WELCOME TO THE PREMIERE WHERE2PLAY GUIDE

As the sports tourism industry continues to grow, so has the need for facilities to host tournaments and events. While destinations are working to meet the demand, improving existing venues and building new ones, in-depth resources are necessary for planners to find their perfect facility among a wide selection—which is where we come in.

Since 2009, we have chronicled hundreds of destinations and facilities in the annual edition of Sports Planning Guide (SPG) and on SportsPlanningGuide.com. This resource has grown tremendously as well, with our 2023 guide clocking in at nearly 400 pages. That’s a lot of information and we’re proud to have become the nation’s leading resource for sports tournament planners.

Various times we have been asked to provide advice on a particular type of facility or help with comparing fields for specific needs. These are tough decisions facing rights holders and governing bodies, and our aim is to make it easier with the first of three

new Where2Play (W2P) guides. This first edition, focusing on soccer and lacrosse, showcases the journalism expertise of our team, profiling over 100 outdoor, multipurpose fields and facilities at destinations across the U.S. and its territories.

Just as this edition will help those tasked with organizing soccer, lacrosse and even other outdoor sports that utilize multipurpose fields, such as rugby, subsequent guides will be produced specifically for baseball and softball as well as indoor facilities for sports like basketball and volleyball.

This is a major step forward for SPG and a natural evolution of our services. We remain committed to providing the most inclusive, accurate and detailed information about America’s leading sports destinations and facilities.

Be safe and play well,

The State of Soccer in the United States

AMERICANS’ PASSION FOR SOCCER CONTINUES TO STEADILY CLIMB

Over the past three decades, not only has the number of soccer fans increased on a spectator level, active participation in the sport has also seen a big boost. Programs to increase interest, including easier accessibility and larger pools of coaches, among other improvements, have helped soccer surpass ice hockey as the fourth most popular team sport in the United States.

Origins of the Sport’s Rise

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) reported that, in 2021 and 2022, more than 800,000 students played on high school soccer teams. This number places the sport fourth behind football, basketball and track. Despite only being fourth in high school participation, it’s still a huge leap from previous reports from the 1970s, when soccer had less than 50,000 students playing in high school and ranked outside the Top 10 in popularity.

Congratulations for soccer’s national success does not come down to one, two, or even a dozen organizations, but rather monumental efforts by thousands from the largest cities to the smallest villages across the country. Of course, one would be remiss to exclude two major events that took place in the 90s—the 1994 FIFA Men’s World Cup and the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Though soccer had long been more popular among female athletes in the States, these two events were launching pads for significantly stronger nationwide interest in “the beautiful game.”

“One of the unique things about [the 3v3 Live National Championship in The Palm Beaches] is that [to begin] teams play regional championships in 15 different cities across the country, and the winners of those events actually get to play free here in this event.”

The 1990s also saw the emergence of Major League Soccer (MLS), which has become the stalwart professional soccer league for men in both the United States and Canada. With the league’s greater interests in developing homegrown talent, youth programs have accelerated into producing their own conferences within MLS NEXT, the successor of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Consisting of 590 teams from 133 clubs across the nation, young players from U13 through U19 compete to improve their skills and potentially move up the chain.

Of course, most young players in the U.S. will not partake in those MLS NEXT competitions, and even less who do will not get to the pros, so it’s important for MLS teams to also support their communities through other initiatives. The New York Red Bulls, for example, operate youth programs through official partner clubs. These youth clubs provide programs to learn and play, while the Red Bulls offer support and unique training experiences, including those for young people with special needs through TOPSoccer.

The Divide in Affordability

Price points for youth clubs can vary significantly though, and not everyone can afford for their children to play at

premier clubs at premier prices. In a March 2023 feature for The New York Times, writer Matt Richtel commented that poor children are falling behind their affluent peers in sports and general physical activity, creating a “physical divide.” Cuts to spending, leading to a change of physical education and team sports priorities at schools is partially to blame—as is the multi-billion-dollar privatization of youth sports. While premier clubs can be worthwhile experiences for young players and their families, not everyone can afford the hundreds or thousands in annual costs to participate.

Though there is still a way to go to curtail the divide, support has emerged across the nation in different forms. MLS teams have taken note and have been partnering up with lower cost clubs as well to offer better experiences for young players. Nashville-based tournament organizer 3v3 Live strives to keep costs low while offering unique team and player experiences and intense competition.

“One of the unique things about [the 3v3 Live National Championship in The Palm Beaches] is that [to begin] teams play regional championships in 15 different cities across the country, and the winners of those events actually get to play free here in this event,” said

Eddie Meador, president of 3v3 Live. “All in all, about 5,000 people have been here over the last two days.”

Youth soccer participation is also being bolstered by community programs. The City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Division announced in 2023 their plan to help diversify the sport and boost youth participation by offering the lowest league cost in the entire region. Registration is already open for the aptly named Soccer in the D, and families can register players between 3–14 for just $35 for an entire season.

“Soccer in the D has created ‘soccer moms and soccer families’ in the city of Detroit,” said Shay Lewis, manager of athletics at Detroit Parks & Recreation. “It’s great to see grandma, uncle, mom and dad on the sidelines of our soccer fields cheering on the kids. That’s what sports do; it brings families and communities together.”

Programs at lower cost require volunteers though, and Detroit Parks & Recreation are not alone in that regard for need. It’s important for those with the knowledge of the sport to become involved to boost their community. Being there for tournaments and events to help young players develop as athletes and as people is critical to the game and their futures. W 2 P

– Brian Silcott, Vice President of Sports Growth & Development, USA Lacrosse

Even a Pandemic Can’t Slow Lacrosse’s Surge

WITH RISING NUMBERS IN YOUTH SPORTS AND IN THE COLLEGIATE RANKS, LACROSSE IS A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY

Considering lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America with roots dating back to the 1600s, it’s going to take more than a measly worldwide pandemic to stunt its growth.

Prior to 2020, lacrosse was enjoying a meteoric rise across North America. Not only was it one of the fastest-growing sports among youths and high schoolers, the NCAA declared lacrosse to be the fastest-growing collegiate sport as well.

From 2001 to 2014, lacrosse participation in the U.S. increased by 218 percent and in 2018, the Sport and Fitness Industry Association released a report saying youth lacrosse participation had grown 25 percent since 2012. Over that same period, baseball’s participation levels only grew 2 percent and football’s participation fell almost 16 percent.

On the collegiate level, the NCAA said that between 2003 and 2018, Division I lacrosse grew by 61 percent among men and a whopping 97 percent among women. Since 1982, the number of college lacrosse programs in the U.S. has increased by more than 60 percent. Today, lacrosse is an NCAA staple with 127 Division I women’s programs and 75 Division I men’s programs.

Bouncing Back

This impressive growth comes on the heels of the 2020 pandemic, which stunted lacrosse’s prosperity, albeit momentarily. According to data from the Physical Activity Council and Sports & Fitness Industry Association, lacrosse in 2019 recorded total U.S. participation numbers of more than 2.1 million players. That dropped to 1.88 million in 2020 before slightly rising to 1.89 million in 2021.

“Like most youth sports, COVID hit our numbers and the recovery among recreational players is taking a bit longer than we would have liked,” said Brian Silcott, vice president of Sports Growth & Development, USA Lacrosse. “Membership initially dropped around 25 percent, but we are seeing a return to play, and we anticipate our membership numbers will be higher in 2023 than they were in 2019.

“Lacrosse tournaments and events have recovered well since 2020 and most of our top event operators are reporting that their events are back to pre-pandemic participation numbers,” Silcott added. “The past two years have been about recovery, not growth. We are

always looking to grow the game, but with the impact of COVID on participation numbers, our focus has been on supporting our member organizations as they work to get back to business as usual. Now that we are seeing that happen, we will turn our attention and resources to growing our participation numbers across all age levels from high school down through 6U.”

A Sport on the Rise

Today, lacrosse is not only returning to normalcy on the youth and collegiate levels, it is thriving professionally. The National Lacrosse League was founded in 1986 and features 15 teams in the U.S. and Canada and plays box lacrosse, an indoor version of the sport. The Premier Lacrosse League, which debuted in 2019, is made up of eight teams and plays field lacrosse, which takes place outdoors. Both leagues are partnered with ESPN and in 2022, the Premier Lacrosse League secured a four-year media rights deal with ESPN reportedly worth eight figures.

ESPN’s confidence in the PLL has proven fruitful thus far as the league’s cable viewership has risen 147 percent.

In 2022, a broadcast of a CannonsArchers game averaged 452,000 viewers and was the most-watched outdoor lacrosse game on record.

A third league, Athletes Unlimited, has provided a professional platform for women’s lacrosse since 2021 and is also carried by ESPN. Athletes Unlimited features 56 of the best women’s professional lacrosse players in the world and is doing its part to help grow the game for women.

Another successful event that took place in 2022 was the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship, which stretched across 11 days and featured 29 teams, the most in a women’s world championship. More than 500 athletes competed and nearly 40,000 tickets were sold for the competition. With ESPN broadcasting almost 200 hours of the championship, this event was a major success and another example of lacrosse’s momentum heading into the future.

Lacrosse is clearly a sport on the rise. With the considerable growth of the sport in the U.S., the rest of the world is also taking notice.

In 2021, the International Olympic Committee voted to grant full recognition to the international federation for lacrosse, a major milestone toward getting the sport into the Olympics. The last time lacrosse was played in the Olympics was 1908. It was a demonstration sport in 1928, 1932 and 1948. Lacrosse is now one of nine sports that have been invited by Los Angeles 2028 to present its case for inclusion into the 2028 Olympic games.

If that happens, the benefits to the ongoing growth of the sport will be massive thanks to sheer exposure alone. The Tokyo Summer Olympics averaged 15.6 million viewings per night and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing were watched by more than a billion people.

“We are currently building our strategies around this project and working to align all stakeholders in our sport to create a singular push for growth of the game in advance of the 2028 Olympics,” Silcott said. “Over the next 5-10 years we plan to double participation (in the entire sport of lacrosse).” W 2 P
