Once the data was collected for each of the AWC the following process were applied for each of these spaces. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Each of the area was sketched (almost to scale) Images taken during field work helped to identify area that require design interventions. All the elements(in the data collected) for each of the AWCs were mapped out in the rough sketches. The existing items and use of space mapped. Any missing element or requirement identified for each of the AWC Redesigning the spaces to allow maximum utilization of these spaces . Segregation of areas within the limited space to ● Child care area (sit, rest, non formal study) ● Area for collaboration (play, draw, eat meals) ● Health care space for ASHA worker and mothers and infants ● Kitchen area + daily meal storage ● Washrooms, hand wash and disposing area ● Storage are for supplements and excess packaging material Once mapped out, the personas in the space identified and colour coded to help identify the areas. Redesigning spaces with additions or subtractions, different placements of furnitures and space saving use of mats for these spaces. Along with providing individual solutions for each of the AWCs, there is also an urgent requirement for collective solutions for the AWCs. The collective solutions/suggestions will be later added to this document.

The meals that arrive daily need a good storage space till consumed. Secured space to avoid contamination.
The storage space used to store item required on a daily basis (books, play toys, sheets, posters, utensils, etc)
Hand washing area. Can be created temporarily with buckets or taps ďŹ xed.

Areas to place furniture enabling maximum utilization of space.
The area is most importantly used for non formal learning. The area also sits and allows children to take nap.
The AWC are left with excess packaging materials and other items not daily used. Those items can be stored in these spaces. Dustbins or disposable cans are important. Helps keep the area clean.
This area most importantly allows the AWC to have a little extra space. Since most spaces lack play area, the buer area can serve the purpose. Having interactive mats, play area. Also for adhoc cases the area can be used by the AWC worker or helper to attend to children.
Given below are individual solution for the AWC. Please refer to the images of the spacem, personas marked and the colour code for the areas . The issues have been mentioned followed by design proposals for the area .
AMBEDKARNAGAR

Best utilization of the rooms (Child care room and Health care room) 2nd room require fans and light,. Very less ventilation. It can be used as both sitting area and check up area. Almirah or storage shelves to store items The health check up room inside gives women privacy and makes space less chaotic to voice concern or request information. 1st room walls can be used with children posters 2nd room can have the required posters and information for the pregnant woman and mothers with infants. Small buffer space in 1st room, will allow the AWC worker and helper to create space for collaboration for the children. Smallest spaces among all AWCs. 1 room. 2 storage area.

AWC worker and ASHA worker share common space within one room .

Main room has bulky sitting arrangement taking up most space.

Kitchen room is being used for storage.
5.
Sitting area for children is very limited.

No space to rest /play on days there is ASHA worker working. Same space needs to be divided.

ASHA worker, AWC worker, helper, Visitors children all need to be accommodated in the same on such days.

Best utilization of the rooms (Child care room and Health care room) Main room used for child care and buer space. The kitchen area (now room 2) can be used to set up small table and chair for ASHA care worker and mothers. Will also give the woman some privacy. Separate room will ensure children are not distracted by presence of visitors. Room 2 now can be used to store meals one one side and supplements on the other. Better utilization of storage are by shifted all unwanted materials from the kitchen area and stored in the storage space. Area near the staircase can also be used to store some items. Place for hand wash and dustbin. Setting up the tables and chairs will leave space for one bench in the main room for the visitors to be used. The Shelves used to store play and toys and medicine storage space shifted to the room 2

One large space, however no entirely utilised.

Best utilization of the large space needed. The ASHA work area created next to the store will allow privacy and not distract the children. The teaching and the play area is uses the maximum space giving children plenty of area to learn, play and rest. Given the space, the external storage materials need to be arranged (Red area) The remaining spaces marked for storage will for the AWC The kitchen area lacks shelves. Continuous shelves or racks for storage will create more space. Attic is needed given the small space. Furnitures required, especially tables. Dustbin to be placed when locals are throwing garbage. Hand wash area with bucket and water, since there is no pipeline. Table/shelf for meals storage. Mostly being kept on the oor where children are playing.
SALEHA NAGAR Issues identiďŹ ed with the AWC: 1.
This AWC has 3 rooms, 2 of which is used mostly for storage.

Not well ventilated. No windows in the 2nd and 3rd room.

Lot of storage and packing materials that require cleaning and disposal.

3rd room is kept in an unorganized manner, hence rendering the room almost useless for any work. Also , room is the darkest. Adjoined small opening area has light.

Best utilization of all the available rooms within the small space. 1st room is dedicated for the children, since this room has the maximum amount of natural light. Room 2 health care are. There is already a bed in this room, hence can be used. Allowing privacy and less interference with children. With table and chair set up. Basic storage can be used in the room (Medicinned in the shelves, basic supplements) Room 3 requires unwanted materials to be removed or moved to the storage space next to it. All rooms require good light source and the 2nd room requires a fan. Since limited ventilation, the main door needs to be kept open at all times. Hand wash area next to the toilet can be set up, with dustbin right outside the main door for disposables. Walls need learning posters and information posters. Storage racks required since shelf construction with make rooms smaller. Storage area needs to be segregated as per storage solutions.
HEERA KHANA Issues identified with the AWC: 1.
This AWC has 1 major room. AWC is sharing space with a woman’s school.
2.
Well lit and ventilated space, however URGENT NEED of FANS.
3.
No storage shelves or attic, one almirah and tables used.
4.
No partition, same space is used my AWC worker and ASHA worker.
5.
Only one table. Required more tables. AWC has chairs, but are being used for storage.
6.
Bed is present, however, unused.
7.
Very limited posters. If present,kept at a height no suitable for children’s line of sight.
HEERA KHANA Design Proposal for the space
1.
Best utilization of one room space.
2.
The room requires temporary partition, so that it can be used later.
3.
Space needs storage units, especially almirah, cupboards or racks.
4.
FANS are required. Plenty of natural light.
5.
Shelves are very important for for the space. The temporary partition can be created by placing a Shelf/ rack in the marked area. This will allow some privacy to the non formal education area, however, temporary set up allow the entire space to available to use if needed.
6.
The ASHA worker space has a table, similar table required for the AWC worker.
7.
Posters are very limited in the space. Usage of wall as per wall design proposal.

MOHALAGUNJ Issues identiďŹ ed with the AWC: 1.
This AWC has 2 proper rooms. However, Room 2 is barely used. The area is pacious, however mostly used for storage purpose.
2.
The storage area need sorting according to daily use items and items not regularly used.
The AWC has used the kitchen space wisely. There is also a washbasin in the AWC along with 2 toilets.
MOHALAGUNJ Design Proposal for the space
1.
The 2nd room need sorting of storage materials. AWC has shelves and attic that need to used by sorting items in daily use and excess packing material which can be shifted to the attic.
2.
The passage with the kitchen can be used as well for storage by placing shelves.
3.
The ASHA work space can utilise the use of bed, stools chairs and tables already present in the second room. Needs to be arranged.
4.
The bed is being used for storage, can be used for mothers and visitors to sit along with chairs in Room 2.
5.
The main room, which is the ďŹ rst room after entrance has good amount of space for the AWC children. Table for AWC worker and chair required.

QAZI GULLY Issues identified with the AWC: 1.
This AWC has 2 bigger rooms along with 2 storage space. However area not efficiently utilized.
2.
The 1st room has carpet and low stools, but no tables and chairs.
3.
Biggest room , though well ventilated lacks posters and wall hangings (space used for election booth )
4.
No storage shelves or attic. Most items stored or heaped on tools and tables.
5.
Wall painting worn off.
QAZI GULLY Design Proposal for the space 1.
This AWC is being used during election meeting and poll booths, hence most changes can be temporary. 2. The 1st room is the ASHA work space allowing privacy. Tables chairs and cupboard required for this area 3. The bigger space need fans and wall painting. Cupboards and tables to store daily use items. 4. All the store spaces needs to be cleaned and one of them used as a makeshift kitchen. 5. Supplement storage, and meals can be kept in the room . 6. Wall needs to painted 7. AWC worker will be requiring tables and chairs along with a cupboard. 8. Since there is availability of two storage room: Store Room 1: Mid day meals, nutritional supplements, medicine storage, Stationary, Games, toys, books. Store room 2: Any extra furniture, storage boxes, Balamrutham packages, cartons. This will allow daily need items to be stored and stacked in a single space.
JAMALI BASTI Issues identiďŹ ed with the AWC: 1.
The space that has been rented, is likely to change location .
2.
The AWC is not being able to make full set up in this area given that there is a chance of shiftingthe AWC.
3.
The AWC space has already been changed in the past, hence a lot of people stopped availing the services from this location.
JAMALI BASTI
Design Proposal for the space
1.
The AWC has two fairly spaced well lit rooms of which either can be used for AWC work and ASHA work.
2.
Since Room2 is a little bit more spacious, can be used for AWC work.
3.
The visitors and ASHA worker can have a setup in Room 1.
4.
One good factor about this space is the availability of a play area which is also used for daily meals.
5.
There is a water storage area next to the toilet. Can be used for hand washing area.
6.
Kitchen area can be used for storage, allowing more space for the rooms.
7.
Mats are needed, since makeshift banners are used on the oors (though eective)
8.
Easily removable poster needed for the space
RISALA BAZAR
●
This AWC has identified and tried to use the space to its maximum potential. The walls have posters and shelves that are stocked with toys, games, playbooks.
●
Posters and study charts are nicely placed across the room at a children eyesight height.
●
The AWC has also segregated the space for ASHA workers AWC worker.
●
The storage space has also been used wisely with areas dedicated.
●
There is a hand wash area for the students.
●
Tables chairs beds and sofa all has been put to use.
The only changes required for the AWC is better usage of storage units. The AWC can stand as an example for other AWC in respect to best utilization of every available space and furniture that is available.
RISALA BAZAR
Design Proposal for the space As mentioned earlier, in regard to utilization of space the particular AWC has adopted good methods and applied eectively. Few of the suggestions: 1.
The second room that is being used as a store room can be used as the ASHA work space. It will give privacy to the mothers and also be more spacious. (current area is a little congested) . There is already a bed in the room, hence space can be used to storage (excess materials)
2.
The extended area of the room can be used for Storage of daily elements, including meals and supplements. Will require a table.
3.
There is already a small unite for storage of books and toys. It can be extended.
COLLECTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR THE SPACES IN AWC.
STORAGE SPACES One of the main issues identiďŹ ed across all AWC was unorganized storage. Even though AWCs have spaces or spare rooms, storage is not planned. STORAGE FOR DAILY ITEMS:
Storage unit
Storage unit and storage boxes. 1. This includes books, copies, stationary, playtoys, games, etc. Any small items that are regularly used. 2. For this kind of storage, shelves with boxes work best. 3. The boxes when labelled help identify or search for items much faster. 4. These units can be in any multiples, and if shelves are already there in the AWC, just the boxes are required. 5. The storage boxes can also be used to keep nutritional supplements. 6. These boxes are easily available in the market and come in dierent materials such as plastic or more sustainable alternatives such as cloth or jute. 7. Coloured boxes add to the vibrance of the room.
Storage box
STORAGE SPACES Other alternatives for storage are available readily in the market. Only a few AWC have the following. Can be purchased for all the AWC.
For bulkier items, that cannot easily ďŹ t into storage boxes, racks are the best option allowing more space to store. The racks also allow some items out of children's reach. Storage boxes like these can also bet ept in these shelves.
These vibrant and colourful cupboards are great alternatives for closed storage spaces.
For kitchen utensils storage, steel racks are a good alternative. Wooden tables or shelves are more likely to damage due to water or liquid spilled. Such steel rack also allow water to drain.
PLAY AREA Collaboration and group works develops team building skills, co-operative mentality, and communication skills.The interactive area as well as the sensory area in the classroom allows children to gather around and interact. Elements in the sensory area will have colourful walls, textures and tactile elements, craft materials. The interactive area will have manipulatives. Manipulatives, are physical tools of teaching, engaging students visually and physically with objects such as coins, blocks,puzzles, markers, etc. The use of manipulatives allows students to engage in discovery during the learning process.Interactive oor game mats not only create seating space, but acts as classroom play area. Interactive oor mats serve both the purpose of seating area as well as play are with learning. Shapes, colours, alphabets and games allow children to not only interact with their friends but engage is a physical activity.
Channapatna Toys from Karnataka region are a great for learning for the kids.
WALLS One of the most important aspects of the AWCs are the information posters, nutrition posters and contact numbers for the pregnant woman and their families. Along with this learning charts for children are also present in every AWC. For the best utilization of wall space: Most of the AWCs function in rented spaces, permanent posters on the wall will not be fruitful. Hanging posters will get rid of randomness of placement of the posters. As per the image, taking into consideration the line of sight for an adult and the children. Top : Information posters for parents. Middle: Study chart and play charts for the children. Bottom: Running backboard. Two of the AWC (Risala Bazar and Qazi Gully) has already implemented this eectively.
FURNITURES
All the AWCs have basic furnitures: Table, chairs, stools. Some AWC has benches, sofa and beds. However in most of the AWC, the furnitures are bulky are are often kept unutilized. This may be because of unorganized spaces. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
All AWC worker require a separate tables and chairs to cater to the mothers who visit. The AWC worker also has heaps of documents on the tables. Those can be kept in the closed cupboards. Circular seating allows space for better collaboration allowing the teacher to teach more eectively since one can move around in the spaces giving attention time individually. The same tables can also be used for oor seating area. The heights of these tables are be adjusted. ASHA workers also require a table and a chairs. Since the visitors are mostly accompanied by family , there is need to extra chairs in the seating arrangement. Including lightweight furniture instead of bulkier wood furnitures. Will be easily to move round the space. Temporary partition can be created with shelves in a room.
GENERIC SOLUTIONS Few vital things to ensue for all the AWCs
1.
Proper light connection. For AWCs lacking windows, all rooms must have a light source.
2.
Areas used by AWC, children and ASHA worked require a fan.
3.
Hand wash area. A water line can be fixed or have a temporary hand wash area with a good outlet to the drains.
4.
Dustbins. Locals often throw litter outside the AEC premise. Garbage bins will ensure proper disposal from for the AWC worker as well as the locals.
5.
Drinking water. Did not come across any filter in any of the AWCs.
Also, things that can be tried 6.
Identifiable landmark or boards with the name of the AWC along with the logo and contact details. The AWCs are not easily identifiable because most of them are rented spaces.
7.
Wall art or murals. This have strong impact on the AWC space. The images can be informative as well. .
