Policy. Process. Perception
The Forces Behind Travel
AS WE LOOK AHEAD, one thing is clear: policy, process, and perception are playing an increasingly influential role in shaping global travel — and perhaps even more so when it comes to international travel to the United States. While not unique to the U.S., we’re seeing how a combination of entry requirements, cost structures, and public narratives can influence traveler decisionmaking. And that directly impacts how we plan, package, and sell the U.S.
At IITA, our priority is to ensure that the voice of the international travel trade is not only heard but understood by those making decisions that affect global mobility. Over the past year, we have intensified our engagement with federal agencies, policymakers, and industry stakeholders on issues ranging from visa processing and entry requirements to national park access and fee structures. Our approach is grounded in real-world input from our members and international travel trade.
We are advocating for policies that protect security while supporting a competitive and welcoming travel environment. Just as importantly, we are working to ensure that implementation is practical. How policies are executed on the ground often matters as much as the policies themselves.
This year, I am especially pleased to recognize the re-election of our Chairwoman, Lena Ross, COO of America 4 You, for a second term. Lena’s leadership — steady, thoughtful, and focused — has been
instrumental during a time that requires both a cool head and a clear, strategic vision. She is supported by an engaged Board of Directors aligned around a clear objective: to reduce friction in the travel experience while strengthening the long-term viability of inbound travel.
We also recognize that policy is only part of the equation. Communication is equally critical. In a complex environment, access to clear, factual information helps counter uncertainty and supports informed decisionmaking. That is why we established the Trusted Resource Hub on our website and continue to prioritize timely updates and direct engagement with our international partners.
To our colleagues around the world, you are the bridge between travelers and destination, expectation and experience. Our commitment is to stand alongside you — advocating for better policies, sharing critical insights, and working toward a travel environment that supports confidence and growth.
Together, we are shaping what comes next for international travel to the United States.
With appreciation, Lisa Simon

The Power of Partnership
In a world that continues to evolve at a rapid pace, travel remains one of the most powerful ways we stay connected. And while the global landscape has become more complex — from policy changes and cost pressures to shifting perceptions about travel to the United States — the desire to explore, experience, and connect has not diminished.
AT THE INTERNATIONAL INBOUND TRAVEL ASSOCIATION, we see this every day through our members — the inbound operators, destinations, and travel suppliers who work across every sector of the U.S. travel industry. They are your partners on the ground, navigating complexity, adapting to change, and ensuring that international travelers experience the United States with confidence and ease.
We recognize today’s environment presents challenges, and we are actively engaged in addressing them. IITA continues to advocate for policies that are fair, transparent, and supportive of international visitation, while also ensuring our members have the most current information to guide you and your clients.
At the same time, we are leaning into opportunity.
The United States is entering a decade of global visibility — starting with the Route 66 Centennial, the FIFA World Cup, America’s 250th anniversary to upcoming summer and winter Olympic & Paralympic Games, Rugby World Cup and more major sporting events. These milestones bring not only visitors, but a chance to shape perception — to show the world who we are through authentic experiences, welcoming communities, and the diversity that defines this country.
Our focus is on readiness and partnership. Through initiatives like our International
Readiness Training , expanded industry collaboration, and ongoing engagement with policymakers, we are working to ensure that destinations and local businesses are prepared to deliver exceptional experiences — not just during peak moments, but year-round.
Because what matters most is what happens on the ground.
Every itinerary you create, every traveler you send, and every experience delivered by our members contributes to a larger story — one that reinforces trust, builds relationships, and inspires future travel. In today’s environment, that matters more than ever. Travel is resilient. It adapts. It connects. And it endures because of the people behind it — you and our members — who believe in its power.
Let’s continue to move forward — together — with purpose, partnership, and a shared commitment to making travel to the United States meaningful, memorable, and worth the journey.
Warm regards, Lena

meaningful alternative to soulless interstates
NO OTHER TYPE OF VACATION can rival the exhilaration and sense of freedom that an epic road trip offers. Cars play an integral part in the American identity, and hitting the open road is the ultimate expression of independence and the country’s pioneering spirit. Drive trips are part of the national consciousness, a genuinely American experience.
By Randy Mink
While many travelers are content to zip at a fast clip along interstate highways, satisfied with chain hotels and restaurants and all the homogeneity that brings, more and more people are elevating road journeys to a new level. Straying from overly commercial pathways, they are opting for scenic byways that pass through small towns and wilderness areas, away from big cities and suburban sprawl.
Delivering more than speedy point-topoint transportation, these slower-paced ribbons of asphalt connect road trippers not only with nature but with America’s folkways and historical roots, cherished traditions of Indigenous peoples and friendly local communities with stories to tell. The
federal government has designated such thoroughfares as All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways.
Here are six of the best scenic drives in the USA. Full of eye-popping scenery and cultural discoveries, these routes work well with flydrive itineraries for inbound groups arriving in major gateway cities.
Trail of the Ancients
This National Scenic Byway showcases Native American history in the Four Corners region, a land of stunning red-rock landscapes where the states of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico meet. The route is dedicated to the archaeology and culture of the Ancestral Puebloan people who once inhabited the American Southwest.
In southwestern Colorado, Mesa Verde
National Park is known for its massive 12th and 13th century cliff dwellings set high in sandstone cliffs. Canyon of the Ancients National Monument, 17 miles from Mesa Verde, boasts the highest density of Native American archaeological sites, including cliff houses, kivas (religious chambers) and petroglyphs, and it has an excellent museum.
Other highlights on the Trail of the Ancients (a 350-mile roundtrip from Cortez, Colorado) include southeastern Utah’s Hovenweep National Monument, with its unusual tower ruins; Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, whose iconic buttes on the Arizona-Utah border have appeared in countless Western movies; and Four Corners Monument, a photo op at the only point where road trippers can stand in four states at once.
Native American Scenic Byway
This byway runs north and south through 350 miles of central South Dakota, extending 34 miles into North Dakota. Offering scenic views of the Missouri River and surrounding prairie, it passes through the reservations
of five Sioux Nation tribes — Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Lower Brule and Yankton.
Memorial markers, monuments, museums and sacred sites commemorate the heritage of the Sioux Nation. Wildlife watchers may see deer, pronghorn and prairie dogs, plus buffalo and elk herds maintained by the tribes. Bald eagles, sacred in Native cultures, can be spotted at Randall Creek State Recreation Area and Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge. The top-notch Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center, on the campus of St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, abounds with historical treasures and contemporary Native art. Overlooking the Missouri River outside of Chamberlain is Dignity: Of Earth & Sky, a 50-foot-tall steel sculpture of a Native woman casting her gaze across the plains. Dakota Plains Gallery displays works by Great Plains artists — quilts, baskets, beadwork and oil paintings. Stop in Mobridge to admire the 10 murals painted by prominent Native American artist Oscar Howe.
Natchez Trace Parkway
A unit of the National Park Service, this scenic two-lane All-American Road runs southwest from just south of Nashville, Tennessee to the outskirts of Natchez, Mississippi. Points of interest, marked every few miles, recall the history of one of the American frontier’s most traveled roads between the 1780s and 1820s, a trade route originally blazed by Native Americans.
Unimpeded by billboards and commercial vehicles, the leisurely 444-mile drive winds through woodlands and fields of corn, cotton and soybeans. There are scenic overlooks, picnic areas and hiking trails that lead to waterfalls and old mining sites, but no gas stations, restaurants or lodging.
Natchez, the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River, is famous for its antebellum mansions. Nashville, nicknamed Music City, is home to the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Among places to visit in Mississippi are Tishomingo State Park, with its huge boulders and fern-filled crevices; Cypress Swamp; Emerald Mound, the hub of an Indian ceremonial center; and Mount Locust Inn, a restored 1784 plantation home that stands as the only survivor of the many inns that once dotted the Trace. The town of Tupelo claims the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum, the Trace’s only visitor center and Tupelo National Battlefield, a Civil War site.
Blue Ridge Parkway
Another non-commercial two-lane road managed by the National Park Service, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the longest linear park in the country. This All-American Road stretches 469 miles along the spine of mountains between Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park and Great
Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina-Tennessee border. Each bend of the ribbon-like highway reveals another photoworthy scene, and there are many pull-offs for taking in the vistas.
Outdoor museums at historic farms, old mills and family homesteads paint a picture of Appalachian history. Fall color season is the most popular time to visit.
In southwestern Virginia, picture-perfect Mabry Mill offers demonstrations at the gristmill, sawmill and blacksmith shop. Its restaurant serves classic Southern cooking. The Blue Ridge Music Center near Galax presents performances of old-time mountain music. North Carolina highlights include the three-tiered cascade at Linville Falls, accessible via hiking trails; the swinging bridge a mile above sea level at Grandfather Mountain; historical attractions maintained by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and the artsy city of Asheville.
Cherohala Skyway
Many motorists say the mile-high vistas offered by this 43-mile National Scenic Byway rivals the beauty of any comparable stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road runs along
the crest of the Unicoi Mountains between Robbinsville in the southwest corner of North Carolina to Tellico Plains in southeastern Tennessee. It is named for the Cherokee and Nantahala national forests, which line each side of the highway.
Popular stops along or near the road include hiking trails to peaks like Huckleberry Knob, which offers 360-degree views; Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, an old-growth forest with huge yellow poplars; and Cherokee attractions such as the Museum of the Cherokee People, Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and Oconaluftee Indian Village.
Strait of Juan de Fuca Highway
One of the most scenic stretches in the Pacific Northwest, this 61-mile coastal road offers pretty forest and water views, quaint fishing villages, remote beaches and Native American heritage. Here at the most northwesterly point in the contiguous United States, the National Scenic Byway follows the channel that separates Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Motorists may spot eagles diving, gray whales spouting and otters splashing.
The quiet seaside settlement of Neah Bay, surrounded by the Makah Reservation, is home to the Makah Cultural and Research Center. The museum’s tribal artwork and artifacts date as far back as the 16th century. Its centerpiece is a full-size cedar longhouse. Displays include whaling and seal-hunting canoes and weapons.

Iconic Stadiums That Deliver the Ultimate Sports Experience
Roaring crowds, storied rivalries and game-day traditions turn America’s sporting events into unforgettable experiences
By Jason Paha
FOR MANY INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS, the United States is defined by legendary landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon or the sheer luminescence that is Las Vegas. But there’s another place where visitors can feel the pulse of the country: inside its sporting cathedrals. From roaring baseball crowds to high-speed racing to incredible college football rivalries, American sports events deliver spectacle and tradition and must be seen to be believed. For inbound travelers looking to experience the culture beyond museums and monuments, attending a live game offers an unforgettable window into the American spirit. Here are eight sports destinations visitors should put on their bucket list.
Major League Baseball: Yankee Stadium (Bronx, New York)
Few venues capture the heritage of American sports like Yankee Stadium, home of the legendary New York Yankees. Baseball is often called America’s pastime and nowhere is its history more tangible than in the Bronx. Yankee Stadium is often listed as one of the best stadiums in sports for good reason. Opened in 2009, Yankee Stadium features the legendary Monument Park, showcasing the retired numbers of some of the greatest players in baseball history. Fans will also love seeing the Yankees on the field, wearing perhaps the most
famous jerseys in American sports: the Yankee pinstripes. And, of course, there is the seventhinning stretch, where fans join together to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” For an even more electric atmosphere, schedule a visit when the Yankees host their longtime rivals, the Boston Red Sox. This rivalry is one of the most storied in sports, transforming any game into a dramatic, high-energy event.
NCAA Softball: Devon Park (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)
College sports provide another uniquely American experience, combining athletic excellence with school pride. One standout
event is the annual Women’s College World Series at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The crown jewel of the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex, Devon Park seats 13,000 spectators, making it the largest softball-specific stadium in the world. During the WCWS, Devon Park comes alive as the event showcases the best teams in college softball, drawing enthusiastic crowds and creating a festive atmosphere that celebrates the growing popularity of women’s sports.
National Football League: Highmark Stadium (Buffalo, New York)
Professional football is hugely popular in the
Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon.
United States and often delivers unmatched game-day drama. While cities across the country are home to fanbases who love their team, one stands out from the rest: The Buffalo Bills. For years, Bills’ faithful have earned a reputation as among the most spirited in the NFL, and their excitement figures to grow this upcoming season with the opening of the new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium. This high-tech stadium will feature a slew of upgraded amenities including enhanced, intimate seating, premium clubs like the Founders and Field Clubs with all-inclusive amenities, and improved fan experience areas. Every Bills game figures to be a spectacle, but visitors attending a matchup against the Bills’ rival, the New England Patriots, can expect a particularly intense atmosphere as decades of competition fuel the crowd’s enthusiasm.
NCAA Football: Autzen Stadium (University of Oregon)
In the Pacific Northwest, the intensity of college football reaches another level when the Oregon Ducks take the field against their rivals, the Washington Huskies. Their rivalry is among the fiercest in the sport and the crowd noise can be deafening as tens of thousands of fans dressed in Oregon’s colors (which change from game to game) cheer, chant and celebrate. But Autzen Stadium isn’t just loud during rivalry games, Oregon fans reach a fevered pitch during each home game. According to USA Today, Autzen Stadium is ranked the sixth loudest college football stadium in the country. For many international visitors, the elaborate tailgating traditions and marching band performances surrounding college football games are just as fascinating as the action on the field. And Oregon does both as well, or better, than most stadiums.
National Basketball Association: Crypto.com Arena and Intuit Dome (Los Angeles, California)
Basketball fans can experience the glamour of the NBA in Los Angeles, where two franchises share the spotlight. The Los Angeles Lakers are among the most successful teams in basketball history and have won 17 championships all time, one behind their arch rivals, the Boston Celtics. The Lakers play in the famed Crypto.com Arena, which has seen a multitude of title-winning teams over the years and lays claim to perhaps the best in-game atmosphere in the NBA. Across town, the Clippers play in the NBA’s newest arena, the spectacular Intuit Dome, which opened in 2024 and cost $2 billion. Intuit Dome is a high-tech, 18,000-seat arena featuring an acre-sized, 360-degree Halo Board and perhaps the most fan-friendly element in the NBA: “The Wall,” a 51-row, steep fan section that features the loudest fans in professional basketball.
National Hockey League: Bridgestone Arena (Nashville, Tennessee)
For hockey enthusiasts, few venues are as lively as a game featuring the Nashville Predators. Located in the heart of one of America’s most vibrant music cities, the team’s home games at Bridgestone Arena are known for some of the NHL’s most feverish crowds. Rivalry matchups with the Chicago Blackhawks often generate especially intense energy, making for a thrilling night of fast-paced action on the ice. Opened in 1996, Bridgestone Arena is not only one of the NHL’s best game-day environments, it has one of the best locations in the country with a variety of live music venues and restaurants steps away from the arena.
Motor Racing: Talladega Superspeedway (Lincoln, Alabama)
Racing fans will find an entirely different kind of spectacle at Talladega Superspeedway, the largest and fastest oval in NASCAR. At 2.66 miles long, the track is famous for dramatic pack racing and heart-pounding finishes as drivers push their cars to extreme speeds. Talladega Speedway opened in 1969 as Alabama International Motor Speedway, and since then, has established itself as one of the best racetracks in the country. The experience goes beyond the race itself as the surrounding fan culture, tailgating and festival-like atmosphere create a uniquely American celebration of speed and competition.

Explore 7 Fabulous American Cities in the Northern Region
A coast-to-coast look at seven U.S. cities where history, culture, food, and unforgettable experiences come together
By Christopher D. Silbernagel
THE NORTHERN REGION of the United States offers unique windows into American life, where Revolutionary-era streets, industrial legacies, celebrated music scenes, and unique food cultures blend with scenic natural backdrops. For international travelers looking to experience more than just the highlights, seven distinct cities provide a deeper, more textured understanding of America that is shaped as much by neighborhood character and regional identity as by the moments that defined the country.
East Coast
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston’s Freedom Trail should be on everyone’s to-do list, connecting 16 historically significant sites like Paul Revere’s House, built in 1680, as well as museums, churches and burial grounds from the American Revolution. The 2.5-mile trail was established in 1951, beginning at Boston Common, the oldest public park in the U.S., guiding visitors along its red brick line and painted pathway to the Bunker Hill Monument, commemorating the famous American Revolution Battle of Bunker Hill.
International travelers looking for more Revolutionary history must pay a visit to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. This interactive floating museum tour begins
Boston, Massachusetts.
with actors reenacting the protest from “The Meeting House,” leading to visitors being able to play their own part in tossing tea into the harbor.
Across the Charles River, Harvard University, America’s oldest institution of higher education, offers a free, student-led guided tour covering famous Harvard Yard, John Harvard statue, Widener Library, and more. For baseball fans—and honestly, even those who aren’t sports fans—Fenway Park is a must for its classic, intimate atmosphere as the oldest baseball stadium in the country.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Located in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, the Liberty Bell, one of America’s most-famous symbols of freedom, and Independence Hall all bring the Revolutionary era to life. Walking through the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution is deeply photogenic and educational. For a deeper dive, a Historic District Walking Tour is highly recommended as guided strolls provide context on Elfreth’s Alley, America’s oldest residential street, Christ Church, and more.
Originally built in 1928 on Fairmount hill, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a
collection of over 240,000 pieces, including “The Gross Clinic” by Thomas Eakins, but is perhaps most famous for its Rocky Steps from the Sylvester Stallone film Rocky. For a taste of the city’s culinary heritage, the vibrant indoor Reading Terminal Market features local foods, Amish specialties, and Pennsylvania Dutch treats. Be sure to try Philly cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and artisanal chocolate.
Midwest Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is brimming with architectural wonders, and perhaps the best way to explore them is with an Architectural River Cruise. These highly rated tours offer genuine expertise and showcase a great variety of architectural types along the Chicago River and even Lake Michigan for wider skyline views of the birthplace of the skyscraper. For a higher photographic perspective of the city, standing on “The Ledge” of the Skydeck at Willis Tower should also be on every traveler’s list.
When it comes to music, Chicago is a true gem for Jazz and Blues Clubs. From the Green Mill for jazz—which is also a former Prohibition-era speakeasy favored by Al Capone—to Kingston Mines for blues,
historic venues are abundant to connect visitors to America’s musical roots.
Foodies will love Chicago for the diversity and uniqueness on offer. Food Tours are available for all types of tastes, covering everything from Chicago hot dogs and Italian beef to multi-cultural wonders from every continent. However, the city’s food culture might be most famous for its deep-dish pizza, with staples like Lou Malnati’s and Pequod’s, the latter of which was featured in the hit TV series The Bear.
Detroit, Michigan
Detroit is a marvel to explore, and its revival is one of the greatest stories in modern American history. A special starting point is Eastern Market, which is renowned for its Saturday market, with hundreds of vendors, and street art murals dedicated to its comeback, various music scenes, and more. Speaking of music, Motown Museum, located in the original “Hitsville U.S.A.” house, features the famous Studio A where artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder recorded many of their hit songs.
Motown is a portmanteau of Detroit’s “Motor City” nickname, in reference to its origin as the birthplace of the American automotive industry with General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford. A self-guided Ford Rouge Factory Tour provides international travelers with a look at its history and future with its multi-sensory, 360-degree theater experience and views of the production line. For the best views of Detroit, look no further than Great Lakes Waterfront, with incredible photo ops of the city skyline and a look across to Canada. There is plenty more to experience here as well with music
festivals, nearby restaurants, and even an outdoor adventure center.
Minneapolis, Minnesota
For international travelers, the scale of Mall of America is intrinsically an attraction. Inside, not only do you have tax-tree shopping and great dining, but a multitude of unique experiences including the indoor Nickelodeon Universe theme park, SEA LIFE Aquarium, Crayola Experience, and the Museum of Illusions.
The Prince Legacy Stops are a must for fans of the artist, with First Avenue, the iconic nightclub featured in Purple Rain, Capri Theater, where he played his first solo gig, and of course Paisley Park, his former home and recording studio-now museum.
Being a part of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minneapolis also excels for nature enthusiasts. But for a different kind of experience, lakes and urban nature harmonize at Lake Bde Maka Ska. Connected to the Chain of Lakes regional trail system, the largest lake in Minneapolis offers a 3.2mile paved loop, three beaches, scenic city views, a restaurant, and more.
West Coast
Portland, Oregon
For beer enthusiasts, Portland has over 80 craft breweries to choose from. The independent, family-owned, and employeeowned Deschutes Brewery is a top choice in the Pearl District. For a smaller indie option in the Buckman neighborhood, pay a visit to Grand Fir Brewing, operated by brewer Whitney Burnside and chef Doug Adams.
Powell’s City of Books is the largest independent bookstore in the world.
Founded in 1971, and located on a city block in downtown Portland, this beloved and iconic four-floor bookstore contains 3,500 sections throughout nine color-coded rooms. Grab a map and a handy basket when you enter and take your time exploring.
Be sure to compliment your next read with third-wave coffee on one of Portland’s coffee culture tours. These guided walking tours will stop at top roasters, cafes, and even historic neighborhoods.
East of the city, nature enthusiasts will enjoy a Columbia River Gorge Excursion. Take a guided boat or bike tour to explore scenic waterfalls like Multnomah Falls and Latourell Falls.
Seattle, Washington
The Pacific Northwest has some of the best natural scenery in the U.S., and if you’re paying a visit to Olympic National Park, it’s best to take it all in on a ferry ride across Puget Sound. Enjoy a quicker and more relaxing ride than a drive and take in the Seattle skyline and the stunning Cascade Mountains.
A visit to the Space Needle provides 360-degree elevated skyline views with the world’s only revolving glass floor. Nearby, visitors will be able to check out the Chihuly Garden and Glass, containing multiple stunning works from the glass studio of Dale Chihuly.
Also located in the city, Pike Place Market first opened in 1907 and is renowned for its “flying fish” fish throwing. There are hundreds of shops to explore within this historic experience, along with great views of Elliott Bay.
Learn more about American aviation with a Boeing Factory Tour in nearby Everett. From a 70-foot-high observation deck, visitors will witness the production and assembly of widebody jets like the 777 inside the world’s largest building by volume.

Receptive Tours Group ”RTG” is anything but a ”Typical Tour Operator”. RTG is a B2B Destination Management Company, a.k.a. a ”ground handler” for our Tour Operator clients from around the globe. RTG is in the business of creating Exceptional Experiences at the Destinations in which we operate. To that end, we adjusted & adapted to what we believed the new normal would look like for the foreseeable future for group travel, bulking up our field staff accordingly, to ensure the needs of our client’s groups are met and exceeded. We reimagined our on-the-ground group & risk management techniques re-focusing them on balancing health & safety with the overall group travel Experience. The consistent superior level of service RTG delivers to each of our partner clients, whether a Senior, Leisure, Cruise, Student or Family groups of 20+ or a full-on Congress, Convention, Corporate, Incentive, or MICE contingent of 500+, would not be possible but for our professional and dynamic “”Red-Jacket”” Field & Management Teams.

Soulful Sounds and Storied History in
ALABAMA
Alabama invites groups to experience a rich blend of heritage, flavor and Southern hospitality
Few states can claim that they have something for everyone, but Alabama absolutely can. Visitors can spend days on the beaches of the Gulf, explore man-made and natural splendors alike, recharge as they hike awe-inspiring forest trails, and even eat their way through the state.
CULTURE
Dive into the rich tapestry of Alabama’s culture, where every note of music and culinary creation tells the story of its heritage. Engage with the traditions that
have shaped Alabama, including the influential Civil Rights movement, celebrated in monuments and museums across the state.
Alabama has a new way to explore the birthplace of Mardi Gras with Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service , connecting New Orleans to Mobile by rail. This coastal route winds past bayous, beaches, and the charming towns of the coast, creating a scenic journey that feels as memorable as the destination itself. A soulful ride between two historic, French-rooted cities that share
a love for culture, cuisine, and celebration. Mobile offers endless charm — a vibrant gateway to Alabama’s rich culture and unforgettable experiences.
Gulf Shores offers a beach getaway along Alabama’s stunning coastline where you can relax on pristine, white sandy beaches. Take the opportunity to explore Gulf State Park and indulge in fresh seafood at local restaurants.
In Huntsville, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center wows visitors each year with the largest collection of space artifacts in
the world. Home to Space Camp where students and families come each year to train like astronauts. Unparalleled in scope and wonder, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center welcomes a million visitors a year from all over the world.
FAME Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals is an active recording studio where founder Rick Hall recorded hundreds of hits, including records by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Etta James, Gregg Allman, the group Alabama, Steven Tyler, Keb Mo and many others. Tours of the studio take visitors back in time to what it was like to record during this time in history.
Known as the famous 3614 Jackson Highway Studio, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield is a recording studio known as the Mecca for music lovers. Passionate music lovers want to see and feel why Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones referred to Muscle Shoals and 3614 as “Rock and Roll Heaven.”
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame is a 12,500-square-foot exhibit hall that honors Alabama musical legends who have contributed to the legacy of the music industry. Memorabilia from Tammy Wynette, The Commodores, Nat King Cole, W.C. Handy, Lionel Richie, the group Alabama and Hank Williams are on display at the museum.
FOOD
Celebrate Alabama’s incredible food scene with a journey through its diverse dining experiences, from award-winning restaurants and trendy breweries to hidden gem eateries. Alabama’s Barbecue Trail is a testament to the state’s dedication to preserving and celebrating its culinary heritage. From pitmasters who perfected the art of slowcooked meats to secret family recipes for sauces and rubs, Alabama’s barbecue history is as rich and diverse as its flavors. Here are a few spots that can be found on the trail: Big Bob Gibson in Decatur was founded in 1925 and has become an institution in Alabama’s barbecue scene. The restaurant is known for its legendary white sauce, a tangy, mayonnaise-based sauce that complements smoked chicken. The restaurant has won numerous awards and accolades over the years.
ADVERTORIAL
Founded in 1958, by John “Big Daddy” Bishop, Dreamland Barbeque in Tuscaloosa has become famous for its ribs served with their incredibly flavorful barbecue sauce. The restaurant’s ambiance is as authentic as it gets, with a down-home feel that is inviting and welcoming.
The flavors of seafood arriving daily on Alabama’s beaches offer culinary satisfaction like no other. Fresh oysters, succulent shrimp, and delightful crab baked, fried, or sauteed. In Gulf Shores/ Orange Beach , sample Creole Oysters at Cobalt Restaurant or eat them raw, with garlic and parmesan, or cooked Rockefeller. Whatever way you choose, the oysters at this waterfront restaurant are bursting with flavor.
Follow up your experience with the Oyster Trail, Crab Trail, or Gumbo Trail at restaurants found all along the sugar-white sands of the Gulf. A crowd favorite, COASTAL Orange Beach provides a waterfront restaurant, an open-air bar, and a lifestyle store, all with tremendous beachfront views. Enjoy live music while taking in the views. Burgers, steaks, and gumbo are plentiful, too, for the beach traveler who loves a relaxing beach getaway with all the flavors.
Mobile is known for its historic and coastal charm with French influences. The vibrant history of the city includes the first-ever Mardi Gras celebration and parade that dates back to 1703. Like most Alabama cities, Mobile has come into its own with its focus on a thriving culinary scene filled with Southern and Creole flavors harmoniously blended with the freshest seafood that can be found along the Gulf.
The Noble South is located in the heart of downtown Mobile and is a beacon of Southern sophistication. The menu offers items that are made with local produce and seafood. Chef Rainosek puts a modern twist on Southern dishes like his Gulf Shrimp and grits with a seared seasonal duck breast aimed at showcasing the region’s heritage.
Wintzell’s Oyster House is an iconic institution in Mobile and has been serving delicious seafood since 1938. Wintzell’s is known for its oysters, but there also are Creole-inspired dishes such as gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish étouffée. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere steeped in historic charm.
Birmingham is known for its food scene. Boasting a dozen MICHELIN-recommended restaurants and chefs, Birmingham serves up southern flavor and hospitality like no other. Bottega , known for its acclaimed Italian-inspired dishes and fine dining, received a prestigious MICHELIN distinguished service award in 2025. Awardwinning restaurants Helen and Bayonet serve fresh dishes featuring prime meats, seafood, and locally inspired flavors that celebrate the history and strength of farmers, fisheries, and partners in Alabama. Chez FonFon offers French Cuisine from charcuterie to Chantilly Cream cake. Delicious bites and desserts are on display from an award-winning chef in a French bistro. These restaurants are known for their food by James Beard Award-winning Chefs.
SOUTHERN HISTORY
Immerse yourself in the heart of Alabama’s storied past, exploring its rich tapestry from the early days of Native American settlements to the pivotal roles it played in the Civil War. Alabama’s history isn’t just a series of events; it’s a living narrative etched into the very soil of the state, from the historic battlefields to the sacred sites of ancient civilizations. Dive into Alabama’s heritage at landmarks steeped in the tales of Civil Rights milestones, or walk the trails once trodden by the state’s earliest inhabitants.
In Birmingham, the Magic City is known for its industrial past and dynamic present. Visitors should explore The Civil Rights Institute , a powerful museum that chronicles the city and state’s role in the civil rights movement. They also should check out the many city-central green spaces and murals showcasing vibrant history and street art.
Venturing southward to Montgomery, the state capital, your list should include the Legacy Museum , the National Memorial for Peace and Justice , the Freedom Sculpture Park , and Montgomery Square —four interconnected legacy sites that highlight the racial struggles in America. You’ll also take a stroll along the historic Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached.

Discover Illinois’ Great Rivers & Routes
This stretch of southwest Illinois delivers a rich blend of Americana, history and unforgettable group adventures
There’s only one place in America where the Mother Road of Route 66 meets the Great River Road and that’s in the Great Rivers & Routes region of southwest Illinois. It’s a land that’s full of adventure, scenic wonders and the classic Americana charm of once famous highways and byways.
Following the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles through 10 states, The Great River Road lives up to its name and then some. In Illinois, the historic byway follows the Mississippi through charming river towns, bustling urban cities, stunning state parks and historic sites as it travels the western border of the state for more than 550 miles.
Road trippers seeking to savor one of the most scenic drives in the country can journey down historic Route 66 from Virden to just outside St. Louis. Here they will encounter a slew of attractions from the classic to the quirky that make Route 66 famous. Adventurers can also shift gears and merge onto the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway.
WEST END SERVICE STATION (EDWARDSVILLE, IL)
West End Service Station is one of Edwardsville’s few remaining Route 66 landmarks and one of two original Route 66 service
stations left in southwest Illinois.
From 1927 through 1964, around the time that Route 66 bypassed Edwardsville, the station served as a fuel stop and service center. Travelers from near and far were eager to explore, and they needed gas, tires and maintenance to do that. Luckily for them, the West End Service Station could meet their needs.
For the next 55 years (until 2019), it shifted to a different kind of service: dentistry. In 2022, the City of Edwardsville partnered with Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau to purchase and
restore this Route 66 landmark to map out the history of the iconic highway in Edwardsville. It opened in June 2023 as a Route 66 interpretive center to take visitors on a nostalgic trip back in time through stories, photos and souvenirs.
IT’S ELECTRIC NEON SIGN PARK (GRANITE CITY, IL)
In southwestern Illinois, near St. Louis, the past comes to life at Granite City’s It’s Electric Neon Sign Park, where restored neon signs from local businesses, plus large murals, celebrate the town’s place on Route 66. The signs are turned on from dusk to dawn. At this park, three restored neon signs from local businesses, plus two large murals, celebrate the town’s place on America’s Mother Road.
CAHOKIA MOUNDS STATE HISTORIC SITE (COLLINSVILLE, IL)
