Weaver’s Nest Community Centre

Location: Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

Brief: Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala is known for its people and culture. The traditional Kerala type saree, made from the famous “Kasavu” silk is nowadays being manufactured in powerlooms in large number which outperforms traditional handloom methods incurring heavy loss and negligence to the weaver community. The design is thus aimed to favor, empower and uplift the weaver community by designing a community centre specially dedicated for the weavers, involving public en gagement, teaching, community interaction, live crafts and fabric studies, in vernacular style to create employment, generate revnue and spread awareness about traditional techniques.....

FORM DEVELOPMENT

The site is situated in Pallachal which isabout 17-18 km from Thiruvananthapuram city centre, and can be accessed via the Trivandrum-Nagercoil Highway/NH-47. The site lies in the right hand side of the HIghway and is surrounded by forest and local dwellers.

Among dwellers, many are farm owners and do farming, and a miniscule population are into Fabrics and Handlooms.

CONCEPT

The buildings have been designed in the native vernacular style of architecture prominent in Kerala. There is no fixed visual axes instead the circulation design gives a sense of community awareness by incorporation open spaces which act as social interactive spaces.

The site sits on a sloped profile which helps in provideng many visual axes.

The individual building designs are made in the form resembling the Agraharams. Some open areas act as courtyards facilitating wind circulation and temperature.

The site is around 8000 sq.m and has a slope profile consisting of 12 contours each at 1 m height. The total height difference between the highest and lowest contour is 12 m, the lowest contour being 12m below road level.

The massing starts with organizing the public places and placing them accordingly first to facilitate circulation.

The Gallery, Exhibition Area, open spaces are massed along with the main Handloom block.

The massing of the Lobby, Gallery & Exhibition, Library, mini OAT and Main Handloom block is made along with social spaces for community interaction, placed accordingly following the sloping terrain profile of the site.

The gallery is designed in accordance with the native Kerala type architecture. A prominant part of the design is the central courtyard which cools the building. The gallery is mostly used for fabric exhibitions and marketing.

THE HANDLOOM

THE HEART OF THE DESIGN

The design aims to empower and uplift the weaver’s community which is diminishing slowly to mechanical production. Not only it empowers the community, but also generate revenueand awareness among us general citizens, thus bringing back alive the old handmade methods with means of live craft, exhibition, and marketing.

The building has a geometric dimension of 18x34 metres, having a capacity to house almost 30 handlooms, with an option to increase capacity upto 40-45 handlooms. The structure is a blend of modern and tradional design, the walls being built with concrete, the front open wall seperated by temple style columns cast in RCC, the large span wooden truss framework and the terracota roof tile shillings..w

Bus Stop

Vernacular Architecture

Location: Shantiniketan, West Bengal

Brief: To design a bus stop in Vernacular techniques along with general accessories and department stores for the local dwellers and others. Destined to be at Shantiniketan, the birthplace of renowned poet and writer, Rabindranath Tagore, the design tends to celebrate cultural legacy by applying vernacular techniques, like the distinct Bangla Chala roof style.

The site is located in the near outskirts of Shantiniketan, West Bengal, on a link road connecting Bolpur with Rasaipur. The surrounding context consists of local dwellers, some general shops, farms and certain small institution buildings.

The road connecting the site is a busy regional street which experiences a certain level of traffic with no stoppage for regional commuters.

Givren the social context, the site is situated in Bolpur, Shantiniketan which is the birthplace of the renowned poet, writer and artist Rabindranath Tagore.

The design incorporates the famous Bangla Chala roof, which has a distinct design and functionality. A prominent style of West Bengal, it celebrates the traditional cultural legacy and preserves the heritage.

1. The top part of the roof is adorned and made with terracota resting on a wooden framework.

2. The wooden framework supporting the top half of the roof mount, and acts and helps in cross ventilation.

3. The bottom roof is also made of terracota resting on a wooden base.

4. The wooden framework which supports the bottom half of the roofis a designed and engineered to support the rest of the upper half. Four columns make it stand on ground.

Location: Gurgaon, Haryana

Brief: Home is more than just a physical structure; it’s a sanctuary, a place where we find comfort, security, and belonging. It’s a place where we can let down our guard, knowing that we are shielded from the outside world’s uncertainties. Within its walls, we find solace from the challenges and stresses of daily life, allowing us to recharge and rejuvenate. Home is also a canvas for self-expression. Through decoration, arrangement, and personal touches, we transform a mere building into a reflection of our personalities and values.

In this project we design a private residence of a designer and artist, with an attached studio hall.
