New whodunits with Wallander Kenneth Branagh returns on Sunday afternoons in December as Inspector Kurt Wallander for three new 90-minute whodunits from Masterpiece Mystery! The moody Swedish detective created by mystery writer Henning Mankell has famously lit the spark for today’s passionate interest in Scandinavian crime fiction. This new trio of programs airs Sundays at 2:00 p.m. (CT) and finds the Swedish cop trying to improve his disposition—in the face of torture killings, dashed romance, homicidal do-gooders, and a resentful grown-up daughter.

December Television Highlights Filmed over four years for Independent Lens, Garbage Dreams chronicles the lives of three teenage boys who were born into the trash trade and are growing up in the world’s largest garbage village, a ghetto located on the outskirts of Cairo. It is a world folded onto itself, an impenetrable labyrinth of narrow roadways camouflaged by trash; it is home to 60,000 “zaballeen,” Arabic for “garbage people.”

Johnny and His Musical Mates have entertained Manitoba audiences with old time music for more than sixty years. Often the band played five nights a week in Riverton, Arborg, Geysir, Hnausa, Gimli, Hodgson, and even Hecla.

Join us on the Beatles’ 1967 Magical Mystery Tour, a showcase for the Fab Four’s idiosyncratic sense of humor Produced at the peak of Beatlemania in 1967, Magical Mystery Tour is the least known of the various films starring the Beatles. It was arguably ahead of its time, with a mostly improvised and loosely plotted script, yet the film served as a showcase for six classic tracks including “I Am the Walrus,” “The Fool on the Hill,” and “Your Mother Should Know.”

It was never theatrically released or nationally broadcast on U.S. television, receiving only sporadic television syndication in the 1980s.

Now fully restored and presented properly

for the first time, the film emerges from the shadows and onto the screen courtesy of Great Performances on Friday, December 14, at 9:00 p.m.

But tune in at 8:00 p.m. (CT), because Great Performances has also stepped up to chronicle the behind-the-scenes story of the making of the film and to provide context for “the summer of love” era that set the scene for its production.

It’s the greatest Beatles story never told, and it’s packed with unseen footage and features contributions from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Martin Scorsese, Peter Fonda, and Terry Gilliam.

While not intended as legal advice, here are some ideas worth discussing with your attorney or financial advisor: Gift of Cash: The easiest way to increase your charitable deduction is through a gift of cash. Make sure your envelope is postmarked

by December 31. Keep in mind, too, that some employers will match charitable gifts.

Gift of Stock or Real Estate: A gift of stock or property is sometimes more tax-wise than one of cash, depending on how long you’ve owned it and the tax laws where you live.

Gift of Retirement Funds or Life Insurance: There can be special tax and other benefits when you donate retirement account assets and life insurance policies.

Life Income Gift: Giving a life income gift to Prairie Public helps you to meet three goals:

maintain a continuing source of income, receive tax benefits, and further the mission of Prairie Public.

North Dakota Tax Credits: The state of North Dakota allows a 40% state income tax credit for individual contributions of $5,000 or more to the endowments of nonprofits like Prairie Public. The maximum credit is $10,000 per year per taxpayer, or $20,000 per year per couple filing jointly. Businesses, too, receive a 40% state income tax credit with a maximum credit of $10,000.

Bequest: While you’re considering your 2012 income tax savings, we hope you will consider including Prairie Pubic Broadcasting in your will or other estate plans. You will leave a legacy that will ensure the continued success of Prairie Public’s programs, allowing future generations to continue to be enriched and educated by public broadcasting.
