anadian icon Lawrence Gowan sat down with me to reflect on four decades of music, the magic of Massey Hall, the evolution of performance, and the unexpected path that led him to front one of the world’s most enduring rock bands.

Few artists embody longevity the way Gowan does.

From his electrifying rise as a solo performer in the ’80s to nearly three decades as the frontman for Styx, his career is held together by what he calls a “platinum thread.” It’s a lifelong devotion to connecting with people through music. “I just absolutely love it,” he tells me. “I'm useless at pretty well everything else.”

That combination of humility, humour, and theatrical charm is pure Gowan: quick-witted and endlessly passionate about the craft that has carried him from Toronto clubs to some of the biggest stages in the world. This past year alone, Styx played 100 shows, and he performed his 25th solo show at his beloved Massey Hall, a place he calls his “ground zero.” Selling it out for the second time in two years felt like a homecoming. bestsidemagazine.com

Massey Hall has been woven through his story from early on. His first shows were in 1987, two nights he remembers almost down to the date. He returned for Ronnie Hawkins’ 60th birthday celebration in 1995, sharing the stage with legends such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Jeff Healey. (“Jeff stole the show,” he adds, as though he’s still watching it.) He later returned with Styx in the early 2000s and most recently as the headliner of a soldout solo show.

Each visit feels more meaningful. “In the early days, you wonder how long you can stretch this out. A five-year career was respectable, like an NHL player. But to be here this long, still delivering at a high level, it deepens the whole experience.”

Longevity, he believes, comes from something more enduring than radio hits.

Over time, listeners have formed new relationships with his music and with the Styx catalogue, discovering songs beyond the singles. He lights up describing nineyear-olds belting out Strange Animal at his shows. “They’ve unearthed the songs themselves. Not the hits they hear every day. Their songs.”

Animal, when he performed the album in full. Fans embraced every track so enthusiastically that he expects to repeat the experience. Styx is embracing fullalbum performances as well, with The Grand Illusion this year and Pieces of Eight next year. Gowan says it proves that the deep cuts often cut the deepest.

Rock’s resilience fascinates him. “We’re pleasantly surprised that rock music is still very much alive, seventy years after its invention,” he says, effortlessly shifting into music-historian mode. Just as jazz defined the first half of the 20th century, he believes rock defined the second, and its influence continues to ripple across generations.

night unfolded like fate. By the final chorus of A Criminal Mind, Styx members were waiting side-stage. Tommy Shaw shook his hand. “We gotta do more of this.”

A year later, while working in the UK, Gowan kept hearing the same prediction from industry insiders: you’re going to join an established band. He laughed it off. He was a solo artist. That was his identity.

Then the call came from J.Y. Young and Tommy Shaw. They didn’t want him as an opener. They wanted him in the band. “It felt like the universe tapping me on the shoulder. I just thought, this is for you.”

Twenty-seven years later, he still sees that moment as the turning point.

Today, Gowan stands at a rare intersection: a Canadian icon and a global rock frontman, equally at home in his own catalogue and the Styx universe. Despite everything he has accomplished, he remains grounded and energized by the idea that someone out there is discovering his music for the first time. The platinum thread carries on — steady, gleaming, and unmistakably his.

“There’s something about

draped prog-rock flourishes, he always saw performance as a doorway to another world. “You could be a superhero and a piano player and a rockstar,” he says, recalling the moment he realized showmanship could elevate the music.

It wasn’t always embraced. Back in the Toronto club days, his sense of theatre sometimes drew raised eyebrows and the occasional flying beer bottle, as he jokes. Yet those same instincts became priceless in the 1980s, when visuals suddenly played as big a role as the music itself. “If you didn’t get on TV, you weren’t on the radio. Suddenly, all those instincts I had were exactly what everyone needed.”

Then came the 1990s. Grunge and hip hop reshaped the musical landscape, pushing theatrical rock to the sidelines.

Gowan adapted with ...But You Can Call Me Larry, leaning into a more stripped-back singer-songwriter approach. That reinvention helped him stay vital during a decade that sidelined many of his ’80s peers.

Everything changed in 1997. Promoter Donald K. Donald insisted on having him open solo for Styx at the newly built Montreal Forum. Gowan hadn’t opened for anyone in 14 years, and certainly not alone at a piano, but the bestsidemagazine.com

“We wanted it to feel grand, but also intimate.”

She notes that the biggest difference between their usual work and building a show home is that the client is imaginary.

“We love working with clients, of course,” she laughs, “but it gave us the chance to put a creative twist on [the process]. And because it is a show home, we wanted to put as much as we could of ourselves, and our details, into it.”

From the elegant brick and handcut stone facade, you enter through double walnut doors into a grand foyer, where the whole house unfolds before you. To the

left is a bright and spacious home office, with arched brick detail, soothing wallpaper inset and a unique floating desk. On your right is the dining room, almost a mirror image of the home office, but with a difference: here, the brick arch frames a paned glass panel, with doors on each side that open to a side hallway, and the kitchen beyond.

And what a kitchen! Kitchen specialist Andrea KurillaClarke of Artcraft Kitchens was commissioned to make this room into a showstopper. “I went to EuroCucine in Milan before we started,” Andrea says, “and took a lot of the inspiration from that show to the design.”

She notes that the biggest challenge in the kitchen, which is truly massive, was to make it comfortable and super-functional.

yrus focused on learning every step of the building process firsthand.

Rather than taking a traditional academic route, he honed his skills on the job, taking on increasingly complex projects and managing his own builds. Today, he leads the development side of Gatta Homes, guiding each project from vision to completion with the same hands-on care, thoughtful planning, and dedication to quality that has defined the company for decades.

Syrina, in turn, was captivated from a very early age by the aesthetics of custom home design. “Our dad was an artist,” she recalls. “He and I bonded over the creative side of it.” With formal training in interior design from Sheridan, she now leads the creative direction at Gatta Homes, shaping homes that are both elegant and inviting, with thoughtful details that make each space uniquely livable.

The most striking feature is the huge, seven-by-ten-foot island, with its radius corners and built-in extra sink. Over by the windows, ceiling-mounted glass and custom brass-finish storage shelves provide a delicate-seeming platform where beautiful glassware and china can sparkle in the sun. Across the room, gold pocket doors conceal a European-inspired walnutlaminate “butler’s bar” and coffee station.

spices, while just off to the right, another set of glass doors leads into a full pantry, and mudroom beyond.

The great room directly opposite is another standout. A custom-cut porcelain slab panel framing the fireplace rises to the white oakbeamed ceiling 20 feet up; mirrored panels on either side with hidden storage make this bright room even brighter, reflecting light from the garden and outdoor pool just beyond the sliding glass doors.

The PMHL draw took place in midDecember, and a lucky winner will be enjoying their beautiful new Gatta Home.

We wondered what the Gattas might like to say to the winners, should they have the pleasure to actually meet them. For Cyrus, it’s really the same feeling that Gatta Homes has about all its clients.

“We would say,” he answers, “that you’re part of our family now.”

Upstairs, the primary suite is a soothing retreat, with its curved headboard, garden view, and truly sybaritic ensuite and well-appointed dressing area. It also features a nod to history: a wooden slab reclaimed from the old Welland Canal – a symbol of the connection between Niagara and Oakville.

The lower level houses a full spa bath, sauna, fully equipped gym and a wealth of recreational delights – from the openplan theatre area to a full-size cold cellar.

This part of the house is a haven for entertaining, whether it’s for watching a movie or playing a game with family, or a large-scale gathering for friends or business associates.

The idea of fashion and style as design elementals is amply demonstrated by top brand Benjamin Moore’s 2026 COTY, an earthy espresso called Silhouette. “There’s a real connection to the [fashion] runway with Silhouette,” explains Benjamin Moore colour and design expert Sharon Grech, “especially with tailored, refined looks.”

Pairing it with a warm white like Swiss Coffee on trim and ceilings brings out its more traditional side, she notes – think of a crisply tailored Chanel suit – while “drenching” walls, ceilings, and trim, then completing the look with similarly toned textiles, feels new and design-forward.

Complex, expressive shades are right on trend for the year.

We saw hints of this last year with Behr’s 2025 pick, Rumours – a deep wine red with notes of raspberry and chocolate. This year, it’s Hidden Gem, a smoky teal. According to Behr’s Erika Woelfel, “It’s a perfect blend between traditional and practical, and it has a timeless quality; it instantly makes spaces feel more peaceful.”

Actually, several 2026 contenders originate in the green part of the spectrum, which highlights another very strong trend: the life-affirming influence of nature. Just as biophilia – the principle of incorporating plants, water features and other natural elements into our living spaces – has measurable beneficial effects, greenpainted rooms are known to produce a sense of calm and reassurance.

Interestingly, Sherwin-Williams went in a slightly different direction than its compatriots, with a sandy, warm neutral called Universal Khaki. “Universal Khaki is an earthy tan that has a slightly yellow undertone,” observes S-W director of colour marketing Sue Wadden, “typically associated with heavy canvas, uniforms and outdoor gear.” Full of character and yet supremely easy-living, the colour reflects the philosophy that the ultimate luxury is rooted in functionality, practicality and simplicity.

BeautiTone’s choice, a rich, deep olive called Muse, is an artistic take on the nature-as-nurture philosophy. The shade has a vaguely classical air about it, which BeautiTone lead brand creative and colour curator Kristen Gear attributes to the great fine art masters from Da Vinci to the Group of Seven. “Selfexpression is a huge factor this year,” she explains. “We found ourselves looking to history for inspiration: vintage houses, classical art, even the Mona Lisa.”

The 2026 crop also includes a surprise: for the first time, primer specialist Zinsser has come out with its own 2026 Colour of the Year, white. (Most primers are white, so admittedly it was an easy choice.) Particularly with this year’s deeply saturated colours, it’s a way of reminding consumers that primer is the key to a beautiful paint job. As senior brand manager Martin Fuchs explains, “If a wall isn't in perfect shape, if [you’re] making a bold colour change or simply want the best colour, longest-lasting finish and most professional-looking result, starting with primer is always the right choice.”

ucked away on an 80-acre property in Elora, ON, a historic farmhouse has been reimagined into a contemporary country retreat that celebrates its roots while embracing the future. The project, led by Chatsworth Fine Homes in collaboration with Frost Design, bridges heritage and innovation to create a space that feels both timeless and refreshingly new.

For the Chatsworth team, the Elora Project was more than a build; it was an exploration of how to honour history while crafting for the next generation.

“The client originally wanted to renovate the home,” explains project lead Paul Sabourin. “But given the scope and challenges, rebuilding made more sense.

Still, it was important to capture the spirit and qualities of the original farmhouse within the new design. Looking to incorporate that was both exciting and challenging.”

That balance between preservation and progress has long been a hallmark of Chatsworth Fine Homes. Known for meticulous craftsmanship and forwardthinking building practices, the firm approaches each project as stewards of both their clients’ vision and the land they build on. In Elora, that philosophy guided every decision.

Rather than viewing the site’s remoteness as a complication, the Chatsworth team saw it as an opportunity. “We utilized local trades wherever possible,” Sabourin notes. “It provided great value, supported the local community, and led to lasting relationships. Our local site supervisor was really the difference maker, someone we could depend on for all of the quality and integrity aspects we hold ourselves to.”

“Utilizing materials found right on the property felt only natural.” and Elora was no exception. Though not formally certified as a Net Zero home, it incorporates the same advanced building techniques that define the company’s high-performance homes, from airtight construction to superior insulation and energy efficiency. The result is a home that feels as comfortable as it is conscientious.

“Utilizing materials found right on the property felt only natural,” Sabourin adds.

“We don’t like to waste our clients’ money or materials. Using the existing stone from the land not only added authenticity but helped root the home in its surroundings.”

That connection to place is mirrored inside, where Frost Design brought warmth, texture, and balance to the interiors. Principal Designer Vicky Frost and Lead Designer Alexis Endeman worked closely to create a seamless bridge between old and new.

“The goal wasn’t to replicate every element of the original house, but rather to strategically carry through the ones that added warmth and softened the 54 | January • February 2026

modern edges,” Frost explains. “We referenced the beauty of the vaulted wood ceiling from the original home by introducing a variety of wood ceiling details throughout the new spaces. We also carried the Elora stone into the new dining room as a feature wall.”

Consistency was central to the design.

Hardwood flooring, interior doors, and

trim were kept uniform throughout the home, with materials and finishes that struck a balance between rustic character and refined simplicity. “The floors have warmth and texture, while the trim is more streamlined,” Frost notes. “Even the flat slab oak doors, often considered ultra-modern, were stained to match the hardwood, adding character and a sense of connection.” bestsidemagazine.com

The result is a home that feels calm, cohesive, & deeply livable.

The heart of it lies in the main living area, an open-concept space that blends the kitchen, great room, and pantry. “Our clients were totally open to the idea of floating the kitchen in the centre of the space,” Frost recalls. “It created a natural flow to the dining area, especially with the open-concept pantry and bar. We promised to make the pantry stylish and tidy, and I think it worked out great.”

Even the utilitarian spaces were treated with thoughtfulness. A standout is the dark green laundry room, where the walls and cabinetry are painted in the same deep hue. It unexpectedly became a favourite space in the home, a reminder that function and beauty can coexist with ease.

The strong partnership between the builder and designer is evident in every detail. “This house is truly a work of art because of Chatsworth,” Frost says. “Their team was extremely open, efficient, and detail-oriented. The site supervisor even salvaged original elements to rework into the new space.

There’s a date-stamped brick from the original structure incorporated into the new fireplace stone, which is such a meaningful touch.”

For Sabourin and the Chatsworth team, it is this alignment of vision that makes the project so memorable. “It’s not often you get to work on something so visionforward,” he reflects. “Building a family’s dream home, one that honours their story and the land it sits on, is a true privilege.”

The finished home stands as a testament to that philosophy: a place where craftsmanship and design meet heart and history. The Elora Project may be rooted in the past, but its spirit, much like the team that brought it to life, looks confidently toward the future.

Today the Niagara region is a world-class producer of wines, and as our appreciation for it grows, so does the desire to install perfect spaces to store, display, enjoy and share it at home.

W

hen I moved to Niagara almost ten years ago, I discovered not only the richness of its icewines, but also the endless possibilities for designing beautiful, functional spaces that celebrate the art of wine in the home.

I had no idea just how much history, culture, and natural beauty were tucked into this remarkable region.

What I initially thought of as simply “wine country” quickly revealed itself as a vibrant landscape, filled with stories, traditions and an ever-growing community of people passionate about craftsmanship – especially when it comes to wine.

Before we made Niagara our home, my husband and I would often take leisurely drives to the region on warm summer afternoons. Our goal was usually simple: enjoy the scenery and explore a winery or two. At the time, I didn’t realize that Niagara’s wine experience extends far beyond the summer season. Only after settling in did I learn the joy of year-round tastings.

One of our earliest winter memories here was being invited by friends to enjoy wine inside a yurt on a bitterly cold day. The warmth of the company, the novelty of the setting, and the unmistakable sweetness

As we Canadians become increasingly enthusiastic about wine; it’s no surprise that wine storage and display have become frequent considerations in the homes I design. of icewine made the experience unforgettable – even if we shivered our way through it. That moment confirmed not only my appreciation for icewine, but also my admiration for the dedication it takes to create it.

Niagara, and Canada overall, has come a long way in the winemaking industry, particularly in the production of icewine. Today, Canadian Icewine has firmly established the country as a global leader in this specialty category. Ask any wine enthusiast, and they’ll likely tell you that some of the world’s finest icewines come from our very own backyard. the grapes, and cold winters that allow them to freeze naturally on the vine.

This delicate balance of temperature is essential to concentrating the sugars and flavours that make icewine so distinctive.

The festival will run from January 9–31, with the always-anticipated Cool As Ice Gala taking place on January 31st. Icewine Discovery Passes will be available on January 9–11, 16–18, and 23–25, offering visitors the chance to explore curated pairings across numerous wineries.

The festivities also include the charming Niagara-onthe-Lake Icewine Village on January 17–18 and 24–25 – a picturesque outdoor experience that perfectly captures the spirit of winter in wine country.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of icewine or just beginning your journey, Niagara offers a world of experiences waiting to be discovered. And if you ever decide to bring a little piece of wine country into your home, the possibilities are as rich and varied as the wines themselves.

The first question I always ask is simple: What kind of wine or spirits do you plan to store? This shapes everything, from the scale of the room to the layout, the shelving style, and even the lighting.

Wine, and icewine in particular, must be stored properly to maintain its integrity. Ideally, bottles should be kept on their sides in a cool, dark space with a consistent temperature between 51°F and 65°F, away from light, heat sources, and vibrations. While a dedicated wine fridge is a fantastic option, many basements offer naturally suitable conditions as well.

Thankfully, the market today offers a wide range of appliances designed specifically for wine lovers. From sleek stainless-steel units to fully panelready models that blend seamlessly into cabinetry, the options make it easy to incorporate wine storage into any style of home. Beyond refrigeration, there are beautiful ways to showcase bottles, such as slings, wall-mounted displays, and custom millwork, that turn a collection into a striking focal point.

Frosted Pines & Fireside Nights at Muskoka’s Sherwood Inn

Snow-covered branches framed the view, creating the perfect serene winter scene.

After making my reservation at Vintages Restaurant, I settled by the wood-burning fire in the lounge to review the tempting menu. The selections were impressive— meats, fish, pasta, and vegetarian dishes.

My choice was an easy one: the toasted five-spice-crusted Ontario rack of lamb served with Boursin mashed potatoes, seasonal market vegetables, and housemade chimichurri.

The wine list was extensive, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely Pinot Gris from 13th Street Winery in Niagara’s Benchlands, which I had visited recently.

Finally, what winter dining guest is not deserving of the Bananas Foster, a signature warm dessert at the Inn, made with bananas sautéed in a buttery, caramel-like sauce of brown sugar, butter,

fresh snowfall had settled over Muskoka just hours before my arrival at the Sherwood Inn, frosting the evergreens and transforming the woods into a storybook landscape. After the drive from the city—with my two dogs eager beside me—I couldn’t wait to explore the resort’s snow-covered trails: first the gentle Partridge Trail for a warmup, then the wilder Wolf Trail, which winds through a forest shaped long ago by the great logging era of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Along the quiet shores of Lake Joseph, you can still sense that history beneath the hush of winter, where pine, hemlock, maple, and birch stand tall over paths once carved by timbermen and now reclaimed by travellers seeking calm.

The scent of pine always feels sharper in winter, as though the cold air lifts the forest floor right to the surface.

The Inn provides guests with snowshoes and cross-country skis, making it easy to explore its wooded trails and the surrounding winter landscape. For a more adventurous spin, fat bikes are available so you can cruise through the snowy paths instead of hiking. And when conditions allow, the resort offers ice-skating on the property. You won’t be hitting the beach in Bacalar, but there’s no shortage of experiences in and on the water. The lagoon is ideal for kayaking, swimming, paddleboarding or dozing in an over-water hammock.

Bacalar brings back memories of when I first visited Playa del Carmen in the 1990s, when it was closer to a fishing village than a tourist hotspot. Bacalar has the same Bohemian vibe, with small shops and boutiques, colourful murals and good restaurants. Relax on a lagoon-facing patio or terrace, with fresh Pacific shrimp tacos or ceviche and a cold beer.

There are no big hotels or massive nightclubs. The focus is on relaxation, the lagoon and wellness. Beach clubs entice with hammocks and swimming docks.

I loved the evening energy in the town square, where families gathered around food trucks selling crispy foot-long stuffed crêpes called Marquesitas.

I had my best sleep in a long time in a Modernist treehouse-style villa in the jungle at luxury eco-resort Boca de Agua.

The villas are raised into the trees on steel pillars that protect the forest, accessible by two short flights of concrete steps.

The Michelin Key hotel, designed by celebrated Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, has won awards for both style and sustainability.

During the day, I relaxed in a hammock over a shallow pool, watching nimble spider monkeys chase each other in the treetops. In the evening, interior lamps made the vertical wooden slats of the 22 treehouses and Flora Restaurant glow like contemporary sculptures.

The wooden slat walls of my bedroom “pod” were encased in glass to allow for air conditioning. A tiled outdoor shower had a tropical plant privacy screen and Mexicomade Laguna Cyprien bath products.

The focus is on relaxation, the lagoon and wellness...

A second room, linked by a short walkway, had a plunge pool, seating area and hammock. There was room for a massage therapist to set up her table for a relaxing treatment. Each evening, a woman arrived with a bucket of glowing coals and a basket of tree resin, called copal. She placed both in an earthenware burner beside the pool. Fragrant smoke billowed to purify the space.

I woke to the sound of birds, and followed the elevated boardwalk through the trees to the resort’s horizontal dock, for sunrise over the lagoon. It was also a great place to swim.

My meal at Nixtamal in central Bacalar was a highlight. Chef-owner Rodrigo Ovidio specializes in dishes using open fire, coals or ash in a dining room that feels like it’s in a jungle clearing.

to recover from tourism, and visitors are encouraged to avoid using sunscreen to protect the ecosystem. I wore a longsleeved swim shirt that provided good protection from the hot sun.

Lagoon boat tours depart from the historic town centre and include stops at a bird sanctuary and four deepwater cenote sinkholes along the lagoon edges. Some boats go to a shallow channel that pirates once used as a hidden escape route to the coast with their plunder. It’s popular with swimmers, kayakers and waders.

Biologist-guide Abril Román Larios of tour company Adventure Lab gives visitors an excellent introduction to Bacalar Lagoon on a 2.5-hour boat tour. She’s dedicated to protecting the fragile stromatolites.

“They look like rocks doing nothing, but they are amazing things,” she said, calling them “the beginning of our planet.”

The lagoon is also a nursery for stromatolites, the oldest life forms on earth. These living rock-like formations produced the oxygen that made the planet habitable more than three billion years ago.

Relax with Janzu in-water therapy at Our Habitas Bacalar, an adults-only wellness resort on the lagoon. Practitioner Daniel Acatl guided me through a 45-minute ceremony, said to ease stress, promote relaxation and even ease trauma. I put on nose clips and Acatl cradled me, then swirled me through the water. He held my outstretched hand and ankle, easing me under, up and over and around in a dance that left me occasionally disoriented. The only sounds were the swish of water and my breathing.

They still thrive in the reedy waters at the edge of the lagoon. Shallow areas where they’re in danger from being touched by swimmers or hit by boats are marked off with ropes. Each Wednesday, the lagoon is closed to boat tours to give it a chance

Turquoise water and blue sky merged on a cloudless afternoon. Acatl gently turned me to face the opposite shore of the aquamarine lagoon. “Open your eyes,” he said. “See the beauty around you. See the beauty inside you.”

I flew to Cancún and travelled to Bacalar in about four hours on the new Tren Maya, a clean and comfortable train that travels around the Yucatán Peninsula.

“In 2017, Le Clos Jordanne began its renaissance period with a new commitment from Arterra Wines Canada and Thomas Bachelder,” they share. “The timing of our Domaine opening just seemed right, so we could continue to extend our terroir story and gain the ability to connect on a more personal level with our wine family.”

The estate sits on the Beamsville Bench, one of the most respected viticultural areas in the Niagara Peninsula. Known for more than five decades of winegrowing history, it was a natural fit for the next phase.

Hidden sugars are surprisingly common, and too much can leave you feeling drained, cause energy crashes, spike blood sugar, cause inflammation, and even contribute to bloating or water retention. Over time, excess sugar in your diet can affect mood, focus, and overall wellness.

The good news is that swapping in natural, unprocessed sweeteners like honey or maple syrup can make an impact on how we feel. As a nutritionist and co-owner of Dutchman’s Gold, I’ve seen firsthand how choosing natural, unprocessed sweeteners can help you enjoy the sweetness you love while supporting steady energy throughout the day. These alternatives tend to have a lower glycemic response than refined

sugar and also contain amounts of nutrients and antioxidants that contribute to overall well-being.

With just a few thoughtful adjustments in the kitchen, you can enjoy the foods you love while bringing more balance and nourishment into your everyday meals.

A simple rule of thumb when swapping refined sugar for natural sweeteners is to use a little less than a full cup, because honey and maple syrup are both sweeter and add moisture. In most baked goods, replace 1 cup of sugar with ½-⅔ cup of unpasteurized honey or ¾ cup of maple syrup. Because these natural sweeteners are liquid, you may also need to reduce other liquids in the recipe slightly. Overall, the goal is to keep the sweetness balanced while maintaining the right texture in your baking.

HOT HONEY STEAK MARINADE Most BBQ sauces and glazes are packed with hidden sugars. Instead, try this simple marinade for a naturally sweet glaze.

INGREDIENTS (Marinade for 1-1.5 lb steak) ● 2 tbsp olive oil ● 1 ½ tbsp hot honey ● 2 tbsp soy sauce ● 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce ● 2 minced garlic cloves ● 1 tsp black pepper ● 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

(if using regular honey) ● ½ tsp smoked paprika ● pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS Whisk all ingredients until the honey dissolves. Place the steak in a shallow dish or bag and coat with the marinade.

Marinate 30 minutes to 6 hours. Bring to room temperature for 20-30 minutes before cooking.

COOKING (pan-sear method): Heat a heavy pan over medium-high.

Add a small amount of oil. Remove the steak from the marinade, shake off excess, and pat lightly dry. Sear 3-4 minutes on the first side and 2-3 minutes on the second side for medium-rare. Rest 5-10 minutes before slicing.

CLEAN MAPLE VINAIGRETTE DRESSING Store-bought salad dressings also often pack a ton of hidden sugar. Making your own dressing is so simple – with a few pantry ingredients, you can put something together yourself in under a minute. Often, I’ll make a larger batch at the beginning of the week to last a few days, and use it on both in salads and rice or veggie bowls.

INGREDIENTS (makes ½ cup) ● 3 tbsp olive oil ● 1 tbsp maple syrup ● 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

(or apple cider vinegar) ● 1 tsp Dijon mustard ● 1 small garlic clove, finely

grated or minced ● Salt and black pepper to taste ● Optional) 1-2 tsp finely chopped

fresh thyme, tarragon, or chives, or a pinch of dried oregano DIRECTIONS Whisk vinegar, maple syrup, Dijon, garlic, salt, and pepper until smooth. Slowly whisk in the olive oil until emulsified. Add herbs, if using. Adjust seasoning or acidity to taste.

NO-BAKE PEANUT BUTTER & BANANA ENERGY BITES These are a perfect midday snack when a sweet craving hits. We love energy bites because they’re chock full of healthy fats and fibre, are simple to make, and freeze beautifully.

INGREDIENTS ● ½ cup natural peanut butter ● 1 banana, chopped ● 1-½ cups old-fashioned oats ● ⅔ cup unsweetened shredded coconut ● ¼ ground flaxseed ● ½ cup dark chocolate, finely chopped ● ⅓ cup Dutchman's Gold Wildflower or Summer Blossom Honey ● 2 tbsp Dutchman's Gold Bee Pollen

SOURDOUGH SWEET + SALTY SNACK This is one of my favourite go-to snacks, especially pre- or post-workout. It’s simple, quick, and hits the perfect balance of healthy carbs, natural sugars, and electrolytes, without relying on sugary jams or jellies.

INGREDIENTS ● 1 slice sourdough bread (toasted, if you like) ● 1-2 tsp raw honey ● Healthy pinch of pink Himalayan or sea salt

DIRECTIONS Spread raw honey over the sourdough and finish with a light sprinkle of salt.

BONUS POINTS The sourdough provides easily digestible carbohydrates for quick energy. Raw honey offers natural sugars and antioxidants without the crash of refined spreads. The pinch of sea salt adds electrolytes, supporting hydration and muscle recovery – ideal for both pre- and post-workout fuel.

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Using a fork, mash and stir until all ingredients are well combined. (If you feel the consistency is a bit too sticky, add more oats as needed.) Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes; this will help in creating the bites later.

Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and roll “dough” into 1-inch balls.

Keep bites refrigerated.

ieran Hughes has built his artistic career on curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to reinvent. Working across painting, mixed media, sculpture and large-scale installations, he approaches each new idea with the openness of a self-taught creator.

“My journey as an untrained artist shapes everything I create,” he says.

“I research, teach myself, and refine my craft until I can create a meaningful work of art.”

Hughes views creation as an ongoing cycle of experimentation. He often allows pieces to break down and be rebuilt, mirroring what he describes as the natural fluctuations of life.

“This process is inherently chaotic,” he says. “I strive for my work to feel genuine and alive, resisting the urge to make it scientific or static.”

That instinct for exploration extends across a diverse mix of materials. His studio is a meeting place for spray paint, found objects, brass instruments, and the inner workings of vintage audio equipment. For Hughes, each medium becomes a way to articulate sound, emotion, and movement in a visual language. “My curiosity drives me to experiment,” he says. “Each material informs the others, helping me connect sound, form, and emotion.”

It acts as a conceptual framework that guides his creative process. Hughes likens it to leading an orchestra, shaping the components of a piece the way a conductor shapes a performance. Brass instruments in particular, with their rich history and expressive presence, have become a signature element in his work.

Their sculptural qualities and emotional resonance took centre stage in his recent series, Balance.

In Balance, Hughes reflects on the meeting point between tradition and innovation.

Brass instruments become symbols of the analogue world, reshaped to speak to digital-age ideas. “Each sculpture represents intersections, weaving together past, present, and future,” he explains.

The works invite viewers to reflect on harmony, transformation, and the sense of escape or uplift that music can offer.

Hughes recalls his lifelong connection to music, from the tactile experience of cassettes and vinyl to the artistry of the instruments themselves. It is this layered relationship that he brings into his installations.

By rescuing that food and delivering it where it was needed most, Food for Life began a movement that continues to thrive three decades later.

Today, the organization rescues and redistributes close to five million pounds of healthy food each year. A small staff team of 20 works alongside more than 800 volunteers, corporate and community partners, foundations, food donors, and dedicated monthly and individual supporters to ensure more than 4,500 households receive nourishing food every week through 90 programs. “Our growth has

always been in direct response to community needs,” Karen explains. “It is informed by neighbour voices and strengthened by feedback, research, and deep engagement with those we serve.”

This collaborative philosophy has been essential to Food for Life’s impact. Meaghan describes the organization as belonging entirely to the community. Every pound of food rescued, every food program stocked, and every delivery to an agency partner represents the efforts of many hands. “All are essential parts of a whole that sustains and grows Food for Life,” she says. Local farmers, grocers, and food donors set aside surplus items; volunteers sort and prepare fresh food; agency partners distribute it alongside housing supports, wellness services, and social assistance. This ecosystem ensures that food access remains consistent, dignified, and accessible.

Food for Life’s mission does not end with nutrition. Environmental stewardship is equally central. “Rescuing Food. Impacting Lives” reflects a dual commitment to people and planet. The organization works with more than 100 food donors to divert surplus, imperfect, and best-before-date foods that would otherwise contribute to avoidable waste. Once received, the food is carefully sorted and directed into one of three streams: distribution to neighbours, livestock feed, or compost. Less than 1% ends up in a landfill.

A distinguishing strength of Food for Life is its focus on rescuing fresh, nutritious food. Proteins, dairy, and produce are often the most expensive items in a grocery basket, and for many households, they are the least accessible. “No one should have to compromise their beliefs or their health because they struggle with income, everyone should have access to foods that nourish,” Karen explains. These foods are nutritionally dense, culturally adaptable, and essential for health and well-being.

The impact is measurable. According to the organization’s 2025 Neighbour Impact Report, 91% of neighbours surveyed said that Food for Life improved their overall health. More than half reported dietary improvements. With 77% of households having $0 to $200 left for food after essential expenses, access to fresh and frozen food can dramatically stretch limited budgets. One neighbour expressed it simply: “Food for Life has provided me with vegetables that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to access.

Each year, this work diverts over six million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. Karen notes that this is equivalent to removing 1,300 cars from the road. The organization’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of lean principles, water-efficient cooling systems, sophisticated routing, composting, and alternative waste pilots. The economic efficiency is notable as well. Every ten dollars donated becomes seventy-one dollars’ worth of food rescued.

As Food for Life looks toward the future, both leaders acknowledge that the challenges facing the community remain significant. Rising living costs, precarious employment, and gaps in social supports continue to place pressure on households.

“We know our work is far from done,”

Karen says. “Food security isn’t just about having enough to eat – it's about reliable access to foods that maintain wellbeing, fulfill dietary and cultural needs and the dignity of not having to set aside what matters in order to eat.

Food stability strengthens health and social outcomes, but income stabilization is essential. Until then, we stand ready with our neighbours, ensuring access to food that truly meets their needs.”

In the year ahead, Food for Life plans to expand its food procurement efforts, increasing both variety and volume and placing deeper emphasis on food equity. This includes meeting the dietary and cultural needs of an increasingly diverse community. The organization is also exploring an innovative pilot project that would transform surplus seasonal produce, such as tomatoes, potatoes, squash, and peaches, into pre-chopped or preserved

items. This would extend the usefulness of rescued food and make meal preparation easier for those facing mobility or time-related challenges.

Through every evolution, the heart of Food for Life has remained steady. It is a community-powered organization driven by generosity, neighbour insights, and the tireless work ethic of its staff and volunteers. “Food for Life will continue to rescue food and impact lives for years to come,” Meaghan says. “We are fuelled by countless acts of kindness.”
