Jane Austen was chronically ill when she started work on a witty novel set in a seaside town. Now, Masterpiece picks up Austen’s plot with Sanditon, set to air in eight parts beginning January 12, 2020.

Learn how your students can create and publish audio or video commentaries for a national audience. It’s a free, standards-aligned program co-hosted by the National Writing Project and PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs. Learn more at prairiepublic.org.

NPR’s Education Team is bringing back the NPR Student Podcast Challenge—an opportunity for students, grades 5-12, to create their own podcasts for a chance to appear on NPR in the spring. NPR Ed will provide helpful resources at npr.org beginning January 1, 2020, and the deadline for entries is March 31.

Prairie Public’s Teacher Community Program is rewarding teachers with SPARK GRANTS

Helping teachers turn their “spark” ideas into fires Congratulations to these teachers!

• Julia Berge, from Central Valley School in Buxton, ND, wants to encourage her students to be lifelong readers, learners, and changemakers, so she used her SPARK GRANT to purchase books and book shelves.

• Kari Hall, from Williston High School, wants her students to step up when they see someone in need, so she will use her SPARK GRANT to bring Irving Roth to her school—Roth is the director of the Holocaust Resource Center-Temple Judea of Manhasset New York.

• Katie Babcock, from Sunrise Elementary in Bismarck, ND, wants to give her students an opportunity to create and code, so she’ll use her SPARK GRANT to purchase LEGO Mindstorm EV3 kits for her classroom.

• Beatrice Hill, from West Fargo High School, wants to incorporate young adult literature into her school’s curriculum—to provide reading that reflects the experiences of her students. She’ll use her SPARK GRANT to purchase books.

As the end of 2019 approaches, you might be considering what and how to give before December 31.

Give a gift of cash The easiest way to increase your charitable deduction is through a gift of cash. Make sure your envelope is postmarked by December 31 or donate online at prairiepublic.org.

Give a gift of stock A gift of stock is sometimes more tax-wise than one of cash, depending on how long you’ve owned it and the tax laws where you live.

Give a gift of a charitable IRA If you are age 70½ or older, you may contribute directly from your IRA to Prairie Public by using your mandatory IRA withdrawal (up to $100,000 per year), completely free of federal income tax. To qualify, your contribution must be transferred directly from your IRA administrator to Prairie Public.

Give a gift of an endowment The state of North Dakota allows a 40% state income tax credit for individual contributions of $5,000 or more to the endowments of nonprofits like Prairie Public. The maximum credit is $10,000 per year per taxpayer, or $20,000 per year per couple filing jointly. Businesses, too, receive a 40% state income tax credit with a maximum credit of $10,000.

Give a legacy gift While you’re considering your income tax savings, we hope you will consider including Prairie Public Broadcasting in your will or other estate plans. You will leave a legacy that will ensure the continuation of Prairie Public’s programs, allowing future generations to have access to a world of ideas, enrichment, and education.
