The decision to disperse did not come easy for us. We love our cows and we have worked hard to get here. But with our jobs taking up much of our time and with being blessed to have professions that we love, the time required to manage a purebred herd was lacking. There were discussions of just turning the herd commercial to ease the workload that comes with purebred cattle. Then, when we thought more on it, we decided that our cows still had lots to offer the breed and it would be a shame to have them just drop out of the herd book. There has been stress, a few tears and now that it is all laid out in front of us, there is a great sense of pride. We feel we have a group of females that will go out and do significant things for their new owners. Our program has always focused on creating easy keeping, long lasting cows. Udder, feet, structural soundness and temperament were paramount in everything we did. We always felt if you focused on the cow the rest will come.

It all started with a visit to Agribition in the fall of 2006. Both of us being from commercial cattle backgrounds the purebred business and showing cattle was a completely new idea for us. We headed to Regina with a few breeds in mind, eager to learn as much as we could. I think the Gelbvieh barn was one of our first stops and I guess you could say we never left.

This breed has been everything we hoped for when we chose it 16 years ago. James was working fulltime shift work at the firehall in Brandon and Shayla was home with two very young boys. We needed cattle that were going to do the work for us. We needed cows with a temperament to not have to worry about Shayla doing night checks by herself. Hard working moms that would have those babies almost completely on their own, but not mind a little help when needed. They are such lovely and attentive mothers.

Calves needed to come easy and grow. The cows won us over, but the people were a wonderful addition and crucial to our success.

We started our herd from two key dispersals, DTJ/SBR & Bergen Gelbvieh. We hope there are some of you reading this in a similar situation, thinking about getting into the business and considering Gelbvieh. Do it, call us and let us help.

Most of the cows will sell with a fall born calf at side. Look to our website for the information on these 2023 fall calves. The fall program was a great move to reduce the burden of round the clock checks. For three years now these cows have calved almost entirely trouble free on their own. These cows will fit into your operation without having to calve outside your calving season.

All cattle have been sired verified and whenever possible dam verified. All lots, including the fall born calves, have 100K DNA panel on file with the CGA. We have taken the guesswork out. Buy with confidence in every lot. Thank you for your interest and we hope that you will enjoy flipping through our catalog.

In closing, we could not have gotten to this point without the help of numerous people. We won’t start naming for fear of missing someone. Those that helped us get our start, those that gave us advice and mentorship along the way. Thank you to those who supported our program, whether it was buying bulls or females. We have developed many close friendships over the years and even after the cows are gone, we are so thankful that we will still have those friendships. For that we are truly grateful!

We were incredibly honoured when James and Shayla asked us to help them with the sale This event creates an incredible opportunity for new and seasoned Gelbvieh producers alike.

The Jaspers have built a foundation within their cowherd based on functional, easy doing mother cows. We have enjoyed the privilege of touring their pastures annually for seven years now.

One of the most important traits we have made note of is the consistent improvement. What exists today is an outstanding group of females who will be great assets to their new owners.

We have personally experienced the opportunity JSJ cattle can bring your program. The first for us was a cow named JSJ Catchy 2C who has become a 5 time Dam of Merit for us. Of course there was also the great JSJ Baha 35B who created a new path in our work and whose influence you’ll find in these pages.

When we started into the purebred business, we were quick to take note of cow families and foundation females. These females have a huge impact on programs and the breed as a whole.

Baha was a standout from day one. We showed Baha and her first calf, JSJ Dillinger 39D. They won Reserve Champion Gelbvieh Female at Ag Ex in Brandon in 2016. Her first calf not only made the bull pen but was the high selling bull in our sale that year. The following summer Joe and Aaron came for a pasture tour and fell in love with Baha. We weren’t willing to sell her and after some negotiating we agreed to sell ½ interest to Twin View. Joe and Aaron worked their magic in getting her ready for show.

She won Grand Champion at Brandon’s Ag Ex and Reserve Grand Champion at Agribition that fall. Baha was a beautiful cow, but the true level of her greatness is seen in her progeny. She produced 80 #1 eggs in four flushes. These ET calves continue to top the show and sales ring.

Baha has 3 sons in our bull pen this year. A black Baha son is one of our entries into the 2023 Canadian Gelbvieh Bull Futurity in Stettler, AB. After the successful 4 flushes it was decided, with that many potential offspring, it was time to let someone else have an opportunity to own this great female. She sold to Smithers Land Cattle through the Function & Finesse Sale.

Of course we did keep some of the good ones for ourselves, 3 daughters, 2 granddaughters and 2 paternal sisters are on offer. We look forward to following this cow family for a long time.

Unique

JSJ Unique Lady 27U was our first truly prolific cow. Every calf she ever raised from 2012 to 2021 has either been retained or sold as breeding stock. Her son, JSJ Edge 12E and grandson, JSJ Elite 22E, were our highest and second highest selling bulls in our 2018 Sale.

Many of her daughters have similar track records. Unique’s daughters and granddaughter (JSJ 104F, JSJ 89H & JSJ 80J) have picture perfect udders that will stay that way throughout their productive lives. Unique Lady was here until the age of 14 and was picked out for her impeccable udder and youthful appearance right until the end. This picture of her was taken when she was 12 years of age. We flushed her to The Boxer and the results of that flush put two in the bullpen for our 2024 bull sale and a daughter who sells as lot 13.

Her name says it all, JSJ Beauty 6B. An absolute model cow when it comes She is a Birch’s Big Time daughter. Big Time himself was the great AWB to overall structure and performance. She only has one daughter in this Birch’s Natalie 22Z’s first calf. Talk about getting in on the ground floor of a sale but progeny have sold to Fladeland Livestock, Maple Grove Gelbvieh, pedigree that has truly been prolific. Daphne has already made a name for Diamond Acre Farms and Biggelar Farms. Her ability to raise both gorgeous herself with a bull selling to Wayne Buydens and her daughter, JSJ 80J, that daughters and top end bulls makes this cow rare. The most notable of these sold the Keriness Cattle Company in the 2022 Function and Finesse sale is JSJ Elite 22E, Fladeland Livestock purchased ½ interest in Elite and he for $8000. has gone on to produce top end females and bulls for both programs. This cow still has an amazing story to write. She should be going straight into a donor program. Son sells in our 2024 Bull Sale.

Unique Cow Family 62D is yet another tidy uddered cow that milks. She always weans a good one with her highlights being JSJ Hallie 9H who sold to MC Enterprise and JSJ Josie 6J is working at Twin View Livestock. She had her first bull calf last year and he is in the bull pen for our last bull sale next spring. Son sells in our 2024 Bull Sale.

So much to say about DSL Deep Sands Zap 15Z. Let’s start with her track record. Her second calf was JSJ Crush 8C. Crush saw herd sire duties here and at Overby Stock Farms. He gave us our first grand champion banner and birth into the Beef Supreme at the Canadian Western Agribition. He continued to cover cows until July of this year. He was an absolute puppy dog to work with and was still very sound when he went to town. She gave us JSJ 70E who sells as Lot 18.

Daughter JSJ Gabby 32G went to Jace Cattle Company. A son, JSJ Huston 88H, went to Thackeray Land and Cattle and JSJ Jamieson 19J sold to Roger Polvi of Rocanville. Then she flushed 18 number one eggs. Our first ET calves came in the fall of 2022.

JSJ Kong 77K ET is one of our entries into the 2023 Canadian Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. JSJ Katrina 106K ET was Joe and Aaron’s pick for Function & Finesse this year. After we flushed her, we ended up breeding her for February to see if we could get a show heifer. She did not disappoint. JSJ 1L is a powerhouse female that is going to do great things.

We purchased Addison through Function & Finesse 3.0 from Ledgerwood Gelbvieh in Washington. She had an absolute stunning heifer calf at side. We picked the cow and moved her into our flush program. 51 Gigi is maybe one of the most unique lots in the sale. Gigi is a fullblood cow who’s granddam is none other than the great Birch’s Gayle 32N. These fullblood genetics are getting extremely rare in our herdbook. Gayle females have been National Champions 3 times in the past 8 years. A choice lot of 3 Gayle granddaughters sold for $18,000 this fall. Throw in Holman and 5D and this, like I said, is a unique pedigree in a modern looking cow.

Chad and Carrie Nicholas of McCoy Cattle Company were a great help to us when we were first starting out. Chad even gave James his first sales job, selling SmartLic mineral. McCoy females are known to be some of the best in the breed, beautiful yet functional females. When they decided to reduce their Gelbvieh herd they gave us the opportunity pick 6 cows from there herd. Those 6 females had a big impact on our program. We had the opportunity to purchase the right to flush any cow in the Overby Stock Farm program. We selected OSF Smoke 25C for both her performance record and because she checked all the boxes. Good udder, extremely sound, big volume in a dark red package. We flushed her to the national champion Boxer bull and got this sweet heifer. Feminine and hairy, we’re sure she is going to raise some good ones for her new owner.
