbstverständlich steht in den Restaurants und Imbiss­ein­richtungen die italienische Küche im Vordergrund. Südlich der ­Ferrari World wurde am 1. November 2009 auf dem neuen Yas Island Circuit der erste Grosse Preis von Abu Dhabi ausgetragen.

FERRARI WORLD: THE WORLD’S BIGGEST INDOOR THEME PARK WITH THE FASTEST ROLLERCOASTER

In 2005, Aldar Properties PJSC and Ferrari announced their intention to build a theme park. The construction work began in November 2008 and the park was finally opened on 4 November 2010. Ferrari World is the first large theme park built for the Ferrari brand alongside the smaller park at the headquarters in Maranello.

Ferrari World includes a fully functioning race track for amateur racers, a go-karting course, a rally driving trail and a drag racing track as well as a substantial overview of Ferrari products past and present with the region’s first Ferrari dealers. There is also a show and theatre ­complex and a few special driving schools with racing driver taster sessions. At the centre of the building is G-Force, a 62 m high vertical ride from Huss Ride which simulates the G-force which drivers experience in a Formula 1 race car.

The other driving and speed-related activities include the world’s fastest rollercoaster at 240 km / h – Formula Rossa (accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds and from 0 to 240 km / h in 4.9 seconds). Mock-up Ferrari cars are used on this rollercoaster to provide visitors with the Formula 1 feeling and in particular the high level of ­acceleration. The Fiorano GT Challenge is another roller­ coaster. Many of the rides are aimed at children and young people because Ferrari is assuming that these will be its buyers of the future! And of course the restaurants and snack stalls focus on Italian cuisine. On 1st ­November 2009, the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was held to the south of ­Ferrari World on the new Yas Island Circuit.

GESCHWINDIGKEITSRAUSCH: FORMULA 1TM ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX Etihad Airways ist stolzer Hauptsponsor des Grossen Preises von Abu Dhabi. Dieses seit 2009 bestehende Formel-1-Rennen machte sowohl die Airline als auch Abu Dhabi einem weltweiten Fernsehpublikum von über 80 Millionen Zuschauern bekannt. Der Grand Prix von Abu Dhabi findet auf dem Yas-Marina-Circuit statt. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Kursen, die bisweilen für ihre sterile Atmosphäre kritisiert worden sind, ist der Kurs von Abu Dhabi ungleich spektakulärer. Die von Philippe Gurdjian und Hermann Tilke gemeinsam entworfene Rennstrecke ist teilweise dicht um ein künstliches Hafenbecken geführt und erinnert mit den darin liegenden Yachten an die Hafenpassage des Stadtkurses von Monaco. Um die Boxenausfahrt auf der richtigen Seite mit der Strecke zusammenzuführen, musste ein unterirdischer Tunnel geschaffen werden. Als Highlight für die Zuschauer führt eine etwas langsamere Passage mitten durch das exklusive Yas-Viceroy-Hotel hindurch. Dessen einmalige Architektur verfügt über eine integrierte «Brücke», von der aus man im Hotel stehend die Formel-1-Autos unter sich durchdonnern sehen kann. Die Araber nennen ihren Grand Prix «The best of both Worlds» und tatsächlich ist Abu Dhabi mit dem Start in der Dämmerung und der Zielankunft in stockfinsterer Nacht ein echter ­Goldgriff gelungen. Die die TV-Bilder vom Yas-Marina-Circuit sind atem­beraubend. Sieger beim ersten Grossen Preis 2009 war Sebastian Vettel. Ein Jahr später sorgte der Deutsche mit dem Gewinn des WM-Titels an gleicher Stelle für ein Stück deutsche Motorsportgeschichte. Neben der erstklassigen Rennstrecke und dem Yachthafen beherbergt Yas Island luxuriöse Hotels und eine Golfanlage mit einem Ferrari Themenpark sowie ein Einkaufszentrum auf einer Fläche von 300 000 m2. Weitere Attraktionen sind geplant.

Etihad Airways is the proud main sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Formula 1 race was first launched in 2009 and introduced the airline and Abu Dhabi to a global TV audience of over 80 million viewers. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place on the Yas Marina circuit. Unlike other courses which have been criticised for their sterile atmosphere, the Abu Dhabi course is much more s­ pectacular. The race track designed by Philippe Gurdjian and Hermann Tilke closely follows a harbour basin in places and with its yachts, is reminiscent of the harbour section of the Monaco city course. An underground tunnel had to be installed to connect the pit exit on the right-hand side with the route. Another highlight for the spectators is a somewhat slower section which leads through the centre of the exclusive Yas Viceroy Hotel. Its unique architecture includes an ­integrated »bridge« at the hotel where guests can watch the Formula 1 cars racing past underneath. The Arabs refer to their Grand Prix as »The best of both worlds« and Abu Dhabi certainly has the golden touch, starting out in the twilight and finishing in the dead of night. The TV images of the Yas Marina circuit are breath-taking. The first Grand Prix in 2009 was won by Sebastian Vettel. A year later, the German secured a piece of German motorsports history by winning the World Championship title in the same place. In a ­ ddition to the top class race track and marina, Yas Island is home to some luxury hotels and a golf course with a Ferrari theme park and a 300 000 m2 ­shopping centre. Further attractions are planned.

Diese Motorboot Meisterschaft findet jährlich an dreizehn Veranstaltungsorten auf der ganzen Welt statt – einer davon ist Abu Dhabi. Einmal mehr ist man hier f­ asziniert vom Speed: Die Rennboote können ­nämlich innert 4 Sekunden von 0 auf 160 km / h beschleunigen und ­erreichen Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 250 km / h. Die T ­ atsache, Austragungsort dieses ­ultimativen, inter­nationalen Wettbewerbs zu sein, hat dem faszinierenden Powerboat-Sport in Abu Dhabi zu ­einer immensen Popularität v ­ erholfen. Jährlich finden sich unzählige Zuschauer zum F1-Powerboat-Rennen ein und auch Abenteuer­lustige, welche den Nervenkitzel ­dieses Rennsports selbst ­erleben wollen, ­werden an­gelockt. Wer sich die Schiffe lieber in aller Ruhe an­ sehen will, der besucht die «Abu Dhabi Yacht Show», die internationale Aus­stellung für Yachten. Diese f­i ndet jährlich in der eindrücklichen Yas Marina statt. Formula 1 is not just about car racing! The equivalent on water is the »F1 Powerboat World Championship«. This motorboat championship takes place at 13 different sites across the world each year – and one of them is Abu Dhabi.

Yet again, speed is the fascination: the racing boats can accelerate from 0 to 160 km / h in just 4 seconds with top speeds of 250 km / h. Hosting this ultimate international competition has led to this fascinating powerboat sport becoming immensely popular in Abu Dhabi. Each year, endless spectators flock to the F1 Powerboat race i­ ncluding adventure-seekers looking to experience the adrenaline rush of this racing sport. Those who prefer to admire the boats in peace and quiet can visit the »Abu Dhabi Yacht Show«, the international exhibition for yachts. This takes place each year at the impressive Yas Marina. The show features magnificent yachts, boats and an ­exhibitor profile including some of the most powerful boats on the international yacht scene. MAJESTÄTISCHEN BAUTEN: DIE PRACHTVOLLE SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN MOSCHEE

Die Zayid-Moschee ist die drittgrösste Moschee der Welt. Das Sakralbauwerk befindet sich auf einem rund 56 ­Hektar grossen Grundstück am Südostende der Haupt­ insel und ist benannt nach Emir Zayid bin ­Sultan Al Nahyan, einem Mit­gründer und erstem P ­ räsidenten der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate, d ­ essen Grab sich auf dem Gelände befindet. In ihren Aussenmassen von 224 mal 174 Metern bietet die Moschee Platz für 40 000 Gläubige. Die vier Minarette messen eine Höhe von jeweils 107 Metern, die der Hauptkuppel über dem Gebetssaal 75 Meter. Mit einem Durchmesser von 32,2 Metern gilt sie als grösste Moscheekuppel der Welt. Dem kompakten Zentralbau wurden am Rand über 40 kleinere Kuppeln aufgesetzt. Die Bau­kosten der Anlage beliefen sich auf 545 Millionen US-Dollar. Ihre u ­ mgebenden Parkplätze sind ­vergleichbar mit dem Parkraum eines Grossstadions.

Für den Bau wurde hoch­wertiges Material verwendet, unter anderem 15 ver­schiedene Marmorsorten (darunter Laaser Marmor) und auf­fällig viel Blattgold. Das Innere der Moschee ist mit einem 5627 Quadrat­meter grossen, handgeknüpften Teppich aus dem Iran ausgelegt, der 47 Tonnen schwer ist – darunter 35 Tonnen Wolle und 12 Tonnen Baumwolle. Auch er gilt als grösster seiner Art auf der Welt. Die Moschee ­schmücken zudem sieben Kronleuchter aus vergoldetem Messing und Edelstahl, die aus Deutschland importiert w ­ urden. Verarbeitet wurden auch ­tausende Swarovski-Kristalle, die tropfenförmig und in verschiedenen ­Farben ­gestaltet wurden. Als Lichtquelle ­dienen LEDs. Der grösste hat einen Durchmesser von zehn Metern und ist 15 Meter hoch. Er gilt als grösster Kronleuchter der Welt.

MAJESTIC STRUCTURES: THE MAGNIFICENT SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN MOSQUE

The Zayed Mosque is the third largest mosque in the world.

This sacred building is situated on a 56 ha plot on the south-east of the peninsula and is named after Emir Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a co-founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates whose grave is also located on the site. The mosque offers space for 40 000 ­worshippers inside its 224 � 174 m structure. The four minarets ­measure 107 m each and the main dome over the prayer room is 75 m high. This is the largest mosque dome in the world with a diameter of 32.2 m. 40 smaller domes have been ­positioned around the edge of the compact central structure. The construction costs for the site totalled 545 million dollars.

The parking around the edge is comparable with the parking space available at a large stadium. High quality ­materials have been used to make the building, including 15 different types of marble (including Lasa marble) and lots of striking gold leaf. The inside of the mosque features a 5627 m2 hand-woven carpet from Iran which weighs 47 tonnes – comprising 35 tonnes of wool and 12 tonnes of cotton. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The mosque is decorated with seven chandeliers in gold-plated brass and stainless steel imported from Germany. Thousands of Swarovski crystals have also been included in droplet shaped designs and a range of colours. LEDs serve as a light source. The largest is 10 m in diameter and 15 m high.

SPASS: DER WASSERPARK AUF YAS ISLAND

Die Yas Waterworld nimmt eine Fläche von ca. 15 Fuss­ ball­feldern ein. Mit seinen über vierzig A ­ ttraktionen – fünf davon einzigartig auf der Welt – bietet der f­ uturistische Wasserpark ein Ganztageserlebnis für die ganze Familie.

Diese einzigartige Freizeitanlage macht e ­ infach Spass, denn sie wartet mit rasanten Rutschen für ­waghalsige Draufgänger, wie auch mit gemächlich dahin­fliessenden Wasserkanälen auf, wo die Badegäste sich in riesigen Schwimmreifen sitzend gemütlich dahin treiben l­ assen können. Die 238 Meter lange, hydro­magnetisch an­ge­ triebene Tornado-Wasser­rutsche für sechs Personen ist die weltweit erste Anlage ihrer Art. Adrenalinsüchtige kommen im Bubble’s Barrel mit seinen drei Meter hohen Wellen auf ihre Kosten. Hier gibt’s zudem die weltweit längste surfbare Welle für Flowboards und Bodyboards.

Der 550 Meter lange ­Bandit Bomber ist die erste Achterbahn mit Wasser- und Lasereffekten. Auf der Fahrt kann man mit Wasser­strahlen auf Ziele schiessen, Wasser­ bomben werfen und Special Effects auslösen, während die unterhalb stehenden Zuschauer die Fahrgäste beim Vorbeifahren mit Wasser bespritzen. Auf der turmhohen Spitze von Jebel Dana, der den Park überragt und einen Durchmesser von acht Metern hat, thront eine ­gigantische Perle, das neueste Wahrzeichen von Yas Island. Der Park greift mit s­ einem Leitmotiv «Die verlorene Perle» auf das Kultur­erbe von Abu Dhabi zurück. Die Besucher folgen der Geschichte eines jungen Mädchens aus den Emiraten auf ihrer Suche nach der legendären Perle, wenn sie von Attraktion zu Attraktion gehen, zu denen ein Souk und eine Perlentaucher-Ausstellung gehören.

FUN: THE WATER PARK ON YAS ISLAND

15 football fields. With over 40 attractions on offer (5 of them unique in the world), this futuristic water park is an all-day experience for all the family. This unique leisure park is fun and includes fast slides for daredevil visitors as well as leisurely flowing water channels where visitors can float along on giant floating tyres. The 238 m long hydro-magnetically powered Tornado water slide for 6 people is the first of its kind in the world. Thrill-seekers will find what they are looking for at Bubble’s Barrel with its 3 m high waves. The world’s longest surfable wave for flowboards and bodyboards can also be found here. The 550 m long Bandit Bomber is the first rollercoaster with water and laser effects. During the ride, visitors can shoot at t­ argets with water jets, throw water bombs and trigger special effects while the spectators below spray the passengers with water as they go past. A gigantic pearl is featured at the tip of the Jebel Dana which towers over the park with a diameter of 8 m. This is the latest landmark of Yas Island. With its motto of »The lost pearl«, the park makes reference to the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi.

Visitors can follow the history of a young girl from the Emirates in search of the legendary pearl as they move from attraction to attraction including a souk and pearl diver exhibition.

Shopping ist denn auch so etwas wie ein nationaler Zeitvertreib, vielleicht gerade wegen der riesigen Vielfalt. Vom ultra-modernen Einkaufszentrum mit den neuesten Marken bis zum kleinen Souk mit t­ raditionellem Handwerk, Gewürzen und Teppichen findet man hier alles. Ob es eine diamantenbesetzte Uhr für tausende von Dollars sein soll oder lieber ein ­einfaches Modell aus dem Supermarkt, ob man Unsummen für ein «Haute-Couture» Kostüm ausgeben oder lieber den Stoff kaufen und den massgeschneiderten Anzug zu einem Schnäppchen­preis anfertigen lassen will, Abu Dhabi bietet jedem das gewünschte Einkaufserlebnis. Die beiden grössten Zentren sind die «Abu Dhabi Mall» in der Nähe des Beach Rotana Hotels und die «Marina Mall» am Wellenbrecherdamm. Diese überblickt die Corniche und bietet eine 100 Meter hohe Aussichtsplattform, eine Eislauffläche, eine Bowlingbahn, ein Cineplex, Musikbrunnen sowie Hunderte von Geschäften grosser Namen und Marken. In dieser Einkauf­serlebnis­welt kann man locker einen ganzen Tag beim ­Shopping verbringen, bevor man sich zum krönenden Abschluss ein Abendessen in einem der zahlreichen Restaurants gönnt. Der Souk am Central Market ist die moderne Re­inkarnation des niedergebrannten alten Souk Abu Dhabis. Dieser bestand früher aus einer Anzahl von kleinen schattigen Gässchen. Aus den offenen Märkten sind heute kleine Läden geworden, die Atmosphäre ist jedoch die gleiche geblieben. Der heutige Souk umfasst über 250 Geschäfte in traditioneller Umgebung mit modernem Touch. Besonders lohnend ist auch ein Besuch des iranischen Souks. Dort kann man Gewürze, Öle, getrocknete Kräuter und Safran kaufen. Das Handeln hat in der arabischen Welt eine uralte Tradition, welche auch heute noch aufrechterhalten wird.

CAPTIVATING: A PARADISE FOR SHOPPING ENTHUSIASTS Whether in the ultra-modern shopping centres with the latest fashion brands or in the small and traditional souks (Arab markets), Abu Dhabi is a paradise for all shopping fans. S ­ hopping is something of a national pastime here, perhaps due to the wide range of items on offer. From the ultra-modern shopping centre selling the latest brands to the small souk with traditional crafts, spices and carpets, you can find it all here. Whether a diamond-studded watch worth thousands of dollars or a simple model from the supermarket; whether you want to spend thousands on an »haute couture« suit or prefer to just buy the fabric and have it tailor-made for a fraction of the price, Abu Dhabi offers the perfect shopping experience for everyone. The two biggest centres are the »Abu Dhabi Mall« near the Beach Rotana Hotel and the »Marina Mall« at the breakwater dam. This overlooks the Corniche and offers a 100 m high viewing ­platform, an ice-rink, a bowling alley, a Cineplex, a musical fountain and hundreds of stores by the big names and brands.

Here in this shopping world, visitors can spend the whole day shopping before enjoying dinner at one of the many restaurants as the crowning finale. The souk at the central market is the modern reincarnation of the old souk of Abu Dhabi which burnt to the ground.

This previously comprised a number of small, shady alleyways. These open markets then became today’s small shops although the atmosphere remains the same. The current souk contains 250 shops in a traditional environment with a modern touch. A visit to the Iranian souk is particularly rewarding. Here v ­ isitors can purchase spices, oils, dried herbs and saffron. Trade has a long-­standing ­tradition in the Arab world which has been maintained until the present day.

Es werden Opernhäuser, Konzertsäle, ein neues Guggenheim-Museum und ein neuer Louvre gebaut. Abu Dhabi sieht sich als Versorgungs­zentrum der Region zwischen Afrika, Europa und Asien, in der Mitte der Wachstums­regionen und im Schnittpunkt von Tourismus, Handel und Transport. Im Gegensatz zu Dubai will das reichste der Emirate solider planen, schneller auf Fehler r­ eagieren und gross, aber nicht grössenwahnsinnig bauen.

Die 2004 von staatlicher Seite ins Leben gerufene Abu-Dhabi-Tourismus-Behörde trägt weitreichende Verantwortung für die Entwicklung und Förderung des Tourismus im Emirat Abu Dhabi. Dies zeigt auf, dass der Staat fest entschlossen ist, Abu Dhabi einen Platz im internationalen Tourismus zu sichern. Als gehobenes Reiseziel mit hervorragenden touristischen ­Einrichtungen für Urlauber und Geschäftsreisende soll dem Emirat eine blühende Zukunft bevorstehen.

WHAT COMES AFTER OIL?

The unprecedented boom in the Emirates began with the discovery of oil. But what happens once these sources of oil have been depleted? The post-oil period has long begun already in the UAE. There is an awareness that these oil stores are limited and so there has been a shift towards more forward-thinking branches of the economy – in ­particular tourism. The two most important ­emirates, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are currently on their way to becoming a centre for international tourism, trade and finance in order to be well equipped for the future. The once modest and small harbour towns have developed into m ­ odern administrative and service centres which have become popular destinations for modern tourism.

While Dubai impresses with superlatives and pompous buildings, Abu Dhabi appeals with its culture in particular.

Opera houses, concert halls, a new Guggenheim museum and a new Louvre are being built here. Abu Dhabi sees itself as a supply centre for the region between Africa, Europe and Asia at the heart of the growth regions and at the interface of tourism, trade and transport. Unlike Dubai, the richest of the emirates wants to implement more secure planning, react faster to errors and build large but not ­megalomaniac structures. The Abu Dhabi tourist board was founded by the state in 2004 and bears primary responsibility for the development and promotion of tourism in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. This shows that the state has firmly decided to secure Abu Dhabi a place on the international tourism scene. The emirate faces a ­blossoming future as a sophisticated travel destination with exceptional tourism facilities for holidaymakers and business travellers.

Die Kapitalmarktzinsen liegen – trotz einiger Bewegung im Jahr 2013 – weltweit nahe an den historischen Tiefstständen.

Die Markt­t eil­n ehmer finden kaum Anlagemöglichkeiten am Rentenmarkt. Hohe Renditen bieten lediglich riskante Schwellenmärkte und Unternehmens­a nleihen mit tiefer Bonität. Auch 2014 bleibt der Weg aus dem Zinstal steinig. Das moderate Wachstum bei ­tiefem Inflations­risiko erlaubte es den Zentralbanken, weiterhin eine e ­ xpansive Geldpolitik zu fahren.

Insgesamt wird sich der Expansions­grad jedoch verringern.

Zu erwarten ist, dass die US FED ihre Anleihenkäufe in 2014 weiter zurückfährt und allenfalls sogar ganz einstellen wird. Die Rentenmärkte dürften ihre extreme Phase der Niedrigzinsen hinter sich lassen, was zu Kursverlusten führen wird. Erste Anzeichen für die steigenden Renditen sind aufgrund der Kapitalflüsse der Schwellenmärkte auszumachen. Grundsätzlich lässt sich darum sagen, dass die Planung und Verwaltung eines Vermögens immer mehr etwas höchst Persönliches bleiben muss.

Neben der individuellen Planung gehört zudem noch ein zweiter ­wichtiger Grundsatz dazu: Die maximale Flexibilität im Investment­ansatz für die gewählten Portfolios. Denn aufgrund der schnell möglichen Veränderungen in der Finanzwelt reicht es nicht mehr aus, in starre Finanzkonzepte zu investieren. Mehr denn je gilt heute das Prinzip, sofort auf unvorhersehbare Markt­ ereignisse reagieren zu können. Nur mit solchen Grundsätzen kann ein Vermögensverwalter sowohl in guten wie in schwierigen Börsenzeiten gesamtheitlich und im Sinne der Kunden reagieren.

Despite some fluctuations in 2013, capital market interest rates across the world are close to their all-time historic low. Market participants have identified few opportunities for investment on the bond market. High rates of return are only offered by risky emerging markets and corporate bonds with a low credit rating.

Getting out of this interest rate slump remains a difficult prospect in 2014 too. Moderate growth with a low inflation risk enabled the central banks to pursue an expansionary monetary policy. The degree of expansion will be reduced overall. It is expected that the US FED will cut back on and maybe even halt its bond purchases in 2014. The bond markets should leave behind their extreme low interest rate phase which will lead to exchange losses. The first signs of increasing returns can be identified from the flows of capital on the emerging markets. It can essentially be said that planning and managing assets remains a highly personal matter.

There is also a second important principle involved in addition to the individual planning: maximum flexibility in the investment approach of selected portfolios. Given the fast-changing pace of the financial world, it is no longer sufficient to invest in fixed financial concepts. The principle of being able to react to unforeseen market events applies today more than ever before. Only these principles will enable an asset manager to react holistically and on behalf of the customer in both positive and negative stock market conditions.

Im Foyer werden Hotelgäste mit zwei ­großen ­Gouachen von Sol LeWitt begrüßt, die wie «­Appetizer» vor dem g ­ roßen, 53-Quadrat­ meter-Wandgemälde in der Rezeptionshalle wirken. Das Gemälde wurde speziell von Sol LeWitt für ­diesen Ort geschaffen. Ein weiteres Auftragswerk stammt von Heinz Mack. Sein Gemälde ist sowohl von der Lobby Lounge als auch von der ­Rezeption zu sehen. ­

total of 91 pieces have been carefully selected and are on display throughout the hotel and you can enjoy works by notable artists such as Sol LeWitt, Heinz Mack, Serge Poliakoff, Ossip Zadkine, Günther Uecker and many others. These pieces do not conform to the aggressive, confrontational style that characterises much of modern art. Instead a concept more in keeping with the hotel and based around noble elegance and beauty has been developed. From the moment the guest enters the foyer they are welcomed by two large Sol LeWitt gouaches. These act as an »appetizer« for the stunning 53 square metre mural in the reception hall.

This pieces was specially commissioned from Sol LeWitt.

From the Lobby Lounge you have a perfect view of another ­commissioned piece: the nine square metre Heinz Mack painting. S ­ ituated above the display table this single artwork can be seen from both Lobby Lounge and the Reception Hall.

Arbeiten von Hans ­H artung, Serge ­P oliakoff, ­Eduardo ­Chillida, Piero ­Dorazio, ­Günther Uecker und Lynn Chadwick fallen den Betrachtern in den Lift­lobbys ins Auge und setzen damit Akzente in jeder der sechs Etagen, die auch den Gästen helfen sollen, ihre Zimmer optisch abzurufen.

In »parkhuus«, the hotel restaurant, the wine library and in the private dinning area, works by Günther Uecker and Hans Hartung are on display. Even the restrooms and vestibules throughout the hotel are decorated, p ­ erhaps appropriately, with cartoons and caricatures.

These humoristic messages are partly originals by Ted Scapa and partly limited-edition reproductions from the Cartoon and C ­ aricature Museum, Basel. Lighter, softer accents have been used in the spa, gym and meeting rooms of the mezzanine level. There are poetic works by Piero Dorazio and Giuseppe Santomaso as well as an impressive series of twelve original multilayer photo pieces by Anne Blum. Take the lift to any of the six floors and you will find that the lift lobbies includes workds by Hans ­H artung, Serge ­P oliakoff, Eduardo Chillida, Piero Doazio, Günther Uecker and Lynn Chadwick. These pieces add to the friendly and calm atmosphere and help the guests to visually recall their location within the hotel.

ounting up all the models produced by this car brand from Staines, Middlesex, since it was first founded in 1904 would take up far more space than there is room for here. However one thing which does deserve a mention is undoubtedly the ­company’s ­magnificent victory over Bentley and Alfa Romeo during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1935. W. O. Bentley was persuaded to hand over his brand to the competitor Rolls Royce and joined Lagonda as a designer. Before developing his own engines for the brand, he fitted a M45R Rapide model with a modified 4.5 litre 6-cylinder Meadows engine which raced to a widely documented victory in the prestigious Le Mans long-distance race.

Bentley liebte grosse drehmomentstarke Motoren, sodass 1937 ein 4,4 Liter DOHC V-12 auf Kiel gelegt wurde. Die damit aus­ge­rüsteten Modelle gehörten mit zum E ­ xklusivsten, was man damals fahren konnte. ­Leider blieb der dramatisch gestylten Le Mans Version der erneute Sieg verwehrt, doch zählen sie heute zu den begehrtesten Sammler­objekten.

1947 – ZUSAMMENSCHLUSS VON LAGONDA UND ASTON MARTIN

Der Industrielle David Brown (Traktoren, Getriebe) hatte 1947 bereits die kriselnde Sportwagen-Manufaktur Aston Martin übernommen, welche zwar über ein leistungs­ fähiges Chassis, aber nur etwas lauwarme 2-Liter-­Motoren verfügte. So war es eine glückliche Fügung, dass er nur wenige Monate später auch Lagonda kaufen konnte, wo W. O. Bentley einen feinen 6-Zylinder mit 2,6 Liter und zwei oben­liegenden Nockenwellen konstruiert hatte, und damit den Grundstein für die Vermählung dieser beiden traditionsreichen Marken legte.

Lagonda wie auch Aston Martin bauten den neuen ­Reihen 6-Zylinder in ihre Wagen ein, wobei Lagonda die ­Touring-Kundschaft und Aston Martin die Sportler bediente.

Bentley loved large high-torque engines and so in 1937 developed a 4.4 litre DOHC V-12 engine. Models fitted with this engine were among the most exclusive on offer.

Unfortunately the dramatically styled Le Mans Version missed out on victory but remains one of the most soughtafter collector’s items even today.

1947 – MERGER OF LAGONDA AND ASTON MARTIN

In 1947, the industrialist David Brown (tractors, gear units) took over the struggling sports car manufacturer Aston Martin which had a high-performance chassis but only mediocre 2 litre engines. And so it was a stroke of good fortune that he was able to purchase Lagonda a few months later too where W. O. Bentley had designed a refined 6-cylinder 2.6 litre engine with two overhead camshafts, thereby laying the foundations for the merging of these two traditional brands.

Lagonda, like Aston Martin, incorporated the new 6-cylinder series into its vehicles with Lagonda serving the touring client base and Aston Martin supplying sports cars.

Unter der geschickten Führung von Dr. Ulrich Bez baute A ­ ston ­M artin zahlreiche sehr erfolgreiche GT‑Modelle mit eigenen Aluminium-Motoren (4,2 bzw.

4,7 Liter-V8, und 6,0 Liter V12). Beide Motoren bewiesen ihre Leistungs­f ähigkeit und Zu­verlässigkeit in zahl­ reichen Rennen rund um den Globus, ­darunter auch den heiss um­kämpften 24 Stunden von Le Mans. Das ge­flügelte Lagonda-Emblem erschien 2009 ­nochmals kurz in Genf, an einem vorwiegend für die ost­euro­päischen ­Staaten vorgesehenen SUV, welcher aber nicht um­gesetzt wurde.

Lagondas traditioneller «Rapide»-Name findet sich seit 2009 auf den Flanken von Aston Martins 4-türigem Modell, welches die herrlichen Linien des DB9 über ­dessen verlängerte Bodengruppe streckt.

Following the release of various high-performance saloon cars fitted with Aston Martin technology and aluminium bodies (only offered in small hand-made series), an ultrafuturistic model designed by William Towns was launched in 1976 which served as a template for the latest creation from the company due to its successful proportions.

Under the skilled direction of Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston ­Martin produced numerous very successful GT m ­ odels with their own aluminium engines (4.2 or 4.7 litre V8 and 6.0 litre V12). Both engines demonstrated their performance and reliability in various races across the globe including the hotly contested 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The winged Lagonda symbol appeared briefly again in Geneva in 2009 on an SUV, predominantly intended for the C ­ entral Eastern Eurpoean countries, but which could not be implemented.

Lagonda’s traditional »Rapide« name has been ­featured on the sides of Aston Martin’s 4-door model since 2009, continuing the beautiful lines of the DB9 across the extended undercarriage.

as Cannes Yachting Festival steht traditionell im Zentrum der weltweit besten Yachtenbauer. Zwischen den über 500 Trends und Neuheiten im Vieux Port und im Port Pierre Canto von Cannes fällt einem sofort eine ganz spezielle Werft auf. Denn in diesem Jahr hat sich die Dominator Yachts gleich selbst übertroffen: Sie lud zu einer einmaligen und ebenso ausser­ gewöhnlichen Show, in welcher die attraktivsten Models auf einem schwimmenden Laufsteg den geladenen Gästen schönste Abend­ kleider des Designers Julien Macdonald präsentierten. Als absolutes ­Highlight stellte die österreichisch-italienische Werft zudem – neben der Dominator 640, 720 und 780 – erstmals das neue Konzept der neuen Dominator D26 Ilumen vor.

he Cannes Yachting Festival is a focal point for the world’s best yacht manufacturers. One yacht company in particular stands out among the 500 + trends and new products at the Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes. Dominator Yachts has excelled itself this year: it invited guests to a unique and exceptional show where some attractive models presented beautiful evening dresses by designer Julien Macdonald to the guests on a floating catwalk. As an absolute highlight – in addition to the Dominator 640, 720 and 780 – the Austrian-Italian shipyard introduced the new concept for the new Dominator D26 Ilumen.

A FAMILY BUSINESS BETWEEN A FASHION SHOW AND DOMINATOR YACHTS

Together with the on-site event partners (Rolls Royce, Julien Macdonald, Calvisius Caviar and Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial), siblings Angela and Christoph Pernsteiner introduced some fantastic talent in the form of high calibre products at a unique and attractive trade fair stand in Cannes. Before the real highlight started – the Fashion Show – the »boss« and owner of Dominator, Dr. August Wolfgang Pernsteiner, explained the technical details of the new Ilumen D26.

Shortly before the impressive show, the designer of the new Dominator D26 Ilumen, Alberto Mancini, discussed the challenging task of transferring the original mega-yacht concept to a 26 m yacht.

Das Design, also auch die Linienführung, wirkt kompakter und progressiver als noch bei der Dominator 640, 720 und 780. Trotzdem versichert der Designer, dass der Auftritt immer attraktiv und zeitlos wirken werde, weil sowohl die gesamte Anmutung als auch die Dimensionen einzigartig und anderswo nur auf Megayachten zu finden sind. Sogar das Antriebssystem ist eher selten für die Grösse dieser Yacht, überzeugt aber umso mehr: Die D26 Ilumen verfügt über einen Hybrid-Antrieb. Gefahren wird in einem der vier «Modi», entweder in reinem Elektro-«eDrive», im Hybrid-Modus, mit integriertem Dieselmotor – oder gar im Sportmodus.

The design (i.e. the lines) appears more compact and progressive than in the Dominator 640, 720 and 780. Despite this, the designer has ensured that the presentation is always attractive and timeless because the overall look and dimensions are unique and are only generally found on mega-yachts. Even the propulsion system is rare considering the size of the yacht and is therefore all the more impressive: the D26 Ilumen comes with a hybrid drive. The yacht is driven in one of the four »modes« – either using the pure electronic »eDrive«, the hybrid mode, the integrated diesel engine or sports mode.

QUALITY AS A CONCEPT

QUALITÄT ALS KONZEPT

Seit dem Frühjahr 2010 ist Dominator durch eine neue Eigen­ tümerstruktur gekennzeichnet und erstrahlt in neuem Licht. Nach dem Motto «nimm das Beste, das existiert, und mach es ­besser», ­w urden das Modell D640 komplett neu entworfen, zahlreiche andere ­D ominator-Modelle gebaut und verbessert. Der Yachtmarkt goutiert diese neue Dominator-Philosophie durch zahl­reiche Aus­zeichnungen wie z.B. «Robb Report Best of the Best» oder die «World Yacht Trophies». Und wenn man sich heute denn auch genauer mit einer Dominator befasst, ist es gar nicht schwierig, das Konzept zu verstehen, welches der Dominator-Inhaber, Wolfgang ­Pernsteiner, gleich selbst erklärt: «Als ich vor vielen Jahren persönlich nach dem besten Design, Qualität und vor allem nach der ­besten ­Technologie in einer Yacht suchte, kaufte ich mir nach einigen «Fehlgriffen» schliesslich eine ­Dominator.» Das Konzept, «nur das Beste ist gut genug», beeindruckte den heutigen «Patron» so sehr, dass er beschloss, die Dominator-Werft zu über­nehmen. Mit seinem Engagement übernahm er damit auch die Philosophie: «Wir wollen einfach, dass unsere Kunden eine konkurrenz­lose Yacht erhalten.»

ZEHN BIS FÜNFZEHN YACHTEN PRO JAHR

Es ist klar, die ursprüngliche Philosophie des «Patrons» wurde zur Firmen­philosophie und hat damit Gültigkeit für alle DominatorModelle. Auf dieser Grundlage wollen die Firmeneigentümer nun rund zehn bis fünfzehn Yachten pro Jahr bauen. Dafür soll der Kunde noch mehr im Zentrum stehen und in den Genuss von italienischer Kreativität und deutscher Ingenieurs-Qualität kommen. Dabei wird besonders auf die Detailverarbeitung geachtet. Feinste Materialien werden bei Dominator auf perfekte Art und Weise verarbeitet. Das Resultat ist sodann eine Gesamtqualität, welche auch nach Jahren ein wertvolles und begrenzt verfügbares Original bleiben wird. Durch diese limitierte Produktion behält eine Dominator ihren Wert und das ist schliesslich für den Eigen­tümer ein wichtiges Argument, da diese Käufer gerade heute immer mehr die nachhaltigen Investitionen schätzen!

Dominator has had a new ownership structure since spring 2010 and now shines in a new light. True to the motto »Take the best that exists and make it better«, model D640 has been completely redesigned, and numerous other Dominator models have been built and improved. The yacht market has appreciated this new philosophy of Dominator’s with numerous awards, such »Robb Report Best of the Best« or »World Yacht Trophies«. And looking at a Dominator in more detail, it is not difficult to understand the concept, as Dominator owner Wolfgang Pernsteiner explains: »When I began to search for the best design, quality and technology in a yacht many years ago, I finally purchased a Dominator after a few false starts«. The concept of »only the best is good enough« impressed the current »boss« so much that he decided to take over the Dominator shipyard. And thanks to his commitment, he adopted the company philosophy too. »We simply want our customers to obtain a unique and unrivalled yacht«.

BETWEEN 10 AND 15 YACHTS PER YEAR

It is clear that the original philosophy of the »boss« has become the company philosophy and therefore applies to all of the Dominator models. On this basis, the company owners want to produce between 10 and 15 yachts per year. This should place the focus more on the customer and tap into the Italian creativity and German quality engineering. Special attention is also paid to the detailed processing.

Only the finest materials are applied and perfectly processed in the Dominator. The result is exceptional overall quality and a valuable and limited edition original, even many years later. A Dominator retains its value and this is a persuasive sales argument for the buyer because buyers today are increasingly seeking a sustainable investment!
