TJLA SHOW HEIFER OF THE YEAR WINNERS Congratulations to Madison Culpepper of Gonzales, Texas, for exhibiting the 2016 TJLA Show Heifer of the Year, LFL Belinda; and to Barrett Howe from Cahoma, Texas, with his reserve TJLA Show Heifer of the Year, PBRS Black Lace. Each were presented custom-made trophy buckles by Tittor Buckles and Spurs prior to the 2017 Lone Star Shoot-Out. Making the presentation was Randa Taylor, TJLA President; and Ralph Hawkins, TLA Executive Secretary.

The 2017 show heifer point year is now under way-good luck to all exhibitors. Exhibitors must be members of the Texas Junior Limousin Association.

Point Scale: 20 points for grand champion, 15 points for reserve grand champion, a descending scale for the top 5 places in class beginning with ten points for 1st, nine for 2nd, eight for 3rd, seven for 4th and six for 5th. Points are calculated on each animal. An exhibitor with more than one animal cannot combine points.

Points will be considered beginning with the Lone Star Shoot-Out, Fort Worth Junior Show, San Antonio Junior Show, San Angelo Junior Show, Houston Junior Show, Star of Texas at Austin, TJLA Field Day, NALJA Heifer Show, West Texas Fair, East Texas Junior Show, South Plains Fair, Tri State Fair, State Fair of Texas, and Heart of Texas. Shows must have a Limousin breed show for points to count. In the event of a tie, points from Field Day will be used as tie breaker, if still a tie then Junior Nationals will be tie breaker.

Points from only five of the aforementioned shows will be used to determine winners, the following placings are based on the top 5 shows. Exhibitors should check the point totals on the TLA website and advise the TLA office of any discrepancies.

Fellow Members and Friends, The past three months have been a whirlwind of activity with major shows in Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Austin and Houston.

We applaud those who invested the time, effort and money to promote the breed and their programs. The results can be found on the pages of this issue.

Before we look forward to the next opportunities to participate in upcoming events, I would like to take a moment to thank those who participated in the TLA’s membership meetings, banquet and benefit auction. I hope attendees found the new venue and caterer enjoyable.

Looking forward, the TLA’s Springtime Sale will be Saturday May 13 at the Stowers Land & Cattle sale facility in Bridgeport, Texas. Members have consigned a tremendous set of bulls, pairs and breds, as well as show heifers eligible for the 2018 Lone Star Shoot-Out with a guaranteed purse of $10,000.

The Texas Junior Limousin Field Day and Heifer show will be May 26, 27 and 28 at the Mallet Event Center in Levelland. Weaver Show Supplies will hold a fitting clinic Friday. Bred-and-owned shows, and showmanship, as well as satellite events, will be Saturday; and the show will conclude with steers, owned Lim-Flex and Limousin heifers Sunday. The TJLA awards banquet will be Saturday night. Hotel information can be found in the news and notes section of this issue.

The 2017 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress as well as the AllAmerican Limousin Futurity, will be in Grand Island, Nebraska, July 1-7.

Pharmaceutical Reps Promote Beef To Doctors by: Amanda Radke, BEEF Magazine Reprinted here with permission.

The Texas Beef Council has employed four pharmaceutical reps to sell beef as part of a hearthealthy diet to physicians.

In 2006, my grandpa had a heart attack. I heard the news while competing at the National Beef Ambassador contest in Austin, Texas, and I prayed I could win the contest for my grandpa and bring him the good news to cheer him up while he was in recovery at the hospital.

I did win that contest, and showing Grandpa my plaque is still one of my favorite memories.

And I credit my year as a Beef Ambassador—a program of the beef checkoff —as one of the most important catalysts for my career. In addition to promoting beef to consumers across the country, it also opened up many doors for me in the industry, including this blogging gig with BEEF. So for all of that I am thankful.

With fond memories of my time in Texas at the national competition, I was recently reminded of the good work the Texas Beef Council does on behalf of our nation’s beef producers.

The Texas Beef Council has launched a unique program promoting beef in a heart-healthy diet that employs the expertise of award-winning pharmaceutical sales reps with experience in cardiac health and nutrition based in Dallas and Houston.

According to a release from the Texas Beef Council, “In 2016, Texas Beef Council hired two

pharmaceutical sales reps who visit physicians, seeing a minimum of 300 high cholesterol patients per month. Each office visit varies in scope, but the goal of delivering science-based information and discussing it with the physician one-on-one remains

the same. Today, there are two reps in Dallas and two reps in Houston working to educate MDs on behalf of Texas cattlemen and women.

“Initial research was conducted to determine why and in what instances doctors were limiting their patients beef intake. Additional research examined what type of messaging and delivery would most resonate with physicians. Realizing doctors have limited time with each patient, the Texas Beef Council developed a ‘How to Lower

Your Cholesterol’ patient brochure for doctors to distribute. The brochure, paired with the messaging delivered by the reps, work together to bring the research to both the doctor and the patients to support them eating more beef in their new heart-healthy lifestyles.”

This is a genius move on the part of the Texas Beef Council. Looking back to my grandpa’s stint in the heart hospital following his heart attack, one of the first things the doctors suggested to him was that he cut red meat from his diet. However, research shows that beef can fit into a heart-healthy diet, and to date, the Texas Beef Council reps have reached more than 4,137 doctors in one-on-one visits, which considering their number of people they consult each year, has the potential to impact more than 1.2 million patients per month.

According to the press release, “The information provided covers three main research concepts: the evolution of lean beef, the BOLD study (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet), and a metaanalysis comparing beef to chicken in a cholesterol lowering program. Physicians and patients leave knowing beef does fit into a healthy diet and can be just as effective as chicken in lowering cholesterol.”

TLA members offered open heifers eligible for the 2018 Lone Star Shoot-Out, bred females, herd sire prospects, embryos, and semen packages on TASF Crown Royal, the 2017 National Champion Limousin Bull. $10,200—The top-selling lot was LFL Captain Crunch, a 9/1/15 double homozygous Lim-Flex sired by S A V Pioneer consigned by Lawrence Family Limousin of Anton, Texas, and purchased

by May Farms of Lamar, Colorado. $5,000—CHR Currier, a 10/18/15 double homozygous, Lim-Flex son of MAGS Eagle was consigned by Coyote Hills Ranch of Chattanooga,

Oklahoma, and purchased by Jeff Hudson of Marshall, Texas. $8,500—The top-selling open heifer was LFL Debby, a 5/16/16 black, homozygous polled LimFlex daughter of MAGS Aviator consigned by Lawrence Family Limousin and purchased by Denny Douglass of Seguin, Texas. $4,100—The top-selling bred heifer was JCL Keilma, a 4/1/15 double homozygous Lim-Flex daughter of JCL Black Jet who sold bred to HUBB Bulletproof. Tips For Breeding Tricky Two-Year-Olds by: Taylor Grussing, SDSU Extension Cow-Calf Field Specialist Keeping cows in the herd long enough for them to pay for themselves is often easier said than done, especially when brining young cows into the herd each year to replace cull cows. This is because in order to get young females into the brood cow herd, we must first succeed at breeding them back after they have their first calf. Two-year-old cows are the most difficult group to rebreed because they are still growing while raising their first calf, thus requiring extra groceries in order to meet nutrient demands and resume normal estrous cycles. It is also especially critical that she conceives at this age because to date she has yet to bring any income into the bank until her first calf is weaned and sold this fall. Depending on individual cost of production, cows must remain, on average, in the herd until they are at least 6 years of age and weaned 5 calves before they’ll start turning positive dollars at the bottom of the balance sheet.

Management Tips Here are some tips for how can we get more of these tricky two-year-olds pregnant: Let them graze the best quality pasture and/or supplement: By increasing the feed quality and/or supplementing them separately from mature cows, young cows will receive the extra necessary nutrients to meet their maintenance, growth and lactation requirements. In addition, extra nutrient intake allows young cows to devote some nutrients to reproduction, resume estrous cycles and hopefully re-breed within 82 days after calving in order to maintain a 365 day calving interval.

Short-term or early weaning: With peak milk production coinciding with the start of the breeding season, short term weaning (48 hours prior to estrous synchronization or bull turn out) or early weaning (45 to 80 days old) can be utilized to induce estrus in postpartum cows.

The event of decreased suckling triggers hormone changes and the replenishing of essential hormones necessary to resume cyclicity. With short-term or early weaning, it’s important to remember to supply the calves with high quality forage and protein supplements so performance is not significantly affected. Short-term and early weaning may not only help induce earlier resumption of estrus cycles, but also have shown to increase pregnancy rates in thin first-calf heifers (<5 BCS).

Reproductive Technologies: CIDRs and Bull Exposure: External factors can also be used to induce estrus in young cows to help them rebreed earlier. One way involves the use of exogenous progesterone in a controlled internal drug release (CIDR). CIDRs are an effective way to boost resumption of estrous cycles in anestrus cows, young or old, and can be used in a variety of AI protocols as well as with natural service synchronization. Also, exposure to a sterile/gomer bull or androgenized cow are ways to begin natural circulation of reproductive hormones. This occurs due to the natural release of pheromones, which triggers reproductive hormone responses from the young cow to begin resuming estrous cycles.

Although two-year-old females are some of the most difficult to manage in the herd, they also represent the new genetics of the operation and will likely deliver much desired value in the future. Visit with your team of experts for your operation to determine a way that works best for you to successfully rebreed and retain these quality young females into the cow herd.
