RELAX ON A MULTIGENERATIONAL

WELLNESS VACATION

From innovative biohacking treatments to natural hot springs in the U.S., consider these tranquil ideas for a wellness vacation

While travel among families is always popular, it has become more intentional with a focus on health and well-being. Enjoying a wellness vacation is trending among families with tweens, teenagers and collegeage kids for several reasons.

People are looking to unplug from everyday stressors like global conflicts, work, school- and home-life balance and economic uncertainty. Here is the perfect opportunity to bond with loved ones while treating yourselves to a healthy trip together. Even holistic programs have shifted to focus on unique types of therapies, innovative treatments and tech-driven sessions.

In this article, we’ll cover rejuvenation practices sure to please multigenerational families with teens and young adults, and what you need for a successful, healthy vacation. Discover destinations around the U.S. that offer relaxation, innovative spa treatments and natural healing resources, plus tips for planning a soothing wellness vacation.

EVOLUTION OF A WELLNESS VACATION

Oftentimes, people experience fatigue after a trip. This is because the planning and execution of a group getaway can be stressful. Taking a wellness vacation, however, is different in that the purpose is to relieve stress and promote overall health.

In the past, a typical wellness getaway consisted of staying at a resort that included a spa. Today, multigenerational groups with young adult members have numerous options for diverse wellnessfocused activities that branch out from the usual spa trips.

MULTIGENERATIONAL WELLNESS VACATIONS

DIVERSE WELLNESS VACATION OPTIONS

With so many unique and dynamic experiences, these trending practices are great ideas suitable for multigenerational groups:

• Biohacking spa treatments

• Natural hot springs

• Outdoor physical and mental wellness activities

• Forest bathing

• Oceanic healing

WHAT IS BIOHACKING?

An idea that has reinvented the wellness industry is known as biohacking. Wellness resorts, retreats and spas around the country offer biohacking programs coupled with healthy nutrition, traditional spa treatments and pioneering beauty technologies.

At its core, biohacking incorporates key components in everyday life, including optimal sleep, hydration, natural light exposure, a grounding in nature, breathing exercises, nutrition, physical activity and movement paired with advanced technology. Touchless treatments like sound therapies and zero-gravity stress-reducing apparatuses can be paired with classic spa rituals and natural amenities to create a wellrounded experience.

BIOHACKING TREATMENT OPTIONS

Biohacking spa services are “scientifically proven evidence-based treatments” offered at many wellness resorts around the world. Therapies in this category can include but are not limited to:

• LPG Endermologie – a unisex natural and painless anti-aging treatment.

The patented technique of cellular stimulation through mechanical massaging was introduced in France.

• LED and infrared light therapy –a restorative facial using LED or infrared light that diminishes pores, obliterates acne and tightens skin.

• Anti-gravity beds – help to relieve joint pressure throughout the body. Usually, this is done while meditating or restoring sleep or through other biohacking therapies.

• HigherDose Mats – used at the Fairmount Spa Century Plaza in Los Angeles, to support the body’s natural recovery process using Magnetic Field Therapy, healing crystals and heat.

BIOHACKING IN HAWAII

The Hawaiian Islands are home to luxurious resorts that cater to guests’ well-being with natural island assets and biohacking options.

Kauai’s 1 Hotels Hanalei Bay welcomes guests with a shot of B-12 before heading to their Wellness Suites, which are dedicated to rejuvenation and ultimate relaxation. Other offerings include an infrared sauna, a float tank, a hyperbaric chamber, meditation pods and more.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea offers a multi-day Longevity Protocol experience with stem cell therapy and NAD+ IV drips (known as the fountain of youth). They also offer cutting-edge therapies to optimize the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

MULTI-GEN WELLNESS VACATIONS AT NATURAL HOT SPRINGS IN THE U.S.

Ecopsychology is the relationship between human beings and the natural world. Understanding this connection allows us to utilize Mother Nature’s healing properties right at our fingertips.

A timeless and ever-popular way to rejuvenate is at the many natural hot springs in the U.S. For those craving a wellness vacation in the wilderness, Mother Nature provides geothermal pools that have been used for healing purposes for thousands of years.

Find natural hot springs in the U.S. at the following locations:

• Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas

• The town of Hot Springs, North Carolina

• Montezuma Hot Springs , six miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada

• The town of Desert Hot Springs, California

• Warm Mineral Springs in North Point, Florida

• Olympic Hot Springs throughout Olympic National Park in Washington State

provide additional outdoor activities suitable for all ages.

The Omni Homestead Resort in Virginia welcomes families to soak in the Warm Springs Pools. Gentlemen’s and Lady's Bathhouses allow groups to sit in the high-mineral-content, bodytemperature water for 50 minutes with a reservation. Archeological evidence proves that the springs have been used by humans for at least 9,000 years.

Castle Hot Springs is an all-inclusive desert oasis set among millenniaold natural hot springs in Morristown, Arizona. They welcome families with kids 16 and older to heal, socialize, bathe and go on a spiritual journey in the mineralrich waters. Their properties include lithium, magnesium and bicarbonates, which help to naturally improve mood, calm the mind, and soothe aching joints and muscles.

Previously used as a Christian Bible college, a Jewish resort and a commune, the resort features 50 geothermal pools on 46 lush acres. The waters are rich in minerals, including potassium, sodium, silica and boron, which are known to revitalize skin, help with circulation and boost overall mood. In addition, the resort features a family-friendly pool and a kids menu. The healing waters bubble up out of the ground at a range of 125-130 degrees Fahrenheit before being cooled to a safe 104 degrees for guests to soak.

OUTDOOR WELLNESS VACATION IDEAS FOR FAMILIES

Aside from natural healing springs, many hotels and resorts around the country offer unique revitalization practices also found in nature. Thanks to geographic location and natural landscapes at hand, oftentimes, accommodations tap into them providing one-of-a-kind experiences in tranquil settings.

FOREST BATHING

Forest bathing is the practice of immersing in a dense forest to practice mindfulness in nature. Originating in Japan, the tradition of Shinrin-Yoku has been proven to alleviate stress and improve overall mind and body health. Many locations around the country offer the perfect atmosphere for such an activity.

WHERE TO BATHE IN WILD FORESTS

• Humboldt Redwoods State Park, CA – The impressive “Avenue of the Giants” mesmerizes visitors before transporting them into a magnificent, ancient setting full of gigantic redwoods, fresh air and wildlife.

• Olympic National Park, WA –America’s only temperate rainforest provides a pristine opportunity to get lost among giant ferns, pillowy-soft moss-covered ground, towering pines and bigleaf maples.

• Pocono Mountains, PA – Families coming to the Poconos can forest bathe with professionals at The Lodge at Woodloch, offering guided hikes into the wilderness with lessons in forest bathing and mindfulness.

MULTIGENERATIONAL WELLNESS VACATIONS

OCEANIC HEALING

The briny salt air, vitamin-rich sunshine, salt water and soft sand are all mood lifters with many healing properties. While some family members on a beach vacation may choose to try a new beauty craze, others may seek the ocean for healing. Luckily, many resorts in the U.S. that are located near the ocean tend to offer the best of both worlds. The healing salty sea atmosphere, plenty of outdoor activities, advanced spa technologies and new-age techniques combined with healthy menus provide options for everyone.

WELLNESS RESORTS ON THE OCEAN

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort is located steps from the Atlantic Ocean with stretches of soft sand to sink your toes into. Carillon Miami offers health retreats, touchless treatments, a spa and fitness center, thermal therapy, energy healing sessions, cryotherapies and more. Work out inside the gym with a view of the expansive ocean or clear your mind on the beach during a yoga or mindful breathing session. Vibrant flavors and fresh ingredients make healthy eating the forefront of their savory on-site restaurants.

Montage Palmetto Bluff is a stunning resort in Bluffton, South Carolina, and a Lowcountry dreamscape full of outdoor activities to heal the body, mind and soul. The expansive 20,000 acres provide relaxing avocations like fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and hiking through marshlands ripe with wildlife. Guests can use the on-site bicycles and explore the vast property, perfect for restless teenagers. Family members can also enjoy birdwatching opportunities together along the saltwater marshes. Additionally, a world-class fitness center and swimming pool allow grandparents to splash and swim with their grandkids. Multiple on-site restaurants offer diverse, healthy and fresh food options for all ages and palates.

PLANNING A MULTIGENERATIONAL VACATION IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

While there are many wellnessfocused destinations around the country, only some allow teens and young adults to enjoy their healing amenities. Additionally, certain activities may not appeal to every member of your group.

What should you consider when planning a multigenerational wellness vacation?

1. Determine the type of wellness vacation everyone is interested in. There are many diverse experiences offered at wellness resorts and spas, such as biohacking treatments, natural amenities like hot springs, innovative beauty technology, yoga and meditation, traditional spa treatments and beach retreats. Be sure to consider the ages of family members attending the trip as some resorts are adults-only while others welcome teens and young adults.

2. Create a budget that allows for multiple treatments and healthoriented programs. Many allinclusive wellness resorts include access to their spa, fitness center and other amenities, while specific treatments and sessions may be an additional cost.

3. Plan ahead and book your trip well in advance to secure spa treatments, classes and other sessions. Be sure to know any seasonal options during certain times of the year before booking.

4. Research spa treatments and wellness activities offered at your accommodation. Are they suitable

for tweens, college-aged and older family members? Consider choosing a location that offers an array of services.

5. Reservations are required at most spas and resorts with some offering family group experiences. Ask about group pricing when booking activities and accommodation.

6. Pack accordingly for the types of wellness activity options. Consider workout clothing, hiking shoes, proper outdoor gear, etc. This may also include leaving behind your computer and tablet for a combination digital detox.

7. Be open-minded to new self-care practices. Try yoga, meditation, manifestation, hypnosis or other unfamiliar activities and treatments.

8. Explore healthy nutrition options the whole group will enjoy, whether this is on-site or outside of your accommodation. Typically, nutrition and healthy eating habits are incorporated into wellness packages, including kid and teenappropriate menus.

It’s always a great time to invest in family bonding with multiple generations in tow. The point of a vacation is to relax, and an intentional wellness vacation will give groups just that and so much more. DR

FAMILY TRAVEL PROS SHARE TIPS

FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION

From ranches and resorts to Disney and Dollywood, experts share multigenerational family travel tips to help you plan and make the most of your time

We’ve consulted with some of the top multigenerational family travel experts in the industry. They’ve generously shared their wisdom and family travel tips on how to find the best accommodation that suits each group and occasion. The task of

navigating the diverse landscape of family structures and accommodation choices can be daunting, but with the guidance of these leading professionals, you’ll be wellequipped. They’ve crafted experiences that not only withstand generational differences but flourish amidst the delightful cacophony of family travel.

FAMILY TRAVEL ADVISORS SPILL THE BEANS ON HOW TO BEGIN PLANNING

Let’s cut to the chase. Everyone knows how much goes into planning a family trip, no matter what size and scale or occasion. What they may not know, however, are the more intricate questions to ask themselves before even reaching out to a family travel advisor.

Angie Wheeler, Co-owner of The Unique Traveler with Kristi Howard, advises families to first “have a sit-down with the whole group before contacting your travel advisor and figure out the best times for the group.” She also says, “If this trip is to celebrate an important milestone, make sure that is the first thing you tell your advisor.”

Getting your ducks in a row will help your advisor understand the needs and wishes of your group. In fact, Jessica Griscavage, mom and founder and CEO of Runway Travel agrees that asking the right questions is the most important first step. She has been providing outstanding family travel opportunities to places like Japan and Grand Cayman for multigenerational groups for decades. She recommends asking, “Are they celebrating a milestone, an anniversary, a celebration, or is this simply to have the family together?” Maybe it’s a multigenerational gathering with teenagers, grandparents, aunts, and uncles in tow or a quiet vacation with Mom and Grandma. Whatever the occasion, consider those who will be attending and what the trip will ultimately look like for everyone.

CONSIDER AGE-APPROPRIATE ACCOMMODATION STYLES AND ACTIVITIES

The second consideration is your family’s base camp for the duration of the trip. But asking your travel advisor which accommodation is their favorite would not be realistic. There isn’t any single hotel, resort or other option that’s a perfect fit for every group. A wide selection of diverse family accommodation options is available, catering to many group styles and celebrations.

Kristin Luz, owner of Family Travel and Adventures, knows a lot about the intricacies of planning a family trip and finding the perfect home away from home. Specializing in multigenerational trips to Europe, Costa Rica, and the U.S., Kristen shares her wisdom for finding the right digs.

“When considering a resort for a family reunion or other multigenerational vacation, some things I suggest folks consider include a variety of room types with different configurations.”

She explains that while some groups are comfortable in standard hotel accommodations, families with babies and teenagers might want more privacy and space. Kristin suggests families explore options that include connecting rooms for semi-privacy and suite-style setups.

RESEARCH AGE-APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES

Kristen also advises looking for accommodation options with “activities and amenities on-site but also nearby.” This could include resorts, hotels, and

other lodging with pools and spas, kids’ programming, games and other childfriendly activities. Don’t forget to investigate on- and off-site dining options that will appeal to the age range of your group.

“At the same time,” she adds, “selecting a location that also has attractions nearby offers a nice variety to the reunion. This could be a cute town for wandering and wine-tasting, a national or state park for exploring, or a city for fun activities like a food or bike tour.”

EAST AND WEST COAST MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILY ACCOMMODATIONS

Angie reveals several places she’d recommend for an exceptional multigenerational gathering, depending on your group’s needs, style and occasion.

EAST COAST BEACH RESORT FOR FAMILY GROUPS

Folks on the East Coast should check out the Omni at Hilton Head on beautiful Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, according to Angie.

“It has a kids' camp, accommodations

for the whole family, golf, swimming, a great beach, dining and a spa. You can also take day trips to nearby Savannah or Charleston.”

Nearby island adventures include Zipline Hilton Head 8 miles away, offering canopy tours and eco-adventures, and Palmetto Dunes Golf, Tennis and Pickleball, only a mile down the road. There are also several marinas offering boat tours for families looking to get out on the water.

WEST COAST OPTIONS FOR FAMILIES

Angie says, “On the West Coast, a great option is the Hotel Del Coronado, which has a wonderful beach, where you can have a bonfire or attend a movie on the beach on certain dates.” Families can also take part in kids’ programs and surf lessons suitable for anyone willing to give it a go at this historic hotel.

If a wild experience is what you’re looking for, Angie suggests heading west to Montana and The Resort at Paws Up . Family-friendly for all ages, the resort offers great on-site dining and a rejuvenating spa, surrounded by wilderness as far as the eye can see. There are also special activities for the little ones and outdoor adventures like horseback riding, hiking and fishing.

Jessica also knows a thing or two about ranch stays and advises about possible age limits, saying, “Ranches are a fantastic getaway for multigenerational trips; however, a lot of times the activities

are really only appropriate for children starting at seven or eight years old.”

CRUISES ARE BUILT FOR FAMILY TRAVEL

Jessica with Runway Travel explains, “Cruising is an excellent option for multigenerational travel. Families can travel to multiple countries with only having to unpack once.” She says, “Families can pick and choose excursions with their interests and their pace,” adding that groups typically gather for dinner.

“Cruising can be anything from a large ship with all of the bells and whistles to expeditions exploring unique and remote destinations,” Jessica says. In fact, many families consider taking a multigenerational cruise to celebrate special events and milestones because they have something for every age to enjoy.

THEMED MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILY ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

The first place that comes to everyone’s mind with a mention of themed vacation destinations is Disney World. Angie acknowledges that Orlando is a super family-friendly and popular destination, whether for fans of Mickey Mouse, Harry Potter and everything in between.

In fact, she assures, “Both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando are great for families. There are accommodations for everyone, the parks have more than you can possibly fit into a day or three, and each has an entertainment,

‘‘
I’d say the biggest advice I have for someone planning a family reunion is to remember that not everyone is traveling on your budget.

shopping and dining district beyond the parks themselves.”

Angie also suggests Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, for unique multigenerational gatherings. This familyoriented resort offers delicious dining options, children’s rides, and, of course, music. The resort is also conveniently located near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which offers hiking opportunities and provides a one-of-akind scenic drive.

FAMILY TRAVEL TIPS FOR BUDGETING AND EARLY PLANNING

For Angie, “It’s important to find out the whole dynamic and have one contact for the family." This comes in the form of having a sit-down with everyone to discuss the reasons for the trip.

According to Kristin, “I’d say the biggest advice I have for someone planning a family reunion is to remember that not everyone is traveling on your budget. Have a frank conversation with anticipated guests about the budget, particularly those you know are more cost-sensitive." When budgeting your trip, it’s important to consider accommodation options discussed among the group as they tend to be the biggest expense.

When helping families plan magical trips, Jessica says, “Budget and destination are always the next conversation. I have to make sure that what they are looking for will work in their budget. Sometimes a villa will work best for a group and sometimes a cruise or an all-inclusive will be the best option.”

In the words of Angie Wheeler, “Pack your patience, treasure being with your family and making memories together and you will have a great vacation.” DR

ALL-INCLUSIVE FAMILY TRIPS

Family reunions are fantastic ways to reconnect, strengthen bonds and create cherished memories together. That’s one of the many reasons why multigenerational travel and group gatherings of family and friends are some of this year’s top travel trends. Choosing an all-inclusive property for your family makes the entire experience easier and hassle-free.

Identifying the right all-inclusive property is key, as it sets the stage for fostering family unity and making meaningful connections at your reunion. The ideal spot will have activities and amenities to make every generation happy. Here are 10 tips for selecting an outstanding all-inclusive property for your family reunion.

1THINK ABOUT THE TYPES OF ALL-INCLUSIVE VACATION EXPERIENCES

When thinking of all-inclusive trips, visions of tropical beaches often come to mind. While there are many fabulous allinclusive beach properties, palm-studded strands are only part of the picture. There are all-inclusive resorts for all kinds of multigenerational family vacations, from lakefront properties and Western dude ranches to mountain resorts and safari lodges. Some family-friendly cruise lines offer floating all-inclusive options for reunions as well.

Whether you’d prefer to relax along sandy shores or spend your time enjoying mountain adventures, there are allinclusive resorts perfect for your family reunion. Talk with everyone in your group to determine their preferences.

Fun-filled evenings at Colorado's all-inclusive Vista Verde Ranch can include dancing and live music.

Families enjoy sailing on Lake Teedyuskung at Woodloch Resort in Pennsylvania.

2START PLANNING THE FAMILY REUNION EARLY AND CONSIDER TIME OF YEAR

It’s important to start well in advance when planning your family group vacation. Travel advisors and other experts recommend beginning the process at least 10 months to a year ahead to find a time that works for everyone and secure the best rates and availability. An early start also makes it easier to obtain rooms close together or possibly arrange a complete buy-out of an allinclusive lodge or dude ranch.

Determine when your family can travel and consider off-season periods to cut costs. If your group has an ideal destination or type of experience in mind for your reunion, keep those in mind when setting your date. Weather and seasonality are key factors for some locations and activities, and you’ll want to avoid local holidays and other vacation issues.

ALL-INCLUSIVE FAMILY TRIPS

3

ESTABLISH A BUDGET FOR YOUR ALL-INCLUSIVE ACCOMMODATION

One of the most challenging parts of planning a family reunion can be understanding the costs involved. Accommodations, food, drinks, onsite activities and entertainment are some of the largest expenses in any family reunion budget

Holding a family reunion at an all-inclusive resort makes planning and budgeting easier, since these components are generally included in the property’s per-person rates. There’s no need to worry about how much things cost and constantly splitting checks.

Determine each family member’s accommodation budget range early in the process and find a limit that’s acceptable to everyone. It’s also important to consider additional expenses, such as transportation, photos and other non-included charges.

4

USE A TOP-NOTCH TRAVEL ADVISOR FOR YOUR FAMILY REUNION

Planning a family reunion at an allinclusive property can be challenging and time-consuming, particularly with multiple generations involved. There is a wide variety of transportation issues, preferences and accommodation requirements to consider. That’s why an experienced travel advisor or group travel planner can make all the difference in identifying the best location and all-inclusive property for your family group. Their in-depth knowledge and expertise can be invaluable in choosing the right resort and crafting a memorable, stress-free reunion experience. Travel advisors can negotiate attractive group rates and benefits and assist with problems if they arise.

There are many outstanding travel advisors who can help plan your multigenerational family reunion. Seek out recommendations from friends and family members. If you’re looking for additional suggestions, the Family Travel Association website provides lists of certified family travel specialists and travel advisor members with extensive family travel expertise. Leading travel agency networks such as Virtuoso offer referrals as well.

5

IDENTIFY YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS AND INTERESTS

Choosing the best allinclusive resort for your multigenerational family reunion depends on your group’s ages, what your crew wants to do, desired location, budget range and other unique requirements. Defining preferences is essential, since not every all-inclusive property is a perfect match for your family.

Talk with your group to determine their needs and desired activities and make a list to use in the resort selection process. Find out about special accommodations and what your group would like to avoid as well. Keep your family’s age ranges in mind if specific resort amenities are important to your crew, such as kids’ programs and water parks. It’s essential to seek out all-inclusive properties with a wide array of appealing attractions and activities that will keep every generation happy and entertained.

6CHOOSE YOUR IDEAL ALL-INCLUSIVE DESTINATION

Ease of travel, convenience and transportation costs are key factors in selecting a reunion location. Activities and amenities are also important. Some multigenerational groups prefer to select central reunion locations within easy reach of all family members. Others like to go farther away and visit an exciting new destination every year.

There are outstanding all-inclusive properties in the United States, some within convenient driving distance of major cities and major attractions. Families can also choose from a wealth of all-inclusive resorts in international destinations, including  Mexico  and the  Caribbean . Talk with all family members to evaluate possible locations, review your group’s interests, and decide what works best for your needs and budget. A good travel advisor can help with this process.

Families can enjoy a wide variety of memorable experiences together at Mexico's Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit.

7 REVIEW FAMILY REUNION ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

All-inclusive properties vary widely in terms of the types of lodging available. Some all-inclusive resorts feature spacious onsite guest houses and villas, while others offer family-friendly rooms and multibedroom suites. Check to see which rooms are available within your budget range and where they’re located on the property. Connecting rooms and accessible accommodations may be essential to consider. Some all-inclusive resorts may offer attractive group rates and specials as well.

Successful family reunions involve catering to all generations. It’s key to choose an all-inclusive resort where everyone can be comfortable and entertained. Keep your family’s age ranges in mind, as some all-inclusive properties may have a minimum age requirement for guests. You’ll also want to consider the resorts’ settings and overall vibe to find the best fit for your group.

DETERMINE WHAT’S INCLUDED IN YOUR ALL-INCLUSIVE VACATION

While resorts may be labeled “all-inclusive,” they can differ on what is included. Rates typically include meals at many on-property dining venues, most drinks, a variety of onsite activities, kids’ and teens’ club access and non-motorized water sports. Sometimes gratuities, baby equipment, minibar drinks, airport transfers and other items may also be covered. Spa treatments, meals at certain specialty restaurants, and off-property excursions are often available for an additional fee. Review each property’s inclusions for complete details.

It’s important to remember that nightly all-inclusive rates are based on the number of kids and adults in each room. Some allinclusive properties offer “kids stay, play and eat free” deals and reduced rates for children under a certain age. Check each resort’s packages and promotions for your family’s reunion dates. Group programs may also be available, providing rate reductions and additional benefits for your crew.

RESEARCH DINING OPTIONS, ACTIVITIES AND AMENITIES

Bonding and making treasured memories are top family reunion goals, so choosing the right all-inclusive setting for your multigenerational group is crucial. You’ll want to choose a property with loads of programming for all ages and interests and a wide variety of restaurant options. It’s important to find activities and attractions the whole family can enjoy, both together and apart. If family members have food allergies or special needs, make sure the resort can accommodate them.

Review the list of your group’s preferences and requirements and match them against the properties’ offerings. Identify the amenities resorts offer for your family’s age groups and any age restrictions for resort programs and attractions, such as horseback riding, water parks and kids’ clubs. Some all-inclusive properties are ideal playgrounds for families with babies and toddlers, while others are particularly well-suited for groups with tweens and teens. Great activities, entertainment, and venues for parents and grandparents are also key.

TAKE THE ALLINCLUSIVE RESORT’S SIZE INTO ACCOUNT

Bigger can be better when it comes to all-inclusive resorts for family reunions, but smaller properties could be best for some groups. It all depends on your family’s requirements, interests, and preferences for activities and attractions. Special needs and mobility issues may also be factors to consider.

Larger all-inclusive resorts often feature a wide array of dining choices, pools, entertainment options and fun-filled things to do. Smaller properties can offer a more intimate setting for families to gather, with just the right amount of programming and amenities to please the entire group. Choose the ideal venue for your family to reconnect, make memories and spend quality time together. It’s all about strengthening family ties. DR

TRAVELING WITH PETS :

PLANNING TIPS FOR A SAFE TRIP WITH FIDO

These bark-worthy pointers will assist in deciding whether traveling with pets is a good idea, and how to ensure a safe trip for those who do

Before 1980, traveling with pets was done primarily by automobile or private rail car because petfriendly transportation options were scarce. Even more, a select few upscale hotels, resorts

and private vacation rentals catered to traveling canines. Today, planning a safe trip with your pet has never been easier. In honor of our furry family members (and no, we don’t mean Uncle Fred), here is our travel guide of tips to help you decide

whether or not to bring Fido on your next group adventure.

HOW HAS TRAVELING WITH PETS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

Pet-friendly travel has risen in recent

years, especially after the COVID-19 global pandemic. In fact, we tend to notice more dogs at airports around the world these days, and there’s a good reason for this.

During the pandemic, more and more people welcomed new pets into their homes in an attempt to curb the effects of isolation and quarantine. Once the world of travel and tourism opened back up, there came a need for more pet-friendly travel options. Hotels and transportation have adapted to offer more to travelers who want to bring their pets on vacation.

TIPS FOR PET-FRIENDLY LODGING

Traveling with pets can be challenging when it comes to finding that perfect welcoming retreat for furry family members. There are many options for groups with four-legged friends in tow, including vacation home rentals, inns, resorts and hotels. If you choose to stay in a hotel during your trip, consider the following:

• Research pet-friendly hotels in your destination and know the pet fees, if any, that are associated (some charge per animal, per night while others do not implement pet fees at all).

• Search for appropriate pet-friendly vacation rentals on sites like VRBO, Airbnb and local vacation rental

agencies. Be sure to read reviews from those who stayed with their pet.

• Know your hotel’s pet policy regarding animals left alone in rooms as many prohibit this.

• Pay attention to the number of dogs allowed in a hotel room or vacation rental.

• Document the state of your hotel room/ suite or vacation rental when you arrive. Cell phone pictures with a date/ time stamp work well. This also should be done upon checking out.

• Find a hotel that is close to petfriendly attractions and activities the whole group can enjoy.

• Some hotels have pet amenities like designated green space for play and relief areas, complimentary pet beds, dog treats and human-canine on-site restaurants.

• Make sure you know your hotel’s pet policy regarding weight and breed restrictions.

Many hotel chains offer pet-friendly accommodation options for groups of all sizes, including amenities to pamper your pet. For example, brands like Aloft, Best Western, Candlewood Suites, La Quinta Inn & Suites and Marriott Hotels & Resorts are just a few that offer pet stays.

A helpful online resource is BringFido. com where you can search their

database of pet-friendly accommodation options and more.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

• Explore the various options for petfriendly locations, whether domestic or international, to understand the types of activities offered to both humans and pets.

• Familiarize yourself with the local laws of your chosen destination such as leash laws and any federal regulations and ordinances.

• Be aware of seasonal pet laws. Sometimes, during off seasons, dogs are permitted on beaches and boardwalks while you may get fined for such during busy summer months.

• Research nearby restaurants and see if any allow animals, whether inside or on an outside patio. Many eateries with outdoor seating welcome furry friends.

• If you are traveling with pets internationally, be sure to research your destination’s rabies and vaccination laws and regulations. In certain countries, illnesses and diseases that are not known in the U.S. can affect your pet if they are not properly vaccinated. In addition, many countries require your pet’s health report to be countersigned and stamped by APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). This must be done in person at your nearest APHIS office.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN

• It’s vital before traveling with pets to make an appointment with a local veterinarian. Make sure your pet’s vaccines are up-to-date and ask for a copy of the paperwork. Airports and other public transportation and accommodations, not to mention international destinations, will ask for your pet’s health certificate.

• In addition, be sure to have an updated nametag and rabies tag for your pet with current contact information, including your pet’s name, in case Fido takes off on a solo adventure.

• Before embarking on your journey, make note of the destination’s local veterinarian offices, including their contact information and emergency

TRAVELING WITH PETS

hours. Create an emergency plan in the event your furry family member needs medical attention during your stay.

• While at the clinic, ask your vet about pet medication options if your pet is a nervous traveler. There are prescribed medicines recommended by vets and also natural supplements like hemp, CBD and melatonin to calm animals.

PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR A SAFE TRIP

Pet carriers are the number one most important item for a safe trip when traveling with pets. Keep in mind that with pet crates, the darker the better. In fact, the International Air Transportation Association suggests using carriers that create darkness for a calming space without depriving your pet of oxygen.

It’s also important to familiarize your pets with well-known items to mitigate any anxiety. This includes their carrier in the days leading to travel. Packing these familiar items will help your pup relax in unfamiliar surroundings:

• Dog/cat toys

• Blankets

• Pet beds

• A piece of personal clothing that hasn’t been washed

Other important items to remember when traveling with pets:

• Leash

• Collar or harness (muzzle for antisocial pets) including up-to-date vaccine and contact information tags

• Waste bags

• Food, treats, and food and water dishes

• Vet papers

• Pet clothing such as dog booties, pet sweaters, raincoats and life jackets, depending on where your trip takes you

• Any medications your pet is taking

• Dog towels to dry off

FLYING WITH PETS

Flying with your pet can be tricky if you have never done so before. These days, airlines have proven their dedication to furry friends with updated pet policies and ease at the security gates. Don’t worry if you have a nervous or anti-social pet; some airports now have private rooms to conduct pet security procedures.

Here are a few things to consider when navigating the airport and your flight with a pet:

• Airports require all pets to be contained in their respective pet carriers when moving through the airport terminal.

• Contact your chosen airline before traveling with service animals and ask about their current policies and boarding procedures.

• Know where the designated pet relief areas are located around the airport.

• Be aware that airports also have “working dogs” throughout for passenger safety.

• If your pet has anxiety, consider natural supplements like melatonin, hemp or CBD for animals (the

American Veterinary Medical Association does not recommend sedating pets during flights due to possible cardiovascular issues).

• Find out if your airline allows smaller dogs in the cabin as some will while others do not, which means your pet will be traveling in the cargo hold of the aircraft. When traveling with pets, consider all aspects of the adventure, from the days leading up to departure to well after your vacation has started. Follow these guidelines and safety tips when planning your getaway to maximize the experience of bringing your pet along for the journey. DR

HOW TO MAKE A FAMILY REUNION COOKBOOK

40 DESTINATION REUNIONS DestinationReunions.com
Cherished recipes and shared history come together to create your family reunion cookbook, a treasured keepsake and heirloom to pass down

Think back to a delicious dish from your childhood. Try to remember the smells, the tastes and the sounds of satisfaction as it was eaten. Can you remember the ingredients of this dish? Do you remember the recipe? Often, recipes are lost as they’re passed verbally through generations. Because food has the power to invoke nostalgic memories, celebrate shared histories, and bring people together, we want to help your family keep these heirlooms documented forever. One timeless way to preserve these memories is by compiling a family reunion cookbook. In this article, we’ll explore the ways you can compile a cookbook that captures your family’s unique culinary heritage.

1 UNDERSTAND YOUR COOKBOOK’S PURPOSE

It’s important to first grasp what your intentions are for this book. Do you want to create a sophisticated hard cover just for grandma? Or do you want to print 20 magazine-style soft covers for everyone to have? Envisioning this purpose will allow you to better organize and format this reunion cookbook. Once you have these ideas conceptualized, you can start planning the style and theme.

2 GATHER FAMILY RECIPES

Reach out to family members and request their favorite recipes. Encourage contributors to share stories, memories, and photos associated with the dishes. This adds a personal touch and also preserves the narrative behind each recipe. This also gives you an excuse to bring everyone together to reflect on memories!

3 CHOOSE A LAYOUT AND DESIGN SPECIFIC TO COOKBOOKS

When making a book of any kind, there are many options that allow you to format and print books of your liking.

For an experience-forward cookbook creation, we recommend the stylish option, Savor Custom Cookboks. This cookbook is not only a book, but also an experience. With this option, Savor Cookbooks offers a professional photo session in your own kitchen, custom-design hardcover cookbooks, and a welcome box!

For a more affordable cookbook creation, we recommend Blurb, a publishing site that allows you to easily build and design your own cookbook. On this platform, you are able to customize every aspect of the book, and you can order more as needed.

4 ORGANIZE AND CATEGORIZE THE CONTENT

Once you have your design platform and family recipes, organize them into categories. Common sections may

include appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and beverages. You can also add special categories for family traditions, holidays, cultural recipes, or signature dishes that define your family. Begin organizing these into the publishing platform accordingly.

5

INCORPORATE ADDITIONAL FAMILY MEMORIES

A family reunion cookbook is more than just a compilation of recipes; it’s a living testament to the shared experiences, traditions, and stories that make your family unique. Bring out the photo albums and memory boxes as you search for mementos to enhance your cookbooks. Think of it as an interactive scrapbook. You could include family pictures, personal stories, and scans of handwritten recipes. If you have a photo of someone cooking or eating the dish, you can pair those photos with the recipes. You can scan handwritten recipe cards and include them next to the typed ones. By incorporating familial mementos, this cookbook can capture the uniqueness of your family and food’s role in bringing everyone together.

6 INCLUDE PERSONAL TIPS AND TRICKS

Consider adding a section dedicated to secret cooking tips and tricks passed down by experienced family members. Maybe there is a genius time-saving technique that your grandma uses and internet recipes just don’t know about. This section can be all about ingredient substitutions and hidden family methods that you wouldn’t know unless you ask. Now, they can be documented for years to come, so everyone in the family is in on it!

7 PROOFREAD AND EDIT

Before finalizing your family reunion cookbook, carefully proofread and revise the content. When doing so, make sure measurements are consistent and recipes are accurate. In this step, put the finishing touches on your cookbook as you refine the narratives and add any missing pieces. You may also get any last-minute input from loved ones to ensure your cookbook is approved by those who contributed.

8 ENJOY!

Allow this family reunion cookbook to be an excuse to actually bring the family together. Gather everybody, cook recipes from the cookbook, and share your creation over a delicious and special meal. Flip through the pages as you eat what you’re reading and allow this moment to be an opportunity to reflect on the joy, stories, and unity that food will forever serve in your family’s narrative. DR

It is a hot spot for those looking to reconnect their cultural and ancestral roots with the Acadian regions of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
