EMIRATES HEALTHCARE’s MONTHLY NEWLETTER EHG’s Training and Development Team continues to extend it’s Continuing Nursing Education Courses as it concludes the 2nd wave of diabetes education lectures for nurses.

The 5-hour CME course entitled, “Diabetes Prevention and Early Detection: What Nurses Can Do?” was successfully held last September 26, 2017 at the Administration and Logistic Office, Al Quoz.

Attended by healthcare professionals from different entities, the speaker, our own Clinical Educator, Ryan Mark Rebeca, seeks to intensify nurses’ involvement in diabetes management zooming in on health education as a tool to prevent diabetes and its complications.

The day was packed with a lot of activities to facilitate exchange of insights and included recognition of very keen participants.

Klinika Maharlika’s Janine Paula Barrantes came well-prepared as she aced the activities structured to ensure learning and integration to current practice.

Since the kick-off of this CNE opportunity, the Training & Development team has already been able to cater to 95 delightful and eager participants across the group.

❖ Scrub suits/gowns must be worn observing infection control standards. Review your unit policies specific to this guideline

❖ Hejabs: close-form type with no flowing ends

❖ Footwear: clinical areas – must enclose feet, clean and wellpolished; No slippers, or heels higher than 2 inches

❖ Colognes/perfumes may be used sparingly

❖ Make-up: Light and discreet; for positions without designated uniforms ❖ Keep hair clean and tidy. Emirates Healthcare Observes Islamic New Year Working as an expat has its pros and cons. Leaving our folks back home is really a bummer but then again, as they say, look for the silver lining. For instance, I am always excited to learn more about other traditions, religion and culture. We get to expand our perspective on certain areas of life.

Recently, UAE, together with most countries in the world celebrated the Arabic New Year or Hijri New Year. Here are some fast facts about the celebration: ❖ Celebrated last 21st of September, exact date varies depending on local moon-sighting or using astronomical calculations for new moon.

❖ It begins on the first day of the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram. ❖ The first Islamic year began in 622 AD with the emigration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijri. ❖ The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year and has 12 months but only 354 days. ❖ The Islamic New Year is usually celebrated with low-key religious events which is celebrated as an official public holiday. ❖ Hijri was not just a historical event, but continues to be an opportunity for introspection.

HR HINTS EMAIL ETIQUETTE Communication is key to the success of any organization; it is reflective of our work ethic as well as our personality. Thus, how we write emails to internal and external stakeholders is crucial. Below is a snap shot of the key components we must be mindful of when sending emails.

Concise and to the point – latest study conducted by Microsoft Corp. has revealed that since starting of 2000 or the beginning of the digital influence/age the attention span of humans has reduced from 12 to 8 seconds. So now our attention span is less than that of a Goldfish that has an attention span of 9 seconds!

Legal implications of what you write – in certain parts of the world what information you share or quote can land you in trouble. Therefore, be careful when sharing confidential information, salary or other details about your colleagues or company.

Dilemmas – we all face them in our daily work. If it is something that requires a detailed explanation or may cause misunderstanding, it is always advisable to pick up the phone and discuss.

Do not write or reply to emails when angry – you do not want to be considered by your co-workers or external stakeholders as a loose cannon so do not compose or reply to emails when you are angry or upset.

Don’t write emails as a Vendetta – do not write emails about in a manner that looks like you have something against a particular person or issue. The golden rule to remember here is if you are comfortable with what you wrote to be published in tomorrow morning’s paper on the front page, then go ahead and write it.

Bold and Font Color – it is against all etiquettes to write in CAPS, RED FONT or add numerous exclamation marks to make a point!!!

Subject- This is a great tool if it indicates what the email’s actual content is, however, if it fails to do so it just adds to the list of unread emails. Therefore, be precise and clear in the subject of your email.

Regularly Check Mail— If your work does not entail regular e-mail use, make it a habit to check your INBOX even your SPAM box/JUNK files atleast once a day. You don’t want to miss on an important announcement just because you failed to check your e-mail. “I haven't checked my e-mail yet.” is really not a convincing alibi.

Undeniably, the e-mail has been an important medium in our work today. It is easier, faster and provides more efficient ways of communication. Make the most from it and let it be a weapon for our success.

LEARN THE LANGUAGE Deciding to work in a foreign country entails a lot of adaptation and this includes learning the language. Probably, a major roadblock for expats is the pressure of conversing seamlessly to a local . So let’s start the learning process right by taking off that pressure, picking-up key conversation starters and take it from there. What should managers do when one of their employees wants to negotiate a personalized deal?

Should they grant the deal?

We live in an era where just about any product or service can be tailored to fit customers’ needs and desires. Organizations are frequently doing the same for employees, providing customized work arrangements, or what are often called idiosyncratic deals or i-deals. Denise Rousseau originally introduced the term to describe unique work arrangements negotiated by employees and tailored to their individual needs. The key word is unique, as these deals by definition apply to only one person within a team or the larger work environment and might include unique financial arrangements (bonuses, benefits), flexible work arrangements (flexible workhours, working from home), and changes in workload.

Over the past 10 years, research has shown that such deals are a good way to motivate and bind employees to the organization. Moreover, they boost employee self-esteem. As a result, employees are more committed and put more effort into their work. Sounds like a manager’s dream, right? Unfortunately, this is not always the case. These deals can easily turn into a manager’s nightmare if they challenge equality and fairness on teams. Singling out one person by granting them tailor-made working conditions, if not managed carefully, can easily be perceived as favouritism. This can trigger envy and counterproductive behaviour.

What should managers do when one of their employees wants to negotiate a personalized deal? Should they grant the deal? If so, how can they manage any repercussions and ensure co-workers accept the arrangement?

What is the employee asking for and why? Not all ideals are equal. For example, granting an employee additional financial privileges can be tricky, especially

especially because co-workers might easily view financial deals as favouritism. Such deals should be considered only when the employee is an absolute star at work and asks to be rewarded for their exceptional performance. If this performance can be objectively proven to others, it creates a sense of legitimacy and can even serve to motivate coworkers to perform better in order to qualify for a similar deal in the future. More practical i-deals that address specific individual needs (rather than providing rewards) can be easier to grant without creating a sense of unfairness. (e.g. health condi tions, family issues, etc.)

Do I feel comfortable communicating this deal to other team members? If not, chances are that others will find the deal suspect. In this case, it could be tempting to grant the deal and just keep it under wraps.

But this would be a difficult strategy to defend, and secrets rarely stay hidden. Nancy Day’s research on pay secrecy shows that being asked not to discuss pay with co-workers is by no means a guarantee that employees will refrain from talking about it. Moreover, it’s hard to maintain secrecy when the deal is highly visible (for example, a team member arriving and leaving whenever they please). If and when others find out, it will be particularly challenging to convince them that you weren’t playing favourites and to regain their trust.

Are there any structural barriers? Ideals can be tricky to implement on a team where employees are constantly coordinating and working together. In these interdependent environments, i-deals can create a burden for other team members . For example, if one person negotiates a reduced workload, the rest of the team has to cover for them. To solve some of these issues, the decision of whether to grant the deal could be shifted from the manager to the team.

The outcome is more likely to be perceived as fair if the group decides together — plus the team will be in the best position to find solutions for any complications the deal creates.

If you don’t thoughtfully grant and manage i-deals, they can backfire. So tread carefully to avoid fostering malicious envy, not to mention conflicts, complaints, and counterproductive work behavior, on your team.

But keep in mind that not all envy is bad. Some of your team members may experience what we call benign envy, meaning they perceive someone’s ideal as motivational. They might try to perform better in an effort to obtain a similar deal or reassurance that the organization is willing to take care of them should a personal issue arise. These are, of course, positive side effects. After all, every manager wants a team of highly motivated employees

As a company genuinely looking over its employees’ wellbeing we would like to advocate cardiovascular health among our colleagues not only during this day but all year round.

World Heart Day is celebrated on 29 September each year. World leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number one killer.

Created by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.

Emirates Healthcare is not new to these endeavours as it continues to promote employee wellness activities. Previously, under the initiative of our group CEO, Mr. Pramod Balakrishnan and group Corporate Human Resources Director, Ms. Smita Melling, a number of EHG employees enjoyed a one a kind cycling experience through GFX Dubai.
