From contemporary waterfront retreats to architecturally significant custom residences, glass has become a defining element of residential design. Expansive openings frame lake views, draw natural light deep into living spaces, and create a stronger connection to the landscape beyond. At the forefront of that evolution is Faust Windows. Working alongside architects, builders, and homeowners, the company has built a reputation for tackling complex glazing challenges, from oversized openings and jumbo glass installations to sophisticated systems designed for Canada's demanding climate. We sat down with the owner of FAUST, Ali Rockliffe, to discuss the changing role of glass in residential architecture, the evolution of the modern boathouse, and the ideas shaping today's most compelling homes.

TELL US ABOUT THE BEGINNINGS OF FAUST WINDOWS AND THE VISION BEHIND THE COMPANY. Faust Windows began with a simple objective: to expand what was possible in residential glazing. Early in my career, I noticed a growing disconnect between modern architectural design and the limitations of traditional North American window systems. Homes were becoming more open, more minimalist, and increasingly focused on natural light, yet many available products weren't designed to support this architectural scale. What stood out to me was how European systems had already embraced larger spans, full aluminium construction, and advanced engineering. It became clear that this was where luxury residential design was heading. As homeowners, architects, and builders began asking for larger expanses of glass, slimmer sightlines, and more seamless indoor-outdoor living, aluminium systems emerged as the natural solution. They offer the strength and stability required for today's ambitious designs while maintaining clean architectural lines.

Over time, our role has evolved beyond simply supplying windows and doors. We work closely with architects and builders to help bring complex design visions to life, and that collaborative approach continues to drive our growth. MANY OF TODAY'S HOMES ARE DESIGNED AROUND NATURAL LIGHT AND INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING. HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS ACHIEVE THOSE GOALS? Everything begins with understanding how the homeowner wants to experience the space. Natural light and seamless transitions aren't simply visual features. They influence how a home feels every day, from comfort and mood to the way families gather and entertain. From there, we focus on three key areas. The first is scale. Large-format glazing, slim profiles, and expansive openings help remove visual barriers and strengthen the connection to the surrounding environment. The second is engineering. Every project must perform as beautifully as it looks. Structural requirements, climate conditions, and energy efficiency all need to be considered from the beginning. The third is integration. We collaborate closely with architects, builders, and designers so the glazing feels like an intentional part of the architecture rather than an element added later.

Our focus is finding solutions that satisfy both the aesthetic vision and the technical requirements of the project. WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE SHAPING RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE TODAY? Several trends continue to gain momentum. Ultra-slim sightlines remain a priority because they maximize glass and minimize visual interruption. We're also seeing more monumental openings, often spanning 20 to 30 feet or more, creating dramatic

transitions between interior and exterior spaces. Larger single-pane glass installations are becoming increasingly common as architects strive for uninterrupted views. Dark architectural finishes, particularly black, bronze, and custom metallic tones, remain popular for their ability to complement both modern and traditional homes.

Large-format glazing, jumbo glass panels, oversized openings, and complex architectural details require precise engineering and flawless execution. These are often projects with very little margin for error.

here are few places where a home is shaped so completely by its surroundings as it is in Muskoka. Here, granite shorelines, towering pines, and open water have long dictated how cottages are designed, built, and experienced. The most memorable properties are not those that stand apart from the landscape, but those that feel inseparable from it.

Set along the shores of Lake Joseph, one of Muskoka's most iconic lakes, a newly completed family compound embraces that philosophy at every turn. Comprising a custom cottage, boathouse, detached garage, and sports pavilion overlooking the court below, the project is the result of a close collaboration between custom builder HummingbirdHill Homes, architectural designer Alex Foreshew of Foreshew Design Associates, and the team at Olly & Em Design Studio.

Together, they have created a retreat that feels grounded in its surroundings and built for the way families gather, relax, and experience Muskoka. From the water, the compound gradually reveals itself. Rather than presenting a single dramatic statement, the architecture unfolds between the trees and along the shoreline. Rooflines follow the natural topography, while wood, stone, and carefully selected finishes draw inspiration from the colours and textures of the Canadian Shield. The approach is intentional. Every decision was guided by a desire to create buildings that belong to the site rather than simply occupy it. Foreshew's design reflects a deep understanding of Muskoka architecture. While contemporary in its execution, the home avoids trends that may feel dated in a decade. Instead, the focus remains on proportion, materiality, and a lasting connection to the landscape. Expansive glazing frames views across Lake Joseph while maintaining a strong relationship with the surrounding forest. Generous overhangs provide shelter from the elements while adding depth and character to the architecture.

Arrival is carefully considered throughout the property. Views unfold gradually, framed by trees, stone, and changing elevations, creating a sense of discovery as visitors move toward the water. The transition from forest to cottage, cottage to terrace, and terrace to shoreline feels natural and unforced.

The result feels substantial without being imposing. The quality of the workmanship reveals itself in quieter ways: the alignment of materials, the precision of the millwork, the seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the durability required to withstand Muskoka's changing climate.

History lives within the walls that encircle 400-year-old Québec City. Stone houses with bell-cast metal roofs and deep-set dormer windows line narrow cobblestone streets of the Petit-Champlain district and Place Royale square in VieuxQuébec’s Lower Town, where Samuel de Champlain founded the first permanent settlement in New France in 1608. The castle-like Fairmont Le Château Frontenac overlooks the scene from Dufferin Terrance above. Petit-Champlain is known as the prettiest street in Québec’s capital city, a pedestrianonly cobblestone shopping route that inspires fairytale daydreams. Vieux-Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that seems to be more northern France than Canada. And Canadians may like the idea of a taste of Europe without a passport appealing this summer. The historic city has many hidden surprises. Walk through one of the city gates to Montmorency Park where a pair of iron lampposts are entwined in a dancing embrace in artist Alex Chinneck’s “First kiss at last light.” It’s one of the city’s numerous EXMURO public art pieces. Often missed by visitors, fanciful Rue Sousle-Cap also deserves a place on the mostbeautiful-streets list. The buildings on one side of the narrow street snug up against the vertical Cap Diamant cliff. Brightly painted wooden walkways link the upper floors of apartments over the curved road. GET YOUR STEPS IN Even if you can’t recall much of your high school French, escalier (stairs) soon becomes a familiar signpost. Climb a few flights from Rue Sous-le-Cap to the top of Rue des Remparts to visit Le Monastère des Augustines. Founded by Augustinian nuns who arrived from France in 1639 to care for the sick in the New World outpost, it serves a similar, secular purpose today. Since 2015 it’s been a restorative retreat. A NEW GENERATION OF CHEESEMAKERS Madeline Dufour’s family started Famille Migneron de Charlevoix in 1994 as one of Québec’s first artisanal cheesemakers. Today, Madeline, 31, and her brother Alexandre, 35, run the business, including the cheese dairy and winery. Drop by the farm for a tasting or stay for dinner. BUSY BEES After lunch at Le Saint-Pub and brewery in Baie-Saint-Paul, check out the shops and galleries along picturesque SaintJean-Baptiste Street. Drop in at the tasting room at honey wines and spirits maker Hydromel Charlevoix. The shop also sells honey laced with saffron grown a half hour away at Safran Nordique in Clermont, which has a tasting room and gift shop. SCHOONERS & SKYWATCHING Learn some local history at the Musée maritime de Charlevoix in the village of Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, about how mariners once spent long winters handbuilding wooden schooners used to ship goods around St. Lawrence River communities. The steep drive down to the museum begins at Les Éboulements where the landscape dramatically shows this municipality was the centre of the Astroblème de Charlevoix, the Charlevoix impact crater created 450 million years ago by the massive meteorite strike. Long before weekend traffic reports, luxury boathouses, and generations of dockside photographs, families from Southern Ontario made the journey north seeking something far simpler: time together, fresh air, and a relationship with nature that seemed worlds away from everyday life.

“Growing up, I never thought of Muskoka as simply a cottage destination,” says Flye. “It was where our family came together. It was where stories were shared, where friendships were formed, and where every generation seemed to develop their own relationship with the lake.”

For Alex Flye, owner of Kerr Street Café, that tradition stretches back nearly a century.

Those experiences are familiar to many families throughout our region. Many of the people who helped shape the business, philanthropic, and cultural landscape of Oakville, Burlington, and beyond have longstanding ties to Muskoka. For some, those connections date back generations.

Her family's connection to Muskoka began with her great-grandparents, Herald (Harry) and Gladys Greening, who spent time on Lake Joseph before purchasing Sappho Island on Lake Muskoka in the 1940s. What started as a seasonal retreat would become a place where generations gathered, traditions took root, and stories were passed from one family member to the next. bestsidemagazine.com

The names may be familiar. Families connected to businesses such as Shelley-Braden Alexanian from Alexanians Carpet share family roots and a common history that extends beyond the communities they serve. Through family

ties, friendships, and generations spent on the lakes, Muskoka has remained a gathering place where relationships deepen, and traditions endure. For Flye, one of the most fascinating stories from her family's history centres around her great-grandfather, Herald (Harry) Greening, and his nephew, Will (Bill) Braden. At a time when boating technology was advancing rapidly, the two men shared a fascination with speed, engineering, and innovation. The Braden family has always shared a need for speed and an unwavering drive to push boundaries, innovate, and discover ways to make things go faster. Those qualities feel strikingly familiar today.

“My great-grandfather and Will were naturally curious people," Flye explains. "They loved to experiment, to build, and to explore new ideas. They weren't interested in standing still. They were always looking ahead to what might be possible.”

The same characteristics that inspired early innovators on the lake, curiosity, determination, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking, continue to define many of the families and business leaders throughout our communities.

Long before the hydroplane era captured public attention, Greening had already become known for a series of raceboats called Rainbow. Built in Muskoka, the boats reflected the craftsmanship, ingenuity, and competitive spirit that helped establish the region as an important centre for recreational and racing boating. That spirit of innovation would eventually connect the family to one of the most intriguing chapters in Canadian boating history. During the early and mid-twentieth century, hydroplane racing captured the imagination of boaters across North America. Engineers, builders, and racing enthusiasts continually pushed the limits of design and performance, transforming recreational waterways into proving grounds for new ideas. Muskoka's lakes became part of that story. The region offered the perfect environment for experimentation, competition, and testing. For those involved, the lakes were more than scenic backdrops. They were places where imagination met opportunity. While Harry Greening's Rainbow boats belonged to an earlier chapter of Muskoka racing history, the family's 88 | July • August 2026

fascination with speed and innovation extended into the decades that followed. Unlike the locally built Muskoka raceboats that preceded them, hydroplanes were highly specialized racing machines, many influenced by designs emerging from California and other North American racing centres. Among the most celebrated boats in Canadian powerboat racing is Ariel V, an enduring symbol of a remarkable period of experimentation and achievement on the water. Yet for Flye, the story's significance extends well beyond the boat itself. “What interests me most isn't simply the machine,” she says. “It's the people behind it, their willingness to take risks, and the mindset that drove them to create something new.”

Today, many of these remarkable vessels can still be seen and appreciated. Ariel V is preserved at the Canadian Raceboat Hall of Fame, located outside Muskoka, which is dedicated to preserving Canada's rich powerboat racing heritage. The collection features raceboats from the 1940s and 1950s, including many with Muskoka connections, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience this fascinating chapter of Canadian innovation firsthand. Depending on the exhibition, visitors may even encounter one of the historic Rainbow boats associated with Harry Greening's era.

That has been true for generations.” While much has changed over the decades, the heart of the region remains remarkably intact. The lakes continue to draw families north each summer. Children learn to swim from the same docks where their parents and grandparents once learned. Old photographs give way to new ones, while traditions continue to evolve with each generation. As development pressures increase and the character of cottage country continues evolving, understanding the past offers valuable perspective on the future. Muskoka's continuing appeal has always been grounded in its natural beauty, its sense of community, and its power to bring people together across generations. Those qualities remain as important today as they were when families like the Greenings first arrived on its shores. “If we lose the stories, we lose part of what makes these places meaningful,” says Flye. “Knowing the past helps us appreciate why Muskoka continues to hold such an important place in the lives of so many families.”

Today, the hydroplanes have largely disappeared. The racing era has become history. New generations have inherited cottages, traditions, and memories that continue shaping their connection to the region. Yet the feeling remains remarkably familiar. Families still gather around dinner tables overlooking the water. Children still spend long summer days exploring shorelines and islands. Friends still reconnect after months apart. The lake continues to serve as a backdrop for some of life's most meaningful moments. Perhaps that is the true legacy of Muskoka. Not simply the boats, the cottages, or even the history itself, but the enduring connection between people and place. For Alex Flye, it is a connection that began generations ago with Herald and Gladys Greening on Sappho Island and continues today through family, friendship, and a shared appreciation for one of Canada's most treasured landscapes. While summer entertaining is often synonymous with casual, impromptu barbecues, the most memorable evenings are usually born from intention. Not elaborate preparation, but thoughtful details that transform an ordinary twilight into an experience your guests will talk about long after the season fades. When hosting during these golden months, I find myself drawing inspiration from the classic traditions of Southern hospitality. It’s a philosophy that has nothing to do with perfection or pretense, and everything to do with making people feel instantly comfortable and deeply cared for. The best hosts appreciate that true generosity lives in the subtleties: a drink waiting for you the moment you step through the gate, and a table that feels prepared just for the occasion.

SETTING THE SCENE

For this evening’s layout, I wanted a foundation that felt both grounded and elevated. A classic black iron outdoor table offered the perfect weight, while vibrant linen placemats and napkins introduced a playful, sun-drenched palette.

From there, I turned to the ultimate seasonal luxury: the garden. We often look to the local market for culinary inspiration, but some of the most striking design elements are already blooming just outside our doors. Clipped loosely and arranged in simple stoneware vessels, a mix of garden blooms, flowering herbs, and leafy branches brought an organic texture and a true sense of place to the table, something storebought florals can never quite replicate. Whether you are cutting roses, hydrangeas, or wild greenery, including the garden creates an instant, authentic connection to the landscape.

The ideal summer menu should celebrate the season’s peak flavours while keeping the host exactly where they belong: with their guests. To welcome guests, a batch cocktail is the ultimate hosting shortcut. This Peach Whisky punch, bright with peach nectar, fresh citrus, and the spicy kick of ginger beer, features locally crafted Barnburner Whisky. Mixing it in a pitcher ahead of time allows guests to top themselves up, ensuring you stay anchored in the conversation rather than playing bartender all night. (For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the whisky for an equally refreshing mocktail).

Grill over medium-high heat for 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the edges are beautifully charred and curled. While the corn grills, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, swirling until it turns a deep golden brown and smells nutty. Stir in the lime zest. Arrange the hot corn ribs on a platter, drizzle generously with the brown butter, and finish with fresh lime juice, cilantro, and a final pinch of flaky sea salt.

When sliced lengthwise and grilled, the corn curls into rib-like shapes that feel wonderfully novel yet entirely approachable. Drizzled with brown butter, fresh lime zest & juice, and a shower of cilantro, they hit every note of sweetness, smoke, and salt.

Alongside the corn, Grilled Shrimp Skewers deliver a sophisticated nod to classic barbecue fare. The smoky, charred shrimp pair beautifully with a glossy Blackberry Gastrique, a simple reduction of fresh summer berries, red wine vinegar, and sugar that cuts through the rich char. Garnish the platter with torn basil or microgreens and extra berries to resemble the garden-inspired surroundings. Ultimately, the greatest lesson Southern hospitality teaches us is that elegance should

look effortless. Tucking flowers into vases that morning, setting the table ahead of schedule, and having the platters ready to go allows the evening to unfold like a conversation. As the sun dips below the tree line, a few flickering candles are all it takes to shift the mood. This season, invite people to stay awhile. Di Mario’s embraces the warmth and intimacy of a neighbourhood trattoria, while Via Allegro has earned its reputation as one of the GTA’s premier dining destinations, celebrated for its exceptional cellar and elevated service. What connects them is a shared commitment to authenticity, hospitality, and the expertise of Lead Sommelier and Wine Director Wendy Votto, who has spent nearly three decades helping guests navigate the world of wine. “Whether a guest is looking for something approachable at Di Mario’s or a rare gem at Via Allegro, the standard of care and dedication to hospitality is equal,” says Votto.

Celebrated Canadian painter Leif Ostlund reflects on creativity, colour, and a lifetime spent seeing the world differently. By Ken Dixon

or acclaimed Canadian artist Leif Ostlund, painting has always been about more than technique. It is about transformation. It is about creating something from nothing. Most of all, it is about capturing beauty in a way that resonates long after the brush has left the canvas. Born in Prince George, British Columbia, Ostlund's artistic journey has taken him across the country and onto the walls of private and corporate collections throughout Canada, Britain, Europe, South Africa, and Japan. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design with honours and scholarships, he has spent decades refining a distinctive style that celebrates light, colour, atmosphere, and the simple pleasures of life. Yet for Ostlund, the fascination began long before art school. “Even as a kid I thought flying like a bird was something that would be magic,” he recalls. “So it was a natural step for me to pick up a paintbrush. Painting is magic.”

He describes fine art painting as a form of alchemy, transforming raw pigments, oils, and minerals into something capable of moving people emotionally. That perspective continues to guide his work today. “When you view painting not just as a technical skill or a career, but as a form of magic, it changes your entire relationship with the canvas.” Interestingly, Ostlund did not immediately pursue painting as a profession. Before committing fully to art, he trained as a chef and spent five years working in commercial kitchens. Practicality informed his thinking at the time. “My philosophy was at least I could cook and wouldn't starve,” he says with a laugh. “Still, the future had other plans.” Eventually, the chef's hat was set aside, and the paintbrush became a lifelong companion. His years at OCAD helped sharpen both his technical abilities and professional discipline. Entering art school at age 28, Ostlund found himself approaching his studies with a maturity and focus that set him apart.

“I worried less about my appearance and more about the work,” he says. “I was always there early for life drawing to get a good spot in front of the model.” The rigorous critique process challenged him to think critically about his work while exploring a wide range of media and techniques. Graduating with honours and earning scholarships provided early validation of both his artistic skill and future potential. Over time, Ostlund's approach has evolved, not through adding complexity but through removing it. “When we start out, we often think magic means complexity,” he explains. “But as my vision matures, I realize that the ultimate magic trick is distillation.” Today, that philosophy can be seen throughout his work, where confident brushwork, expressive colour, and carefully considered composition create paintings that feel both timeless and deeply personal. For the collectors who live with his paintings, Ostlund hopes the experience extends far beyond aesthetics. “The world outside can be incredibly loud, chaotic, and demanding,” he says. “I hope that when someone walks into the room where my painting hangs, it acts as a visual anchor, a place where their eyes can rest and their nervous system can reset.” Rather than offering definitive answers, he prefers that his work invite discovery. details, hidden textures, and subtle colour relationships reveal themselves over time, encouraging a lasting dialogue between artwork and viewer. That fascination with beauty continues to fuel his creativity. Whether painting landscapes, koi ponds, roosters, or wildlife, Ostlund views the subject matter as secondary to the emotional experience it creates. “The true subject isn't the object itself,” he says. “It's the way light, colour, and emotion interact with it.” Colour, in particular, remains central to his practice.

“It is the fastest route to the human nervous system,” he explains. “Beautiful colour has this wild ability to completely hijack your brain, hit the pause button on all your mental chatter, and force you to just exist in that exact second.” Supporting that creative freedom is his partnership with Crescent Hill Gallery in Mississauga. As one of Ontario's leading galleries, Crescent Hill allows Ostlund to focus his energy where it belongs: in the studio. “While I am in the studio turning my inspirations and experiences into physical paint, they are out on the gallery floor articulating my vision to collectors,” he says. “It allows the work to remain pure.” Now back in Toronto after years in British Columbia, Ostlund finds himself energized by a new chapter. His downtown loft studio, fresh surroundings, and renewed sense of possibility continue to inspire future projects. “My next adventure in paint carries all the beautiful momentum of everything I have experienced so far,” he says. For an artist who still views painting as a form of flight, the journey remains as exciting as ever. “That spark of anticipation just before I get to the easel,” he reflects, “It's one of the best things about being an artist.”

n a time when headlines are often dominated by urgency and division, stories of generosity offer a welcome reminder of what community can achieve. This winter, Oakville witnessed one such moment when local philanthropist Klaus Bytzek made a landmark $10 million donation to the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton (HSOMH), the largest gift in the organization's history.

More than a financial contribution, the donation reflects a deep commitment to compassion, community, and the enduring bond between people and animals. For HSOMH, the timing is significant. The organization, which has served the region since 1936, is planning a new animal care centre to meet the needs of a growing population.
