Collaboration will expand energy coverage As the newsrooms at local newspapers continue to be downsized, public media organizations are looking at innovative ways to expand local news coverage.

Station collaborations are a promising opportunity. Stations can pool resources, share broadcast spectrum, and reconfigure management and programming responsibilities.

The Stand Up ND: How to Stop Bullying multimedia anti-bullying project has been awarded a Bush Foundation Community Innovation Grant— part of the Bush Foundation’s effort to enable, inspire, and reward community innovation.

NPR is sending a trio of reporters to North Dakota for special coverage of the energy boom. Stay tuned for the reports, scheduled to air in January.

Public Television, and KUNC FM in Colorado.

The stations will share three reporters, an editorial leader, a curation and conversations editor, and a data journalist to create content for Inside Energy, a radio project that will explore the points of tension, the tradeoffs and opportunities, and the very human consequences of energy policy, production, use, and innovation.

While originating with a focus on the energy boom states of Colorado, North Dakota, and Wyoming, the reporting will explore issues of national interest and importance.

The project is launching with a $1.4 million startup grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Based on the short stories by G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown follows the kindly cleric as he solves crimes in his community. It is a quintessentially English world: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Chasing Shackleton, a new three-part series, follows a modern expedition that re-creates Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which launched in 1914. The series joins a crew of five intrepid explorers, led by renowned adventurer, scientist and author Tim Jarvis, as they duplicate Shackleton’s epic sea-and-land voyage in a replica of the original explorers’ lifeboat, James Caird, using only the tools and supplies his team used. Wednesday, January 8, 15, and 22, 9:00 p.m. (CT) Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are back as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in three new episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic.

Masterpiece Mystery! will thrill us with The Empty Hearse on January 19, The Sign of Three on January 26, and His Last Vow on February 2.

The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club chronicles the thrilling life and extraordinary times of aviation pioneer Florence Lowe “Pancho” Barnes, one of the most colorful and accomplished female pilots of the early 20th century. The program is narrated

January Television Highlights Downton Abbey returns for season four “We’d follow the Crawleys off a cliff,” said The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Please have Carson pack us a lunch.”

The mostwatched drama in PBS history enters its fourth gripping season with the whole world waiting to learn how the beloved characters deal with last season’s shocking tragedy.

The acclaimed ensemble is back and the legend continues as Downton Abbey returns—on eight Sundays beginning with a two-hour premiere on January 5 at 8:00 p.m. (CT).

Replete with weddings, births, abandonment, financial reversal, sudden riches, and equally sudden deaths, Season 3 left critics spellbound. “USA Today” ranked it as a perfect four stars, and “The New York Times” praised it as “delightful escapism.” Ahead of the celebrated final episode—the #1 show of the night, beating all broadcast and cable competition in prime time—“Newsday” had this summation: “The finale of a superb season does not disappoint.

Grade A(+).”

All who tuned in last season know that Matthew Crawley—heir to Downton Abbey,

husband to Lady Mary, and new father to a baby boy and successor—lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. The family is also still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind.

Season 4 opens six months later, and the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Lord Grantham must manage the estate without his canny son-inlaw; Cora suddenly faces a staffing crisis; Violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Matthew’s mother may never recover; Edith, who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and Mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire.

The servants also pick up, buck up, and get on with it—with new arrivals, departures, rivalries, and betrayals among the downstairs staff. Life goes on, to our great delight, at Downton Abbey.

50 Years A Million Thanks It was the ’50s, and the percentage of homes with a television set had skyrocketed in 12 years from 9 to 90 percent. Educational television’s time had come. Schools were racing to get televisions into classrooms, not unlike the push to get computers into classrooms in recent years.

In 1959, Dr. Ted Donat and a group of like-minded partners formed the North Central Educational Television Association—the organization that would work over the next few years to bring educational television to our region.

Their vision became a reality on Sunday, January 19, 1964,

In 1965, Prairie Public began production of its first instructional programs–a 60-hour English literature course for Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota; Teachers Orientation, which introduced teachers to the uses of public television programs in the classroom; and Art About Us, an instructional series hosted by Fargo art teacher Bruce McGhie. The series was carried by public television stations across the country.

at 2:00 p.m. (CT), when KFME Channel 13 sent the first public television signal across these prairies. It was an abbreviated threehour schedule that day that included previews of programs the station would offer and a drama dealing with mental illness titled “The 91st Day.” KFME received calls from as far away as Wahpeton, Valley City, and Hillsboro in North Dakota; Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes in Minnesota; and Sisseton, South Dakota, saying “a good picture is being received.”
