NEED OF THE PROJECT

AIM

Number of KVs near major cities of Kerala

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is a system of central Government schools in India that are instituted under the Ministry of education, Government of India.

To design a school with built and unbuilt spaces which create a healthy interactive environment and motivate children to study, according to the norms of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan at the proposed site at Ulliyeri, Calicut.

As of august 2021, it has 1,248 schools in India, and three abroad in Moscow, Tehran and Kathmandu.

OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION

KVs believes in imparting knowledge/values and nurturing the talent, enthusiasm and creativity of its students for seeking excellence through high-quality educational endeavors.

1. Detailed study of Kendriya Vidyalayas

It is one of the world’s largest chains of schools and also the largest chain of schools in India is controlled by 25 regional offices and 05 ZIETs (Zonal Institute of Education and Training) under kVs (HQ).

KVs are affiliated with CBSE.

METHODOLOGY

Calicut, the third-largest city of Kerala, only has 2 KVs while Kannur has 6.

In Kerala, there are 38 KVs. Government plans to open a new kv in Calicut in Ulliyeri.

Of India or State Governments, on the conditions that required suitable land, as per KVS norms is provided free of cost on a lease / permanent grant basis and also temporary accommodation is provided to run the Vidyalaya till KVS constructs its school building on the land provided.

Having a total area of 360 sq. M(36*10m2) Roof is a curved truss supported by steel frame columns.

COURTYARDS The secondary block have courtyard which is provided because the height difference in the site.

All the floor is having toilets for the students - girls and boys separately with disable toilets.

Classrooms can accommodate up to 50 students ata time.

Have all basicfacilities for aclassroom.

AUDITORIUM &PASSAGES The auditorium have a common passage from the main Entrance of the building to the 10th block.

The junction leads to upper lab blocks ; 10th block.

CLASS ROOMS the 11th & 12th class room consistof 40 students with 2 sections from both ( science & commerce). the classes are provided with plastic chairs with 3 students in 1 desk.

OPEN COURTYARD

CORRIDOR

Open courtyard in primary block is also utilized as auditorium, which can accommodate 800 students at a time. They have a small raised platform act as a stage.

Primary block have a semi open corridor which gives a good air movement within the building. The partition wall is of 1.5 M height, which is safe for the students.

SECTION AA’ FORM DEVELOPMENT In conventional building forms, it will ne hard for light and ventilation to enter the building and reach it’s centre portions.

Cut outs can help to enhance the light and ventilation inside.

Also it increases the area of external surface for light and ventilation to enter.

When thinking about the arrangements of class rooms, it can be seen that, corner class rooms receives more light and ventilations that the ones trapped in between two class rooms.

To avoid this, two class rooms are grouped together and a cut out comes after each set of two class rooms. So this trapped in the middles class rooms are avoided here.

Courtyards between two raws of classroom is extended towards this cut out, enhancing the quality of courtyards and creating well lit and ventilated bays of courtyards for children to use.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN IN SCHOOLS Biophilic design is an approach to architecture and design that seeks to connect people with nature and the natural environment. The goal of biophilic design is to create spaces that support human health and well-being by incorporating natural elements, such as sunlight, greenery, and fresh air, into the built environment.

Use natural materials: Incorporate natural materials such as wood, stone, and natural fibers in the design of the school to create a sense of warmth and connection with nature.

Integrate plants: Add plants and greenery to the learning environment to improve air quality, reduce stress, and boost productivity. Plants can also be used to create visual interest and act as a natural divider between spaces.

Create outdoor learning spaces: Provide outdoor learning spaces such as gardens or natural play areas to encourage students to connect with nature and incorporate hands-on learning experiences.

Use natural colors and patterns: Incorporate natural colors and patterns, such as earthy tones or floral patterns, to create a sense of calm and tranquility in the learning environment.

Incorporate natural light: Use natural light as much as possible to reduce the need for artificial lighting and promote a connection with the outdoors.

Large windows, skylights, and light shelves can all be used to maximize natural light.

The Green School is a private, international, and sustainable school that was established in 2008.

The school’s campus covers approximately 20 acres and is located in a natural setting surrounded by rice fields and rainforest.

The Green School, a giant laboratory built by PT Bambu, is located on a sustainable campus straddling both sides of the Ayung River in Sibang Kaja, Bali, within a lush jungle with native plants and trees growing alongside sustainable organic gardens.

The campus is powered by a number of alternative energy sources, including a bamboo sawdust hot water and cooking system, a hydro-powered vortex generator and solar panels.

The school’s buildings were constructed using locally sourced, natural materials such as bamboo, thatch, and mud walls.

• The essential skills of reading, writing, mathematics, and science are developed to a high degree.

The school incorporates biophilic design elements such as open-air classrooms, natural ventilation, living walls, and natural lighting.

• Curriculum includes the evolution from nature to ecology to environment to sustainability, and learning by getting hands dirty.

Campus buildings include classrooms, gym, assembly spaces, faculty housing, offices, cafes and bathrooms.

The campus also features organic gardens, and composting facilities.

• The geographical and cultural context of doing this in Bali are recognized.

A range of architecturally significant spaces from large multi-storey communal gathering places to much smaller classrooms are a feature of the campus.

Environmentalists and designers John and Cynthia Hardy wanted to motivate communities to live sustainably.

Local bamboo, grown using sustainable methods, is used in innovative and experimental ways that demonstrate its architectural possibilities.

Part of that effort was to show people how to build with sustainable materials, namely bamboo.

The result is a holistic green community with a strong educational mandate that seeks to inspire students to be more curious, more engaged and more passionate about the environment and the planet.

They established the Green School, and its affiliates: the Meranggi Foundation, which develops plantations of bamboo plants through presenting bamboo seedlings to local rice farmers; and PT Bambu, a for-profit design and construction company that promotes the use of bamboo as a primary building material, in an effort to avoid the further depletion of rainforests.

FEATURES Open-Air Classrooms: The classrooms at the Green School are designed to be openair, with no walls or windows. This allows students to feel more connected to the natural environment and helps to promote a sense of calm and relaxation. The classrooms are covered by large bamboo roofs that provide shade and protection from the rain

Environmentally friendly bamboo is the primary structural material and other support by using alang alang thatch, volcanic stone, rammed earth and traditional Balinese mud wall.

Indoor-Outdoor Flow: The buildings are designed with a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, with many classrooms and common areas connected to the outdoors. This helps to create a sense of continuity between the inside and outside spaces, and encourages students to spend time outside.

Bamboo Architecture: The buildings at the Green School are constructed almost entirely from bamboo, which is a sustainable and renewable resource.

The bamboo is treated to prevent insect infestations and to make it more durable. The bamboo structures are designed to be earthquake-resistant and can withstand winds of up to 200 km/h.

The Green School features living walls that are covered in a variety of plants, which help to filter the air and regulate the temperature. The living walls also provide a natural aesthetic that is calming and relaxing.

Green Roofs: The buildings feature green roofs, which are covered in vegetation and provide insulation and natural cooling. The green roofs also help to filter rainwater and provide a habitat for wildlife.

Shade structures: The school has many shade structures throughout the campus, such as pergolas and shade sails, which provide shelter from the sun and allow for outdoor activities even in hot weather.
