Canadian Homes Averaging Above The Million-Dollar Mark

By Christopher Invidiata Last February the Toronto Real Estate market hit a major milestone: the average price of a detached home in the 416 area code topped $1-million for the first time. Across the GTA year-over-year home sales surged 11.3 per cent in February and 10 per cent in March. Low interest rates continue to help offset the rise in home prices and are attracting buyers towards diversity and expanding their real estate portfolios.

BILL C-36 MAKES A DENT In Slavery And Exploitation In Canada

By Ashvin Sharma The passing of Bill C-36, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act in Canada last December has resulted in an incremental increase in charges laid with respect to human trafficking offences, specifically those relating to the sex trade.

Under the Act, Canadian law Enforcement Agencies now have authority to charge offenders with purchasing sexual services, receiving a financial or material benefit, advertising the sale of sexual services and communicating for the purpose of selling sexual services in public places where a child could reasonably be expected to be.

As publicity increases through media reports of human trafficking occurrences and arrests, Canadian society is quickly realizing how close to home these types of offences actually are. For example, in March 2015, Toronto police responded to a noise complaint in a downtown Toronto hotel that led to two young men and one young woman being arrested and charged with forcible confinement, advertising of sexual services and gaining material benefit from

In April, a Toronto Police investigation resulted in various raids and arrests as a result of a Canada-wide human trafficking ring spearheaded by the Complex Crip Gangsters, a Toronto-based gang. Victims, who were forced to service 10-15 clients per day and beaten if they did not turn over enough profit, were targeted at dance clubs, group homes, schools and through social media, all places where we expect our children to be safe. Sixty-one human trafficking and drug charges were laid as a result.

April was also a busy month for the Halton Regional Police Service. In the span of a week, two males, aged 44 and 22, were arrested and charged with multiple counts of human trafficking. The victims rescued were both under the age of 18. After the arrests, Halton Regional Police Service released the following statement:

On April 9th 2015, the Halton Regional Police Service were called to an apartment building in the Town of Oakville for a landlord tenant issue. Upon arrival officers located a female inside an apartment that was being used as a bawdy house. Front line officers quickly recognized the indicators of human trafficking and the Human Trafficking and Vice Unit became involved.

The investigation revealed that the female was brought to Canada from China in October 2014 and forced to work in the sex trade. The victim had been forced to provide sexual services from the apartment and provide those proceeds to the accused.

With the Pan Am Games just around the corner, front line agencies and anti-human trafficking organizations are getting ready for the anticipated influx of trafficked victims that we will see present during the Games. Whenever you have an event that brings in massive groups of people nationally or international (Superbowl, Olympics, World Cup) you will see an increase in human trafficking. With Toronto and Halton Region being hosts to some of the activities, it is vital that we become aware of what to look for and to make sure our young people are educated. I often tell people, our gut and our intuition is strong, even if you aren’t an ‘expert’ in human trafficking or know ‘all’ the signs to look for, if you see something that looks odd or gives you a weird feeling, report it. It could be nothing, but it could be a life that you have now helped save. If you see something, say something. Report it to law enforcement.

The existence of human slavery and exploitation is all across Canada and, sadly, occurring closer to our own backyards every day. Young girls and even boys, are having their innocence stolen and being lured into this heinous underworld against their will.

Our job as adults is to protect and educate our children by sharing information that we come into contact with regarding this type of crime. If we all work together to keep our children safe through education, we can prevent further harm and continue to [free them].

His growth was something to be admired, but Fronteddu knew this was only the beginning. When he turned 18, he enrolled himself into the Humber College chef apprenticeship program.
