The question now is where the next phase of growth comes from.

Interestingly for the U.S., that question extends beyond soccer. Lacrosse will return to the Olympic stage at LA28 through the debut of Sixes, a fasterpaced format designed to showcase the sport to a global audience. Rugby has followed a similar path with Sevens, and the sport’s next major opportunity is already on the horizon as the U.S. prepares to host the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup in and the 2033 Women’s

ichael Lazar, senior vice president for strategy at U.S. Soccer, fell in love with the beautiful game in 1994 watching a World Cup match at Soldier Field in Chicago. It’s a common story for a generation of soccer fanatics who’ve seen the sport firmly implant itself into the American mainstream.

This summer’s sequel isn’t likely to have the same impact.

How could it? Major League Soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League are direct outgrowths from FIFA placing its grandest event in the land of opportunity. The U.S. Women’s National Soccer team has won three world championships in that span, only adding to the fan and participation base.

Yet a World Cup boom is already underway amid a far different landscape. It’s considered a given within all levels of soccer organizations that participation will grow dramatically over the next year or two. In the 1990s, achieving an increased foothold in this country was the goal. This time around, U.S. Soccer, franchises, clubs, travel teams and recreational entities are far more focused on retention as soccer has a chance to take the next step in the country.

The statistics reveal a 2.2 million surge in the past year as the buildup for the World Cup has intensified.

Sustaining that momentum may require reconsidering the sport’s structural integrity across the U.S. There are thousands of soccer teams in the country with a variety of levels. For new players and parents, finding the right fit can be challenging.

“The ecosystem is fragmented,” Lazar acknowledges.

How that’s playing out is that too many young athletes are leaving recreation leagues to play travel soccer, says Matt Libber, executive director of the Maryland SoccerPlex in Montgomery County, Maryland.

A former event organizer, Libber has seen a shift from club teams attracting primarily elite athletes to accepting lesser-skilled players with little hope of earning a college scholarship, let alone becoming a professional. While travel sports offer a different and often positive experience, Libber says parents should “look at the math” before making the financial and time commitment.

“They’re basically paying to play rec soccer in another state,” Libber says. “If you are on the third or fourth level club team, you should be playing rec.”

John Guidroz, founder of Snap Soccer, a Southern-based tournament and events company serving 60,000 athletes at tournaments, says travel soccer’s success is the result of longterm infrastructure investment, strategic partnerships and experiencefocused event management. Snap’s tournaments sparked interest in parts of the country lagging behind the sport’s surge, he says. Guidroz prefers to avoid delineating between club and rec athletes and focus on encouraging participation.

“You really have 1,500 kids playing soccer in your community,” he says, as an example.

WHERE IS YOUTH SOCCER HEADED? Parents paying thousands of dollars annually for their kids to play soccer helps fuel the country’s sports tourism industry, which SportsETA reports generates $274.5 billion total economic impact, supports 1.6 million jobs and produces $20.5 billion in state and local

tax revenue nationwide.

For example: Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Alabama, where Snap has held tournaments since the facility’s opening in 2016, hosted 85 events in 2025, drawing 253,177 visitors to the city.

The city estimates earning $44.5 million in business sales and generating $2.5 million in local tax revenue from the sports tourism facility.

Don Staley, the complex’s initial executive director and former head soccer coach at Radford University and the University of Alabama, predicts more than the 11 U.S. destinations hosting World Cup matches will benefit from the summer megaevent.

“There will be more tournaments created because of this boom,” says Staley, who is now president and CEO of Southeastern Network of Athletic Professionals, a sports tourism consulting firm.

U.S. Soccer and US Club Soccer have reservations about the accelerated growth of travel soccer. The increased interest in the sport presents opportunities to right size development so that players can have the best experience possible and stick with

the sport longer, says Tyler Heffernan, vice president of marketing and communications at US Club Soccer.

Both national governing bodies are pushing to reduce the number of travel tournaments for young athletes. The high costs create economic disparities in a sport that traditionally requires a ball, field and two goals to play.

“Far too often, teams travel past good, neighboring opponents because those teams are affiliated with different organizations or leagues,” Heffernan says.

Burnout is another concern, with 10–13-year-olds, particularly girls, among the most likely to quit soccer for another activity, says Lazar. Libber notes recreation leagues in Maryland have adopted a 7v7 format instead of a standard 11v11 for U14 soccer to compensate for the low numbers.

National 1 League is how U.S. Soccer and US Club Soccer aim to address the concerns. Beginning next season, US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues and the USYS National League will consolidate competitions and create a uniform experience while minimizing school and family disruptions.

Other factors requiring attention are recruiting top-level coaches and referees and finding more playing space, adds Heffernan. As part of its outreach. U.S. Soccer is working with a community in North Texas to manage a facility, according to Lazar.

“Putting fun back into a lot of what we do is really important,” he says of the management philosophy.

Guidroz says small adjustments like starting games at 8:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. are how organizers can demonstrate they place families’ experience over recruiting as many teams as possible to a tournament.

“We truly owe our time and our respect to the people who are coming to participate in our events,” Guidroz says.

Heffernan notes that scrutiny over costs and commitment should keep planners on guard to provide the best product possible.

“That doesn’t mean travel to tournaments and events is going away—far from it. But it does mean that tournament organizers need to prove their value,” Heffernan says.

Expectations for LA28 and Beyond LA28 OFFERS LACROSSE AN UNPRECEDENTED PLATFORM TO EXPAND ITS REACH, ATTRACT NEW AUDIENCES AND STRENGTHEN ITS GLOBAL FOOTPRINT

acrosse will break its over century-long hiatus as a contesting Olympic sport in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles (LA28). With its return, fans and players anticipate what the international spotlight means for the future of lacrosse as an official Olympic sport.

The inclusion will occur under the Sixes format–a faster, more compact blend of traditional and field box lacrosse.

World Lacrosse created this version in 2018 with the Olympic stage in mind. In order to make it to the Games, the sport needed to be more accessible for athletes of all levels while reducing the cost of event staging.

Characterized as an accelerated form of the sport, the games time out at 45 minutes with six players per team and no specialty positions. This version gained significant traction after its feature in the 2022 World Games, and has now landed itself a spot at LA28.

“This version of the game lowers barriers to entry for youth by requiring fewer players and a smaller field, while also creating a more balanced competitive landscape at the elite level,” said Marc Riccio, CEO of USA Lacrosse. “At the national team level, it’s a fast-paced version of the sport that should engage new audiences.”

the traditional field version featured, they still view the compromise as worthwhile.

“The game that we play is a better game, more exciting,” said Corrigan. “We weren’t going to get that game into the Olympics.”

The creation of the Sixes format echoes the strategy World Rugby adopted with their Sevens format.

In 2009, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted rugby into the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. In the years after the vote, rugby doubled in global participation and quintupled in women’s participation. Should lacrosse see the same success, it will have the ability to reach new markets and build competitive national teams without requiring extensive infrastructure or large rosters.

World Lacrosse aspires to see growth in viewership, participation and credibility as an official Olympic sport. Just as rugby gained worldwide recognition as an energizing, competitive sport for all ages and genders, lacrosse has positioned itself for the same success.

How the Olympic Spotlight Reshapes Lacrosse

Gaining a spot at the Olympics will shine a light on lacrosse’s qualification cycle, such as team selection, world championships and the process to qualify to play in the Olympics.

“The Olympics will attract more sponsorships, broadcasting opportunities and potential increased investors,” said Christine Halfpenny, head women’s lacrosse coach at Notre Dame. “We’re already seeing the PLL and WLL utilize the global brand the Olympics delivers to market the sport and the summer playing schedules.”

Building that brand and strengthening the digital media presence is crucial to reach a widespread audience.

International Expansion

Olympic lacrosse’s most significant impact, according to Corrigan, may occur outside the states. Many countries tie their athletic funding to sports featured at the Olympics. This causes a substantial participation blockage to sports, like lacrosse, that haven’t been

featured in decades.

“Having it be an Olympic sport is going to unlock a lot of resources around the world for the game to expand,” said Corrigan.

Halfpenny agrees and emphasizes that more funding options from sponsors and supporters can expand programming for all ages.

“That government funding, sponsorships and youth development programs will add increased support and help the sport grow in nontraditional countries,” said Halfpenny.

Preparing for the International Stage

While much of the preparation efforts are geared towards education and adoption of the Sixes format, measures are being taken to ensure those inspired to join the sport have an easy entryway.

“Equally important is building sustainable community pathways so that new fans inspired by the Olympics have accessible opportunities to participate in the sport locally,” said Riccio.

to be more accessible for players with physical or developmental disabilities.

Some of these formats include wheelchair lacrosse, impairment-specific formats and unified lacrosse where athletes with and without disabilities play alongside one another.

As these organizations make easier pathways towards lacrosse for new participants, established players are putting a pause on their career plans in order to improve their chances of competing at LA28.

“The guys who are going to be in their prime for that Olympic cycle are super excited about it,” said Corrigan. “There’s nothing they could do inside the game that would be more meaningful than playing in the Olympics for the United States.”

LA28 will shape the future of lacrosse for the foreseeable future. Athletes and stakeholders hold firm in the belief that it will stand as a parapet for future expansion nationally and internationally, transcending the beloved sport into a household name.

Dorey Park is the largest park in Henrico, encompassing 400 acres in the eastern portion of the county. The park includes something for everyone: sports, trails, playgrounds, picnic shelters, disc golf course, and even a dog park. Henrico County recently added a trailhead that links to the Virginia Capital Trail. The park is home to six multipurpose fields—four of which are tournament fields and two youth fields—and a five-acre lake.

One of the largest soccer venues in the country, Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery is suitable for every sport imaginable, namely soccer, lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, football, softball and baseball. Stuart Sports Complex offers their facilities at affordable prices, including tournament rentals for exclusive use of fields for an entire weekend. Jam-packed with amenities throughout the facility, the complex features concessions, restrooms, a dog park, a playground with a splash pad, garden plots, Jericho Lake and a 1,300 spot parking area.

Redbird Athletics Complex boasts a 14,000-seat football stadium/ multipurpose facility in the heart of Normal, Illinois. Other amenities include a modern press level, 5,500-square-foot indoor club, and a spacious covered concourse. Demirjian Park is the home of Fighting Illini Soccer. The park features two fields (one for competition and one for practice), a main stadium between the two fields, and the newly renovated track and field complex.

The stadium itself offers state-of-theart amenities including locker rooms, sports medicine and nutrition facilities, coaches’ offices, video and meeting rooms and spaces for visiting teams and officials, along with lounge and study spaces.

Located at Parkland College, Dodds Park features 11 top-quality soccer fields that have hosted the Illinois Futbol Club Spring and Fall Invites, as well as an 18hole disc golf course.

Evergreen Hollow Park spans 42 acres that includes four lighted soccer fields.

On the west side of the park sits Kluthe Memorial Pool, an outdoor swimming pool with a lap pool, water slide and children’s pool area, great for cool down sessions during hot summer tournaments.

Elgin Sports Complex features tons of championship-level competition spaces all in one location. This 107-acre venue comprises 10 full-size soccer fields (four of which are lighted), hard-surface paths, a playground and The Hill, which is known as Chicago’s best BMX track.

The sports complex is a pet-friendly facility and is wheelchair accessible.

Glazebrook Community Park has four lighted youth soccer fields. The concession stand is open during games in May, June, July, August, September and October.

Located in Rock Island, Illinois, along the Mississippi River, Augustana College features multiple athletic facilities for a wide variety of sports. SCHEELS Sports Park is one of the most advanced multi-sport complexes in the country. The outdoor grounds include eight NCAA-regulation soccer/lacrosse fields that can be configured into 16 youth fields. Training can be operated year-round with a full-size indoor field inside the air-supported dome. Guests can enjoy an on-site bar, food truck plaza and pavilion, all within walking distance of the adjacent SCHEELS retail destination and just minutes from Springfield’s dining, lodging and attractions. Parking is expandable to 2,500 spaces as needed.

One of Columbus’s most pristine facilities, Blackwell Park has what it takes to host tournaments for soccer, lacrosse, rugby and other outdoor sports. Home to the Richard J. Wigh Soccer Center, this park can house up to 34 soccer matches across its sprawling spans of sparkling grass.

Goebel Sports Park is a multipurpose sports facility designed to serve local and regional tournaments and the community at large. This 10-field soccer and lacrosse facility recently underwent a 2.3-million-dollar facelift. Two of the fields feature high-quality synthetic turf for all-weather play, with six fields offering championship-level Bermuda grass and two cool-season grass fields.

The park also features two Olympic-size fields with synthetic turf to support playing in all-weather conditions. In addition, there are six Olympic-size irrigated Bermuda grass fields, two Olympic-size irrigated cool-season grass fields, and nine lighted fields.

The Plex facilities are Fort Wayne’s premier indoor and outdoor sports complexes. The Plex South features a 78,000-square-foot indoor turf dome, renovated in 2023, supporting soccer, lacrosse, futsal and more. The Plex North offers 19 outdoor natural grass fields, as well as two indoor XL turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, flag football, ultimate, and futsal.

Indiana Invaders Sports Complex features 13 full-size soccer fields, adjustable for any sport, with four more in the process of being added.

The North Complex offers five full-size fields, two of which are stadium fields, with large bleachers, a scoreboard and press box, lights for night games, and 600 parking spots. Memorial Park is Colorado Springs’ largest community park and offers a wide range of sports facilities to accommodate a number of sports and recreational activities. Memorial park offers 15 multipurpose fields for soccer, lacrosse and football, two 5K trails and much more. Prospect Lake, in the heart of Memorial Park, was the site for the Pro Wakeboard Tour. The U.S. Olympic Training Center Velodrome, Sertich Ice Center and the Memorial Skate Park are all located in Memorial Park.

Edmond’s top-tier soccer facility, Service Blake Soccer Complex, is a tournamentgrade facility with 16 full-size grass soccer fields. In addition to competitive play for local leagues and large-scale tournaments, the facility supports development programs for young athletes to learn the game, improve skills, and prepare for higher levels of competition. A recent $5.5M renovation expanded the concession/bathroom buildings, added a new conference room for tournament meetings, and enhanced the entrance with a drop-off area to improve traffic flow.

Woodson Park Athletic Complex provides multipurpose outdoor fields for tournaments of all sizes, all within close proximity to downtown OKC and located near Will Rogers World Airport. The $13-million Athletic Complex opened in 2024 and includes four lighted rectangle grass fields, two concession stands with restrooms, children’s play areas, and spectator seating.

The South Lakes Soccer Club is a multifaceted club providing recreational, Academy and competitive soccer for youth in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. The club’s 158-acre Soccer Complex is located just south of Will Rogers World Airport. It features dozens of soccer fields for all youth age groups, including up to U19 at the highest level of play with the Oklahoma Cosmos. The club also provides soccer camps, goalkeeper training, and private training. Also available on-site at the complex is an event center for hosting larger tournaments, as well as a skatepark and a basketball court with four hoops.

Home of Oklahoma Celtic Football Club, Gillis-Rother Soccer Complex is an impressive expanse of 22 all-grass soccer fields, 11 of which are equipped with lights. Intentionally built with players, coaches, and families in mind, the complex offers a safe, organized setting for training sessions, competitions and tournaments.

OSU Cowgirl soccer calls Neal Patterson Stadium home. Advance Soccer Complex has six natural grass fields and one turf championship field, with a press box, electronic scoreboard, and approximately 1,400-person seating capacity. These fields can be reconfigured to provide properly-sized fields for all age groups, from Pee Wee to adult league. The complex also has a clubhouse complete with four locker rooms, conference rooms seating 60 people, an indoor futsal field, a concession stand, public restrooms, offices, and more.

Home of the Capital Futbol Club, Pioneer Sports Park comprises eight full-size fields ideal for hosting large tournaments bolstered by a suitable climate. This complex showcases two of only 11 FIFA Quality PRO-rated fields in North America with three turf fields and hosts the Capital Cup Soccer Tournament annually in June. The park also plays host to other sports like Australian Rules Football.

Situated within the Bob Keefer Center for Sports, Les Schwab Sports Park features four lighted multi-use outdoor synthetic turf fields, a playground, picnic area and entry plaza, Bocce ball courts and a 50-space parking lot. The entry plaza can accommodate up to four food trucks and serves as a grand entrance for any sporting event. The synthetic turf fields have a combined capacity of 2,000 spectators, with bleachers and field lights as amenities.

Historic Ratliff Stadium, which sports a 24,000 capacity, is one of the premier high school stadiums in Texas. In addition to football, soccer, softball and tennis, the stadium complex is home to the annual West Texas Relays, other area track and field events, UIL Regional and Area Marching Band contests, Special Olympics and graduation ceremonies. Odessa, TX, is home of the legendary Friday Night Lights which is based in this iconic stadium. It features 2 football/soccer fields, a press box, concessions and locker rooms.

Stephen C. Beachy Central Park is one of the western region’s most dynamic destinations for youth and amateur sports tournaments. The park features a well-planned layout with three multipurpose fields for soccer, lacrosse and other sports. There are plenty of open green spaces designed to host large competitions with ease in a central location with access to College Station’s hotels, attractions and dining spots. The pavilion on site has a full kitchen.

Athletes, coaches and spectators have long considered College Station’s Veterans Park & Athletic Complex to be a premier venue for local, regional and national tournaments. The complex features 13 multi-purpose fields, four of which are synthetic. Amenities include lights on all fields, playgrounds, wifi connectivity, pavilion and more.

Tucked away in the park is a 12-acre site dedicated to veterans. The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial includes life-sized statues, a Wall of Honor, interpretive panels and memorial sites.

Russell Creek Park is the only park in North America that has seven cricket fields in a single location. The park is home to at least one big-purse international cricket tournament each year. The park features 20 full-size fields for soccer, lacrosse, rugby or football ranging from 70’ by 120’ or 75’ by 120’ fields along with two 50’ by 80’ fields. Ten of these fields are lighted and have shaded bleacherettes.

Carpenter Park is a picturesque, newly renovated park that can be used for a variety of sports. The park features 11 lighted full-sized fields including four gated synthetic turf fields. Visitors can enjoy playing soccer (on two 50’ x 80’ fields), lacrosse, football, Ultimate frisbee and more. There are also trails surrounding the park which are great for hikers and walkers.

The impressive Cris Quinn Soccer Complex has 30 pristine multipurpose fields designed for soccer, 15 of which are for 11v11, along with several other sports. The indoor soccer field boasts a state-of-the-art artificial playing area measuring 85 x 185 feet, accommodating both youth and adult leagues. The facility features a lit scoreboard and a 30 x 50-foot warmup area. Additionally, the climatecontrolled indoor field enables play to continue irrespective of outdoor weather conditions.

Stocker Fields, a 50-acre facility, features up to 17 grass soccer fields and is located within minutes of Historic Downtown Snohomish. The site hosts league games, annual tournaments and weekend events, specifically the annual Bigfoot tournament and River’s Edge Brewfest, both that bring in many youth teams and eventgoers. In spring 2025, Snohomish United played its USL League Two inaugural season, using Stocker Fields as its home turf. The facility is also a perfect venue for other sports, including Ultimate Frisbee, archery and cornhole. The facility has plenty of parking spaces, a large concession area and vendor booths.

Meadowdale Playfields is an outdoor lighted facility with two multipurpose fields that provide space for soccer, football, rugby and lacrosse. There is a concession stand, walking trail, playground, picnic facility, restrooms and more.

Sozo hosts tourneys and events in several sports this year, including soccer, football, lacrosse, pickleball, basketball, and running, as well as two major festivals.

Starfire Sports’ 54-acre campus boasts world-class athletic fields, amenities, and staff. Features of the campus include 12 outdoor fields, a 3,500-seat stadium with press box, scoreboard and PA system, a pre-wired pavilion for vendor tents and booths. There is also a 81,000-square-foot athletic center containing two indoor fields, locker rooms, large meeting and banquet rooms, restaurants and retail. The campus is the home practice field to the Seattle Reign and home stadium to the Seattle Seawolves.
