Sports Illinois Huddle

Each year, tournament directors and events rights holders are invited to take part in the two-day Sports Illinois Huddle conference that features many Illinois CVBs and sports commissions.

The Sports Illinois Huddle is an educational conference/tradeshow which features an appointment-based trade show for rights holders, tournament directors and CVB representatives to discuss upcoming events and tournaments. The conference also offers guest speakers from the sports industry, educational sessions covering new trends and ideas, along with a slew of networking opportunities. The conference is similar to many industry conferences with regard to having one-on-one appointments, industry seminars and off-site entertainment designed specifically for Illinois.

The inaugural Huddle was hosted in 2009 in Lincolnshire within Lake County and since then, the annual show has traveled around the state to different member communities.

“Our communities have proven that sporting events are a highly effective partner in the tourism industry to driving economic impact,” said Greg Mihalich of the Illinois Office of Tourism. “The Sports Illinois Huddle is an important and effective component for our state and communities to continue to showcase why we are a leader in the sports tourism industry.”

events to the state, generating well over $13.2 million in economic impact, according to the Illinois Office of Tourism. It has helped the state attract such major sports organizations as Airsoft Republic, Game Day USA, the United States Specialty Sports Association, the Professional Disc Golf Association, USA Ultimate, the American Cornhole Association and NXT Lacrosse. “(The Sports Illinois Huddle) was fantastic,” said David Raflo, manager of events for USA Ultimate. “I got to meet folks from DMOs that I haven’t met before, I got to deepen relationships with some others and the networking opportunities were fantastic, I really enjoyed the experience all around.”

“Why attend the Sports Illinois Huddle? Because it checks all the boxes,” said Don Flynn, vice president of Business Development for Game Day USA. “One-on-one meetings with the top CVBs and sports commissions from around the state. One-on-one meetings with the top event planners and tournament organizers in the region. Excellent industry speakers and panel discussions. Huddle Impact Grant. The grant was funded by Sports Illinois members at $1,000 and matched by the local host, the Rockford Area CVB, to equal a $2,000 scholarship in 2018. The grant is available to any local (local to the host organizing city) nonprofit 501 (c) (3) that runs positive sports programming.

The winner of the 2018 grant was the Rockford Park District Foundation, a Rockford-area nonprofit, and will go toward its Youth Sport Fit Program, which offers a wide range of sport training activities to more than 2,600 area youths. This program occurs each summer for six weeks during the months of June and July at eight different playground parks and six community centers.

“The Rockford Park District team does an exceptional job improving the Rockford community in a variety of ways. Their plan to support youth in our community by giving them more opportunities to play in a variety of sports activities is right in line with the purpose of this grant program,” said Lindsay Arellano, RACVB vice president of sales and service and Sports Illinois chair. “The Sports Illinois members hope that with this grant program we can impact sports programming on a local level in a variety of communities in Illinois for years to come.”

With so many top-notch artisans plying their trade within state lines, the Illinois Office of Tourism established an initiative called Illinois Made to showcase its luminaries.

Illinois Made features those who craft, design and invent and gives an intimate glimpse into the creation process of professionals across the state, from pizzerias and barbecue joints to those who create art and pottery. Sports fans, however, will be interested in the state’s breweries and bat makers.

Homemade Brew

Regardless of whether your team wins or loses, Illinois has a slew of breweries and distilleries where you can joyously exalt a victory or drown your sorrows after an agonizing defeat.

Big Muddy Brewing

Prior to prohibition banning alcohol sales in the United States between 1920 and 1933, Murphysboro, a small Southern Illinois town, was home to a thriving brewery. Big Muddy Brewing is doing its part to return Murphysboro to those halcyon days, as this microbrewery creates small batches of craft beer for enthusiasts to enjoy. Big Muddy also offers tours of the operation and encourages visitors to enjoy samples of its product.

Scratch Brewing Company

Scratch Brewing Company, in the Southern Illinois town of Ava, is a microbrewery and farm that resides five miles from the Shawnee National Forest. This bucolic location has earned Scratch a reputation as one of the most idyllic sites to drink beer in the world. Scratch embraces its roots by creating alcohol from farmed and foraged ingredients directly from the land surrounding it, and offers an exceptional selection of beer tastes that include nettle, elderberry, ginger, dandelion, maple sap, hickory, lavender and juniper.

Tangled Roots Brewing Company

A local harvest is at the heart of Tangled Roots Brewing. Located in Ottawa, a town at the confluence of the Illinois and Fox Rivers, Tangled Roots makes use of its fertile surroundings to plant, cultivate and harvest its hand-grown hops and barley just south of the brewery's home base.

Tangled Roots is one of only a few breweries nationwide to grow 100 percent of its own hops and barley. That independent spirit stays true at its brewpub, The Lone Buffalo. Occupying a theater building from the 1800s, the facility repurposes a historic venue for a more modern craft—its rustic decor pairs well with views of working vats and other brewing equipment.

Destihl Brewery

Destihl Brewery

An independent company who opened its first gastro brewpub in 2007 in Normal, Destihl Brewery combines centuries-old global brewing traditions and new American craft brewing techniques to produce a wide variety of beers. It enjoyed such success in a short amount of time that it opened a second location in 2011 in downtown Champaign.

That same year, Destihl made a splash at the Great American Beer Fest in Denver and became a nationally recognized brewery that has since won a multitude of awards. Those seeking to witness the brewing process up close can take a guided tour with beer tastings or a comprehensive tour of brewery operations that is followed by a sampling of beers and culinary creations.

Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery

Stationed near the Abraham Lincoln Home National Heritage Site, Obed and Isaac’s Microbrewery & Eatery offers an eclectic menu and locally crafted beer. The story of Obed & Isaac’s began more than 150 years ago when Obed Lewis married Cordelia Iles and built their family home on the corner of Seventh and Jackson streets. In this charming neighborhood that stands today as a National Historic Site, their kids became friends with the children of another prominent Springfield couple – Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Today, few places in America match Obed and Isaac’s historic flair, contemporary atmosphere and delicious beverages.

Revolution Brewing

Located in Chicago’s Logan Square, Revolution Brewing is the largest independent brewery in Illinois. Beer aficionados come from across the planet to experience its brewpub and taproom, where Revolution produces dozens of beer styles, from IPAs, porters, pilsners, Belgian-style, pale ales and barrel-aged beers. With master brewer Jim Cibak at the helm, Revolution has earned a reputation as possessing one of the most impressive beer menus in the United States, and has been placed on the Brewer’s Association’s Top 50 craft beer list.

Hometown Bats

Those seeking a closer look at the game of baseball can see where many professionals get their most valuable piece of equipment.

Dinger Bats

Ridgway is a small village in southern Illinois that is home to less than 1,000 people. It is also the home of Dinger Bats, the brainchild of Kyle Drone who founded the company with his father Randy. In Dinger Bats’ earlier days, Kyle made bats for players he knew from his time playing college baseball. Since then, the company, whose manufacturing plant resides on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest, has grown to the point Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber used a Dinger Bat in the 2016 World Series, where he hit a robust .412. Schwarber is one of dozens of young sluggers who step up to the plate brandishing a Dinger Bat, which has earned a reputation as one of the best bats in the industry.

Homewood Bat Co.

Fans of the National Pastime can visit Homewood Bat Co., a baseball bat boutique in Homewood that was born in 2015. Since its inception, owner Todd Pals has created bats for little leaguers, college sluggers and even Major League Baseball players, including 2016 World Series Most Valuable Player Ben Zobrist. Homewood Bat Co. is one of only a select few makers authorized to sell to Major League Baseball, as the company manufactures and sells professional grade, wood baseball bats made from ash, yellow birch and maple. Visitors can watch the bat-making process at the facility and a batting cage enables patrons to test the bats onsite. Sports: Soccer, softball, baseball, football, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby Olympic Park has hosted thousands of soccer and basketball games. The 72-acre sports venue features eight lighted synthetic-turf soccer fields and two natural-grass fields. Some of the turf fields are also marked to be used for football games. In addition, the venue offers five softball/ baseball fields, all of which are available for practice, games and tournaments.

Harper College, located in Palatine, is home to the Harper Hawks Intercollegiate sports teams.

The campus features the recently renovated Health and Recreation Center that can host a multitude of court/mat sports in the fieldhouse.

The building also features a 6-lane pool and fitness center. Harper College also has a new partnership with Northwest Community Hospital which includes a new outpatient care center on-site.

4. Melas Park Athletic Complex

Sports: Football, soccer, baseball, softball Melas Park is a premier sports venue that plays host to a range of sports events. It includes four lighted softball fields and one soccer field.

The softball fields were updated with CoolPlay synthetic turf, making for safer and cooler playing surface. It also allows for games to proceed even after harsh weather conditions, as the turf remains playable despite large amounts of rain.

The outdoor complex’s 20 fields over its more than 110 acres mean the location is able to host larger tournament events without delays from waiting for available field space.

Lake County proves once again at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex that it can’t be beat when it comes to hosting any variety of sporting events. Able to accommodate a range of competitive outdoor sports, the complex’s 41 acres covers 27 different fields, including 11 diamonds, three tennis courts and a full stadium. No fan will go hungry here either, as this location has a concession stand serving drinks, chips, candy, nachos, hotdogs and grilled items for larger events as well as vending machines. The complex has both permanent and portable restrooms.

If coming from Chicago or northern states such as Wisconsin or Minnesota, take Interstate 94 to Interstate 88 and take the IL-31 exit 117 toward Aurora/Batavia. If coming from the south, take Interstate 65 to Interstate 88 and if coming from the west, take Interstate 80 to Interstate 88. Chicago O’Hare International Airport was once known as the busiest airport in the world and has direct flights to 217 destinations. Midway International Airport is another great option for traveling teams.

Situation in Lynwood, Ho-Chunk enterprise has hosted numerous events, such as Prime Time Sports Basketball Tournament, the American Cornhole Organization Chicago Southland Major and American Tae-Kwon-Do Association Class “A” Tournament. The Southland Center now features baseball fields, hardwood basketball courts, Desso Turf and 100,000 square feet of event space for any kind of indoor affair. With the addition of 10 portable courts (available April – October), the Southland Center will be the largest indoor basketball and volleyball facility in Illinois.

2. SeatGeek Stadium

Sports: Rugby, soccer (other sports may be considered) Formerly known as Toyota Park, SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview is where you’ll find the Major League’s Chicago Fire. Sports: Softball Known as the chosen venue for the prestigious USA Softball 12A National Championship in 2019, Champion Fields provides the essentials for hosting girls’ slow pitch and adults' fast pitch games. This gorgeous facility, located in Normal, is comprised of eight brightly lit fields in the main complex and two southern lit fields. Scoreboards, bleachers, a P.A. system, covered dugouts and concessions supplement each field.

2. Hancock Stadium Sports: Football Home to the Illinois State University Redbirds football team for more than 50 years, Hancock Stadium is usually decked out in red on game day. This venue became the first in its state to install artificial playing surfaces and has since upgraded its fields in 2018.
