EVEN MORE SCIENCE CAMPS AT SYNAPSE SCHOOL

This year we are teaming up with Synapse School in Menlo Park (bordering RWC). Synapse is an independent elementary/middle school that offers an advanced academic curriculum fully integrated with social & emotional learning. 10 students per camp.

GALILEO’S INVENTIONS NEW Grades 2nd-5th & 6th-8th (Plus one Girl’s Only Class) with Synapse School Galileo’s discoveries marked a counterpoint in the world’s understanding of the structure of the universe. Learn about the different views about the earth and the sun and how the scientific method and technology affect what we know about our physical world. Through hands-on activities, students will discover the ways by which scientists measure the speed of light, gravity, scale and distances of planets, the moon, the sun, and all the other stars in our universe. If aliens exist in other universes, what would they know about life on earth? Students will also learn about current issues and discoveries of the universe, including the Big bang, Dark Energy, and possibly the existence of other universes. THOMAS EDISON’S INVENTIONS NEW Grades 2nd-5th & 6th-8th with Synapse School Edison’s professional career represents the turning point from the lab inventor to lab entrepreneur! Inspired by Edison’s life and works, students will build-to-learn simulations of Edison’s inventions. There will be two parts in the curriculum—BUILD (simulating Edison inventions) and DESIGN (integrating design-thinking), where students will build/design inventions relevant to the 21st century. Students will learn to observe, document, and analyze their hands-on experiences and connect these with applied mechanical engineering concepts and processes; the Edison process of experimentation and invention; and how failure builds new knowledge. with Freshi Media www.freshimedia.com This is a beginning digital filmmaking class. The program begins with a well-known children’s story or nursery rhythm that the young participants can relate to. Together, the group chooses the story they want to film. They next learn to convert the story into a visual storyboard series. Using basic cameras and editing software, they are led through a cinematic process from pre-production, production and post-production and, at the end of the program, they complete an original short film based on their chosen and familiar children’s story. 10.341

with Freshi Media www.freshimedia.com The Pirate Movie starts with a completed action-adventure script that challenges the young filmmakers to integrate some simple special effects into their digital film. Adding to the film’s theatricality, they may bring props and costumes from home to heighten the authenticity of the film, although, basic costumes and props are provided by the program. Using basic video cameras and editing software, they take on the various key roles of the filmmaking process – those of director, editor, producer, and actors. They produce the script, as written, and complete a digital short film to be screened on the last day of class for families and friends. The final film is posted on the Freshi website at www.freshimedia.com and/or can be downloaded on a personal thumb drive by the participants.

with Freshi Media www.freshimedia.com This class begins with a completed script, allowing the participants to immediately get into the substance of a project in small groups. From a book of scripts, the group decides on the genre of film they want to produce: comedy, drama, sci-fi, action adventure or horror. The group begins with creating the storyboards for their film. Using basic video cameras and editing software, they produce the film, integrating simple special effects, sound effects and a musical score that is specific to the theme of their film. They learn camera angles, film etiquette and vocabulary, as well as how to use digital film tools. These learned skills should translate outside of the class to their home video camera and computer so they can continue with their digital storytelling after the class is over. The final class will premiere their movie for the benefit of family and friends – a fun and interactive way to wrap a film production! $187 / $207 NR 8-12yrs

SKYHAWKS MULTI-SPORT

SKYHAWKS BEGINNING GOLF NEW Age 5-9 For more information, please visit www.skyhawks.com Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes through proper technique and refinding the essential skills of the game. As we know, golf is a challenging and lifelong sport, so young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals of form, swinging, putting, and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system to its curriculum. Developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy & effective transition onto the golf course. No need to bring your own clubs, all equipment is provided. For safety reasons we utilize special helmets for all campers and keep the instructor to camper ratio for this program very low, resulting in limited ability. As a result these programs fill up quickly. All participants receive a t-shirt and a merit award. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 8:1 Participants should bring appropriate clothing, two snacks, a water bottle, running shoes and sunscreen. Code
