Lord Selkirk’s compassion for the Scottish crofters helped seed the Canadian prairies.

BUILT ON AGRICULTURE pays tribute to Selkirk and the settlers of those early decades, investigates the grain exchanges and pools that contributed to the growth of agriculture in Manitoba and western Canada, interviews farmers who carry on the traditions, and considers the trends and technology that are building the future of agriculture.

Register now for the 2015 Teacher Training Institute PreK-12 teachers may receive graduate credit for attending a two-day teacher training institute being offered in June by Prairie Public Broadcasting. The Prairie Region Teacher Training Institute will focus on strengthening the preK-12 arts, history, and culture curriculum through the innovative use of strong video and other technologies, placing emphasis on crosscurricular applications.

Teachers may also receive a $100 stipend for attending the Institute, then writing and submitting an approved, media-rich lesson plan integrating regional arts, history and/or culture into a cross-curricular lesson.

The Institute is scheduled for June 23 and 24, 2015, at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Prairie Public is hosting the Institute in partnership with The Energy and Environmental Research Center’s The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership project, the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and the North Central Council for School Television.

Reporting on the Energy Boom Television doc explores tribal concerns Tune in Monday, May 18, at 9:30 pm CT With vast deposits of oil underneath tribal lands, all eyes are on the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara.

The new television documentary Black Gold Boom explores how Three Affiliated Tribes in western North Dakota is grappling with what many see as an opportunity and others view as a threat. Rancher Marty Young Bear worries about the environmental effects of oil drilling. Meanwhile, local leaders rush to form a tribal-owned oil company with the motto, “Sovereignty by the Barrel.”

This new television documentary from awardwinning reporter and director Todd Melby is the latest installment in his multi-year public media project on North Dakota’s oil boom.
