TJLA PREPARES YOUTH FOR LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITES

It’s the first Texas Limousin state show you attend. You pull up to the fairgrounds with all the nerves and excitement rushing through you.

As you go find where your stalls are, you are welcomed by smiling faces and firm handshakes.

Once the stalls are set up and the calves are fed, those same friendly people invite you to dinner and encourage you to join in a fun night of games. Not only are the adults welcoming, but the junior members include you in the conversations and laughter as though you have known them your entire life.

Becoming a member of the Texas Junior Limousin Association (TJLA) means you become a part of this friendly family. The TJLA prepares its youth for the future with valuable leadership and industry skills taught through events and competitions.

The TJLA is home to 61 members who all reap the benefits of being part of such a dedicated organization. Attending state and national shows allows TJLA members to compete in more than just the show ring.

Satellite events are contests that showcase member talents through photo contests, sales talk, quiz bowl, livestock judging and more.

Leighton Chachere, a TJLA member, said, “Field day shows how the association cares about its members and how much it want their kids to learn from it and not just be there to show.”

Being a part of TJLA gives members the opportunity to meet people across the nation.

Chachere said competing in events such as the beef cook-off, a satellite event combining a group skit and a cook-off, allows everyone to become comfortable around each other. It is a great ice breaker to get acquainted with the Limousin family.

“As much as we all complain about doing a skit and having to sit around and learn everything, it’s my favorite memory with TJLA,” Chachere said. “It is something that allows us to become comfortable with each other.”

McKinley Begert, member and current secretary/treasurer for the TJLA, said she has been involved with the Limousin breed her entire life because of the role it has played in her family’s life. She said she is looking to receive full benefit from being a member.

“It is the greatest organization you can be a part of,” said Begert. “You get so many opportunities that most people will never experience and learn so many valuable lessons that will stick with you for life.”

Begert said she has witnessed what the TJLA can do for its members and said she looks forward to the upcoming show year with her Limousin family.

“I hope to continue on the TJLA board and run for the NALJA board within the next few years,” Begert said.

Some of the leadership Begert has witnessed and said she has been inspired by is that of the current TJLA president, Randa Taylor. Taylor has been involved with the Limousin breed for 11 years. She has shown and competed on the state and national level. During the 2016 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress she became a director for the North American Limousin Junior Association.

As a NALJA director, Taylor’s duties include preparing for the 2017 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress in Grand Island, Nebraska. She said that being part of the TJLA has prepared her for a national leadership position by teaching her how to get out of her comfort zone and become more confident.

“My favorite part about being a leader for these organizations is getting to meet new people, being a positive role model and getting to interact with the younger kids,” Taylor said.

The TJL A teaches leadership skills to be used in all areas, proven through Taylor’s success. She has used the TJLA to her full advantage and has become a leader for NALJA, her FFA chapter and student body because of what the TJLA has taught her.

The TJLA equips its youth for leadership and future career positions and teaches them valuable life lessons. It creates a friendly environment where everyone feels welcome.

It is because of the small breed that every member can feel special and benefit from what all the TJLA has to offer.

Before arriving at any of the major shows this spring make certain your heifer(s) tattoo is legible, matches the information on her registration certificate, and have the original papers on your person when you enter the ring.

All first and second place animals are checked at the conclusion of each class. Failure to have a legible tattoo or original papers with you will result in a disqualification.

2017 TLA MEMBERSHIP DUES

It is time to renew your membership in the Texas Limousin Association. Membership dues allow the TLA to publish the TLA News with a circulation of more than 2,000 copies; maintain a worldwide presence through its website, www.texas-limousin.com; support the junior program; provide support to stock shows; and offer marketing opportunities to its members through the web and consignment sales.

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY Fellow Members and Friends, Another year has come and gone and a new one has arrived with an abundance of opportunities to be involved in Texas Limousin Association activities. The TLA’s Lone Star Shoot-Out will be January 21, 2017, in the cattle arena of the Fort Worth Stock Show where 21 junior exhibitors will compete for $10,000 in prize money. The Fort Worth Stock Show Junior Limousin Heifer Show will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 22 in the east ring of the Watt Arena. The Cowtown Classic Limousin Sale will be January 27 in the west arena of the Richardson-Bass building where 37 quality lots of Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics will be offered. The Level I Medal of Excellence Limousin Show will be at noon in the cattle arena January 28, followed by the TLA’s Annual Membership Meeting at 5 p.m. in rooms D and E of the Richardson Bass building with Banquet and Benefit Auction to follow at 7 p.m.

This year, the board decided to hold all of its activities on the stock show grounds to allow exhibitors and spectators alike to participate in all of the activities. I encourage you to come watch the show and support the exhibitors who will parade some of the best Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle in the land. After the show, come to the member meeting and be a part of the TLA’s plans for 2017.

Stay for the banquet, enjoy a meal catered by the famous Reata restaurant and visit with old friends and make new ones.

VETERINARY FEED DIRECTIVE CHANGES EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1 Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) changes take effect January 1, 2017.

Now is the time to work with your veterinarian, feed mill and other antimicrobial distributors to ensure a smooth transition.

The VFD changes will limit the use of some antimicrobials administered in feed and require veterinary oversight to obtain these products. These changes will affect all food-producing animals.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA), which sets policies for antimicrobial development and usage in humans and animals, is responsible for the VFD changes. FDA’s goal is to protect public health.

Limiting antimicrobial resistance through judicious use of antibiotics is crucial to meeting that goal.

The new VFD regulations focus on medically important antimicrobials.

These are products from drug classes that are important for therapeutic use in humans and are used in animals also. Antimicrobials used only in animals, such as ionophores and coccidiostats, are not affected by the VFD changes.

Medically-important antimicrobials will be limited to therapeutic uses only. Feeding these types of antimicrobials for growth promotion or increased feed efficiency will no longer be allowed.

Medically-important antimicrobials administered in feed can no longer be purchased over-the-counter (OTC). A VFD order from the herd’s veterinarian will be required to obtain the antimicrobials from a feed mill or retail distributor. These businesses must notify FDA that they intend to distribute VFD antimicrobials.

Medically-important antimicrobials administered by water will require a prescription. Antibiotics administered by injection, oral bolus or intramammary infusion that are currently available OTC will NOT be affected.

A farm must have a valid veterinarian-client-patient-relationship (VCPR) for their veterinarian to write a VFD order. The veterinarian will provide copies of the VFD order to the feed mill (or another distributor) and the herd owner. This may occur as a paper copy or electronically. All three parties (veterinarian, feed mill/distributor and herd owner) must keep copies of the VFD order for two years.

Extra-label drug use is not allowed for feed medications. The product must be used as labeled, including the species, indication, dosage and feeding duration. As an example, medicated milk replacers containing a combination of oxytetracycline and neomycin must be used according to the usage label (7-14 days).

Are you prepared for the VFD changes? Make sure you have a valid VCPR by talking with your veterinarian. If they are not familiar with your herd management, you can schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to review your practices and protocols and assess the health of the herd. Also, check with your current product distributors. Some distributors may no longer carry the products that you use. Taking time now to plan for these VFD changes will ensure a smoother transition.

ANN PORTER WILDER Ann Porter Wilder, 75, of Bryan, Texas, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at home surrounded by family and friends.

She was born on January 3, 1941, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to Mary Jarvis Porter and Julius Holland Porter, a farmer and rancher in the Brazos River bottom.

Her family lived on their farm in Burleson County for five years before moving to Bryan in 1946. She attended Bryan Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1959 from Stephen F. Austin High School.

After graduating from high school, Ann attended Greenbrier, Texas Christian, and Sam Houston Universities. She received a Bachelor’s in Education and taught elementary school for 30 years before retiring in 1997. She continued to serve the students of BISD after retirement while serving as a HOST volunteer and board member and eventual President of the BISD Education Foundation.

She served as a volunteer and the Secretary for the Brazos County Youth Livestock Association for over four decades. Together, she and her husband, Joe, received the Friend of 4-H Award from Brazos County, the Texas A&M University Extension Award, the Chamber of Commerce Adult Leaders of Youth Groups Award and the Honorary Lone Star Degree from the Texas FFA. As a member of the Woman’s Club of Bryan for over two decades, Ann served as President, Recording Secretary, and the chairman of many committees. An active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Club, Ann helped establish the Delta Omega Chapter at Texas A&M in 1975, served as the local Alumnae Club President, Fundraiser Chairman, and President of the House Corporation.

Ann’s family joined First United Methodist Church of Bryan in 1948, and she remained an active member throughout her life. She

held numerous positions, participated in various youth projects, and was President of the Mary Porter Sunday School class, which was named after her mother after she passed away in 1964. Ann regularly volunteered at Crestview Retirement Center.

She loved antiquing, gardening, traveling and shopping. But most of all, she loved being involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Ann loved to travel and passed this appreciation onto her family.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Whitley Wilder, to whom she was high school and college sweethearts and married to for 54 years; two daughters and spouses, Jo Ann and Terry Coates of Oakwood and Mary Jane and Sean Snedeker of Tulsa, Oklahoma; son, Jay and wife, Molly Wilder of Bryan; five grandchildren, Britney and husband Steven Hindman of Lindale, Sydney Snedeker of Austin, Sy Snedeker of Tulsa, Jayce Wilder and Spencer Wilder of Bryan; two sisters, Patsy and husband Bob Speed of Houston, and Mary Sue Rabe of College Station; one brother, Jarvis and wife Pam Porter of Dallas; sister-in-law, Virginia Todd of Bryan; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
