isconsin is home to internationally acclaimed art museums, diverse live theater and engaging museums that bring the state’s rich history to life. From homestead recreations to sophisticated galleries, there are numerous cultural attractions to experience throughout the Badger State.

Learn about the state’s Scandinavian heritage at Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center, a Norwegian homestead in Coon Valley.

Set in the dramatic Driftless Area of high hills and green valleys, this site focuses on the Norwegian immigrants who settled here in the 19th century. Tour a 1890s restored log cabin, take a refreshing walk along the trails and enjoy a box lunch in an open-air shelter.

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center near Ashland educates guests on the region’s Native American heritage and mining history.

Guests can enjoy interactive stations, a movie theater and the Community of Life Mural: six large vignettes that depict humans interacting with nature over thousands of years. A park ranger can accompany groups on boardwalk trails that pass through the restored wetlands that surround the center.

The Great Lakes’ rich maritime history is best appreciated at the dozens of preserved lighthouses that line the Wisconsin coast. North Point Lighthouse, located in Milwaukee’s Lake Park, dates back to 1888 and has been restored to appear as it did in 1912. Customized tours allow groups to explore the keeper’s quarters, admire the Lake Michigan shoreline from the observation deck and enjoy a picnic on the grounds. The city of Manitowoc is home to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Explore the nation’s most completely restored WWII submarine, stroll 19th century streets of a shipbuilding town, sail a boat down the river and browse an assortment of exhibits.

Live theater performances are an excellent option for your group’s Wisconsin experience. Circle Wisconsin’s theater members offer generous group discounts, and venues are often located near restaurants to minimize motorcoach stops. Best-known for its cherry tree groves and charming resort towns, Door County is also home to the nation’s oldest resident summer theater. Founded in 1935, Peninsula Players Theater stages comedies, dramas and musicals in a unique woodland amphitheater with heated floorboards. Arrive early for sunset views of Green Bay or a drink in the beer garden before enjoying a performance. Productions range from murder mysteries to uplifting Broadway musicals, so there will be a selection every season to appeal to your group’s taste.

Northern Sky Theater is a summer theater experience outdoors under the starry sky and located in the beautiful Peninsula State Park in Door County. Only original musical shows are presented that have been created specifically for Northern Sky audiences. Shows are performed here before being seen anywhere else. In the fall season, head indoors to enjoy an original show at the new Creative Center Gould Theater.

Groups staying in the Lake Geneva area will want to stop by the Dancing Horses Theatre in Delevan, which presents a dazzling spectacle of equestrian artistry. Horses in a variety of

breeds perform with exacting precision alongside their trainers in a 90-minute show that concludes with Dancing Waters, which features hundreds of water jets choreographed in a kaleidoscope of changing lights. Special holiday shows are available from November to January. Packages include the performance, a meal and an exotic bird show with parrots singing, roller skating and playing basketball. On backstage tours, visitors meet the trainers and horses up-close. Also in Delavan is Rosewood, which offers lunch, brunch and dinner packages (with choice of plated or buffet menus) that include a cabaret show by entertainers Mark and Gretchen Hladish. New to Rosewood is “Picnic on the Patio," where guests sit around firepits and enjoy grilled entrees while performers stroll through the cabana environment.

The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, a cultural magnet in downtown Milwaukee, is home to the Milwaukee Ballet Company and Florentine Opera Company. The venue also hosts the popular Broadway series, and 2022 productions will include Pretty Woman, Cats and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In Baraboo, audiences can watch live performances at venues that recall the town’s legacy as the former winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. Circus and base of operations for other circuses early in the 20th century. Circus World, a themed attraction set on the banks of the Baraboo River, offers Big Top performances every summer, complete with elephants, horses, dogs, clowns, acrobats, jugglers and aerialists.

The annual Big Top Parade will pass downtown’s Al. Ringling Theatre, built in 1915 by the eldest of the world-famous Ringling brothers. The beautifully restored playhouse features live touring shows, classic films, local theater productions, facility tours and demonstrations on its Mighty Barton Organ.

South of Milwaukee is the Racine Art Museum, which boasts the largest contemporary craft collection in the United States. Docents will guide you through a building that features over 5,000 pieces of ceramic, fiber and metal.

Visitors to Oshkosh will not want to miss Paine Art Center and Gardens, which includes 20 themed areas across four acres that surround an English country mansion. Paved walkways pass by elegant fountains, sculptures and impeccably manicured beds that recall the elegant British estates of the 19th century. The property also hosts a rotating collection of art exhibitions and festive holiday displays. Across the street is the award-winning Oshkosh Public Museum, which houses interactive exhibits in a renovated Edwardian-era home. Visitors can explore the richness of prehistoric life in the “People of the Waters” exhibition and marvel at the beautiful interiors designed by the famous Tiffany Studios.

A Queen Anne-style mansion completed in 1893, the Rahr-West Art Museum in Manitowoc welcomes groups who want to admire the original furnishings or walk through the gallery spaces that rotate eight times a year. The museum’s permanent collection includes works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, and you can see the replica of a Sputnik IV satellite fragment that fell to Earth outside the museum.

The John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan houses six large gallery spaces that showcase the connection between art and industry, with exhibits made from iron, enamel and brass.

Guests will want to stop in the famous bathrooms, whose tiles depict everything from medieval murals to farm animals. Harley-Davidson, one of America’s most iconic brands, was founded here in 1904, and you can learn about the evolution of the motorcycle, racing history and pop culture at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Located along the Menomonee River, this industrial-inspired complex houses hundreds of rare vehicles and posters for films like Easy Rider.

Groups can also pose for photos along an array of Harley-Davidson motorcycles that span the company’s 117-year history.

A few miles south of Lambeau Field is the Oneida Nation, a federally recognized tribe of Oneida people who welcome visitors to experience their culture. Tours include a look at the tribe’s buffalo herd from an observation deck, an explanation of the emerging Longhouse Village and shopping for beadwork, corn husk dolls and other crafts at Oneida Nation Museum. Homeopathic and herbal remedies are a specialty at Oneida Market. Vendors sell sweetgrass, maple syrup, up to 35 kinds of apples and much more at the weekly outdoor Oneida Farmers Market.

Be sure to explore Green Bay Botanical Garden, which includes 47 acres of display gardens and 65,000 plants from around the world. With 300,000 annual spring blooms, concerts at the outdoor amphitheater and a nature-inspired holiday light show, there are engaging group activities for every season. Guided tours are available for motorcoach tours and include stops in the formal gardens, woodland trails and the famous Schierl Wellhouse.

The National Railroad Museum in neighboring Ashwaubenon is dedicated to railroad history and among the nation’s largest devoted to this mode of transportation. Take a 25-minute narrated train ride and learn about everything from steam power to hobo culture. Check out the Dwight D. Eisenhower locomotive, the only one of its kind left in the United States.

LAKE WINNEBAGO REGION

EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh is one of the most extensive aviation attractions in the world. Guests can marvel at over 20,000 historic objects in exhibits that include “Women Flyers of WWII” and “Huey: The Workhorse of Vietnam.” A SpaceShipOne exhibit uses immersive sound and lighting effects to tell the story of a mission to space aboard the aircraft. Groups visiting Oshkosh can also hear a symphonic performance at the Grand Oshkosh Opera House, enjoy a stroll in Menominee Park and browse retail deals at the Shoppes at Oshkosh.

Appleton—the largest of the Fox Cities—is home to the Hearthstone Historic Museum. This home was the first in the world powered by Thomas Edison’s centrally located hydroelectric system, and guests can admire the Victorian mansion’s original light fixtures, intricate woodwork and stained-glass windows. More beautiful artwork awaits at the Bergstrom Mahler Museum of Glass, which holds the largest, most representative collection of glass paperweights in the world. You can also visit the History Museum at the Castle, where you can experience magic tricks made famous by Appleton’s most famous former resident: Harry Houdini.

KENOSHA/RACINE

outdoor activities along Lake Michigan, world-class art museums and rich history. The Civil War Museum, the second-largest Civil War museum in the country, focuses on the contributions of the Upper Midwest to the war and the stories of soldiers and civilians alike during the conflict. The museum’s centerpiece is the “Fiery Trial” exhibit, which immerses visitors in a Civil War battle with authentic visual and auditory effects. Groups can also learn about natural history at the Kenosha Public Museum, ride through downtown on the Electric Streetcar and learn about 19th century sailors at the 1866 Southport Lighthouse.

Wisconsin-born architect Frank Lloyd Wright helped popularize the Prairie Style and Usonian styles across the United States, and you can tour several of his designs in the Racine area. The SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower is the architect’s largest commercial project, a 15-level structure distinguished by alternating bands of brickwork and glass tubing. The three-story Great Workroom is supported by 62 concrete dendriform columns that resemble lily pads and Wrights own desk, which is characterized by rounded corners and swivel drawers. You can also tour Wingspread in nearby Wind Point. Designed for SC Johnson’s then-president H.F. Johnson, Jr., the building consists of four spokes connected to a central living space that contains an immense chimney with five fireplaces. No visit to Racine is complete without sampling the city’s famous kringle—a flaky Danish pastry stuffed with fruit or nut filling.

The state’s varied environments include the expansive Lake Michigan shoreline, rolling kettle moraine landscapes along the Mississippi River and lush woodlands intersected by streams and

From mid-April to early November, the one-hour Lower Dells tour showcases unusual rock formations like Hawk’s Bill and Baby Grand Piano, while the two-hour Upper Dells tour includes stops to walk through the cool passageways of Witches Gulch and witness the famous dog leap at Stand Rock. Another Dells must is a rollicking ride on the World War II amphibious vehicles that are the Original Wisconsin Ducks. This forest-and-water adventure is highlighted by barreling down Roller Coaster Hill and splashdowns into the Wisconsin River and Lake Delton.

South of Milwaukee in Sturtevant is Apple Holler, a 78-acre attraction that oversees farmland, orchards and a family restaurant dedicated to the delicious magic of apples. This preserved 1849 Greek Revival building served as a stagecoach inn for those traveling between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, and you can see over 70 horse-drawn and hand-drawn vehicles in the property’s Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum. Groups can register for a tour to learn about 19 th century hotels, watch a blacksmith and ride a horse-drawn buggy. If you are visiting Sheboygan for the holiday season, spend your evening at Making Spirits Bright. This festival, which runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas, takes visitors through the winding trails of Evergreen Park to admire thousands of lights festooning trees, with shapes from gingerbread houses to the Eiffel Tower. Additional activities include a visit from Santa Claus, Christmas carols sung by local choirs and hot cocoa. Tonight, enjoy dinner on the shores of Lake Michigan and one of the many restaurants found in the historic town of Port Washington in Ozaukee County. Other attractions in the county include Cedar Creek Settlement and Harrington Beach State Park. Take a step back in time at Pioneer Village in Saukville, which is operated by the Ozaukee County Historical Society. A collection of over 24 restored buildings dating back to the 1840s to early 1900s are in a natural village setting. You can also tour the Port Washington Light, which was a Coast Guard Station and now houses a collection of preserved Great Lakes maritime artifacts.

MIDDLETON, MADISON, MONROE

iddleton—minutes away from the state capital and home to numerous lodging options—is a great hub-and-spoke city for motorcoach groups planning a regional itinerary. ontinue your trip in Fort Atkinson, which was founded in 1832 by General Henry Atkinson. You can see a replica of the original fort at the Hoard Historical Museum, which also includes exhibits on the city’s dairy heritage and connection to former Wisconsin Governor William Hoard. Fort Atkinson also features a charming downtown along the rock river with welcoming Irish pubs and preserved 19th century architecture.

Continue south to Janesville and tour the Rotary Botanical Gardens, a 20-acre property that showcases plants from Japan, Italy and France. Other group-friendly Janesville attractions include Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center, Daluge Farm and Fermenting Cellars Winery.

Your itinerary should also include the Milton House Museum, which was an important Underground Railroad stop in the 1860s and once hosted prominent abolitionist Sojourner Truth.

Large parties are encouraged to register for a two-hour tour in which a staff member explains crane biology and conservation efforts abroad. The center also hosts numerous group-friendly events throughout the year, including the Cranes of the World Festival (which welcomes international bird experts) and keeper talks (where volunteers provide a behind-the-scenes look at the birds’ diet and medical needs).
