Your artist is inside.

It’s a New Year and a big one for Pratt Fine Arts Center as we are celebrating our 40th anniversary! A milestone such as this offers opportunity to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished in our proud history. What started as a small city program has evolved into a multifaceted resource at the heart of a thriving arts community. How cool is that?! You may have noticed that we are rocking a whole new look. We wanted our 40th anniversary to be a celebration of the future. That’s why we decided kick it off with a visual lift — a symbol that Pratt is moving forward with new energy and fresh ideas. I am really proud of our new logo and messaging. It reflects our core belief that there’s a creative spirit inside all of us, and that art offers us all a window into our meaning, our purpose, and an honest connection to who we are. For 40 years, we’ve offered unrestricted access and passionate support for personal creative discovery, in honor of a man devoted to creating opportunity for all to reach their full potential. At Pratt, our door is always open. Come on in.

Hot glass casting classes encourage beginning and returning students to work together to create outstanding sculptures by ladling molten glass into sand. Explore the ancient art of creating sand molds and how to use materials including plaster, steel, and found objects.

Alter the shape and/or surface texture of glass using tools and processes that don’t rely upon heat. This includes cutting, grinding, carving, engraving, polishing and sandblasting – all of which provide opportunities for artists to resolve aesthetic and functional issues.

Pratt Artist 14

Interview with Priscilla Dobler by Heather Olson Priscilla Dobler is a visual artist who was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Her work explores the critical issues of identity and construction in a globalized society through her installations, sculptures, performances, film and fabric. Using her environmental surroundings, childhood memories, and collaborations with family members, she reconstructs objects that are symbolic representations of the different cultures in which she identifies with. Functional objects are stripped down to their basic fundaments to reinterpret their meaning through new methods of construction. Themes addressed in her works are the tensions of personal struggle with alienation, borders, social inequality and juxtapositions within architectural spaces. At what age did you first start making art? What were some of your earliest experiences with making things? When I was five years old my mother bought me my first 102 Crayola Crayon box set and some drawing paper. I had never seen so many shades and varieties of colors, and I was beyond excited. The smells of those crayons melting in my sweaty palms as I drew are some of my earliest memories of making abstract

landscapes for my mom, mostly just experimenting with color combinations. However, it wasn’t until I was nine years old when my grandma Ruby took me to my first painting class in Tacoma, WA. After realizing how much I enjoyed art and art history my grandparents gave me my first 35mm camera when I was 10 years old, and from there I just experimented with drawings, oil and watercolor paintings, paper collages and photography.

“This is a project I’ve been wanting to build for over four years and I would not have been able to complete this task if it wasn’t for my scholarship...”

Traduccion Oral, 2013-current, popular wood, cotton thread and audio/video projection

What are you currently working on and enjoying? I am currently working on a woven television that will have audio and video projected onto the piece. It’s called Mass Culture and it’s based on multiple YouTube clips that represent what it means to be Mexican American. I have also gone back to painting and am really enjoying the process of mixing colors.

Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration in foundations of building materials: 2x4, rebar and bricks. I’m also obsessed with Moorish architecture, the history of wallpaper, ceramic tiles, and Renaissance art.

Tell us about your scholarship from Pratt. How has it helped you to further your creative process? I was awarded the Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship, which provided me with a well-equipped wood shop, classes with talented art instructors, and the opportunity to work in a creative

La Cocina, 2016, popular wood, cotton thread and audio/video projection

environment. With my scholarship money I was able to rent the wood shop to complete the wood cutting and assembling of my woven kitchen, La Cocina. This is a project I’ve been wanting to build for over four years and I would not have been able to complete this task if it wasn’t for my scholarship which also provided me with a material stipend.

What would you consider to be your dream project? My dream project would be collaborating with my two favorite artists: Petah Coyne and Yinka Shonibare.

Where can we see your work? I will be showing at Kittredge Gallery for an Alumni Show in Tacoma, WA from

La Cocina, 2016, popular wood, cotton thread and audio/video projection

January 17 – February 18, and Columbia City Gallery in Seattle with Pratt January 11 – February 18, 2017.

What are you looking forward to making in the future? I recently started a woven livingroom installation, and I am extremely excited about finally being able to start this project after three years of trying to figure out a place to work. It’s going to be 18-hour days, and four to five months of wood cutting and weaving in my future.

What advice might you have for someone who wants to start a career as an artist? Do it! However, be prepared to sacrifice and dedicate long hours in the studio.

What would you say to someone who wants to apply for a scholarship at Pratt? I highly encourage applying for a scholarship at Pratt. The Edwin T Pratt scholarship provided me with a well-equipped wood shop, professional instructors and a faculty of individuals who were extremely helpful, encouraging and knowledgeable. All around it’s been a very positive community-based environment to produce work and develop as an artist.

What keeps you going when you are having a hard time with a project? Whenever I’m struggling with a project I take two steps: 1) force myself to work through it or, 2) work on something else until the solutions presents itself.

The Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship Program is supported by the Seattle Foundation, the Robert Chinn Foundation and Columbia City Gallery.

Tuition Assistance 27

Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

www.pratt.org/classes/tuition-assistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

The next Tuition Assistance deadlines are: q Application period open January 9 – 19, 2017 q For classes that start between February 22– April 10, 2017 Applications may be dropped off at Pratt’s front desk, emailed to info@pratt.org or mailed to: 1902 South Main Street, Seattle, WA 98144 Attn: Tuition Assistance.
