As business partners and both Principal Designers, Mitch Sauder and Berit Bech epitomize the essence of luxury in home design, seamlessly guiding their clients through every step of the process. “It's about curating a luxury experience,” Bech affirms, and they do this with the help of the dynamic, youthful, and innovative team that makes up the Stamp & Hammer architectural design studio.

A recent build along Vivian Road, nestled in the heart of Cedar Valley, serves as yet another testament to the core values of Stamp & Hammer and the enduring excellence they deliver – a hallmark of luxury that eternally defines their clients’ homes.

Mitch Sauder and Berit Bechʼs dynamic partnership thrives on their contrasting personalities, which complement

each other perfectly. Their collaboration is a fusion of opposites, creating a harmonious balance that enhances their creative process. Together, they provide clients with the best of both worlds, offering a unique blend of creativity, innovation, and pragmatism that sets them apart in the industry.

Bech gives Sauder credit as the creative force. “A big factor when looking at any type of space is the ceiling details and how each room feels, not just in width and length but also in height, and where the light comes in, and then tying that into an overall roof design that makes sense for the overall project. The key to good design is not how it looks but how it feels,” Sauder explains.

“That’s where it starts. We get a wish list and put it all together, but we want it to have that dynamic experience as you walk through the space. For example, with the Vivian project, when we were designing the cabana with the high cathedral ceiling, it generated loft space above the kitchen and the bathroom for sleeping areas; when you’re in there it’s ‘Wow, what a feeling of scale.’”

The Vivian Road project began with an assessment of the 1.5-acre estate to gain an understanding of the walk-out conditions and the adverse grading conditions to ensure the perfect placement of the primary home, and optimizing the placement of each construction, including the pool.

The primary residence features four expansive bedrooms, six lavishly appointed bathrooms, and a sprawling walk-out basement with a full entertaining kitchen, a sauna, gym, shower and steam bath, and a private bedroom and a bathroom.

The exterior exudes a timeless elegance, with pristine white siding against darkframed windows and cedar accents, a nod to the homeownersʼ discerning taste. The wide parking area in front of the house was purposefully designed to accommodate both guests and the various staff who work at the home.

Off to the side of the home is a vegetable garden providing the health-conscious family with seasonally fresh vegetables when they are in residence. The overall project was done in stages due to the family’s travel schedule and was completed in approximately three years.

Amenities within the estate include a detached two-car garage and cabana. The two-car garage houses a luxurious guest suite and music room in the loft space.

The cabana is situated perfectly for entertaining in the backyard along the side of the pool, and the 20’ wide sliding doors fully open, allowing for indoor/ outdoor entertaining. The interiors of both structures seamlessly mirror the exterior aesthetic, characterized by minimalist design elements and a serene colour palette.

The homeowners, a young successful family, entertain constantly. While they spend their winters in Florida, they wanted a home that offered multiple entertaining spaces yet also areas that they could enjoy quietly while hosting.

At any given time, they need to be able to accommodate many guests, yet still have that space and privacy between the various spaces in the home and around the property. The cabana, for example, is perfect as a separate retreat. There are two loft bedroom areas. “It’s almost like a little house since it has a high-end kitchen, bathroom and the beautiful living room and it is perfect for guests,” Bech says.

Indoor-outdoor living also takes precedence through the primary home design as well, with expansive balconies overlooking the lush backyard and pool area.

The two balconies offer intimate places to sit, whether the homeowners are having coffee or cocktails, or visitors are enjoying the view. The balconies have built-in ceiling heaters and the side balcony features a double-sided wood fireplace so these areas also can be enjoyed on cooler summer nights. “We created these different areas so the houseguest could enjoy them while our client at the same time could have (separate) family time. That was their main goal,” says Bech.

Technological sophistication is incorporated throughout the estate, with a fully integrated smart home system ensuring unparalleled comfort and convenience year-round. With the high 10’ foot main-floor ceiling, a custom ladder built by 1925 Workbench allows easy access to the upper cabinetry, and moves conveniently on a sliding rail.

Most of the main-floor room ceilings have different details and materials, Bech says, a design choice done to add some uniqueness to the light, tranquil colours of the home. The white tray ceilings in each room offer a unique touch, the most unique located in the hallway, which also features in-ceiling lighting. “Small but elegant details,” she says.

Closing the door on a project is always a happy moment for the team. “It makes us happy seeing the smile on the client’s face. Seeing them happy is what makes our job complete and there's no greater sense of accomplishment than knowing we have exceeded our clientsʼ expectations and made their dreams a reality,” Bech says. “We love what we do and if we made our client happy, we’ve done our job and that is rewarding.”

Renovations are a big part of my design work. When I first start working with a client who is thinking about renovating their home, I always want to hear about their “big” picture. What is their perfect dream space? How do they see themselves living in this space? How do they entertain, and with how many people? These are just a few of the many questions I ask.

I also tell them to forget the budget for the moment – that reality can sink in soon enough! In the very early stages, just to dream is most important. And usually, a client’s dream is to open up parts of their home.

David Gimza, president and owner of Glen Abbey Contractors Ltd., says that almost 85% of his clients want some sort of spacial reconstruction. “Clients usually want their kitchen and family room opened up to each other; it is one of the most popular renovations I do,” he says.

If we take a step back in time, many houses of a certain age were often divided into smaller rooms, with each room designated for different needs.

Layouts were usually fairly simple: kitchen, living room, dining room, bedrooms. These homes were usually heated with woodburning fireplaces and stoves, so it made sense that these spaces were defined by walls to keep the heat contained.

In some cases, separate rooms were also a measure of social stature. A dining room in a grander home, for example, was used only for special parties and events and kept apart from the rest of the house. Kitchens remained the hub of the home – no big surprise here! – and families congregated there most evenings.

of people, taking down this wall allows for a better flow. So updating the kitchen and adjacent spaces is a logical first step in any reno.

Many of my clients today want to entertain graciously, and a great island plays a central role in this. Island seating – generally, but not always, bar stools –are often chosen with the same care as dining room chairs. Just as in your other rooms, furniture details and fabric choices contribute to a unified design vibe, whether modern, traditional or transitional.

Defined stations within the kitchen continue to be popular too. We often create separate coffee stations for the resident barista; I predict that with the increased emphasis on healthier eating habits, juice bar stations will eventually become another kitchen staple. In both cases, these should be purposefully positioned to allow family and guests to help themselves.

These days, kitchens and family rooms are often designed together; in many older homes, I’ve found these two rooms are frequently separated by a loadbearing wall, which makes removing the wall a challenge. Even so, as we entertain more in our homes and with larger groups

I always try and incorporate open shelving and/or glass cabinetry to showcase a client’s collection of dishes and collectibles. This is what adds personality to a space and makes it truly a client’s home.

Another equally dramatic and appealing area to open up is the staircase and stairwell area. I have never gone into a consultation where a client does not point out this area, and ask what we can do to refresh it. Whether it’s as simple as painting the pickets, or completely replacing them, opening up the stairwell to the lower level has enormous impact on a main floor, casting light down to the main level and generally imparting an open airy feeling.

Gimza is a huge proponent of updating and opening up stairwells as part of a larger renovation. He has been seeing a steady increase lately in the number of finishing options. “More and more,

clients are creating drama with their staircases, and choose curved drywall, glass panels, and modern metal or wood spindles. These changes can really elevate a space.”

Gimza cautions, however, that even a plain staircase is a complex engineering structure, and always ensures his clients’ design plans have a structural engineer stamp and review them before any changes are made.

Often, older homes have problems with the layout that can only be solved by moving rooms around. This isn’t as daunting as it sounds; it’s actually one of my most popular renovation changes. For example, in the “before” picture shown here, the powder room was in the wrong place. We turned the old closet into a new, more centrally located powder room, and added a built-in closet and bench on the adjacent wall.

Often once walls come down, it means you have to creatively support the changes by adjusting the other rooms in the house. Dining rooms can be swapped out for living rooms; living rooms can become lounges and libraries. A laundry room can co-exist with a pantry. All of this, of course, comes down to good space planning.

It is always exciting to contemplate the dreams a client has during the renovation stage. And it is my job as a designer to work with the client to take those design dreams and make them a reality.

Quartz countertop pioneer and leading solid surface manufacturer Caesarstone brings it all home with an award-winning booth at KBIS 2024, North America’s largest annual kitchen and bath trade show.

Premium solid-surface maker Caesarstone introduced the first quartz countertop over 30 years ago. So you can bet they know a thing or two about kitchen style.

The manufacturer unveiled no fewer than seven new quartz patterns, seven new porcelains and two new textures, collectively named the One of A Kind Collection, at the 60th annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), North America’s largest trade show of its kind, held in Las Vegas in February.

Caesarstone’s stylish 3200-sq.ft. booth, entitled “Beyond The Surface,” took the form of a home, with the underlying theme that porcelain, quartz and natural stone surfaces can be installed not just in the kitchen and bath – although they are a stunning and practical choice there – but all through your house, inside and out.

“Beyond the Surface” is also the name of a major research report that Caesarstone commissioned last year, which goes beyond trends to explore the ways that design is influenced by cultural and social movements. Launched at the show, the report features insights by an advisory panel made up of designers, content creators and lifestyle experts from across North America. Caesarstone’s KBIS exhibit began with an arched front portico designed to represent a welcoming front door, complete with handpainted street address and coachlights. (In fact, arches and rounded edges were a recurring visual motif throughout.) The interior was finished in a tasteful combination of light woods and creamy white and emerald green accents, a perfect setting for the new introductions: almost all feature warm white and cream backgrounds, and finely detailed veining in warm grey, gold and copper tones.

“We feel grey has really had its moment,” said Lori Shapiro, Caesarstone’s PR and corporate communications manager for North America, “so these warmer colours are coming back.”

Though there were a few more high-contrast patterns on view – such as Scoria, featuring dramatic black splotches on a cream background – most were more subtle: the bubbly delicacy of Goldfinch, or Celestial Sky, which Shapiro said reminded her of the Milky Way. New finishes include a silk finish which really does feel like soft fabric, and a rougher, almost cement-like finish, ideal for a more rustic or industrial-chic setting.

The demo kitchen took up both the physical and psychological centre of the booth. It was

used as a stage for cooking demonstrations by Chef Kev D, and featured an oversized island/ prep area topped with a Lucillia porcelain counter (side islands were in Rossa Nova quartz), fronted by stools for the lucky few guests who managed to grab a seat. The wall behind, clad in delicately veined Isobellia porcelain with Solenna quartz counters, featured a built-in BlueStar range and steel-clad range hood, both in vibrant garden green.

The central island surface also featured an Invisacook induction cooktop, which allowed the chef to cook foods right on top of the counter. Invisacook has been a frequent companion product at Caesarstone show exhibits in recent years, and a nifty way to show off the counter’s durability. Just before happy hour each day of the show, Chef Kev D entertained attendees with a mixology demonstration at the bar a few steps over, sharing cocktails invented specifically for the occasion.

The living room featured a pair of graciously curved green sofas, framing a coffee table made of porcelain circles. Sitters warmed themselves by a glass-panelled fireplace under an arched overhang, its hearth clad in smokygrey Ocean Blue natural quartzite stone. The fireplace itself was framed in Locura porcelain, with a backdrop of Libretta porcelain panels on either side. The fireplace was a perfect focal point from which to display the new colours and textures, which fanned out in tablet-shaped panels on either side.

On the other side, the ensuite showcased some new ways to use these materials: a Mirabel porcelain inset “bathmat” between sink and tub, with other styles used as wall cladding. Perhaps the most popular area of the exhibit, apart from the demo kitchen itself, was the outdoor patio, under a pergola in the “backyard” of the booth. (Patio counters here were a specialized product called Midday Outdoor Quartz.) Free food samples were dispensed to passersby from a fully fitted outdoor kitchen, while patio seating offered a spot to enjoy the sound of a water feature made of die-cut porcelain mosaic tiles. The waterfall, according to Shapiro, is designed to show that these surfaces are water-, mildew- and mouldresistant, and completely suitable for use outdoors – even in Canada.

The Caesarstone booth turned out to be one of the most popular exhibits at KBIS, earning an honourable mention in the booth awards at the show’s conclusion. It was a fitting way to demonstrate the company’s message: that the beauty and durability of these products really do go beyond the surface.

Dragons, Paprika & Palaces:

EXTREMADURA’S ECLECTIC CHARM

For fans of Game of Thrones, aka “Thronies,” the Spanish city of Cáceres is a place of pilgrimage. (Cáceres is pronounced “CATH-air-ays.”) This walled city in the northwest of Spain hasn’t changed appreciably since the 12th century. Its combination of Renaissance, Gothic and Roman architecture and its stone fortresses and high battlements make it the perfect stand-in for the role of King’s Landing in the popular television series. The walled city did such a good acting job that the film crew returned to record scenes for the prequel, House of the Dragon.

It’s almost other-worldly to walk these streets that have remained the same for centuries. That’s what I discovered throughout Extremadura – a preservation of Spain’s storied history, with a cheeky overlay of stylish modernity. A visit here is a multi-layered adventure.

Stretching between the mountains and valleys that border Portugal, the area is symbolized by its green meadows filled with the round shapes of holm oak, some of which are hundreds of years old. The acorns from the holm oaks make up most of the diet of the region’s famous Jamón Ibérico. Sliced thinly and glistening with fat, the delicate slices of jamón melt on your tongue.

In Hervás, I stumble upon a group of gentlemen demonstrating the precise skills involved in slicing a leg of Jamón Ibérico. One leg of Pata Negra

jamón, the best quality, costs $1,000 and upwards, so ultra-thin slicing is a prized skill. I’m spoiled as each expert slicer invites me to sample their veilthin slivers of ham. I find jamón in almost every restaurant, along with dishes redolent with smoked paprika, green and fruity olive oils and honeyed churros.

Dining in Extremadura is an adventure that’s both steadfastly traditional and playfully experimental. Atrio Cáceres, an opulent three-Michelinstar restaurant and boutique hotel, has become a culinary destination

in itself. The restaurant gained added notoriety in 2021 when there was a robbery. A couple checked in for dinner and then stole away in the middle of the night with close to $2,500,000 of wine stolen from the restaurant’s renowned wine cellar. One bottle was an 1806 Chateau d’Yquem worth over $500,000. The loss was devastating to the two owners, but the resultant publicity increased the restaurant’s fame. (The wines were never recovered but the couple was caught and imprisoned.)

At Versátil, a modest one-Michelinstar restaurant in a small village, Zarza de Granadilla, the blend of creative presentation and elegant flavours makes lunch a celebration. Chestnut soup is served with a dollop of pigeon mousse, followed by Jamón Ibérico carpaccio topped with a vegetable vinaigrette, micro greens and local honey, ravioli stuffed with seasonal mushrooms with a foie gras sauce and charcoal-roasted Extremadura beef – all presented with cheerful style.

In Vera, I tour a paprika factory, Las Hermanas, female-owned and operated, which produces some of the world’s best smoked paprika. Owner Alicia Lopez follows the traditional methods of production, using hand-picked organic local peppers and oak to smoke the peppers. There is a museum of paprika too, Jaraiz de la Vera Paprika Museum, showing the history and production methods of the “red gold.”

city. If you stay here, have a drink in the night bar in the old monastery wine cellar. Be sure to notice the flying staircase, built in 1557. Also in Plasencia is the 28-room Hotel Palacio Carvajal Girón, a 16th-century restored palace in the old Jewish quarter of the city. In Vera, the castlelike Parador de Jarandilla de la Vera lets you sleep amongst history. This is the palace where King Charles V stayed while awaiting renovations to the Monastery de Yuste.

Ancient history is everywhere. The valleys of Extremadura were once a vital part of the Via de la Plata, the Silver Route, and pilgrims take this southern route to Santiago still today, hiking along rivers and gorges and staying in humble refugios. In a farmer’s field, I explore the ancient ruins of the oncemighty Roman city of Cáparra. Its foursided arch is unique in Spain. The ruins are in the process of being excavated but the sense of history is omnipresent. This was once an important stop on

The balance of old and new is also evident in the local accommodations.

I stayed in the Palacio de Oquendo, an NH Hotel Group property in Cáceres. It’s a restored 16th-century palace that has kept its facade, its stonework and character, but offers completely modern rooms and an excellent café. The paradors of Spain, state-owned hotels usually in historically significant buildings, are some of the most interesting accommodations in Europe, which remains true in Extremadura. In the Parador de Plasencia, originally a 15th-century convent, I sleep in a room that’s large and airy, with stone floors, high windows, and double doors that open up to a terrace with views of the

the Via de la Plata and nearby Granadilla is another. The 9th-century fortified town and castle, once abandoned, is being restored. Its castle suggests childhood fairytales.

In Mérida, the Roman amphitheatre is one of the most important and wellpreserved Roman ruins in Europe, while the National Museum of Roman Art, designed by architect Rafael Moneo, holds an astounding collection of Roman artifacts and art. Walking to lunch in Mérida, I wonder at a restored temple to Diana on a main street of the city, sitting unobtrusively between a grocery shop and a restaurant.

Huddled into the hillside near Vera is the Monastery de Yuste, an ancient walled monastery made famous when King Charles V chose the building as his final refuge after abdicating the throne in 1556.

The ailing king had his bedroom situated above the church altar, with an opening through which he could observe the services. The austere rooms of the King’s apartments and the story of Charles V are fascinating but best of all are the gardens surrounding the monastery, and the arcaded patios. If you visit in early spring, the valley is a white cloud of flowering cherry trees.

A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN AND SAVOUR

THE DELIBERATE PACE OF RURAL SPANISH LIFE

To balance out the old, visit the Helga de Alvear Museum in Cáceres, where the entrance to the art gallery is lined with crushed squares of metal that are the remains of Francisco Franco’s yacht. Inside is an important collection of contemporary art, by both Spanish and international artists, with a monumental installation, Descending Light by Ai Weiwei, in the first gallery.

Extremadura is a place to slow down and savour the deliberate pace of rural Spanish life, where the local character is celebrated and crowds are generally non-existent.

It’s a feast of a place, in every way, elevated by the fact that it is less touristy, less busy and less formal than the big sister Spanish cities of Madrid, Barcelona or Seville.

Come for the allure of dragons, but stay for the jamón, the monasteries, and the bucolic landscape.

Southampton, Ontario is known for its mesmerizingly glorious sunsets, powdery soft sand along Lake Huron, and an idyllic beach vacation destination – and now, an intimate boutique place called The Beach Motel.

Husband-and-wife owners Dane and Samantha Buttenaar have travelled the world, experiencing a variety of accommodations, from hostels to luxury overwater villas. Their favourites were always the small boutique properties, no matter if they were in Thailand or Madagascar. They had always wanted to run a motel of their own in which they could combine their favourite aspects of their travels.

The motel, which opened in March 2022, offers a personal, guest-focused

experience that the couple felt was needed in Southampton, and they were determined to be the ones to offer such an experience.

When an opportunity to buy a rundown property in their hometown arose – and the price was finally right after staying on the market – they knew they could turn this vacancy into a cozy getaway that’s just steps away from the beach.

Arriving at The Beach Motel, you’ll pull into the courtyard and in classic motor inn style, you’ll have an immediate view of the rooms and access to the reception area. "We wanted to create that cozy feel, That’s why all of the rooms face into the courtyard and then we have the secondfloor deck, which in the summer, creates more of a family vibe,” explains Dane.

There are 17 suites to choose from to create your memorable beach town getaway. Choose from single- and double-queen suites, single king suites, a beautiful corner king suite and a spacious two-bedroom single queen suite with a kitchenette and living area. Stepping through the door of your temporary holiday home, you’ll find thoughtful touches and luxe amenities such as European-plush Sealy mattresses, Manchester Mills 300-count sateen weave linens, Monarch Cypress Green Earth Eco towels, and more. A Nespresso coffee machine is at the ready when you wake up each morning.

Room details are equally as thought out, with fine room finishings such as custom wallpaper displaying sights of Southampton in the imagery in select suites, soft cork flooring throughout, shiplap walls and comfortable, relaxing furnishings. A convenient desk allows for getting a bit of work done, or to journal about your day.

Additional carefully planned details include the stone concierge desk, which was templated from a painting of Lake Huron. The metal portion of the design is to resemble Southampton’s sandy shores.

Larger groups of travellers will want to book The Beach House. Inside there are two units, one upper level with a full backyard and one lower level with access to the front yard. The three-bedroom units offer one queen bed per room, a full kitchen, a dining room, a living room and a full bathroom with a tub and shower. Perhaps you’ll want to challenge the other guests in the common area with an energetic game of ping-pong.

Part of any great getaway is a spa experience. The Beach Motel’s Wellness Spahhh on the second floor has two treatment rooms designed to relax you deep into vacay mode.

Upstairs in this two-level motel are the indoor lounge and outdoor deck,

which are also accessible by a separate staircase. The rooftop patio is a favourite of Dane and Samantha. They encourage everyone to enjoy its comfortable seating around the fireplace or a seat at the bar top tables to relax with a beverage and healthy nibbles.

Helmed by Chef Carey McLellan, the menu offers an intimate serving of locally sourced ingredients with a healthy farmto-table approach. McLellan’s dedication also includes personally driving to various farms within a 30-40 km radius for the ingredients she needs regularly. “We were fortunate to have Chef Carey fall into our lap,” says Dane. “We wanted everything to align with the motel and with as small a footprint as we can for waste. That was important to us.”

The lounge offers guests a complimentary continental breakfast daily and a wellthought-out menu offering fresh dishes made with local ingredients. “Our chef is very talented so we get a good draw

from the popularity of her food,” Dane says. There are also board games and a turntable with a selection of vinyl records to get a playful vibe going.

Realizing and building a dream destination in their hometown, Dane says that he hopes The Beach Motel continues to be a pillar business for the town and hopes that it’s “seen for years to come as the gold standard for accommodations in Southampton.”

Add all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, add ice, and shake it until chilled. Strain over a large ice cube. Garnish with baby's breath flowers.

Put the raspberries and blackberries in a highball glass spiral-rimmed with cherry blossom dust and nicely muddle, then add peach purée and lime juice. Mix together and fill the glass with ice cubes, and then top up the drink with 7UP. Give a gentle stir and garnish with three mixed berries on a cocktail stick and mint leaves.

1 ½ oz non-alcoholic gin (Isabelle uses Lumette!)

½ oz honey syrup

1 oz ginger thyme syrup

1 oz lemon juice

1 fresh lime wheel to garnish

DIRECTIONS

Prepare the honey syrup by cutting honey with equal parts hot water to thin it out. Prepare the ginger thyme syrup by simmering fresh ginger and thyme with sugar in boiling water. Combine ingredients into a shaker and shake over ice. Strain into a Nick and Nora glass and garnish with a fresh lime wheel. Enjoy!

If you’re a chef or restaurant owner in Canada you know who Rob Nella is. He’s the owner of Nella Cutlery, which has been providing restaurants from coast to coast with everything you need to open and maintain a restaurant. This year marks 75 years since the first knife was sharpened in a small town in Italy called Pinzolo.

I was 22 years old when I first met Rob. I was about to open a new restaurant and I needed guidance on kitchen design. Since then he has played an integral part in every restaurant that I have opened. The process of opening a restaurant is multi-layered and can be overwhelming. Staff always come first. Rob knows this so he designs kitchens to maximize flow, performance and the overall staff experience. The culinary program and intention of the restaurant are critical pieces of the puzzle. It’s not a transactional process. There’s no hard sell or pressure. He realizes that many competitors are selling the same products as he is. But what gives him the cutting edge is his ability to connect with people in a very organic and honest manner.

you too can become very successful and wealthy. None of those lessons apply to Rob Nella’s trajectory. His success is built on consistency, cultivating great partnerships, leading by example and a work ethic that he witnessed firsthand from his mentors, his grandfather and father. These are the pillars of his business. That’s how Rob built one of the most successful companies in Canada.

Rob’s succession plan for Nella is a simple and clear path. Keep mentoring the next generation, and find compelling ways to continue to give back to his community.

To understand what has made Nella thrive for three-quarters of a century you need to go back to that small town in Italy where it all started with Rob’s grandfather. After returning from the Second World War he needed to start the next chapter of his life. The idea to start a knife sharpening company germinated in a small town in Italy called Pinzolo. This town is still known for knife sharpening and became the catalyst that inspired Grandfather Antonio to learn the craft and start his own business.

The early days shaped the company that we all see today. As a young boy, Rob learned the importance of paying close attention to the details, consistency and that no job was below him – advice that

he instills in his daughter and three sons that are at the beginning of their journey into the family business. When I asked Rob to describe his grandfather, his answer was swift. “He was a legend, a real man, a gem, always disciplined.”

Rob’s philosophy is “stewardship,” never trying to leverage the past or rest on someone else’s success. Always protect the business and it will protect you and the team. The first generation creates wealth, the second generation grows it, and the third generation loses it. These are words that are a constant in Rob’s life.

Rob’s succession plan for Nella is a simple and clear path. Keep mentoring the next generation, and find compelling ways to continue to give back to his community. One thing is for certain, there’s no retirement plan on the horizon. When I asked Rob about what his driving force is, he quickly responded with one word. FAMILY.

I suspect that one day if his children are posed the same question, they will arrive at the same answer: “My dad is a legend, a real man, a gem.”

The event will have traditional dancing competitions, drummers and singers. They are turning the creation story of Sky Woman and Turtle Island into large balloons,” he explains.

But no need to fly to New York to see his work. He thinks it will eventually turn into a world tour.

Closer to home, his art is on display at a few Steeltown galleries, including Beckett Fine Art and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. He’s also snagged commissions from several corporate and non-profit organizations.

Anyone travelling through Hamilton may have already seen his street art. The 31-year-old Indigenous artist’s colourful creations are hard to miss. “I want to create more inclusive spaces – places where the urban Indigenous community can see their heritage reflected at them as opposed to living in an environment that is very stifling to traditional Indigenous ways,” he says.

Joedicke describes his work as Woodland, in the style of Norval Morrisseau. Woodland Art, also known as Legend Painting or Medicine Painting, is a distinct style of Native art that blends traditional legends and myths with contemporary mediums. It explores the relationships

between people, animals, and plants and is rich with spiritual imagery and symbolism. One of his murals on Concession Street in Hamilton depicts the teachings of the seven grandfathers (buffalo = respect, bald eagle = love, bear = courage, Sasquatch = honesty, wolf = humility, beaver = wisdom and turtle = truth).

The Halton Catholic District School Board hired Joedicke to create seven original paintings of these Seven Sacred Teachings for one of its schools.

Another mural can be spotted outside St. Matthew’s House on Barton Street, which is a memorial for the unmarked graves of Indigenous children found at former residential school sites. “The biggest takeaway that I’d like a new viewer of my art to have is that I’m trying to bring a much better sense of representation to Hamilton and Ontario in general, for the Indigenous community,” he says. “For a long time, in terms of the history of Indigenous art, it’s kind of been seen as not necessarily fine art to be put in galleries, but almost more of a touristy kind of knick-knack. Like there’s been no real level of professionalism attached to it.”

His dad is from Six Nations outside of Hamilton, and his mom is a Scottish descendant from Caledonia. Despite his mixed heritage, Joedicke identifies himself as Cayuga Turtle Clan from Six Nations of The Grand River reserve.

As a young teenager, he didn’t always declare his Indigenous roots. Often, he would pass for white.

It was safer that way at school, especially during tensions between Six Nations people occupying the Douglas Creek Estates (DCE) subdivision. This was a time in Canadian history marked by police raids and clashes between Six Nations people and Caledonians.

When presenting art workshops to students, Joedicke doesn’t shy away from his personal story. “A lot of the time growing up in Caledonia, I felt too native for the white community and too white for the native community. “I know a lot of people growing up and going to school in Caledonia that had to deal with blatant racism, especially at the time when the Douglas Creek Estates land complications were at a peak. There was a lot of tension in the city, and it was at that time, easier for me to not necessarily hide but not put a spotlight on the fact that I had an Indigenous background. I was in my late twenties before I started to realize that it was okay to express my identity,” Joedicke says.

When visiting with grade 7 to university-age students, Joedicke says, he enjoys “creating real connections with people who truly may have never met an actual Indigenous person in their life. At the end of an hour-long discussion to have a student come up to you and tell you that you genuinely taught them something about your culture is... that’s a feeling that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.”

Joedicke, who previously worked as a landscaper and general labourer, still can’t believe this is his life.

He began focusing on his artwork about three years ago after he was laid off during pandemic lockdowns. “People see the art world as a very exclusive place where you don’t know how to get into it and for me, I’m a self-taught artist. So, this has all been trial by fire,” he says.

OAKVILLE’S TRUTH Debwewin:

“What better place to begin to seek the Truth than your own local community.”

As rich as Oakville’s history is, the lack of knowledge and understanding of its Indigenous roots has been a harsh truth, which is now being uncovered thanks to Debwewin: The Oakville Truth Project.

Debwewin is a partnership between the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) to further a shared understanding of Oakville’s Indigenous past and support local Truth & Reconciliation.

Debwewin raises questions about Oakville’s Truth such as: “What happened to the local Treaty holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation?” and “Why did Treaty 22, which includes coverage of Oakville main waterways, Sixteen Mile and Bronte Creek, leave the Mississaugas homeless?”

MCFN have long historical roots in Oakville. Understanding the local history of the Indigenous people in Oakville from an Anishinabek perspective is an important first step on the path toward Truth and Reconciliation. “Debwewin” refers to one of the Anishinabek seven grandfathers' teachings for “truth.”

Debwewin is inspired and guided by MCFN Elder Peter Schuler, along with membership from leading academics, historians, legal claims experts, Indigenous knowledge keepers and guides. The Project is supported by Ogiima Kwe (Chief) Claire Sault and the MCFN Council.

Georgia LaForme, Communications and Engagement Lead of MCFN, cites a quote from Elder Peter that she feels describes the project best. “‘Working at MCFN, we are getting all kinds of requests from municipalities, organizations across our Treaty Lands, which is 3.9 million acres, and there’s just so much work to be done ― and also from individuals who want to know what they can do to support us, what they can do to promote reconciliation. You should always start with learning about what Treaty you live on.”

Just how important are the Treaties? “It was how Canada was formed ― Treaties of allyship. We need to reimagine our allyship and support our indigenous friends,” says OCF CEO Wendy Rinella.

As a first step, the Debwewin team set out to determine the boundaries of the two treaties that cover Oakville: Treaty 14 and Treaty 22. “With the help of land surveyors, an interactive map was built on the Debwewin website that allows visitors to determine the Treaty land in which they live,” says Rinella. “Once the boundaries were established, highly visible and colourful Treaty signs were placed throughout the Town at various landmarks, each equipped with a QR code for more information.” The signs, designed by The Jensen Group, are available for purchase online for your home or office.

Additionally, Moccasin Trail Walks at Lion’s Valley and Bronte Creek offer signage and snappable QR codes. New this year is a new multi-panelled museum display, which will be available to borrow for organizational events.

A report called Friendship, Peace and Respect for All Future Generations: Oakville-based treaty relations between the Crown and the Mississaugas, was produced in February 2023 to remedy the knowledge gap of Oakville’s treaties and Indigenous history. “It explored the treaties in how they were meant to be received: as an ongoing relationship

between allies. The report goes into detail of Treaty 22 and the truth of how the Mississaugas became landless, and that the Mississaugas never surrendered their land, but it was instead given in trust to the Crown as they went to great lengths to protect both the land and waters in their traditional territory,” LaForme says.

Rinella recommends signing the Acts of Allyship online to continue learning and discovering these truths and to promote reconciliation. Allyship, as defined in the OCF’s Reconciliation, Equity and Anti-Racism Statement is “An ongoing process of learning where a member of a different group works to end a form of discrimination for a particular individual or designated group. Allies must also have some degree of power to effect change.”

Everybody has to find their path, Rinella says. “If you are an artist, how you express yourself through art may be to develop partnerships with Indigenous people; if you run a business, what are you doing to include Indigenous suppliers or products and services, or employees? We all have a role to play. We’re supposed to both mutually benefit from the land. They’re treaties based on allyship and that idea of mutual benefit is reciprocity.”

LaForme has been impressed with the work of the OCF to help move the project forward, as well as the receptiveness of the Town of Oakville. “I think the project is just getting started but we’ve already come a long way in terms of the work around awareness and it’s been very meaningful work for me,” she says.
