Not only are trip leaders responsible for adhering to educational travel guidelines, but they are also tasked with ensuring a safe and successful experience. Because selecting the right chaperones is essential and often tricky outside of parent volunteers, we have compiled some of the best student travel tips to help you simplify the process.

Educators, on the other hand, possess unique competence in handling large groups of learners, and they also share expertise in aligning the educational goals of the excursion. They are also better equipped to manage unforeseen circumstances during educational trips due to their experience in student travel. Learners will likely be more engaged when listening to someone with whom they already have a rapport. Educators who are revered as leaders within the school community and have taken the time to build strong bonds with their class will significantly

Educational travel provides a unique experience for both schoolchildren and academic leaders. By breaking up the monotony of everyday classroom instruction, educators get the opportunity to provide a positive learning experience. Students, alongside instructors, can learn new skills through these out-of-classroom experiences. Gaining new perspectives and strengthening your leadership skills can help you connect with pupils in more meaningful ways. 20

This is where teacher collaboration can be beneficial. One way to reduce the stress of planning a school trip is to create a clear outline with a designated role for each accompanying faculty member. Some essential roles to consider are medical support, logistics and communication with parents. Medical support should be at the top of the list of responsibilities when planning a school outing. It should encompass allergies and chronic health conditions, as well as first aid and procedures to follow in the event of a medical crisis. Find a certified instructor who has first-aid experience for this role to ensure that the needs

of all students are being adequately met. Edutopia offers additional guidance on responding to medical emergencies in the classroom. The logistics of educational travel are another crucial consideration. This requires figuring out transportation, scheduling a date and location, and coordinating with other group leaders. Assign the logistics role to the supervisor of the group who is the most organized or has prior experience with field trips. Parent-teacher communication is another significant aspect. Before any school trip can begin, all class participants need a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. While times have changed, the foundation for a professional and safe student travel experience has not. Plans still should include expectations for students, destination information, insurance options, hotels and dining facilities, transportation, and the location of medical facilities, just to mention a few. What is often overlooked is having a plan B when plan A doesn’t work out. It is equally important to account for the unexpected. This is essential advice for all travelers and even more important when traveling internationally. A backup plan addresses what to do when things go wrong. Have conversations with your travel organizer before your trip. You each need to know what support to expect and what each organization’s responsibility is. Having a strategy for every scenario is impossible, but understanding how you will work with your tour organizer if something unexpected arises is critical.

Since the pandemic, we have seen an increase in health and safety plans that address the mental health of students on tour. This may include reducing the number of stops in a day, allowing more “down time” for rest, guided conversations for student reflections and concerns that may develop based on their individual perspective, race and ethnicity. We have seen increased requests that address transgender students and their needs and perspectives while on tour. These are essential items that should be a part of the planning process discussions and included in the crisis management plan. ne riot, one ranger” is a phrase made famous by Texas Ranger Captain W.J. McDonald in the very early 1900s. McDonald was called upon to stop a forbidden prizefight and ease an angry mob. When he stepped off the train, the puzzled mayor asked, “Where are the others?” To that, McDonald replied, “Hell, ain’t I enough? There’s only one riot, isn’t there?” It was the reputation of the early Texas Rangers that personified an icon of rugged individualism, courage, honesty, and virtue. They have created an image that criminals fear and children idolize. They celebrated their 200th anniversary in 2023.

A stunning natural attraction, located about 30 minutes north of Redding, the Lake Shasta Caverns were formed over 200 million years ago by flowing water and are made entirely of limestone. Officially discovered in 1878 and declared a National Natural Landmark in 2012, the caverns feature a variety of formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, columns, flowstone, and helictites. Visitors reach the caverns via a boat ride across Shasta Lake and a scenic bus ride up the mountain. Guided tours, including the boat and bus rides, are available year-round and typically last about two hours. The tour involves navigating approximately 600 cavern stairs in total.

COLEMAN NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY

The Coleman National Fish Hatchery is a critical facility for the propagation of Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. Established in 1942, it was designed to mitigate the loss of natural spawning habitats caused by the construction of Shasta and Keswick Dams, which blocked access to upstream spawning grounds. It produces approximately 12 million fall Chinook salmon, 1 million late-fall Chinook salmon, 200,000 winter Chinook salmon, and 600,000 steelhead trout annually. The hatchery is open daily for self-guided tours from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Adult Chinook salmon viewing is best in October, with spawning occurring from early October to mid-November. In 2025, the Rockettes are celebrating their 100th year as America’s longest-running precision dance company. Founded in St. Louis, Missouri, and later making their home in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, the Rockettes have a deeprooted history. Starting with just sixteen women, the troop grew to a line of thirty-six. Radio City Music Hall has hosted the Rockettes since 1933 and has remained their home ever since. Your students will be transported back in time as they explore the historical landmark. During the Christmas Spectacular, the Rockettes take center stage through iconic choreography, innovative technology, and show-stopping performances. Students will be captivated by beloved scenes like “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”, which is the only number in the show to be unchanged and longstanding since the very first show. “New York at Christmas” features the Rockettes touring around New York City’s brightest landmarks in an iconic red open-top tour bus. Your students can explore the whole city with the Rockettes, while just sitting in their seat! A new number, “We Need A Little Christmas,” features holographic effects that allow Santa to interact with the performance, creating a truly magical moment full of holiday spirit. Each number holds awe and excitement that your students cannot miss! The Rockettes have been part of Americana throughout their history: they were among the first entertainers to volunteer for the USO during WWII, entertaining troops both at home and abroad – a partnership that continued into the 2010s – and they have performed annually in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1957. Over the years, the Rockettes have starred in other

original productions at Radio City – including a long running Easter Extravaganza, New York Spring Spectacular, and New York Spectacular. In 1988, the Rockettes performed in the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and the dance company has performed for multiple United States Presidents of both parties, including at two Presidential Inaugurations and other Presidential celebrations.

SHOWCASE A miniscale world of towns, locomotives and miles of tracks

orthlandz is a unique and exciting place in Flemington, New Jersey. It is best known for having the world’s largest model railroad. This magical place was created by Bruce Zaccagnino, who started it as a small project in his basement. Over time, it grew into a huge attraction visited by people from all over the world. Northlandz covers 52,000 square feet and has over eight miles of tiny train tracks. Visitors can walk through beautiful miniature worlds full of tiny towns, tall mountains, long bridges, tunnels, and detailed landscapes. Trains move through each scene, making it feel like a little world brought to life. Every corner has something new to see, and the amazing details make it fun for kids and adults alike.

NEWEST EXHIBIT: HARBOR WETLANDS

Hundreds of years ago, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor was a tidal salt marsh surrounded by forests. By mimicking the natural salt marsh habitat that once existed in Baltimore City, Harbor Wetland is reintroducing a critical ecosystem. In the process, it provides green infrastructure that promotes healthy water; attracts native species like blue crabs, American eels, Eastern oysters and night herons; and teaches students and guests about wetland ecosystems. Did you know that there are river otters in Baltimore? Before the exhibit even opened, otters were spotted exploring the wetlands. NEW EXHIBIT ARTIFACTS Among these are four rare books published during the witch trials period. These include a 1600 edition of Heinrich Kramer’s infamous Malleus Maleficarum (“The Hammer of Witches”), a 1586 edition of Johann Weyer’s De Praestigiis Daemonum, a 1729 edition of The Secrets of the Invisible World Disclos’d written by Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe), and a 1796 edition of Robert Calef’s famous condemnation of the Salem witch trials More Wonders of the Invisible World. Each of these books offers an important perspective on the early modern belief in witchcraft, ranging from the notorious Malleus Maleficarum, a witch hunter’s manual second only to the Bible in terms of sales for nearly two centuries, to De Praestigiis Daemonum considered to be the first notable book to openly criticize the witch persecutions in Europe. The exhibit also includes several objects relating to the evolving image of the witch in popular culture and the history of magic.
