THE MAKING OF A SAINT Now Open – An addition to the permanent Papal exhibit Celebrating the Lives and Deaths of the Popes Inspired by the April 27, 2014 canonization mass at the Vatican that elevated Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII to saints, the Museum opens a new permanent section of its Celebrating the Lives & Deaths of the Popes exhibit entitled “The Making of a Saint” on June 1, 2016. The new addition to the popular exhibit offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the process of becoming a saint, from beatification to canonization, and features new papal artifacts as well as a special collection of Saint John Paul II memorabilia, including an authentic 1982 Range Rover “Popemobile” used by Saint John Paul II in the 1980s during his tour of the United Kingdom.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HOUSTON HIGH SOCIETY: THE PORTRAITS OF FRANZ X. WINTERHALTER Apr 17 - Aug 14, 2016 Law Building, Second Floor , 1001 Bissonnet Franz Xaver Winterhalter, the 19th century’s most renowned portraitist of European aristocracy, captured the elegance and opulence of his distinguished sitters with an unrivaled brilliance. The comprehensive exhibition High Society: The Portraits of Franz X. Winterhalter

presents a selection of these canvases, complemented by select items of clothing by sought-after fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth and several of Worth’s contemporaries. This major survey features works drawn from public, private, and royal collections around the world.

The German-born Winterhalter (1805–1873) gained popularity in Paris and became the preferred portraitist of

England’s Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and his services were eventually in much demand throughout Europe. He was celebrated for his ability to capture likenesses and for his superb rendering of textures and fashionable details.

Although many of Winterhalter’s iconic portraits of European nobility predate the entry of couturier Worth (1825–1895) into the field of fashion, their

client lists among elegant women of the European courts overlapped. High Society showcases about 45 of Winterhalter’s magnificent paintings, along with glamorous evening gowns and other couture garments from the period.

Houston Restaurant Weeks in the largest annual fundraiser for America’s largest food bank. Planned by volunteers, HRW donates 100% of the funds raised to the Houston Food Bank. Participating restaurants make donations to the Food Bank based upon how many brunches, lunches and dinners they sell during the event. The event includes Harris, Galveston and Montgomery County restaurants. One hundred percent of the donations raised from restaurants in these counties will go directly to their local area food banks. The Galveston County Food Bank and Montgomery County Food Bank are part of the Houston Food Bank’s Partner Distribution Organizations (PDOs).

The Houston Food Bank provides food to these smaller food banks, which in turn distribute the food to hunger relief charities in a portion of HFB’s service area. The Houston Food Bank certifies that their PDOs meet Feeding America standards.

Houston Restaurant Weeks was established in 2003 by Cleverley Stone, host of “The Cleverley Show,” a food talk radio program on CBS Sports Radio 650/KIKK-AM in Houston, Texas and food segment contributor to Houston’s Fox 26 Morning News for the past eight and one half years. To date, HRW has raised over $7.6 million to fight hunger in Houston, and has provided almost 23 million meals to neighbors in need through the Houston Food Bank. The HRW team of volunteers donate their time and resources to produce the event so that 100% of the donations raised go directly to the Houston Food Bank.
