Richard McClung

Some of the qualities and accomplishments that a person should possess to be considered for an honor such as the Handbook Dedication are: Have a positive impact on state and national associations, the breed and beef industry; be respected by their peers and those around them; made a difference. This year’s honoree checks all these boxes and more. The 2020 Virginia Angus Association Handbook Dedication honoree is Richard McClung. Richard graduated from West Virginia University in 1964 and his first job was with Greenbrier Stock Farm in Lewisburg, West Virginia. I first met Richard in 1974 at Totier Creek Farm in Scottsville, Virginia, traveling Richard McClung, presented by Norm Vincel with Roy Wallace. Roy always believed that in searching for great bulls you employed the principle “herd first, individual second”, seeking out those herds that were truly genetically superior; and is what led Roy and us to Richard. From Scottsville, Richard went to Cairo, Georgia, where he partnered with Nick Wehrmann to establish Wehrmann Angus, and then moved to Court Manor in New Market, Virginia, where Wehrmann Angus became a household name around the country as a source of elite Angus cattle. Bulls and cows known only by their unique numbers were familiar to everyone; 9J9, 9FB3, 9M9, 6I6, 9FB2, 7T26 to mention a few. Wehrmann Angus placed 29 bulls in major AI studs and sold over 7,500 seedstock Angus bulls. Richard believed in giving back and provided leadership to breed and industry boards; Virginia Angus, Virginia BCIA, Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) where he served as president in 2002. Wehrmann Angus hosted countless 4-H and FFA judging teams, tours, educational events, field days, participated in research trials and provided the Angus Foundation with over $100,000 in support. One of his key research collaborations was with Dr. Bill Beal, Virginia Tech, where they physically milked over 100 Angus cows in order to help validate the Milk EPD used in today sire evaluation. This was no small task! Richard received many awards during his career. Those included the Virginia BCIA Seedstock Producer award, 1997 BIF Seedstock Award, 2003 Virginia Cattleman of the Year, 2010 BIF Pioneer Award, 2014 West Virginia University Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame, 2017 Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame. Finally, many friends that could not attend in person wanted to pass along their congratulatory remarks, including Dr. Bill Beal, Mark Gardiner, Brian House and Dr. A.L. “Ike” Eller. When asked of Ike what he wanted to relay to those in attendance he stated, “the most redeeming characteristic of Richard McClung is his wife Susan”. She was the glue that held the family together and was a partner with Richard in their life’s journey. Congratulations Richard! 2019-2020 VIRGINIA ANGUS HANDBOOK • 5

THE PURPOSE of the

VIRIGINA ANGUS ASSOCIATION The activities of the VIRGINIA ABERDEEN-ANGUS ASSOCIATION are manifold; the objectives are essentially basic. Its primary concern is to insure the continued success of Angus cattle and their breeders in general, and in Virginia in particular. To accomplish this, the purpose may be subdivided into the following interlocking divisions. To promote and expand the market for ABERDEEN-ANGUS Cattle; the commercial and breeding, as well as the show ring stock. To improve the breed-always bearing in mind that the ultimate destination is the table-by unifying the work of experienced breeders and guiding the efforts of the novice towards the development of an ideal type. To publicize and disseminate the public at large proofs of the superiority of Angus cattle and Angus beef, by mean of the written and spoken word, by pictures and photographs, and by associationsponsored exhibitions, shows and sales. To assist and encourage boys and girls to select, raise, and properly fit Angus cattle for breeding, or for show or for shambles. To aid breeders with problems of management, herd improvement, selection or merchandising, both by public auction and by private treaty. To maintain and guard the highest standards of integrity in the registration of cattle, without which the pure-bred business would disintegrate. To serve as a repository of information relation to the breed in all its phases, and to make it available to breeders. To further the spirit of cooperation and understanding of harmony and good-fellowship, among breeders, not only in Virginia, but wherever grass and corn are grown. In short, the purpose of the VIRGINIA ABERDEEN-ANGUS ASSOCIATION is to make Angus beef more profitable to the grower and the butcher, and to make it available to every table in the land, at least once each day, to the ultimate betterment of national health, energy and hence, prosperity. ~ From the 1954-1955 VAA Handbook ~ 20 • 2020-2021 VIRGINIA ANGUS HANDBOOK

HALL OF Gordon MERIT KeysHONOREE

Gordon Keys, presented by Jerry Crenshaw How humbling, it is for me, to give out the highest honor that Virginia Angus has to offer to its fraternity of members. A long time ago in the land North of us, across the Potomac River, a junior 4-H member was born. Not the Angus breeder we know and love today, but a pig farmer raising Berkshire hogs. After attending, the University of Maryland he was even offered a job as a fieldman for the American Berkshire Association. He thought about it long and hard, a fantastic offer for a 22-year-old, but decided he wanted to farm instead, it was his calling in life. Luckily for all of us, he also had a love for Angus cattle. Raising crops, Angus cattle and Thoroughbred horses were to be his demise, as he is still doing it today in Virginia. Now, I could go on about his storied life of showing, selling and breeding Angus cattle; racing Thoroughbred horses; fox hunting around the Virginia countryside; and traveling across the country with his best friend Tommy Stokes. With so many funny stories, I don’t know where I would start or which stories I could tell in public. Or, I could just tell you about the man. I choose the Man. As that is what the” Hall of Merit” is all about. He is so proud of raising a family of four children and now grandchildren, all involved in agriculture in some way in their lives. He has found time and a way, to work “farming and family” into a balanced equation. Continued on page 30 2020-2021 VIRGINIA ANGUS HANDBOOK • 29

2020-2021 Continued from page 29

In the Spring, he is so anxious, checking new babies especially the AI calves. He is like a little kid in a candy store looking over each one. I enjoy watching him, as excited today, as he was when he first started breeding Angus cattle. He is out analyzing them, to see if he bred the next great herd bull or next great heifer. Watching him with each new foal he has bred, to see if it has the makings of a great race horse, steeplechaser or fox hunter—is a pleasure. This man is involved in agriculture 100%, from government politics on the local, state and national level to make sure his voice, Our Voice is heard all in the name of the American farmer. He has served on many local and state boards and committees all in the name of Angus cattle and agriculture as a whole. Whether he is sitting and talking with a 9-year-old 4-H kid with an

Angus heifer or sitting with a President of the United States talking about agriculture, he is just as comfortable either way. But, by far, our youth is his ultimate passion! Helping many a junior with the desire to breed or show Angus cattle. He, and his wife, Robin, are Lifetime Honorary members of the American Angus Foundation and have donated in excess of $50,000 to the American Angus Foundation to provide designated scholarships for Maryland and Virginia Angus juniors. In January, at the Ranchers Rendezvous—A Night to Remember Sale during the National Western Stock Show in Denver, he was involved in a $103,000-plus fundraiser event for the Angus Foundation with his part in Lot 12 “The Ultimate Herd Visit to Virginia.” This man is as relevant today in 2020 as he was when he started farming. It is now my deepest honor and privilege to induct into the 2020 Virginia Angus Hall of Merit, Mr. Gordon C. Keys.
