One of the most photographed spots in Elkhart County, this beautifully restored mill is the oldest continuously operating gristmill in Indiana. It’s been producing flour for over 150 years. Hear the rumbling of huge millstones grinding grain into flour as the friendly miller tells all about the process. Flour is for sale, to take home a bag. The beautiful county park surrounding the mill offers the perfect opportunity for a scenic fall nature walk or photo.

From Swiss barns elements to double-gambrel barns, from hay-slings to hay-mows, view some of the area’s most unique architecture found in barns. Many of the farms on the tour have been in the same family for over 100 years. Your guide explains the differences between hay and straw plus why barns are so important to a successful farm.

The spectacular 51,000- sq ft., climate-controlled American Countryside Farmers Market provides a unique group experience with demonstrations, entertainment, cooking shows and special programs. 12:15-2:30 p.m. Garden Tea Party Luncheon with Herb Farm Tour Begin with a “Lovely Lavendar” Garden Tea Party luncheon served by Prairie Trail Herb Farm owner, Renee TroyerCampbell. The presentation of her food is as delightful as its taste. She uses plenty of herbs, of course; always the perfect touch and always fresh from her garden. It’s certain--everyone is in for a treat.

Groups visiting Prairie Trial Farm are greeted by curious alpacas peering over the fence, the rustle of prairie grasses and the aromatic scent of lavender in the air. The greenhouse is filled with nearly 200 varieties of herbs used for flavor, fragrance, health and household purposes plus uncommon perennials and annuals including many “oldfashioned” varieties. Renee Troyer has a vast knowledge of herbs, and she’s always eager to point out unusual plants and tell all about their myriad of uses.

2:45-3:15 p.m. Elkhart County Parks Calendar Garden Self-Guided Walking Tour The Calendar Garden nestled within the River Preserve County Park in Benton is captivating showpiece filled with blooming colors and full moons. Walk under the wisteria filled arbor onto circular paths that lead through a garden where bricks mark the days of the month; plants show the cycle of the seasons; and charming gazebos symbolize the solstice and equinox. Blooms progress in a clockwise pattern, and tucked in between plants are elements of time. There are even concrete moons cleverly placed where the full moon can be observed each month.

The centerpiece -- a pond filled with lush pink water lilies. And just like the seasons, the views in the garden are ever-changing. Time spent in the Calendar Garden is time for all seasons and time groups long remember.

It’s housed in the building that originally served as the county’s first consolidated school. After dinner Rebecca Haarer, a nationally known quilt historian and collector of vintage Indiana quilts, tells about the history of Amish quilting.

Rebecca shows vintage Amish quilts and discusses how they’ve been influenced by the Amish culture in a format she describes as her "quilt museum on the road”. She also points out how changes in society have affected the Amish and their quilts.

Originally the home of the Cosmo Buttermilk Soap Company....next the home of the Chicago-Detroit Bag Factory...and until 1982 the home of the Chase Bag Factory. Now this beautifully renovated building is The Old Bag Factory, home to producing artists and craftsmen as well as a collection of high-quality shops.

Begin at Quilt Designs located in an 1837 log cabin at The Old Bag Factory. This delightful shop is filled with original contemporary quilts like no others. Meet owners, Dave & Shirley Shenk, who explain their philosophy, technique, and showcase their one-of-a-kind trademarked patterns using quilting as an art form. Dave also loves to share stories about some of their noted clients.

Stepping into Benedict’s Nursery is a bit like stepping into a scene from a fairytale – tiny, remarkable plants that make ordinary plants seem huge in comparison fill garden racks and specially made containers. That’s because Esther Benedict specializes in alpines and other unusual species that are seldom seen in a garden shop. It may seem curious that an Old German Baptist woman living in Nappanee is knowledgeable about species that manage to survive in high altitude and harsh dessert terrain, but it’s her hobby. Esther can tell you all about these amazing little plants. She also makes and sells rugged, rock-like hyper-tufa pots ideally suited for these hearty miniatures and gives classes on making your own.

Mac Boyer loves Dahlias and considers them “the most diverse flower in God’s kingdom”. Each summer from late July through September groups can witness that diversity in all its glory at the gorgeous American Dahlia Society Test Garden at Bonneyville Mill County Park. For the past 22 years Mac has managed the garden; each year testing and showcasing about 140 new and different hybrids all grown from seed. Amazingly no two are alike. It’s just a short jaunt from Bonneyville Mill to Mac’s “Blooming Acres” farm in Bristol, where nearly 600 magnificent Dahlias, some as tall as 5 ft., create a breathtaking sea of color. Mac’s enthusiasm is contagious as he welcomes groups to the wonderful world of dahlias and shares secrets to growing prize winning flowers. Groups go home ready to start planting and dreaming of Dahlias as big as dinner plates!

The Glory of Peonies—no admission fee

From mid-May through mid-June, an intoxicating fragrance drifts over a patch of riotous color in Goshen - the peony field in bloom at Oscar Morse Peonies. The farm offers 60 top-ranked, award-winning herbaceous hybrid and lactiflora peonies – with about 1,000 plants in the field. The historic farm’s name honors its original owners, but it’s now owned by Mike and Stephanie Weber. Locals call Stephanie the peony lady. It’s easy to see why. Soon after her family moved to the farm she began indulging her passion for Indiana's state flower. Now the family grows and sells bare root peonies on site and and via the internet. Stephanie gives fascinating guided tours of the field in bloom, giving tips on peony planting and care, pointing out the different cultivars, extolling their virtues and telling the stories behind each variety. For sure, she gets everyone hooked on peonies!
